    Sony Vegas Pro 9 Review

  • Sep 05, 2009 from maanjones
maanjones Sony Vegas Pro is editing software for Windows and although it can perform both, audio and video editing, audio editing is certainly its strength. It has quite a few new features, but at the same time, it also shares the same problems like the earlier version 8.1. It fails to offer many new features when you compare it with Vegas Pro 8.

    Beginner Likes It

This review is for brand new beginners like me. I've never used any of the many software programs for video capture or editing. A friend told me that Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum was the easiest and least buggy. BTW, I don't know what the word Platinum refers to or, for that matter, if there is a silver or gold version. Everyone but this one friend told me to shut up and buy a mac in order to use Imovie. I ended up going with Vegas rather than buying a new computer just to edit video. Here's what I've noticed in the first week of use: I was overwhelmed reading the instruction manual but then I stumbled onto the incredible sony training website. Sony provides a website dedicated to training for an earlier version of this program-- [...]This training website had a minor problem: I couldn't figure out the "plug in" update stuff, which I think does something to your browser to enable you to watch these training videos. However, it is easy to download each... 5/5 A. Rosenbach "A. Rosenbach" (California) - See all my reviews, November 14, 2011

I have nothing to do with Sony, but I do read all the post to see what people say and that adds to my buying decision. Given the choices and support, I take Sony. Vegas Pro 9 Continues To Excel In Video Editing

The product description above goes a LONG way into describing Vegas Pro 9's capabilities here, so I won't reiterate these ad nauseum. However, if you're new to the field, is Vegas Pro 9 for you? If you're looking for the perfect, non-linear editor, and are seriously considering producing multiple DVD's as a business line (say you're a wedding videographer, etc.), then I'd respond with a resounding YES. If you're tired of being faced with restrictions of cheaper offerings (i.e. limited menu lengths, constrained templates, etc.) or if you're frustrated with compatibility limitations (only certain video files are supported, you need something that will read AVCHD video files), then here's another resounding YES. If you're looking into software that gives you full range in creativity, then another resounding YES.If you're looking for software that simply takes your home movie and plops it onto a DVD with minimal rework, look elsewhere. I, however, use it almost... 5/5 Maek (Phoenix, AZ United States) - See all my reviews, June 1, 2009

    Still the best

Even though I sometimes use two other video editors, Vegas remains the master of the space. Don't let the notion that the editing workflow is intended more for professionals than consumers fool you -- ignoring most of the bells and whistles, you still have a product that is worth the extra money if for no other reason its stability. I definitely fall in the consumer category, but Vegas is worth every penny to me.Vegas takes good advantage of modern multi-core in rendering. When I recently upgraded from a dual-core to a new Intel 8-way chip, I saw a near-linear (3.75x) speedup during rendering, which was quite impressive. Since I haven't used Vegas in ways that stress the system outside of rendering, I don't know whether it is as efficient in its use of system resources for other activities. While Vegas has great format support and degrees of control over output unrivaled by editors in the consumer-audience market, I whish it would include (input) support for... 4/5 N. Patches Have Resolved Most Earlier Issues

Since Sony has patched Vegas a few times, the AVCHD issues I was experiencing have been resolved. I think there are still some cineform issues the need to work out for the pros, but apparently some other daunting bugs have been worked out as well. Vegas Movie Studio is simply a stripped down version of Vegas--and there is certainly a market for the prosumer market. Vegas now deals with the files from all the cameras I deal with except for the Flip Mino HD--which I use Pinnacle Studio 12 Collection to edit. I wanted to be able to grow with my video editing and wanted more than the 2 video tracks Pinnacle Studio provides, but also more than that, with Vegas Pro I have the ability to use unlimited audio and video tracks. Compared to Adobe Premiere, Vegas is a steal--I no longer regret having purchased it. Adobe Premiere Elements 8 has unlimited video tracks as well, but it bogged down my computer so much I immediately uninstalled the trial version. Consequently I conclude this... 5/5 Thomas "tomsde" (Newark, DE, United States) - See all my reviews, August 10, 2009

O.K.So I wrote a review for the last incarnation of this software package (version 9) and a lot of people found it very helpful. There was one BIG problem with Version 9 - it had bugs in the video rendering section, which were never fixed with the software updates. The best of the pack so far!

I have tried out Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 Production Suite and decided to purchase it. I compared it to Magix Movie Edit Pro Plus 16, Pinnacle 14, Corel Videostudio Pro X2/X3, and Cyberlink Power Director 8 and it comes down to one major factor. Vegas actually runs without crashing. I own Videostudio Pro X2, reformatted my PC to start fresh and tried to reinstall VS Pro X2, as I had done a couple times previously, and this time it would not install. I called tech support, which graciously tried to help without charging me - they even called me back to see if the their idea worked - which, unfortunately, it had not. I downloaded VS Pro X3 as I could upgrade for a lower price than buying new. It worked fine a for a day but then started crashing non-stop to the point where I couldn't use it without crashing.I tried Power Director 8 which in some respects has a really good interface (not in all respects though - there are too many tabbed options and the... 5/5 Ansel 4 - See all my reviews This review is from: Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 Suite [OLD VERSION] (Software) I have tried out Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 Production Suite and decided to purchase it. Software has a small learning curve but it's simpler to learn than Final Cut Express. I have used Acid 3.0 for years and some of the interface/tools & commands are pretty similar. Comes with DVD Architect & Sound Forge 10. Haven't fully dived into but so far I created a 2 minute video that looks pretty good. The best thing is so far it reads multiple files. A producer gave me files he transferred from his Sony HD Cam to my hard drive using Final Cut Pro. No other software would open these files; not even AVS4YOU. Kept saying I needed a APCN Codec, well SVP 10 must have it because it worked and audio/video is great. Definitely worth the $94!Kg 5/5 K. Garner (Nashville, TN) - See all my reviews, June 12, 2010

    Good book on Vegas

I bought Vegas 9 from Videoguys in November and it came with zip documentation except the cryptic CD manual that Sony ought not include. I did get a Douglas Spotted Eagle training DVD with the DVD and liked his style and found the information he provided to be of much help, but it didn't go far enough. So I was happy to see this book available.I am new to video although I've worked with digital audio for years and stills in Producer. Every page of this book has useful information that has brought me up to speed on Vegas. I pretty much know what I want to do with the software, but finding it in the manual is impossible -- such as how do you separate a video and audio track? I spent hours looking for the answer in the documentation; I had it in minutes with the Vegad Pro 9 Workshop. The only negative is the book does not cover DVD Architect. So I had to spend another $28 here to get that book. I thought the chapters on the DVD included with the book would cover... 5/5 Carl E. Fantastic Resource For Vegas Pro 9

I've been using Sony Vegas 7.0 for a while now and just upgraded to Vegas Pro 9 a few days ago. I ordered this book because although I feel that I know the program well, I always felt that I could improve my knowledge and workflow so I decided to make the investment.Already I feel as if I've gotten my money's worth. Vegas is packed full of tools that I never had time to learn about let alone actually use. Flipping through the book I've already found clear explanations for tools and functions that I hadn't really used. This is like attending a course. I'm going to through from start to finish although I've already installed the software--I'm breezing through the things that I already know but I'm still picking up some good tips and pointers. So far I'd recommend this book to novices and experienced users alike. 5/5 Richard Gandon (New York) - See all my reviews, December 29, 2009

There is a lot of information in this book. But...the index is useless. I've yet to find anything I was looking for in the index. To find things I have to browse the book. Beats Windows Movie Maker Live! More like WMM 2.6

I have a windows 7 machine with 10gb ddr3,120gb SSD, i7 processor and Nvidia gtx550ti gpu. Pretty much top of the line. This software would be expected to run well and it does. Uploading from a video device is easy. It detected my Canon HD camcorder first crack. It allows you to upload the entire video in whatever format you want and as much of it as you want. Features abound and it will take you some time to get used to using all of them. If your'e coming over from the latest Windows Movie Maker re-introduced on Windows 7 which is terrible and too simplified, It uses a timeline like WMM 2.6 on Vista and basic effects like crossfades are easily rendered. Some of the other improvements over WMM are the ability to crop, pan and zoom within the clip. Easily add video from other sources and create as many audio and video, still layers you desire. Inexpensive alternative that still gets the job done.

I use an HD PVR to record gaming footage, and since I spent so much money on that, I didn't want to spend another $100 on editing software. This has been absolutely perfect. It doesn't come with all of the bells and whistles, but for what I want to do, it works amazingly. I know for a fact I'll get my money's worth out of this. The tutorials are easy to follow, so this product is very user friendly. If you don't need all of the fancy stuff, this should be just fine for you. 5/5 James - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Solving Registration Problems

Sometimes you can't register this product on an XP machine because the correct permissions are not written to the registry. I had this problem and it made me crazy until I called their support line. This whole thing started when I decided it was time to upgrade from Version 3 of Adobe Premiere Elements. I purchased Version 8 but it crashed so much I sent it back to the Chairman of the Board asking for a refund. I have now received the paperwork for this.I also tried the Corel product but it does not seem to have a sharpen filter, which is a fatal flaw for me.From what I have seen so far Movie Studio has very nicely implemented filters. When you drag one to the timeline a screen usually opens up that gives you precise control over the filter and also shows you a list of the filters that have already been applied. Here is their solution to the registration problem, which worked for me: (1-800-577-6642 is their support line) We found my... 5/5 Steven K. My title says it all.... Particularly when you get towards the end of project that you have invested a significant amount of time into, for it to crash constantly is extremely annoying. I have heard that this is not all that uncommon a problem. 2/5 Mike P - See all my reviews This review is from: Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack (Personal Computers) My title says it all.... ACID PRO IS THE BEST

I love making music. Acid pro is one [actually, my favorite] music making software. It's easy to use, and there's nothing wrong with it.You just drag and drop loops from the program and then eventually - BAM! - you've got a song!Another good thing is that you can make songs as long as you want and you can save them into Mp3.I highly recommend this if anyone is interested about making music! 5/5 K. I'm a beginner with this...

Are you a creative musician, who also is a Home recordist? (is there such a word?)Acid Pro is all you need in my book.It records audio like an old school multitrack tape recorder. It inputs midi-files. Wave files, mp3 files, and much more. You can mix them all together! And it comes with a huge library of Drum, bass, ambient, sound effects, voices, ethnic instruments, loops! These are in many musical genres. So you can make a backup band, with real recorded instruments, or any wierd combination you like.I bought Acid 6 awhile ago, and upgraded to 7.My experience is from the fostex 4 track days of the 80's.Those days everything was pretty intuitive.I then "graduated" to a Roland digi 8track recorder. Brain freeze!Drum machine, roland keyboard. I had to learn how to play basic chords on the keys, or bass lines etc.Too much to figure out for my brain. More time figuring out instead of creative juices... 5/5 Hawaiian Eye (Maui) - See all my reviews This review is from: ACID Pro 7 (DVD-ROM) Are you a creative musician, who also is a Home recordist?

    No Index

There is a lot of information in this book. But...the index is useless. I've yet to find anything I was looking for in the index. To find things I have to browse the book. In this day and age, not a good thing so I usually find what I want on the net. With that being the case, the book is of not much value. If you can find it used, I'd recommend it. New? Not. 2/5 Bob Maxland (SW Idaho) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Vegas Pro 9 Editing Workshop (Paperback) There is a lot of information in this book. Crash, crash, and Crash

I started with SV 9, then 10, and now 11. First, I am Sony's biggest fan. I own 3 sony video cameras, SV consumer and pro, and I promote Sony. But SVP 11 is the worst product I have ever used by sony. It is unstable, crashes whenever I use FXs and I can't even use the NEW Blue titler. If you don't save your work product every 3 seconds, you will lose your work. I am comitted to Sony, but I refuse to give them anymore money until they improve. I would not recommend this and I strongly encourage everyone to stay away from this. SVP 10 is Awesome! If you have it, stay with it! 1/5 Wado George "Peace and Harmony George" (Tennessee) - See all my reviews This review is from: Vegas Pro 11.0 (CD-ROM) I started with SV 9, then 10, and now 11. Save money, lost time

I own Sony Vegas Pro 9 - legal license! I love the features in Sony Vegas. Awesome product. Wide range of format support. Easy to edit. Powerful non-linear features, keying possibilities and more. EXCELLENT SUPPORT. I must give Sony support the credit for that. However, all the time saved by having these powerful features is CANCELLED by the number of times this software freezes, hangs or simply bombs. This might happen due to the use of images sequences, different video formats in one project, velocity curves and much more. This has reached the point where we are now moving to another editing package - simply to look for better stability.Suffice to say that with all the problems, I'm not keen to upgrade to newer versions of the software. 1/5 3D animator - See all my reviews This review is from: Vegas Pro 11.0 (CD-ROM) I own Sony Vegas Pro 9 - legal license! He's a Vegas Pro Fan

My husband has been using Vegas Pro for many many years. The 2006 computer he had it on finally went to Sony heaven and he needed a new program able to be used on Windows 7 OS so I bought the Vegas Pro 11.0. My husband writes a lot of music, plays all the instruments, and produces the finished product on CDs/DVDs. For him, this system is the bomb! He has not encountered any crash problems (knock on wood)as others have noted. But to be fair, he has not used all the features of this program yet. He looks forward to another six + years of using Vegas Pro 11.0. 4/5 Duchess - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
