Slow Motion

Creator: Dani Shapiro | Social Science - 1999-10-21

The only child of Orthodox Jews in an anti-Semitic suburb, the author tells how she was forced to confront her alcoholism, her destructive relationship with a married man, and her past when her parents were seriously injured.

Publisher: Mariner Books

About this book
Dani Shapiro, a young woman from a deeply religious home, became the girlfriend of a famous and flamboyant married attorney-her best friend's stepfather. The moment Lenny Klein entered her life, everything changed: she dropped out of college, began drinking, and neglected her friends and family. But then came a phone call-an accident on a snowy road had left her parents critically injured. Forced to reconsider her life, Shapiro learned to re-enter the world she had left. Telling of a life nearly ruined by the gift of beauty, and then saved through tragedy, Shapiro's memoir is a beautiful account of how a life gone terribly wrong can be rescued through tragedy.

Slow Motion, The Log of a Chesapeake Bay Skipjack

Creator: M. Kei | 2008-05-31

"Slow Motion: The Log of a Chesapeake Bay Skipjack" by M. Kei is a break-through collection of waterman poetry from the Chesapeake Bay by a poet who actually knows what he is talking about.

Publisher: Modern English Tanks Press

About this book
"Slow Motion: The Log of a Chesapeake Bay Skipjack" by M. Kei is a break-through collection of waterman poetry from the Chesapeake Bay by a poet who actually knows what he is talking about. M. Kei crews on the title boat, the Skipjack Martha Lewis. Kirsty Karkow, prize-winning poet and author of "water poems" and "shorelines," says: "A Skipjack is a historic vessel where form follows function with a rough beauty. These characteristics are apparent in the sensitive, poetic voyages of an aging boat and the men who work her sails. This history and trip log is sure to delight any sailor or lover of the Chesapeake Bay . . . and of poetry."

    poignant memoir

"Slow Motion: A Memoir of a Life Rescue by Tragedy" by Dani Shapiro is her bestselling memoir that was originally published more than a decade ago, and is currently being re-printed in a new edition. At the age of twenty-three, Dani is reluctantly pursuing a career as an actress and dating Lenny Klein, a rich, married lawyer who is twice her age and the step-father of her college friend Jess. Despite dropping out of college, Dani seems satisfied with being Lenny's mistress and living luxuriously--until a tragedy changes her life and makes her re-consider the choices she's made. Most of the book focuses on Dani's life following the highway accident that leaves both of her parents in the hospital fighting for their lives. The writing itself is very poignant and nostalgic. Shapiro's story takes place in the New York of the mid-1980s and can be construed not only as a coming-of-age memoir, but an account of self evolution. From Shapiro's writing, it is... 5/5 Alla S. - See all my reviews, January 26, 2010

a heartfelt memoir that left an impression

I was impressed with this autobiography on one hand and a little disappointed on the other. However, the disappointment was due to the writer's skill in vividly portraying a time in her life that left this reader wanting more. Although I agree with another reviewer who felt there were holes in the recounting of her life, who could reveal every little nook and cranny of their life? especially; when it concerns the subject matter at hand. I believe subsequent books by this author deal with her life in even more detail (Family History). This book tells the story of a young woman who lost her way early in life. Her whole self image is caught up in her looks (through no fault of her own) and since there seems to be no consequences to any of the bad choices made once she enters college, her life spirals downward fast. She ends up having an adulterous affair with the stepfather of her closest friend, drinks heavily, and has a mega cocaine habit. As she withdraws into the... 5/5 Margaux Paschke - See all my reviews, November 22, 2004

    A riveting, literary read

I finished Slow Motion last night after not putting it down for two days. What a gorgeous and courageous book! This is the story of how a family falls apart, and of how a young woman finds herself in the midst of great trauma--really, about how trauma can shape us. I think Shapiro is an amazing writer. The language is spare and beautiful, but yet somehow everything is here. I loved this book, and would recommend it to every woman I know who has ever come out the other side of anything difficult--a relationship, a family tragedy. This is a book that can help and inspire. 5/5 0, November 4, 1999

Slow Motion by Third Eye Blind

After the release of their self-titled album exploded, Stephan Jenkins wanted to focus on backing away from the more pop rock styles and into more experimental rock territory for their follow-up album Blue. This was mainly inspired by the catchy pop sensibilities of "Semi-Charmed Life" that were remembered more than the deep subject matter. As a result Blue turned out to be a much darker album and at times not nearly as accessible as their debut. As dark as the album got, though, there was one track that the record executives would not allow to be released in its full version."Slow Motion" was originally released in an almost all instrumental form with the refrain, "Slow motion see me let go" appearing as the only lyrics in the song in the original versions of the album and removed in later versions. (In the original demo this line was, "Slow motion in the ghetto.") The lyrics were deemed to be too violent for the album's release date in 1999, particularly in the wake of... 5/5 Jason C. Not for photography through a scope

This adapter adds fine motion control to your tripod for precise aiming of cameras, spotting scopes or binoculars. It mounts to any tripod with 1/4-20 threads.Unfortunately, it is a bit light weight and can greatly exaggerate vibrations making it difficult to focus at times and unsuitable for photography at high magnification even when mounted to a rock solid tripod. Also, while the unit allows for both gross or fine control of up-down altitude/tilt, it only allows fine control in East-West panning meaning you'll need to mount the adapter on a pan-tilt tripod head in order to aim it in the desired general compass direction. The Orion Precision Slow-Motion Adapter isn't bad, its just limited by its light-weight construction and lack of gross panning capability. 3/5 Technology Guy - See all my reviews This review is from: Orion Precision Slow-Motion Adapter (Electronics) This adapter adds fine motion control to your tripod for precise aiming of cameras, spotting scopes or binoculars. Wow!

I haven't written a review before, but this book brought me to it. I'm reading this out loud to my children (4th and 1st grade). The fourth grader doesn't want me to stop at one chapter a night. The first graders aren't as enthusiastic about it but are learning things in spite of themselves. My husband and I are bowled over by the insights. Knox writes so clearly and simply, with lots of humor. Very C.S. Lewis. I'm excited to find his Mass in Slow Motion someday. 5/5 J. Webb - See all my reviews, March 15, 2012

I wish I could send one to every person on earth

I who didn't believe in the claims of the catholic church set off to prove her wrong but in my study of both sides I found the evidence to prove otherwise. I hear my brothers and sisters ( protestant who do love the lord) make claim after claim that never hold up if they were to do serious research . Ronald Knox and frank shred and pretty much any catholic author but especially ex Protestants who become catholic have the best materials on all subjects. Ex protestant don't hate their past but fully embrace it in the catholic church and appreciate what they now have because when u find a treasure you cherish it. The only church that wasn't a heretical church in the first century was named catholic by St john the apostles deciple and that is the church Christ died to give us, made up of sinners and saints but the gift of god Robbia children where we on earth can meet the risen lord in the most intimate way by partaking the true manna from heaven (Jesus Christ body blood soul and... 5/5 John Prietto - See all my reviews, May 24, 2011

    Man, This Sucks.

I'm a fan of motion comic books, I think it is a great new way to experience comics. The artwork, animation and voice work on the Jonah Hex series is beyond terrible. If Amazon had a way to rate this at less than one I would be rating it a solid ZERO. Do not purchase this. Complete and total crap. 1/5 P. D. one of the best memoirs out there.

I have read literally dozens of memoirs the past few years and this book is as good as any of them. In addition to being so well written, its unflinching honesty and pain make it impossible to put out of your thoughts long after you've finished. The author doesn't try to excuse or exaggerate her own shortcomings and weakness and the picture she paints of her lawyer lover is so slimy and ugly the only question one asks is how possibly could she have fallen for him. of course, we know the answer: money, insecurity, fame, romance, etc. Growing up in a Jewish family with all the attendant confused feelings about God, observance and the family feuds that seem to accompany it all, I could easily relate to what Shapiro experienced with her family. This is not a prurient or self-pitying book and it's almost hard to pinpoint its attraction other than to settle on its honesty, integrity and the drama attached to a life when one finally matures and realizes there are more pre! ssing reasons... 5/5 Gary Delsohn (Corona del Mar CA) - See all my reviews, July 21, 1998

Don't trust the teller, trust the tale...but can we?

Competently written, but I am troubled by Slow Motion's disingenuousness. Dani Shapiro seems to be giving us what is usually called a "brutally frank" picture of an ugly chapter in her life, and she portrays herself as a woefully naive New Jersey girl--one of the world's leading innocents--who got mixed up with a beastly man (before she dated the beastly man, she dated "a [college] senior who...tried to feel me up"). In "Vogue," an admiring reviewer made reference to this man's having taken Shapiro's virginity as well as her innocence. Actually, when the 20-year-old Shapiro got involved with "Lenny Klein," she had already been married and divorced--she wrote openly of her marriages in a "New Yorker" essay. Being divorced is nothing to be ashamed of, so why didn't Shapiro, who supplies plenty of information on her bulimia, her drinking, and her drug use, give us an accurate picture of her romantic history? In this... 2/5 0, June 17, 1999

A compelling and brave memoir, but unanswered questions.

I tuned in to "This American Life" in the middle of Dani Shapiro reading from this book, without realizing the selection was her memoir! I was impressed enough to find and read the whole book. Ms. Shapiro is a gifted writer, and I look forward to reading her novels. I felt the strength of this book is her ability to describe the complexity of her feelings: guilt, anxiety, loss, and embarrassment, if not shame, at the life she leads as the "sugar baby" of a wealthy married man. It's emotionally candid without being self-indulgent. I do want to know a little more, though, about the present. This is someone who has dealt with some difficult problems in her life, and gone on to carve out real success for herself. She barely touches on how good it feels to finally be in control of her life, and it feels as if something is missing. Maybe there are things she felt best to leave out? Unresolved issues? A relapse of some kind? What was it that... 3/5 0, March 8, 1999
