Publisher: Adobe Press

About this book
This is the eBook version of the printed book. Watch out, Final Cut Pro. For the first time in five years, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe's flagship digital video editing application, is once again available for both Macintosh and Windows users. This project-based book covers not just the basics of working with audio, creating transitions, and producing titles, but also all that's new in Premiere Pro: the ability to build Blu-ray Disc, DVD, and Flash projects with Adobe Encore CS3 (now included with Premiere Pro CS3); Adobe OnLocation CS3, which lets on-the-road users record footage directly to their computer disk--removing the need to capture video to tape later. Readers will enjoy learning to create slow-motion effects with Time Remapping, and will get up to speed on Premiere's new editing tools. What's more, users can compress their finished video for delivery to the latest handheld devices, such as mobile phones, iPods, PSPs, smartphones, and more. Best of all, the book's accompanying DVD includes real footage that you can practice on.

    Finally! PE10 is a winner

Coming from Premier 9, I didn't notice a significant visual difference between 9 and 10. The biggest differences are under the hood, like 64-bit Win 7 support. The program moves smoother and more seamlessly than previous versions. One of my biggest gripes with the previous two versions of PE was horrible performance with Nvidia laptop graphics cards. Well, I'm now running a new laptop sporting a quad-core Sandy Bridge processor, 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium and a 1GB Nvidia GPU and so far, have experienced no problems. Knock on wood, all seems to have been resolved between the two.Installation is simple. There are five disks in the package. Disk one is for 32-bit Windows, disk two is for 64-bit Windows, disk 3 for Mac and the remaining The interface is pretty much the same although there are more options for improving color balance and exporting clips. Capturing also seems quicker and less problematic than previous versions. There are several options for capture... 5/5 J.H.S. (Pennsylvania United States) - See all my reviews, November 6, 2011

    *Maybe* not worth an upgrade

[review has been updated - more comments at bottom]I've been using Premier Elements 7 (PE7) for a couple of years, and it is reliable, predictable, and efficient. I mostly record things from my TV tuner card, from which I create DVD's without having to go through any additional hoops. I do not make many home videos or do outside production work.I've been playing with the evaluation copy of PE10 and there are some alarm bells going off. My complaints are:1. ANNOYING - Always starts up in full-screen, even with a project that was saved in non-full-screen mode. Granted, it's a few mouse clicks to shrink the window, but PE7 always opened existing projects in whatever state they were saved in.3. ANNOYING - an updater component running in the background. Functiionality is nice, but Adobe makes it annoying to upgrade

I use Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Photoshop, and Premiere/Photoshop Elements and have used them for many years. I upgrade every couple of releases depending upon feature enhancements and budget. It seems like every time I move to a new version, Adobe does it best to inhibit you from just using the product. Besides the migration of catalogs, projects, etc., you end up having to reconfigure the software to get it back to how you want it to work (facial recognition was off in version 8 and I want it off in version 10). And, you have to put up with numerous re-registrations, "would you like to participate in..." and sales pitches. Then, to make matters worse, you have these weird bugs that crop up in new versions...right now with APE 10, software is crashing for no reason, the quick selection tool is only allowing "negative selections"Oh, and did I mention the features they take away that they then try to resell to you in either a "premium" service or... 3/5 John P. Two Decent Types of Software for Under $100

First off, I'd like to remind people that they are buying the Elements version of Adobe software. These are not the Pro versions. There's a reason why those versions are much more expensive. They are going to have many more features. There's a reason this bundle is less than $100. These versions are made for people that don't want to, or need to, take the time to learn everything that the pro versions Photoshop and Premiere can do.Secondly, some people are complaining that they are difficult to use? These are some pretty cut and dry software applications. My 8 year old can use this software (and has). All software has a learning curve. The learning curve for this software is not very high. Yes, there are some things that take time to learn, but if you want to be able to do things that will really make your projects look good, you're going to have to take the time to learn how to properly use all, or at least most, of the features. Is Photoshop Elements... 4/5 Miguel Mas (Calexico, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements 10 (Software) First off, I'd like to remind people that they are buying the Elements version of Adobe software. Learning Curve an acceptable price to pay

I have long avoided moving up to Adobe's Photoshop because of a fear of the steep learning curve for mastering the software. I finally decided that Elements looked like it might be Photoshop with training wheels and I bit the bullet last month. No regrets here! Indeed, the program is so robust that it will undoubtedly take many more weeks and months before I master it all. Meanwhile I'm up and running and have been creating beautiful images from the day of installation. And even if I'm not using 90% of it yet, what the heck; I'm productive. (And I'm told we don't use about 90% of our brain either.)Online tutorials and tons of help buttons and tools are always available. In the end, learning Elements is nearly effortless and if you're into photography and editing images, mastering this program is fun.Happy camper here. An easy-to-follow hands-on guide to what's possible with Premiere Pro CS5

I've used Final Cut Pro and for several years now, and while I can't claim to be an expert I know them fairly well. I decided to learn Premiere Pro as an alternative - primarily because you can edit natively with several formats that Final Cut requires you to convert before editing. Since then, and after working through this book and getting to know how it works and what it can do, I've decided to stick with Premiere Pro for most of my editing projects because I find it much easier to work with for a number of advanced editing problems. This book (which is really the only book available that focuses on teaching how to use ) is very clear and... 4/5 Nathan Andersen "film lover, philosophy profe... Become a Video Editing Professional in 3 or 4 Days

We go back to Premier 1.0 as well as having had a traditional video editing suite, in the days of tape. Admittedly, I had not kept up with all the Premier revisions. We used to have both Macs and Windows, because there was a time when we would need to translate incompatible file formats. However, we have not had a Windows machine for nearly six years. The revision history of Premier is a little difficult to figure out. Through August 2002 there was Adobe Premier on Macs and Windows. Then, a year later Adobe introduced Premier Pro, which was a Windows-only app. By July 2007, following the Macromedia merger, Premier Pro re-emerged as a Mac app with the introduction of CS3 and the Production Premium Suite and Master Collection. We fully intend to master the entire set of key apps in the Master Collection. Since we're rusty on Premier Pro (Pr), we have chose three key solutions to improve our skills, dramatically. We, like many Adobe professionals, have been relying upon... 5/5 M. Media Studios Inc. Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 Classroom in a Book, like all the other books in the Classroom in a Book series, is a great tool for learning Adobe Premiere (and learning how to incorporate Premiere with other Adobe tools). The book is divided into 21 lessons that are designed to be worked through in a step-by-step method, where each lesson builds upon the last. A DVD is included that contains all the project files you'll need to work along, so everything you need is packaged together, and you can get started immediately. The DVD also includes partially completed files, so you can jump in at any lesson, even if you haven't completed the previous lessons. The lessons begin with an overview of the Adobe Premiere CS5 workspace and then move on to cover everything you need to know from importing files to exporting the final video (and everything in between). Experienced editor's take

I have worked with Final Cut, Avid, Sony Vegas, and if you want to get old school Media 100 in addition to cut and splice. I used to work with Premiere a while back and found the software too unstable. Having a PC I was unable to switch to Final Cut or the money to upgrade to Avid so I went with Vegas. Vegas is a much more stable program but has a bit of a different interface (the main editing arrangement between the other programs are very simular). I was happy with Vegas, and it companion DVD program is set up quite nicely (very user friendly while still allowing advance users the power to make animated menues). However I have gotten into DSLR HD recording and I did not like the process of rerendering the native files so they can be used in my editing programs, so when Premiere Pro was released it caught my eye. Having used it for a week heres my 1st impressions.Once you learn all the functions it will be a great tool but a lot of the advanced features are not... 4/5 J. Very Impressive

I've worked with other video editors, but this is by far the best. Just look above to see all that it can do. It also integrates seamlessly with all other Adobe products as well as with many non-Adobe products. After reading the Adobe forums, I would recommend that anyone purchasing this software run it with Windows 7 as Win7 brings out it's very best. Also, Win7 makes the best use of memory which is extremely important when editing video. If you are a beginner, this software isn't for you (Get Adobe Premiere Elements 8). But, if you are experienced and want the best, this software is definately a front runner. Last, but not least, no matter what video editing software you use, make sure that you have a very substantial and capable computer. A computer that meets the minimum requirements most likely will not be enough. Editing video (particularly HD video) requires a very serious computer. If you don't have a very good computer, the results will be frustrating, and the... 5/5 Kent Roorda (Denver, CO United States) - See all my reviews, June 5, 2010

I am new to using a professional NLE. I took the big step and got Adobe Premiere Pro CS5. I made sure that my computer system had more that the minimum system requirements (home built). I edit AVCHD, DV, HDV, etc., and have never had a crash or freeze up. I do have Premiere Elements 8 on two other PCs and they crash when I use Pre8 from time to time, but not with PrePro on my dedicated system. For questions I have for using PrePro CS5, I go to [...] help forums. There are some Adobe staff and many regular posters there who give great helpful answers and many tips. I hope that Abode can certify some more GPU cards (5 at this writing) because they are not cheap and I would love to be able to use the GPU-accelerated Mercury Playback Engine. 5/5 D. Highly recommended

I can't recommend this book highly enough for editors scrambling to re-train on Premiere Pro CS5/5.5. The depth of coverage on more advanced topics such as color grading, hardware optimization and media management will be particularly useful for professional editors. The up-to-date section on Adobe's Dynamic Link provides vital information to those wishing to integrate their Premiere workflow with After Effects, Audition, Media Encoder and Encore.Although this book is aimed at experienced editors, it is appropriate for many intermediate-level/student editors (especially those familiar other Adobe applications). Basic and advanced editing techniques are clearly outlined, but this is not a how-to-learn-to-edit book. The DVD features short exercises and excellent video tutorials (in both HD and mobile-friendly formats). Excellent guide for the video editor

We're making the switch to Adobe Premiere Pro after 10 years of running Final Cut Pro 7. This is the perfect book to get us going. What I love the most is there is no wasted time trying to give us an editing theory. But then you add in the DVD with additional videos (something like 50 of them) along with complete tutorial media and this book should have you up and running in Premiere Pro in about a week. The writing style and videos make you feel like you're just sitting there with Richard, Robbie and Jeff. Missing info... perhaps not good for Windows users

Based on the reviews, I was excited to get this book. However, I quickly found that the earliest examples on the DVD do not match the references in the book. For instance, in Chapter 4, on page 57, the authors refer to a video clip, MVI_0152.MOV. However, this file cannot be found anywhere in the Chapter 4 files on the DVD.Additionally, the authors provide a video tutorial that talks about the "Common Media Folder". The video even says that a copy of the Common Media Folder is included on the DVD. Sure enough, there's a zip file with that name, but attempts to open it in Windows 7 only create a file called DS_Store that I believe is an Apple-specific construct.I checked with the publisher's website, hoping to find some errata, or explanation, but couldn't locate anything. So at this point, I'd have to warn Windows users to be prepared to work through some errors.Overall, the book looks good, and I think it will... 3/5 Rick Gates (Eugene, OR) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Sure enough, there's a zip file with that name, but attempts to open it in Windows 7 only create a file called DS_Store that I believe is an Apple-specific construct.I checked with the publisher's website, hoping to find some errata, or explanation, but couldn't locate anything. So at this point, I'd have to warn Windows users to be prepared to work through some errors.Overall, the book looks good, and I think it will... Best Value Video Editing Suite on the Market 9/10

I have been a Vegas Movie Studio user for three versions now. Each one just gets better and better."Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 Production Suite" comes with three separate programs and some very cool extras thrown in.You get Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 to do all your editing and video making,DVD Architect Studio to make your DVD's and BluRay Discs, and Sound Forge Audio Studio which is a stand alone audio recording and editing studio - great for Podcasters and anyone making voice overs for talking books or tutorials. With this production suite version comes a new bonus 3D Text Generator and extra 3D Transitions and Effects from NewBlueFx. The biggest addition to Version 11 is a new "Title and Text" tool that gives you the ability to create animated text titles. Beginner Likes It

This review is for brand new beginners like me. I've never used any of the many software programs for video capture or editing. A friend told me that Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum was the easiest and least buggy. BTW, I don't know what the word Platinum refers to or, for that matter, if there is a silver or gold version. Everyone but this one friend told me to shut up and buy a mac in order to use Imovie. I ended up going with Vegas rather than buying a new computer just to edit video. Here's what I've noticed in the first week of use: I was overwhelmed reading the instruction manual but then I stumbled onto the incredible sony training website. Sony provides a website dedicated to training for an earlier version of this program-- [...]This training website had a minor problem: I couldn't figure out the "plug in" update stuff, which I think does something to your browser to enable you to watch these training videos. However, it is easy to download each... 5/5 A. Rosenbach "A. Rosenbach" (California) - See all my reviews, November 14, 2011

    Learing curve? Naw...

Brief and to the point: Reviewed Corel pro/Pinnacle, Adobe and Sony. I did the trials.Sony was the most easy to manipulate and had the most bells and whistles. It did not crash when I rendered to DVD or to Youtube or to IMDB (IMDB's got some upload rules).Yes, there's a lot of information, but I went to Sony and found "support" under there is "training" and under that was webinars. I watched three webinars and all the training videos.I am a novice and did have to figure out the windows. For the money: their features, their interface and they way things work ESPECIALLY: "SHOW ME HOW!" are brilliant.NO, I do not work for them. I have nothing to do with Sony, but I do read all the post to see what people say and that adds to my buying decision. Given the choices and support, I take Sony. I bought the suite and saved nearly $40 ($124.95 on Sony--why, no idea, because I printed both spec sheets and compared notes: they were the... 5/5 MSL "msl" (New York, NY) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This is the one folks...really the one!

I'll start off by stating that I am just an everyday dad who wants to take the HD videos he shoots of family vacations, kids' birthdays, fishing trips, etc and transfer them to DVD without any loss in quality. I am not out to produce the next "Citizen Kane" nor am I out to challenge Steven Spielberg to a directorial throwdown.I do not want to have to convert files, combine files, or compress files. I just want to transfer my family memories to disc for future viewing. If I can also chop out those moments when I forgot to turn the camcorder off and you get a good view of what footwear everyone was wearing that day, even better. If I can also include a title screen, with a neat little visual of what's on that disc, with an area where you click "play" to start the video, better still. This sounds like a fairly simple request, no? Nevertheless, I have had trouble finding video editing software that will do this in a straightforward and simple fashion. I have... 5/5 MW (Miramar, Florida United States) - See all my reviews, December 6, 2010

Being a novice, I like this editor

There seem to be multiple negative reviews for this version of Adobe Premiere Elements 9, but nearly all come from people who have much more experience than I do with previous versions of the software, or who have used competing software. I can't possibly disagree with these reviewers, because I lack their experience. However, from the perspective of a novice user who has accumulated a lot of videos and photos over the years, and having had a chance to experiment with Adobe Premiere Elements 9, I have to say that I'm quite happy with it. In short, here's what I liked:1) The organizer was good at helping me find all the videos and photos I have scattered on my hard drive, including videos imported from an old analog video camera, from a newer (but non-HD) digital video camera, and from an earlier (also non-HD) Flip camera. All of these are easy to "drag and drop" into a video project. I am an avid Picasa user, and I have mixed feelings about letting two pieces of... 4/5 N. Somewhere Between Flip and Apple Editors

I've used Adobe Photoshop (not Elements) for many years but use Final Cut Express for video editing. I downloaded Premiere Elements 9 for Mac to see if it would be a cheaper alternative to FCE with Adobe's quality. My first impression is that it's very much like the newer Microsoft products. When you open the program it has to "phone home" to Adobe. It wants you to log in to their video sharing site, etc. It (like Apple's cheaper software) wants to take over the management of every still and video on your machine. Don't software developers realize that some people have more than one program for the same purpose? As far as features, it seems ideal for capturing children's activities. It has lots of canned intros and styles that are children-based. It has a very few features that FCE probably doesn't have but it doesn't seem to support any after-market add ons. One is limited to what's in the box. If you're a busy mom who wants to easily make a cute (too-cute?) video of Charley's... 3/5 Kailua Steve (Kailua, HI USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Adobe Premiere Elements 9 [Old Version] (Software) I've used Adobe Photoshop (not Elements) for many years but use Final Cut Express for video editing.
