Beware- You can only use it for 1 year. Iolo has become very deceptive

I used to love this product and always recommended it to other. But Iolo has become a very deceptive company and product has seriously degraded. The most upsetting recent addition is Iolos silent change in product licensing. YOU CAN NO LONGER USE THE PRODUCT AFTER 1 YEAR. Really, once you buy the software, you'll notice a box in SM that tells you how many more days before you have to repurchase a license. Really Iolo, you're doing this to your customer. That's too bad.Now on to my experience (keep in mind, I'm and IT support guy):- I've spent over 8 hours trying to fix what SM did to my system. I'm not saying it caused serious damage, but it's definitely not very friendly to Windows 7.- I've spent a couple hours on the phone with Iolo's support and they have me editing my Registry and other really nasty stuff the average person should not be doing.- After all this, I've learned there is stuff that Iolo is doing in the background that is... 1/5 W. Quick, Easy, and Efficient

I don't write a lot of reviews either, by the way, I find comments like that irrelavant to consumers so forgive me for even posting it. I have operated Iolo's System Mechanic for just over a year now. I had no problems loading it. I have no problems using it. I have no problems with the way it updates. I know just enough about my computer to know that if I start tinkering with it, in an attempt to make it run faster, I can potentially do more harm than good. I can honestly say my computer runs better because I use it. I recently renewed my subscription for two more years and was pleased with the ease of my renewal process. During the renewal process Iolo provided me with pertinent information regarding my account, on the screen, before I had to perform a deep search for it. Oh, I can still operate my previously installed firewall and virus protection with System Mechanic. 5/5 R. Sams - See all my reviews, December 7, 2008

Not reliable enough and some "fixes" are dangerous

System Mechanic uses an unsigned disk access device driver (elrawdsk.sys) for its maintenance, and I wonder if that was one of the causes for a system breakdown that subsequently required a complete restore of my hard drive. The disk defragmentation is suspiciously fast, although my PC did seem faster. Internet Optimization appears to apply the same adjustments whether under XP or Vista, even though Vista has a completely rewritten TCP/IP stack. Spyware detection on my system led to a false positive. The Iolo website has no technical information about how it works nor an online support forum, which makes it difficult to know if it's actions are safe. ActiveCare will run only after 5 minutes of idle (minimum), where it would be better to run in the background at low priority (especially in Vista with its improved I/O prioritization), if automatic maintenance was the key. There are plenty of free alternatives which are safer: Wise Registry Cleaner, NTRegOpt, JkDefrag,... 2/5 Instant Runoff Voting (Columbus, OH) - See all my reviews This review is from: System Mechanic - Up to 3 PCs (CD-ROM) System Mechanic uses an unsigned disk access device driver (elrawdsk.sys) for its maintenance, and I wonder if that was one of the causes for a system breakdown that subsequently required a complete restore of my hard drive. Be Patient and Persistant

BE PATIENT AND PERSISTANTI recently purchased Systems Mechanic from IOLO Software Labs.I was, and still am, amazed at what it can do.The first time I ran it, it uncovered multiple problems, whichI quickly instructed it to fix. After that, I ran it everydayfor a week, and each time it would uncover more problems. My computer started to run better after the first time I ranit, and got better each time it was run. After about two weeks, things were really working great. This is NOT an upgrade. It is still version 7.5

Based on the title you might think this is an upgrade from version 7 - but that is not the case. When you install this from the dvd you will find that it is version 7.5.1. So, where does the "08" come from? Must be the year the packaging was changed. Perhaps it is a ploy by IOLO to get you to sign up for a subscription the renews annually. Fortunately you do not need to sign up to install the program. While the program is certainly capable, it is not a new release. If you already have version 7.5, don't bother. 3/5 Kantw8 "Kevin" (Michigan) - See all my reviews This review is from: IOLO Technologies System Mechanic (3-User) [Old Version] (CD-ROM) Based on the title you might think this is an upgrade from version 7 - but that is not the case. Excellent Utility Suite

I have run lots of utilities and utility suites, and this is the one that has managed to stay on my system. The main thing for me is that is has never once caused a crash or lock-up, much to my surprise, and I am downloading and installing their updates almost daily. That is what I don't like about other utility programs - they eventually mess up my computer, and then I have to do a re-install of one level or another. I think System Mechanic is keeping my computer healthy - it is running Windows XP for more than a year with no crashes, and I am downloading a lot from the Web, doing installs and un-installs and getting away with it - - must be System Mechanic. You can also drill down deep into your system, there a lot of utilities within the suite. 5/5 Phil Jones "Netjoy" (CA) - See all my reviews, February 4, 2010

    Does not work with Vista!

I purchased version 7 Pro in early May '08, because of the special pricing and because it had a three PC license. I installed it on my primary machine - a Dell desktop running Windows Vista. It installed fine but I noticed the virus database was marked as outdated. I tried to do an update, and went through the motions - the program indicating that it had updated, but afterward still indicated that the database was over 400 days old (how do you get that outdated on a fresh install)! I contacted Iolo and they told me to uninstall and re-install, which I attempted. This created another problem. I had a prior version of the included Search and Recover 4.0 already installed on my system, so I did not install this component. I was unable to re-install the SM Pro as long as this program was there. The problem was that I couldn't uninstall S&R using the uninstall on my machine. I have been in constant contact with tech support but they have only sent links to FAQ's that I have... 1/5 Ronald Gaillot "Geek" (Lower Burrell, PA USA) - See all my reviews, July 21, 2008

I do not recommend: serious issues

This product is not good for the "experts" as they can domost everything this product does manually, and perhaps theydo it using a safer approach. This product is absolutely inappropriate for the novices andbeginners: the installation process will install everything(e.g., main tools, firewall, etc), automates many of thetasks, and essentially will take over, regularlycarrying tasks that are unnecessary, CPU-demanding,and can cause many error prompts. Given the poor (andessentially non-existing) customer services, the beginner userwill be on his/her own to uninstall, disable, or to livewith the annoying, and sometimes scary responses (e.g.,indicators showing absolutely poor "health", "security"and "overall" status).Perhaps reasonably experienced users can selectivelyinstall and run certain tasks, and take appropriateprecautions (e.g., do a backup of registry before running... 1/5 A Teacher (Kansas) - See all my reviews This review is from: System Mechanic Professional - Up to 3 PCs (CD-ROM) This product is not good for the "experts" as they can domost everything this product does manually, and perhaps theydo it using a safer approach. System Mechanic 7 = Malware!

This product was purchased on Aug 31st, 2008 to be installed on a brand new HP Pavilion TX2510US notebook purchased on Aug 21st, 2008. Like a fool I bought this product again from iolo technologies on another laptop and it destroyed the Operating System. Thinking they would have fixed the bugs on System Mechanic Pro I figured I'd give this company another chance. Big Big mistake! Upon reboot after install the software corrupted my Windows Vista boot sector, so bad that I am now unable to even do an F11 System Restore. Spent over an hour with HP live support chat to get this fixed (no resolve). Iolo Technologies falsely advertises in the package they have 24 hour support (lies, lies, lies!) DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK!!!!!!!! IT WILL DESTROY YOUR COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!I first installed the "System Mechanic" portion of this feature on my system (Win XP Media Edition) and it seemed to get the basics done. However, even after 'repairing' almost 2000 registry errors and cleaning up some other things, my computer's performance did not improve at all. I have plenty of memory and plenty of harddrive and plenty of CPU, and yet my computer still ran clunky. The product also contains frivilous features that reproduce almost exactly what Windows already has and does for maintenance features. And when I tried to uninstall a program using System Mechanic's interface, upon reboot of my computer, the program just 'came back'. I had to uninstall it from Windows' Control Panel. And to get rid of some of the worst programs that wouldn't uninstall that were causing my computer to crash, I ultimately had to use Driver Sweeper. One day my wife's laptop crashed (System... 1/5 Etre Simyre (USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: System Mechanic Premium - Up to 3 PCs (DVD-ROM) DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK!!!!!!!! Total TRASH!!!

I turns off the USB buses in my XP and Vista machines, causing temporaty cyctem lockup for several miinutes. The first symptom is a frozen or non-refreshing screen. Next noticed is that the mouse and Trackball and Glidepads do not work. (They are all USB devices.) It also slows down bootup of my XP, my Vista and my Win7 machines. This program has cause me the loss of much data and time. It is going, going, gone from my 3 computers. I wish I had discovered this in the warranty period.Be advised that NONE of the so-called system cleaners, system performance enhancers, etc., perform as advertissed. This was the third I tried. Awful - one star only because I can't say zero

Based on a recommendation in the Dell support pages I bought this and loaded it up on an XP laptop and a Vista desktop. It was a HUGE mistake. I only THOUGHT that Vista was slow before I loaded it up. Since loading it up the machine has had to run "startup repair" three times. I get a fair amount of reading done waiting for windows to open. The laptop shows the same 'program not in registry' error six times on booting up...even though the program is there and runs just as it is supposed to. Things that used to work (like my scanner drivers, for example) had to be reloaded because System Mechanic apparently thought they were somehow nefarious. 1/5 Thomas H. TUU is very good at doing what it claims and isn't that hard to navigate. You'll hear that you can get freeware programs that do the same thing (like ccleaner) but it isn't true. I have ccleaner also and I do use it occasionally (it has a nice drive wipe, freespace or total) but it's nowhere near as effective as Tune Up Utilities. It's not as in depth nor does it do as thorough of a job. There's a reason the one is free and the other is not.To me, aside from keeping things nice and tidy, the best part about it is the program deactivator. First Impressions

Purchased this software based on the recommendation of a PC mag which I respect and the reasonable price here. The program is complex in its multiple functions and options but a patient reading of the manual (print out the full version in a PDF file in the CD) is very helpful. I worked through the sections one at a time both to get a grasp of the many sections/steps and, after a few brief sessions of read and apply, the whole thing was running easily. At this point, the operation is, essentially, on automatic. It will report (if you wish) the actons taken to check & tune up.The comfort factor is that you can enable an undo program so that, should you lose you nerve or change you mind about some change, it can be reversed.Full operation has only been a couple of weeks but I'm reassured by the quality of the manual and ease of setting up the options. One brief help desk call was handled with patience and grace. So, I'm comforted by the... 5/5 Robert L. Johnson (Kennett Square, PA) - See all my reviews, January 1, 2012

    deceptive packaging

The problem with this software is in the packaging. What you are buying is a license to use the software for one year. But that fact is revealed in an almost illegible 6-point type (white letters against a broken, half-tone gray background). The manufacturer, obviously, hopes you'll pay for the product before you discover that it's calendar-constrained. I discovered this after I got home; the merchant readily refunded the full purchase price because he couldn't see it either even though I told him what he was looking for. The pertinent text really is that miniscule. Iolo means to hide this information, and they are very successful at doing so. 1/5 Ross R. Works excellent with XP and VISTA

I have been using System Mechanic Professional for several years now. I currently have three laptops and a desktop and this software is a Godsend! It's not difficult to set up the firewall and utilities during the installation process. This software is capable of downloading virus updates every hour and displays ANY problem on it's home screen. To the individuals that rated this product low : (1) you did not invest the time to understand or set up the software OR (2) you are computer illiterate.Iolo's firewall is amazing because it does not conflict with my Windows and wireless router firewall.Occasionally, Iolo will send me half price renewal promotions which is very generous. What else can I say? I'm very happy with this product! 5/5 K. Jasa "Kona" (Midwest) - See all my reviews, April 30, 2009

    Wonderful Product

The System Mechanic Professional is the best product I have invested in. My computer would freeze when I would start it up, but now with the System Mechanic Professional it doesn't freeze up. I am so glad that I invested in this product. I thought I was going to have to buy a new hard drive for my laptop but since using this product I won't have to buy a hard drive. 5/5 Connie A.
