Close, but no cigar
As I write this review for Acronis True Image Home 2012 there are 11 existing reviews on Amazon, and each one of them rated the program 1 star. This is a real disappointment, because TI 2012 (let's just call it TI 12) could potentially be a 5 star program. In this particular version 2012, it *could* be a 4 star program. Reason being, TI does nearly everything that you want a backup program to do. It's massively rich in features. If there's something you need to accomplish related to backing up or restoring your data or operating system, TI 12 likely does it. You can't say that about most backup programs.I can't endorse TI in its current incarnation, but, since I happen to have been searching for the perfect backup program for YEARS, and, since I have been using TI forever, perhaps in pointing out a couple of shortfalls of TI 2012 you can be clued in to what to look for in other backup programs. For example, one cool feature that's hard to find in most backup program is... 3/5 Coastal cruiser (Earth) - See all my reviews This review is from: True Image Home 2012 PC Backup and Recovery (Software) As I write this review for Acronis True Image Home 2012 there are 11 existing reviews on Amazon, and each one of them rated the program 1 star. True Image Home has a Clone Drive tool I've used before to upgrade my system drive to a larger disk. Has worked for me in the past. In this case I was upgrading my data drive from a 2TB MBR to a 3TB GPT drive (GPT is used on any drive over 2TB). The documentation and the knowledge base articles on Acronis site suggested GPT was supported. I bought the program, installed it, and started the clone drive operation. It gives me two options for the clone--clone to a 2TB MBR on the 3TB drive losing 1TB of space, or expand to a 3TB GPT. I pick the latter. It says clearly what it is going to do, e.g. clone the drive to a GPT version. I click okay.Since some Windows files were in use, it told me it needed to reboot my system to complete the operation. I clicked Okay. System never came up again.Boot with a Windows CD. Recover System. Nope. No system partition on drive. Wow. Okay.Go through Chat with Acronis. They tell me GPT is in fact NOT... 1/5 Glenn Connery (Petaluma, CA USA) - See all my reviews, September 2, 2011I Am An Acronis Victim, In Recovery For 1 Minute
Acronis True Image Home Broke Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit.Disaster recovery is supposed to prevent disasters. Acronis True Image Home created a disaster when I tried to uninstall the software. It permanently broke Windows 7's built-in backup feature.I am reasonably tech-savvy. I scoured the internet to fix this problem. I downloaded Acronis's custom uninstaller that is buried deep in their website and only linked to in forum threads. I tried running homebrew registry fixes that were posted online by other Acronis victims. I tried editing the affected registry keys myself, even in "Safe" mode. After hours wasted toying with the Windows registry and various user permissions, Windows 7's built-in backup remains broken. The only way to undo the damage Acronis has done to my computer is to reinstall Windows. The hours of labor I have wasted on this defective product are gone forever. So is my hard-earned money. First the good news. I've been using Acronis True Image for several years. It has saved me more than once, so I was predisposed to like the product. They recently told me that there was an update.. it was cheap.. and they offered additional licenses for free. How could I resist?Well.. in retrospect, I wouldn't have done it. The new user interface is confusing. In fairness, it might just be that it is "different", but I find it hard to use. Second, it's a dog. It seems like I spend a lot of time looking at frozen screens with a "(Not responding)" message in the title bar. I don't recall having that problem with previous versions. I like to start a backup image running as I leave the office for lunch or a meeting. It used to be easy to do that. Now it freezes/pauses in the midst of a lot of questions that it asks you, so I can't just start it and walk away like I used to. It does eventually start working, but it's a frustrating process. I also seem to remember... 1/5 Robert A. Sacks (New England - USA) - See all my reviews, January 13, 2011Probably not a good use of your time
First let me qualify my remarks with my career history. I have well over 20 years in IT, many of which were spent in the area of "operations" and "system administration", both of which include dealing with system backups as a primary component of the job function. So I've been dealing with backups for a while and have a pretty good idea what they should do and how they should do it.To be fair, I'll also point out that my system isn't "standard". I have several different RAID arrays, and back up to an eSATA external hard drive. So this isn't your typical one-drive PC. But the OS deals with all of that just fine, as do all my applications - so a backup program shouldn't care either.I have been looking for a reliable feature-rich backup utility to replace the bare bones backup utility that comes with Windows. I thought I had found it in Acronis Home 2011/2010. It looks good, the feature set is good, and when it works, it is much faster than the Windows... 1/5 Bill Heiser (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: True Image Home 2011 PC Backup and Recovery [Old Version] (CD-ROM) First let me qualify my remarks with my career history. I like it; it does what it's supposed to do
(I've adapted this review from an earlier discussion post because those posts don't affect the product's star ratings.)I've been looking for a drive imaging program for protection in case my HD fails at some point. I'd tried ShadowProtect, but it wouldn't run, and the publisher's tech service people were unable to find the cause. So now I've done a complete image backup with True Image 2009 to an external hard drive, and I've restored individual files from the backup without any problems. I'll also mention that this program was very easy to use, and the user manual is clear. 4/5 J. Brown (CA USA) - See all my reviews, November 15, 2008Works well, but don't forget the updates
Installed easily, and asked permission to set up a partition that a system image is written to. After the install, re-insert the install disk, and choose Update Software from the menu choices. There is already an update out that fixes a couple minor things, like Restore not Restoring; and USBs not USBing.Anyway, after the update was installed the software did what it needed to do. The Backup Tasks can be simple, but if you want there are numerous options available that are well explained in the help page. You can back up your whole disk every day, or backup as little a single file once a month. The scheduling center gives nice overviews of all the tasks and logs of activities. The filters for source and destination are thorough and intuitive, and the menu structures are easy to follow. I backed up my entire c:\ drive to a network hard disk RAID quickly and without any problems, and test restores worked as easily as the backup. I used to use Norton Ghost. Some years ago I switched to Acronis, largely because of the price difference. My Norton ghost 15 report card
Backups get A+:1. Backing up over network, high compression, custom drivers loading is easy to do. You will backup in style2. Superior and useful utilities.3. Every imaginable problem from the legendary Ghost 2003 is fixed and improved.4. No more .gho format anymore. The current format so far has handled some large partition backups for me. Full 30GB partitions to high compression is a breeze.Restores get C-:1. Right away after a partition recover, you will get the message "Please insert the Recovery disk". It will say "Error EA730002: Cannot find the driver database directory". How does this error stay in the product? It is one confusing message for a successful recovery. The recovery disk is really just the ghost CD.2. Then there is the staged recovery mystery. With 2 identical machines of the same hardware, I can only restore to the machine where I initially did the cold backups. I don't... 3/5 B. I must be dreaming, Acronis reality actually meets Acronis marketing hype!
True Image 2010 worked reliably for me, including 2 actual bootable hard-drive restorations. I've been using Acronis True Image in several versions over the years, and the previous 2009 edition was the nadir of their product line. For me at least, Acronis has redeemed themselves after the erratic and dangerous-to-your-data behavior of their last edition.Pros: Disk imaging for TOTAL disk restoration capabilities, full and incremental backup, selective directory/file type data backup, editing capability of the backup image, back-up image mounting as a logical drive for easy viewing and cut & paste from image to other drives with Windows Explorer, live backup (use computer while backing), recovery manager in conjunction with Acronis Secure Zone (restoration of operating system drive while still having use of computer), bootable CD with backup and recovery capabilities, bootable from image of disk.Cons: None that I could find so far. After purchasing a 1TB external USB drive so that I can make backups of my (64bit) laptop's 500GB HDD, I've been trying out many different backup programs. In the past, I had been using Ghost 2003 (DOS boot floppy) -- which I considered one of the best pieces of software ever created. I never bothered with the actual Window's Ghost 2003 install, other than simply just to create a boot floppy. Once I had a working boot floppy, I uninstalled the Window's Ghost 2003. My preferred method of doing backups is very simply. I simply want to boot into the backup program externally from any installed OS and manually perform backup/restores with an external USB HDD. I have no desire for automated backups. In the past, Ghost 2003 (DOS boot floppy) worked faithfully for me over many years covering (32bit) Win98, Win2000, WinXP, Linux, FreeBSD, and even Vista. While in recent years, I would have to manually repair the MBR and bootloaders after restores with Ghost 2003, it still remained... 2/5 KD "KD" (USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Acronis True Image Home 2010 [Old Version] (CD-ROM) After purchasing a 1TB external USB drive so that I can make backups of my (64bit) laptop's 500GB HDD, I've been trying out many different backup programs. I've been an Acronis user for a long time. I decided to upgrade to True Image 2010 from True Image 10 in preparation for upgrading to Windows 7. I'm running Vista SP2 32 bit on a Dell XPS M1530. This setup has been running very well for me without any problems for over a year. However, this install gave me a blue screen of death right at the end of the install process. A quick search on Google showed that many people were complaining of this problem. Following advice I found from the search, I ended up uninstalling my old version of True Image 10 and using Regedit to manually remove registry settings this install added. This time the software installed. I thought I was home free.I was wrong. After rebooting and running I got another blue screen of death. I went to the Acronis site to get support and found that I had to PAY TO GET SUPPORT!!! There is no email nor a phone number for support unless you pay! There are support forums, but it's entirely self service and not well... 1/5 Ed E. (Phoenix, AZ United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Excellent Software for Backing Up Your OS Installation
A couple of months ago there was a power outage, and even though my UPS kicked in, the auto-shutdown software didn't. When I tried to reboot, there was a Blue Screen of Death waiting for me. I tried everything from reinstalling XP, to recovery console, safe mode, BIOS fiddling, nothing worked.I didn't have any backups, so I was out of luck. But as I went through the incredibly time consuming drudgery of reinstalling Windows and 50 or so other programs that I had on my original install, I kept thinking to myself, "there has to be a better way".So I decided to spare no expense. My first purchase was a 2TB external hard-drive (split to 1TB with RAID 1), and my second was this software. And it works like a charm for my use (btw, I don't consider DVD backups to be a viable option). The first step in backing up my new install was to establish a secure zone on my RAIDed drive (about 25 GB). This is a special partition invisible to the OS (and viruses,... 5/5 Jesse H. Schexnayder "schex86" (Fairbanks, AK) - See all my reviews, November 3, 2007I thought I did my homework/research ........
Here's a caveat: your mileage may vary! Reviews are reflective of individual preferences and experiences. In the case of software, especially for Windows, there are so many potential gotchas and hazards within each unique system that what is true and good for one system may be disaster for the next. In my case I have three computers and they are all different models, brands, versions of Windows, and my experience with installing the very same software on all three does not always result in the same outcome for all three. With that said, my two cents' worth on Acronis v. 11 is --- DISASTER waiting to happen. Let me say up front that I've been in the I.T./I.S. biz since 1969, my most recent job was Director of Technology Services for a mid-size company. I know PCs and Windows. When I look for a new product to fulfill a need I always perform due diligence. I thought so, anyway. By process of elimination I decided to install the trial version of Acronis True Image Home v. 11... 1/5 Cutedeedle "CDJ" (Whidbey Island, WA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I purchased this software to have a robust ability to restore my hard drive completely (not just user data) in the case of a drive failure. This is what the "image backup" functionality is for, to allow you to re-create a fully-operational version of your system very quickly in the event of a drive failure. (As opposed to just a data backup, which still requires you to reinstall the operating system, programs, and all your user settings again from scratch.)So, here's my take:1) First, any of the positive reviews that have not actually tried to use their backups to restore should really not be given much weight. If you can backup fine, but can't restore, what's the point?2) I am running Windows Vista with a 1 TB drive, and this program worked fine in creating the image backup.3) When my drive started throwing off errors, and I replaced it with a new one, I went to my Acronis boot CD to restore from my backup image (on an external drive.)
