Upgrade? Quicken 2011 = more ads + less features = FAIL

It was bad enough when Quicken simply littered your desktop with icons linking to Quicken Loans, Free Credit Reports (which are never free) and a sundry of other financial pay-to-play products. Now they've taken things to a whole new level with ads literally BUILT INTO the GUI (Graphic User Interface: the 'skin' with which you engage with the program). An example: in the new 'refinance calculator' there is a large banner ad for CHASE BANK. The refinance calculator itself is poor and majorly inferior to free ones available online, but more on that later. I don't expect to pay upwards of $50.00 for a piece of software that contains banner ads! That is simply unacceptable. In freeware, I understand it, but not in something I paid full retail for!Adding insult to injury, INTUIT has actually removed one of the best features of previous Quicken releases, the CASH FLOW monthly chart. They've replaced it with a projected balances chart which is ugly, harder to read, and doesn't... 1/5 Nathan Beauchamp "ConsumerAdvocate" (Oak Park, IL USA) - See all my reviews, November 5, 2010

    Removed Most Important Feature

I have been a loyal user of Quicken since 1994 and upgraded whenever each new version was released. This is the first time that I have returned the product. One of the features that I use every day is the Cash Flow center in the Planning tab. This has been removed. It is completely incomprehensible to me why they would remove this feature. At a glance, it completely encapsulated my cash flow for the month, both graphically and numerically. Their new "Projected Balances" feature is completely inferior. When I checked out the Quicken forums to find out where it had been hidden, my worst fears were confirmed about its removal. There was discussion about Quicken attempting to simply the product, but I don't understand why they have to remove features for the savvy user. My fear is that this feature is gone for good and I will be stuck with Quicken 2010 until they no longer support it! 1/5 Twilight - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Not sure it is worth the trouble

Some things have improved with Quicken 2011, some things seem not to work as well as previous versions and things quicken can't couldn't do in the past it still can't do.Negatives (after a couple of days):1) If you trade options or anything but the most mundane investment products, forget about tracking them in Quicken. Prior versions couldn't do it and 2011 can't either. I dont' even bother to download invesmtent transactions anymore. It's easier to track them in excel. At least I can download option quotes in excel. Forget it in quicken.2) Downloading credit card / bank transactions has become more cumbersome with each new version of quicken. It's almost to the point where it just isn't worth it anymore. A major issue for me is an almost complete inability of quicken to correctly match downloaded transactions. Even though I have no transactions that need to be matched, quicken just arbitrarily (seems that way anyway) picks old transactions to... 2/5 spinningwood - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) So So, probably don't need to upgrade

So Amazon started selling the digital download on Oct 1, the physical item starts shipping Oct 4 and the product still isn't called out on the manufacture's website. Select a product from their product list and it still takes you to the 2011 version. Can't be that big of an improvement if the company isn't even promoting it on their website. Makes you wonder. Here is how my first hour went. After purchase I had the software downloaded and installed with-in 20-30 minutes. Prompted by the first step of the welcome screen I began setting up my accounts. At first I wasn't sure what was happening because it would saying it's connecting and getting data. Then the screen would disappear and start all over. Quicken 2012 is a buggy disappointment. Each year Intuit changes the look a little bit, adds one trivial feature, breaks a few things, then ships it like it's a "new product". And each year like a sheep I buy it, thinking "this time it'll be worth it". About half the time, I ask for my money back.I am trying 2012 after using 2010 for the last two years. Honestly, I would try something else... but sadly there *is* nothing else. The look is a little nicer than 2010, and everything else is very much the same... except for these bugs, which I saw in the first 15 minutes of use:Bugs:1) When you are entering a transaction as a transfer, it shows *all* your accounts... even closed accounts or accounts that you have marked as "hide". This is clearly a huge bug and a huge hassle. Total Disaster. Avoid.

I'm a compulsive upgrader so I pulled the trigger on this. Wish I hadn't. I spent a lot of time setting up monthly budgets (i.e. where I could easily track household monthly spending). When you click on the prgress bar in the "new" budgets, it gives you not the amount you have spent that month, but the last 3 months instead. Totally useless. Also - not all of my stocks automatically update anymore - i have to click on the security and hit "upate." Not helpfulFinally, a weird bug - each day it gives me a weird message saying "Looks like your system clock has changed (yeah - the previous day ended and the new one began)"Would you like to restart Quicken?"This used to be the best finance software - no longer. Maybe they are spending all of their time and money on the online version? In any event, stay with the version you have, save the money. 1/5 B. Business as usual...

I have a love hate relationship with Quicken. It is a great concept; it is very helpful in managing personal finances and is a program I use daily. I don't buy the upgrades every year, if they can be called upgrades, but the last version I had was Quicken 2006. I held off buying 2010 for a few months knowing 2011's release was around the corner. I learned I don't like not having access to my finances daily. During that time I tried all sorts of other types of financial programs, but none were close to Quicken, which is scary because as much as I like it, the actual program is TERRIBLE - for length of time it has been available. Mint.com(Owned by Intuit/Quicken) was the only program I thought was very good, but it is terrible for investments. Overall, I see very little difference in this version than my 2006 one; clearly there are a few new features but certainly nothing that made me jump up and down. MS Money User

Well, I finally made the switch from MS Money Premium to Quicken Premier 2011 and to my surprise it wasn't that bad. I searched to see what other MS Money users were doing about giving up MS Money, found some web sites that offered potential solutions, but nothing I found was going to give me what I had with MS Money - all my accounts in one place. Quicken was my only option. Unfortunately, after reading the reviews about Quicken I wasn't excited about moving to Quicken. I kept waiting and hoping someone would find a better solution for us MS Money users but it got to the point where I couldn't wait any longer, especially with the online services going away. I confirmed with my bank that they supported Quicken 2011 (unfortunately with a $9.95 monthly charge for bill pay through Quicken), purchased the package from Amazon, and installed it as soon as it arrived. Since I read all the bad reviews about the problems Money users had importing their data into Quicken, I thought I would skip... 4/5 K. Previous Quicken Users -- Beware!!!!!

I purchased this product because I upgraded to Windows 7 and my old Quicken Deluxe is not W7 compatible. Nowhere in the product description did it mention that I would not be able to open my old files with this product since they were created on the "Deluxe" version. I no longer need any of the "Deluxe" features, that's why I chose this most basic version. So, if you have used any product other than "Basic" in the past, this product will not work for you. Not at all complicated...

For many years I have been a Microsoft Money user and have been extremely happy with it, but now since they are becoming obsolete, I had to make a change. New to Quicken, it was very easy to move all my files over. No problem whatsoever. I do banking with several different banks and several different accounts in each one, but have not had any problem connecting with them. At first I thought that it wouldn't send my bill payments out and was going to return the program to Amazon and upgrade from the Starter edition, however, I found that the software worked just fine in doing that job for me. So, it really does all that I need it to do for me. Do have a small problem with my regular checking acct in that one entry is missing and I can't find it yet so the online balance and my balance are a few dollars off. If worse comes to worse, I'll just make an adjustment somewhere to straighten it out so I won't get myself all in a tither over it..... Oh, I also have tried Mint.com, which... 4/5 Lee Wagar (Springfield, TN) - See all my reviews, November 10, 2010

If you already have Home & Office, you can't update to Starter Edition

After years of using Quicken Home and Office, and since I don't use the majority of the program, I decided to update the program to the 2011 edition. All I wanted was the 2011 Starter Edition and after many frustrating hours on the phone with Intuit, discovered that you cannot go from the Home & Office version to Stater Edition. No where on Quicken's web site does it mention that fact. Raheed, customer service rep from Intuit, told me that "there was no where on the website that it said it would work either!" It took me three weeks to get my money back, and only after I contacted Amazon. Once again they stand behind the products they sell, even if the company doesn't. 1/5 JandJ - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) No where on Quicken's web site does it mention that fact. Raheed, customer service rep from Intuit, told me that "there was no where on the website that it said it would work either!" It took me three weeks to get my money back, and only after I contacted Amazon. Once again they stand behind the products they sell, even if the company doesn't. As noted in the first post, if you have any other version of Quicken, you will end up shilling out another $30 or more to open your file via an upgrade. I am a mobilized Army soldier away from home. When my laptop gave out and I replaced it, I restored my data files to the new laptop. As I don't have access to my original software (at my house) I thought I would just go ahead and buy the starter version (which has everything I need) to use with my .QDF file. Wrong! The starter version won't open or read my "deluxe" version file. Hence, another $30 spent on the "upgrade". Now I know why Quicken was "free" when MS Money discontinued their software... I am very disappointed in this company and feel totally taken advantage of. 1/5 Kathy - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This product sucks!

One would think that after 20-ish years of developing the premier accounting software they would work out the most basic, annoying and dysfunctional kinks...but not with this proiduct. Despite having read other reviews warning me that the product does not sync properly with "supported" banks, I bought the product. Within 20 minutes of download, it is absolutely worthless as it will not sync with multiple accounts from the same bank (i.e. checking AND savings). So, finding out how poor this product is was lesson #1. Lesson #2 was learning that Amazon will not allow you to return downloadable software purchases, so I am stuck with a purchase that is worthless. Shame on you Quicken and Amazon for selling this product. 1/5 reasonable guy - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Buyer Beware

Before you purchase Quicken 2012 Starter Edition make sure your previous version isn't something more such as one of the Quicken Deluxe versions. If you are using one of the Quicken Deluxe versions you will not be able to convert and use your existing data file without investing another $30 to upgrade the software you just purchased to Quicken 2012 Deluxe Edition. 2/5 FredM - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Minor Upgrade from Quicken 2010

I was not a beta tester and was not "encouraged" to write a glowing review by Intuit. This review only speaks to the question of whether this is a worthwhile upgrade from the 2010 version. The 2011 version contains very few new features when compared to the 2010 version. Whether you find these new features worth the upgrade price is debatable. The quicken site is a bit misleading in their "new features" list since many of the items they mention were already in the 2010 version. As with past Quicken upgrades, they largely give you MORE of a existing feature, and not much in the way of new features. So, for example, MORE banks are supported for direct connect. MORE transactions can be automatically categorized since auto-categorization already existed. So in these cases, if your banks are already supported and you don't use auto-categorization, then these enhancements are irrelevant. So for those thinking of upgrading from 2010, here's the list of only NEW features in the 2011... 4/5 Steve Kowal (Louisville, CO) - See all my reviews, October 20, 2010

    Very Disappointed

This purchase was a huge disappointment. The software is new and there were only nine reviews, but they were all extremely positive, so I felt confident taking the plunge. I was so excited in fact, that I paid a premium to download rather than wait for UPS. In retrospect, I should have paid more attention to the eerie similarity between the reviews, and in fact they were all from beta testers (shills?) perhaps working off the same talking points. The new version was supposed to run faster and work with twice the number of financial institutions. But this is not what I experienced. I was fairly content with Home and Business 2008. The only reason I downloaded 2011 is because I want to access certain accounts that 2008 cannot, such as my 401K with ADP, my kids 529's with New York State, and a savings/loan account with Sallie Mae. Turns out none of these accounts are accessible with 2011! It was a complete waste and it actually runs slower than 2008. Don't be snookered like me,... 1/5 Naomi Lynn - See all my reviews This review is from: Quicken Home & Business 2011 [Download] [OLD VERSION] (Software Download) This purchase was a huge disappointment. Best available or bad joke?

(running this product on Windows 7 home premium, 64 bit edition)I have been using Quicken 2008 Deluxe for the past 3 years. The process of sunsetting older versions is annoying, but ultimately necessary I believe. This allows the product staff to focus on making new versions better vs. endless patching of legacy products. I think staying current with this type of application is particularly important since it holds so much of your personal financial data. You really do want the latest so that encryption standards and security settings are at their maximum. Especially if you use the one step update with Quicken and the password vault.A note on upgrading from previous versions: Make sure you have the current backup file where you can find it. Haven't found it too useful, yet.

I'm experienced with computer programs and have used Quick Books before. I bought this because someone else who was experienced, gave it a good review and said it was helpful. I find that it mainly teaches about each and every menu item and doesn't guide you through questions you might have and offer solutions. I've found I can learn Quicken just as well by looking through the menus. 2/5 Michael Lambert (Fort Collins, CO) - See all my reviews, January 15, 2011

    Simply The Best

I have used Quicken for a long time and it gets better each year. While Quicken has a lot of online help I like to take a book out to the deck and read up on some of the new features. The book does not cover every single topic in great detail but it is suitable for a first time user and an experienced user looking for the newest features. Well worth the money. Lots of screen examples and suggestions on how to master the power of Quicken. 5/5 BT "Bill in Houston" - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) NOT a reference manual-- Faster to Google a Question

Save your money and use Google. The index is _horrible_. I challenge a novice to use the index to answer a question like "How do I import a QIF file?" Look for 'import', right? 'QIF'? Wrong on both. Neither is the index. I'm an IT professional and it took me a few minutes to stumble upon 'Data files, importing into Quicken'. But the answer isn't there--that section deals with converting from MS Money, which itself is a horror show. Common(?) things like Employee Stock Options aren't even in the book but a Google search returns the answer in the first link on the list. I'd return the book if I could. 2/5 Johnny B "Send lawyers, guns, and money" (Charlotte North Carolina) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Not much new here

I purchased Quicken 2010 Deluxe today from a retail store. I believe the official release date is tomorrow, but they had it in stock for sale, although it was hidden in a corner of the store with only a few copies, so not exactly a big promotion. I installed it in about 10 minutes on my Vista laptop without any issues. The installation process first removed my Quicken 2007 software, installed Quicken 2010, checked for updates over the internet, and then converted my Quicken 2007 data file. The entire process went very smoothly. The interface in 2010 is slightly different from 2007, but mainly just different colors and slightly different graphic formats. Other than that, I've poked around just about every feature to look for something that this product does different from 2007 and could not find much of anything. The only convenient change that I have noticed so far is that when I back up my data, the data is now contained in one file, rather than having six different... 3/5 OC Resident (Huntington Beach, CA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Quicken Deluxe 2010 [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM) I purchased Quicken 2010 Deluxe today from a retail store. Is Intuit out of ideas?

I upgraded from Quicken 2009, installed on 64-bit Windows Vista. No problem while upgrading or data transformation. I used it 3 days and saw following changes in Quicken 2010 -1. Now I can configure which tabs to show on main panel, options include Bills, Banking, Investing, Planning, etc . I was waiting for this feature, not a big deal but kind of handy when you want to get control of what you want to see.2. Now Quicken is creating one data file instead of multiple files it used to create for 2009 version. So easy to carry / copy data files.3. Startup time has improved.4. Look and Feel of user interface has changed.I don't know if Intuit made any important under-hood changes or security upgrades but releasing products every year without any significant changes in user experience doesn't make any sense to me. They are also forcing people to upgrade every 3-years, that is very short product life cycle. I think Intuit is out of ideas or solid release... 4/5 L. After installing I was very disappointed to find that the free online version actually was better suited for my needs than the purchased copy.
