Quicken is a convenient way to keep track of personal finances, but many people are unaware of Quickens power and end up using only the basic features. Sometimes Quicken raises more questions than it answers: Return of capital from stock? Net worth? What are they and why do you need to know about them? Luckily, Quicken 2009: The Missing Manual picks up where Quickens help resources leave off. Youll find step-by-step instructions for using Quicken on your Windows PC, including useful features such as budgeting, recording investment transactions, and archiving Quicken data fi

    Quicken 2009 extremely slow

I've been using Quicken Deluxe for about 6 years. I just upgraded to Quicken Deluxe 2009 and it 20 seconds to look at an account and 10 seconds to process any transaction which makes it basically unusable. After working with Quicken support for an hour and verifying the data file, support said that 2009 didn't support large data files well, they suggested I just delete all my old transactions every year and it would be much faster. Of course that defeats the whole purpose of using Quicken. My quicken data file has about 20MB of data and quicken 2007 used about 200MB of ram to open it. Quicken 2009 now uses about 1.2GB of ram to open the same file. 1/5 Mr. D. Spindler - See all my reviews, September 18, 2008

    Quicken 2009 Major disappointment!

As with every other new Quicken annual update, Quicken 2009 Premier has been released prematurely with numerous problems! The program simply fails to download transactions from many financial institutions but gives you an erroneous online update summary that the account was successfully updated! And the technical support for Intuit products can be summarized in one word: "Nonexistant"! Intuit has created a Quicken Community forum where everybody gripes about there non-working programs, but no solutions are offered here. And worst of all Intuit no longer has effective telephone support! Oh yes you can email them and request a callback that will occur within thirty minutes. I've been waiting for my callback for a week. In summary, don't buy this product till they get the bugs out which will be at least six months from now. 1/5 R. H. Download Quotes Doesn't Work

It's very frustrating, but after years of using Quicken, they've finally given sufficient reason to abandon it. Download of financial information has not worked for over a month; erroneous prices get imported into the program, and it take hours to remove it. Quicken's response is to say 2 things simultaneously: 1. They fixed it, and 2. Mutual fund price download doesn't work. Unless you agree with that definition of "fixed," it's time to look elsewhere. 1/5 J. Kainen (NYC) - See all my reviews, September 12, 2008

    Good basic instruction

First, some background on why I purchased this book. I am new to using personal financial management software (Excel has always sufficed in the past) and, after a great deal of poking around on the web, I chose Quicken primarily due to the fact that MS Money no longer supports sub-categories for expenses. I downloaded the trial version of Quicken Deluxe and just started playing around. After a couple of hours of trial and error, I had all of my accounts linked to One Step Update and all of my transactions had been downloaded and categorized. At this point, I was really smitten with Quicken. I decided to take the plunge and purchase it and went out looking for a good reference book on how to use all of Quicken's features. After even more poking around on the web and reading dozens of reviews here on Amazon, it seemed like The Missing Manual was the best reference guide.Unfortunately, I have been less than impressed with this book. Take me back to Quicken 2008 please!

I would not recommend this upgrade to anybody that downloads transactions from their financial institutions. There appears to be a major bug (well documented in the Quicken user forums) which prevents downloaded transactions from matching entries currently in your registries. So far Quicken refuses to acknowledge this problem even though many, many customers are experiencing it. This bug creates a totally manual system of matching downloaded entries which greatly decreases the value of even having downloaded transactions to begin with. I have been a long time Quicken customer and user and this is by far the most bug prone release I have seen. I would switch back to Quicken 2008 in an instant because at least the core product worked there. If you thinking about buying this product I wouldn't. You will regret it just like me. 1/5 Derek Newman (Grapevine, TX USA) - See all my reviews, September 14, 2008

You're renting the software, not buying it

Quicken really needs to acknowledge that they are renting this software to you for 3 years; you aren't buying anything that will work beyond that. They sunset their software every three years, crippling it to force you to upgrade to a newer version. I can understand not releasing patches, and not supporting a product, but there's no reason to disable features that are working just fine. I really wish Quicken would just be upfront, bill this as a subscription service, and charge us $20 a year. I don't really want to take the hit to migrate over to another solution for financial tracking, but if you can avoid getting tangled up in their web, avoid this product, unless you don't mind being forced to shell out more money every 3 years. 1/5 Brian Sensale (Somerville, MA USA) - See all my reviews, January 9, 2009

Don't believe the horror stories, it's about the same as Quicken 2006

This was a pre-emptive upgrade due to Quicken's sunset policy. I previously owned Quicken 2006 and was happily running it on Vista. The good news: it's just as functional as Quicken '06, at least for the features that I use (banking, investing, property and debt). The bad news: I had to upgrade for no significant improvement to the software. But anyway, don't believe the horror stories about online banking. I initially had the same problems as the other posters, but that was resolved for me in the update to R2 (which you will immediately download), and even prior to the correction was never as horrible for me as other posters describe. Yes, there is a bit of a learning curve, but all-in-all there is no significant difference between Q06 and Q09. This is both good and bad. The good is that the new version contains all of the functionality that I relied upon in Q06. The bad is that Q06 fulfilled my needs nicely... Upgrade? Quicken 2011 = more ads + less features = FAIL

It was bad enough when Quicken simply littered your desktop with icons linking to Quicken Loans, Free Credit Reports (which are never free) and a sundry of other financial pay-to-play products. Now they've taken things to a whole new level with ads literally BUILT INTO the GUI (Graphic User Interface: the 'skin' with which you engage with the program). An example: in the new 'refinance calculator' there is a large banner ad for CHASE BANK. The refinance calculator itself is poor and majorly inferior to free ones available online, but more on that later. I don't expect to pay upwards of $50.00 for a piece of software that contains banner ads! That is simply unacceptable. In freeware, I understand it, but not in something I paid full retail for!Adding insult to injury, INTUIT has actually removed one of the best features of previous Quicken releases, the CASH FLOW monthly chart. They've replaced it with a projected balances chart which is ugly, harder to read, and doesn't... 1/5 Nathan Beauchamp "ConsumerAdvocate" (Oak Park, IL USA) - See all my reviews, November 5, 2010

    Removed Most Important Feature

I have been a loyal user of Quicken since 1994 and upgraded whenever each new version was released. This is the first time that I have returned the product. One of the features that I use every day is the Cash Flow center in the Planning tab. This has been removed. It is completely incomprehensible to me why they would remove this feature. At a glance, it completely encapsulated my cash flow for the month, both graphically and numerically. Their new "Projected Balances" feature is completely inferior. When I checked out the Quicken forums to find out where it had been hidden, my worst fears were confirmed about its removal. There was discussion about Quicken attempting to simply the product, but I don't understand why they have to remove features for the savvy user. My fear is that this feature is gone for good and I will be stuck with Quicken 2010 until they no longer support it! 1/5 Twilight - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Not sure it is worth the trouble

Some things have improved with Quicken 2011, some things seem not to work as well as previous versions and things quicken can't couldn't do in the past it still can't do.Negatives (after a couple of days):1) If you trade options or anything but the most mundane investment products, forget about tracking them in Quicken. Prior versions couldn't do it and 2011 can't either. I dont' even bother to download invesmtent transactions anymore. It's easier to track them in excel. At least I can download option quotes in excel. Forget it in quicken.2) Downloading credit card / bank transactions has become more cumbersome with each new version of quicken. It's almost to the point where it just isn't worth it anymore. A major issue for me is an almost complete inability of quicken to correctly match downloaded transactions. Even though I have no transactions that need to be matched, quicken just arbitrarily (seems that way anyway) picks old transactions to... 2/5 spinningwood - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Disappointed for my needs

I am new to Quicken but have used MS Money for years. I thought I could use a guide book to help with some of the issues related to small to not so major features...such as budgeting, savings plan, tax planning, etc. From what I reviewed on such topics, I thought the author isn't telling anything more than what you can see on the screen itself and perhaps figure things out on your own. Not much of any insights into how the features may be of benefit, why not or why you need to use them, etc. It is more of a rewritten user manual...if there ever was one. Less than what you may need if you are beyond a novice user. I am replacing it with "the missing manual". 2/5 S. Shah "true tiger" (Triangle, NC USA) - See all my reviews, April 7, 2009

So So, probably don't need to upgrade

So Amazon started selling the digital download on Oct 1, the physical item starts shipping Oct 4 and the product still isn't called out on the manufacture's website. Select a product from their product list and it still takes you to the 2011 version. Can't be that big of an improvement if the company isn't even promoting it on their website. Makes you wonder. Here is how my first hour went. After purchase I had the software downloaded and installed with-in 20-30 minutes. Prompted by the first step of the welcome screen I began setting up my accounts. At first I wasn't sure what was happening because it would saying it's connecting and getting data. Then the screen would disappear and start all over. I Finally figure out that it has to access each checking, savings, or credit card account individually even though it's all under the same user account. So what appeared as being stuck in a loop / bug was really just poor programming design. The process picked up my... 3/5 Jeremy Johnson (Washington State) - See all my reviews, October 4, 2011

Same crap as the last two versions...

Quicken 2012 is a buggy disappointment. Each year Intuit changes the look a little bit, adds one trivial feature, breaks a few things, then ships it like it's a "new product". And each year like a sheep I buy it, thinking "this time it'll be worth it". About half the time, I ask for my money back.I am trying 2012 after using 2010 for the last two years. Honestly, I would try something else... but sadly there *is* nothing else. The look is a little nicer than 2010, and everything else is very much the same... except for these bugs, which I saw in the first 15 minutes of use:Bugs:1) When you are entering a transaction as a transfer, it shows *all* your accounts... even closed accounts or accounts that you have marked as "hide". This is clearly a huge bug and a huge hassle. Nice quality control.2) When you look at a budget item in a montly view, then click on a budget item... it shows an unsorted list of items from many... 2/5 Robert W. Total Disaster. Avoid.

I'm a compulsive upgrader so I pulled the trigger on this. Wish I hadn't. I spent a lot of time setting up monthly budgets (i.e. where I could easily track household monthly spending). When you click on the prgress bar in the "new" budgets, it gives you not the amount you have spent that month, but the last 3 months instead. Totally useless. Also - not all of my stocks automatically update anymore - i have to click on the security and hit "upate." Not helpfulFinally, a weird bug - each day it gives me a weird message saying "Looks like your system clock has changed (yeah - the previous day ended and the new one began)"Would you like to restart Quicken?"This used to be the best finance software - no longer. Maybe they are spending all of their time and money on the online version? In any event, stay with the version you have, save the money. 1/5 B. As an experienced user, I skipped a lot of the book. I bought it because I have not read "the manual" in 4 years. About 20% of the book of was useful to me, but that was enough. 4/5 Max H. Sherman (Moraga, CA United States) - See all my reviews, December 20, 2008

Long time user: worst upgrade in a long time

My comments apply to the Amazon download version on Windows/Vista. I upgraded from Quicken Deluxe 2007.The issues I have are in two categories:1. The Install experience2. The performance of the new softwareI'm giving the software a one star rating because it lost some of my data, something I consider unforgivable for any software product, but especially one that keeps financial data.INSTALLINGAfter ordering the software on Amazon (super easy, as usual) you are prompted to download the software. As soon as the download starts it requests permission to install an Amazon package to manage the download. After that is done, the software is downloaded and installed.Installation Issues:- It deleted the previous version of Quicken without my permission!- It installed a replacement for the Google Desktop Toolbar.- After that new toolbar was up and running it asked after the fact if I wanted to restore the... 1/5 D. Not for former MS Money users

I am a former MS Money user and was looking forward to effortlessly importing my data files into Quicken 2010 as promised by Intuit. The reality so far is a nightmare. Before I continue I consider myself very knowledgeable in dealing with Computer and software issues. I purchased and attempted to install Quicken Premier 2010 on October 10, 2009. The software loaded without problems. When you first open the program you are given 3 options on how to proceed. I chose the option that says I want to import my data from MS Money. As soon as I selected this and clicked on the get started button, the program crashed. I closed and reopened the program, only to get to a new screen that does not show the previous choices. After various attempts to get back to the original screen failed, I opened a chat session with customer support. After a 30 minute wait, I was connected and an agent helped with an alternate method to import the Money data. The import was successful and I thought I was good to... 1/5 Joyce "mugz" - See all my reviews This review is from: Quicken Premier 2010 [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM) I am a former MS Money user and was looking forward to effortlessly importing my data files into Quicken 2010 as promised by Intuit. Minor Upgrade from Q2009 -- Nice Changes

I picked up QP2010 locally this afternoon. (I've been running QP2009 for the past year.) There doesn't appear to be a lot of "new" features so much as GUI changes. BTW, after installing and before converting the data set, Q checks for and downloads updates. In the "About Quicken" window, QP2010 reports it's running R2. I always upgrade early if not on day one, and this is the first time I've started with a release other than R1.One really nice interface change is that it's now possible to use the "classic" interface, and you're able to turn off both the account bar and the new "action bar." As always, we can turn off the tool bar if we wish. The "action bar" is rather like MS's "ribbon" interface but not as elaborate or as space consuming. This feature allows users to regain some vertical space.Instead of having the usual several-file data set, all Quicken data is now packaged in the *.QDF file. Prior to upgrading from QP2009, I copied my (multi-year)... 4/5 M. Wilson "twokatmew" (Michigan, USA) - See all my reviews, October 11, 2009
