Great Price, Great Size, and a Few Compromises
I have mixed feelings about my HP1910. Overall, I like it and I carry it with me most of the time. What I don't like about it, though, is its battery life - but I am getting a little ahead of myself.I obtained it to replace my HP Jornada 568 when it malfunctioned. The 568 was a great device that I used primarily as a phone book and a book reader, with occasional MP3 playing, gaming, and note taking. I really liked my Jornada and was upset when it died.What originally attracted me to the 1910 was its price and its size. At ... list price, it is one of the lowest cost Pocket PC's available. There may be 1 or 2 others avail for less, but I was rushing to find a replacement and this was one that I could obtain quickly. Sizewise, it is smaller than all Pocket PC's I've ever seen and even smaller than some Palms. everything you expect but still missing
I've been a PDA for about 4 years. Started out with a Compaq iPaq running Windows CE and loved it. When I dropped it and the screen broke, my extended warrantee replaced it with a Palm Vx and it did the job but I always wanted a Windows CE again. The newer iPaq models were just too large for my needs. When I saw the 1910 I ditched the Vx and Pocket PC is everything I remembered and more.The screen on this is fantastic. Super bright and extremely vibrant. Way better than the monochrome on my old iPaq and my Vx.If you use Microsoft Outlook, Pocket PC is must have. The one thing I really like is when you sync with MS Outlook you get all the information (i.e. multiple address, all phone numbers, etc.) unlike the Palm where it was a partial sync. The size is amazing. Smaller than my Vx and iPaq, it makes it very nice when you're on the go. Great Basic PDA!
I have owned several pda's including those based on Palm OS as well as Pocket PC. My most recent day-to-day pda was an iPAQ 3835 which I loved. However, I recently purchased the iPAQ 1910 and am really impressed. I originally purchased the unit for its size and screen and thought I would use it to supplement my 3835. But after only a few days, I am now using the 1910 exclusively. Not only does it have the best screen on the market and is really small, but I have been surprised by its battery life, the ability to change batteries, its processing speed despite a less sophisticated processor and the overall quality of the unit. It also uses the same chargers and USB cables as I was using for my 3835. Bottom line, it's a great unit for a reasonable price. 5/5 0, January 21, 2003

The iPAQ 1945 - A Pocket PC Approaching Perfection
The iPAQ 1945, also sold as the iPAQ 1940, is the first in a line of planned successors to the iPAQ 1910. HP has addressed many of the concerns that 1910 users had, namely that the 1910 was too slow and lacked hardware expansion options. The 1945 is powered by a new 266MHz processor from Samsung which rivals, and sometimes surpasses, the usable speed of many XScale chips from Intel. Other features of the iPAQ 1945 include 64MB of RAM (56MB of which are user accessible), a crisp, bright transflective color screen, onboard Bluetooth wireless, and a Secure Digital slot which can use SD flash memory cards and SDIO peripherals such as 802.11b WLAN cards. Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC replaced Pocket PC 2002 as the most current Pocket PC OS in June 2003 and comes installed on the 1945. Best PPC for most people
I felt compelled to write a review of this great device after reading a terribly uniformed review from someone that doesn't even own the device. The good!Size - The smallest on the market. Fits nicely in your pocket without feeling like you're carrying a brick, unlike so many other PPCs.Speed - Many benchmarks rate this unit faster than the 2215, which uses a 400mhz Intel processor. The best PocketPC to come along in a long time
First off, I feel the criticisms of the 2-star review posted July 25th need to be addressed, because some of them are in error (why do people write reviews for things they don't own?)...1). The ARM9 core Samsung S3C2410 CPU in the 1945 is actually quite fast. Don't be fooled by a 266MHz clock speed compared to 400MHz XScale devices - this device runs multimedia apps and games faster than most other PocketPC models. I've done the benchmarks and framerate tests myself - it's impressive. Why? because despite the XScale hype, almost no apps or games are optimized for this Intel CPU, so ARM based processors can actually perform faster. The Samsung CPU also handles many functions internally, while the XScales still rely on a 100MHz external bus (the new PXA-255 processors use a 200MHz internal bus). Also, the 1945 isn't any 'hotter' than other PocketPC models I have owned. In fact, it stays quite cool.2). The 1945 has 56.66MB of available system RAM out of 64 - NOT 46. Great mini-computer, but not a beginners handheld
My Palm Zire 31 recently died of a traumatic screen impact. I had every intention of replacing it with another of the same, but after poking at handheld display models around town, I decided to upgrade from my Palm to a Pocket PC.I found the Pocket PC to be aptly named. It really is a pocket sized mini-computer. There's a fossil PC in my basement with less memory, less storage, a slower processor, and absolutely no multi-media capabilities. It cost over $3000 in 1996. The iPaq rx3115 cost 1/10 the price and delivers so much more. I am really impressed.I chose the rx3115 over the rz1715 because the rx3115 has built in wi-fi and bluetooth. You can buy a wi-fi card for the rz1715, but it costs about $80 and takes up your only SD slot. The rx3115 is $100 more than the rz1715, so it seemed more efficient to just spend the extra $20 on the better model. If you never expect to need wi-fi, go ahead and save the $100. Great device for a casual user
I will not go into the details of the product as the review before mine went over every possible point any user of this device could possibly think of.I am a casual user who is still in college and found this device to fit my needs very well. The multi media buttons, optional landscape view, and overall multimedia focus make this an ideal PDA for people who are going to use their device for entertainment purposes. I have been able to fit full movies onto 128 mb memory cards, so I always have something to look at in between classes, or on long trips.I have also been able to record most of this past semesters lectures (with permission of the professors of course!) using the amazingly clear nuilt in microphone. The prefect PDA
I preordered this pocket pc about 2 weeks ago and recieved it las week, and I am in love with it. I control my tv, dvd, audio reciever, and my HP zd7000 laptop with it, and can also chat in msn and surf the web (in landscape mode, it is MUCH better for web surfing) from my bed using wifi, and I can also connect it with my t-610 using blue tooth.The features on this PPC are great, and everything you need comes included. Great Concept, but OS and Battery Not There Yet
Well, let me begin by saying that I researched all of the PDAs on the market including Palm products and came away that this unit would be the best choice out there due to its 80211b connectivity. I primarily use Windows and as such though it would be a great tool to use to keep track of my contacts, Outlook messages, and to even sometimes use the IE browser capabilities remotely. After getting the unit, setting it up, and using it for several weeks I ended up returning it. Here's why, 1) The battery power is horrible if you use BlueTooth or the 80211b. I primarily wanted the unit to connect to my Outlook both at home and at work and I found the battery lifetime to be just short of two hours when using the 80211b (with BlueTooth turned off). This made it really tough to be able to attend a long meeting and rely on the 5455 for my email. Yes I could have carried optional battery packs, but I didn't want to do that. Great Design - Poor Implementation
This should have been the ideal PocketPC for me. With built-in Bluetooth and Wifi, it is a networking powerhouse without the need for sleds. Unfortunately, there appear to be severe production problems with this unit.I purchased one and had to return it due to frequent lockups. Sure, it's Windows - it crashes, but this was obscene. I booted between 7 and 20 times per day! I returned the unit assuming that I had a bad unit and the other one was the same way. Another collegue bought one and it went totally dark after two weeks. We are zero for three.The CompUSA store looked it up on the computer and noted 13 returns in 22 days. This unit is a disaster. HP 5400 Series not ready for prime time
While an attractive package with built in wireless (Blue Tooth, 802.11B), fingerprint recognition (for enhanced security and easy login), HP has in fact delivered a mess. The saga thus far: Upon delivery the unit was delivered with a stack of supplement manuals and addendums describing the add-on features, however there was no manual for the Pocket PC 2003 operating system. The manual is 160+ pages, and hidden on the CD as a PDF file (although my first round with tech support couldn't find it on the CD, and pointed me to the web site - where he couldn't find it either!) It was explained to me that the O/S is provided by a third party vendor (Microsoft), and therefore HP isn't responsible for it! Right... (Never mind that it is essential to the unit, and is useless without it!) Further, attempts to move the PDF to the iPAQ so it can be read with Adobe Acrobat Reader for the Pocket PC when needed proved useless. Top notch with room for improvements...
I replaced my Sony Clie with this machine for few different reasons. I wanted a longer battery life, better software, better screen, more memory, expandability and better accessory compatibility. And I got all that in Ipaq 5555. Battery lasts a long time and put many devices to shame. It is also user replaceable which allows you not only to use extended packs but if for any reason your power pack fails you can replace it on your own without sending your device for lengthy warranty service. So far PocketPC operating system has been stable to me and very easy and intuitive to use. Most of the software I got for it provides easy and painless installation. Erasing files and keeping everything organized is also very easy. For some reason Palm devices always have very little memory. 5555 comes with whooping 128 megs and with right memory card your options are unlimited. For example I use it with 256 SD card. Pretty nice unit if you're willing to pay.
If price was a factor, this might be a 3-star review. I'm reviewing it assuming price is not an issue and you are willing to pay for the model.Positives:* Comes with Pocket PC 2003 (Windows Mobile 2003), which has worked out some of the bugs of PPC2002, so I understand. Seems a pretty stable OS.* 128 MB is just the best (for now!). This is great if you love to install tons of stuff on the unit.* With the 48MB of ROM and the OS, there is about 17MB left over for Ipaq file store. Another bonus in space.* Wifi is nearly perfect. Picks up access points without a hitch. Only minor problem might be that it's "too" excited sometimes and forgets that a certain access point is no longer around, so you have to manually remove it from the list.* Internet apps pretty good: Pocket IE, Messenger, W Media* Also easily used 3rd party software to browse my network and play tunes off another computer.* Syncs over wifi. I would love the ipaqs if I could ever count on them to work. The 5555 is the third ipaq I have owned in the past three years (The company I work for gets them at a great discount, and I don't have to pay for them, which is why I keep getting them)First off, there are many things to love about this pda. The fingerprint recognition is really cool. It works perfectly for me, and I don't have to worry about remembering a password or having it stolen. The integrated bluetooth and 802.11b is an excellent add-on, and hasn't added to the bulk of the device at all. There is a large amount of built-in memory, the display looks beautiful, the battery is swappable, and there are a lot of nice applications built in.What disappoints me with every ipaq is the low reliability. It is so poor that I would never personally spend my own money on one of these devices.
