RIM Must Switch To Android Now, Before It's Too Late

  • Aug 20, 2010 from iamkhayyam(Khayyam) in Technology
iamkhayyam RIM's new BlackBerry 6 operating system and apps platform still isn't in the same league as its arch rivals, Apple's iPhone and Google's Android. So it's time for RIM to make a difficult, but important move: Stop... RIM's greatest assets are its email service but no one who buys BlackBerry products actually cares about the BlackBerry OS.

Owners of smartphones are being overwhelmed by the plethora of apps

  • May 12, 2011 from mediasight(MediaSight) in Technology
mediasight Buy an Android smartphone and you will be presented with more than 200,000 apps in the Android Market. With so many apps, it is now impossible for smartphone owners to wade through all the apps and see what ones would be the best for them.

TechCrunch | BlueStacks Releases App Player And Cloud Connect Service To Let You Run Android Apps On PCs

  • Oct 11, 2011 from naeemgujjar(Naeem)
naeemgujjar Back in May, BlueStacks raised $7.5 million in series A financing from Andreessen Horowitz, Ignition Ventures, Radar Partners, Redpoint Ventures, and more. This was all pre-launch. Why that kind of money for a startup that hasn't launched a product yet? Because there are north of 500 million PCs out there, and because BlueStacks has designed downloadable software that will enable Android apps to run on (hopefully) all of them.

And today BlueStacks is announcing the newest products in its quest to do just that. For starters, the company is making available the alpha version of its app player for Windows that is basically a free software download that gives users one-click access to Android apps on any Windows PC, tablet, or laptop. (And the ability to view these apps in full-screen.) BlueStacks hopes that this will be a boon for Windows developers, as the software will give them access to the some-billion-odd PC users without requiring them to modify their apps for those desktops and laptops.

Photo Exploration App Trover Comes to Android

  • Oct 10, 2011 from pulsewave(Brian Molidor)
pulsewave Trover, a free mobile app for exploring places through photos, has launched an Android version after a good start on iOS in July. The Seattle-based startup is focused on what it calls "spatial browsing." Trover is a photo-sharing app that arranges discoveries on a map, so that users can either explore sights right around them or browse places around the world. "Most of the apps out there today that are location-specific are delivering lists of content back to the user," says CEO Jason Karas. "We feel that exploring a space is not really done best through lists, that it's done...

Fast. Complicated. Eats megabytes for breakfast.

I've checked out what other reviewers have had to say about this phone, and find myself in agreement with most of them. The phone is amazing. Here's what else you need to know:a) data planb) appsc) user manualData Plan: you will need a separate data plan for the phone. My wife has an iPhone 3G, with an unlimited data plan from AT&T. But that phone doesn't use the 4G LTE network. AT&T is slowing building out its 4G LTE network, and it may not be available in your area. You have to buy a plan whether or not you currently have 4G LTE coverage. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that 4G LTE was available in my area, even though the official AT&T coverage map didn't include it.I bought a 200 megabyte per month plan. It seemed like a lot of bytes. Then I started using my phone. Trulia has a great app that lets you find the houses for sale in whatever neighborhood you find yourself in. Great Phone

This is a great phone, I have owned it for 3 days now and i really like it. The build quality is great, even though it is plastic. The phone itself looks beautiful and feels great, the weight is also good it doesn't feel to light or to heavy. The screen is one of the best ive seen on any phone. Everything cant be perfect though.I am not in a lte market so i cant comment on that aspect. As far as the phone goes you do have to keep a couple of things in mind. The phone has a 4.5 inch screen, although this sounds great it has some obvious draw backs. With the screen being so big one of the draw backs is size. It is not a comfortable phone to carry around and putting it in you're pocket as well as pulling it out can be awkward. I wear slim jeans and this has become an annoyance. When you talk on it you notice the size, it feels like holding a scientific calculator to you're ear.The second draw back is once again the screen size. This being 4.5 inches it takes up... 4/5 Eliseo Roman (Hawthorne, Ca) - See all my reviews, November 11, 2011

    Review for Samsung Skyrocket

I will start with the bad things first:Price: I initially bought it from Amazon wireless and they said it won't be delivered until December, so I canceled my order and went with ATT premier store and paid full price on the phone. It is like 70 dollars more.Battery: I took it off the charger at 9am today, right now it is almost 2pm and I am at 63%, I did used Google Navigation (while charging in the car). And mostly light browsing, power saving mode seems to help a lot, with 60 percent it can last me till the end of the day with almost 5% left. (Tested that yesterday) So battery life is not great but given it is an LTE phone with 4.5 inch screen, I would say this is 50/50.Accessories: Lack of accessories for now, you might want to get a good case for this considering it is a very delicate and expensive phone, you don't want to test the durability yourself. And no HD screen. & ATT customer service, ATT wouldn't give me the unlock code even... 4/5 Tech Gadget geek "gadget testing geek" (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket 4G Android Phone, Black (AT&T) (Wireless Phone) I will start with the bad things first:Price: I initially bought it from Amazon wireless and they said it won't be delivered until December, so I canceled my order and went with ATT premier store and paid full price on the phone. Not exactly as described...

This case is awesome. And even though you can see some of the Apple logo through the holes on the back, it's great. Love the retro cassette tape. However, part of their description is false. I had read previous reviews that stated that the case would need to be taken off to plug it into a charger, but their item info states: "Furthermore, all the openings for the dock connector, charger, side buttons, speaker, headphone jack, and camera were precisely cut to allow full access to all of the iPhone 4's functions."This item DOES NOT have an opening in the bottom for the dock connector/charger. It also DOES NOT have holes for the side volume buttons or the top "off" button, but that isn't a problem since they still function. If purchased, you will need to either pull off the bottom of the cover to charge the phone, or cut holes yourself, which is what I plan on doing. 3/5 Kate - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) It's cheap

It gets dirty from pocket lint, and it definitely didn't come with a whole for the charger. I received it as a gift from my girlfriend so i'll be using it. But the lack of a charger hole combined with the advertisement for it, makes me want to rate it very low. however, the ridiculously cheap price bumped me up to three stars. but i don't know if i can handle how dirty it is. :/ 3/5 Jordan Wright "Jordan" (Columbus) - See all my reviews This review is from: Silicone Cassette Tape Case / Skin / Cover for iPhone 4 (Wireless Phone Accessory) It gets dirty from pocket lint, and it definitely didn't come with a whole for the charger. Love it more than my iphone

Just love how fast and smooth this runs, I enjoyed my iphone 4s, but this is a better phone. The widgets and apps make it much more customizable than the iphone (for example, I love my swiftkey keyboard app; there is no way to use anything but the stock keyboard on the iphone). There are some apps that were better on the iphone, but the Droid has these and they are still useful. Glad I made the switch back to Android! 5/5 DU Ute - See all my reviews This review is from: Motorola DROID BIONIC 4G Android Phone, 16GB (Verizon Wireless) (Wireless Phone) Just love how fast and smooth this runs, I enjoyed my iphone 4s, but this is a better phone. 16 GB Bionic--Thunderbolt review

First I will start with the Droid Bionic 16GB. When I received the mobile at first I wasn't sure how I felt about the flimsy-er back cover and kind of hap-hazard installation area for the SIM card. But lets not make opinions without running the device, right? So after charging it fully and then powering it on first thing I notice is how quick it is, even for a 2.3 (we have a 3.0 (honeycomb) Toshiba Thrive tablet). After that I wanted to see the bloatware, which for the most part was not bad. There is a golf game that is pre-installed and the largest file, I think you can remove it but I haven't tried since it's kinda fun; when you are super board and want to play a i-don't-give-a-shite game. Some info: after all the preinstalled stuff from Verizon including Blockbuster and all the apps I installed (Facebook, Netflix, Google +, Lookout Mobile Lite, a better clock(must have), a better alarm (again must have), some live wallpapers, and a few other smaller miscalleaneous apps... 5/5 Z. beta product

I am a long time Motorola customer. I am sure I will buy Motorola in the future but this product line has me wondering. It is fast, feature rich, and accessory rich. But very buggy and frustrating. The handset it's self feels quality but the accessories slip in quality from the Droid x. They expanded the accessory line but they all feel cheaper and are not as stable (lots of force closes, lost pictures, spontaneous reboots etc.) The updates to the OS has helped allot but the Bionic is still a disappointment. I bought mine from Verizon along with the car dock, protection pack (that doesn't work with the device docks very good), Web top adaptor, multimedia dock. I am less than satisfied with every item in the line up. 3/5 Joseph Harer (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Motorola DROID BIONIC 4G Android Phone, 16GB (Verizon Wireless) (Wireless Phone) I am a long time Motorola customer. Not the pinnacle of new technology, but Android perfection (for now...)

There are phones with bigger screens (), faster CPUs and GPUs (), thinner profiles (), more memory and longer battery life, but the Galaxy Nexus (Verizon's LTE version) puts a respectable amount of everything together into one package, and leaves me practically nothing to complain about.IN SUMMARY: This may turn into one of my longer reviews, so in a nutshell: BIG, but comfortable to hold, though begs to be used with two hands. Best Verizon Phone Ever

Hardware & Form Factor:A lot of the reviews of the GSM version claimed that the phone felt big in people's hand and that some people had trouble with one-hand operations, however I don't see this to be the case. I have had no trouble using this phone in one hand. It fits comfortably in my hand, and the phone is incredibly light. While the RAZR might also be light, because it is slightly wider, it did not feel as comfortable in my hand. While this phone may not have the same high-end processor that is found in the HTC Rezound, the 1.2 GHz dual-core processor combined with Android 4.0 makes this thing lightning fast. (Update 1/17/12: My research has informed me that the processor in the device can actually clock up to 1.5GHz. You can get speeds higher than 1.2 GHz, but you must unlock your bootloader and flash a custom kernel. There are a few that overclock to 1.35 GHz since that is what has been found to be the highest speed that remains stable. Do this at your... 5/5 Timothy Swann - See all my reviews, December 17, 2011

Solid device crippled by certain issues

Ok so this is more of a 3.5. And mind you, this is going to be LEGIT because I've had this device for almost a month. What I like a lot about the phone:1) Size of screen - very easy to read!2) ICS - very clean interface and runs smooth, not necessarily super intuitive, but very functional! I wish I could say I love the task manager button.. but I forget about it often. Honestly any task killer will do the job, without you swiping stuff away a billion times.3) Internal storage of 30 GB - yes i know this is a negative for some people, but for me I like it. I had like 60+ apps and some music and two movies on my phone and still had about 25 gb left. So trust me folks, storage will not be an issue!4) Led notifier - yes I know other phones have this. but man, the LED light on this thing is BRIGHT. And I like how you can customize the colors. Fantastic. Download Lightflow.5) Real-time voice to text - just fantastic. love seeing the text appear... 3/5 N. Gu - See all my reviews, January 21, 2012

    Awesome Phone, Great Customer Service

I decided to switch from AT&T to Verizon after1) Becoming disillusioned with the quality (or lack there-of) of AT&T's network.2) Becoming fed up with the "walled garden" of the iPhone/iOS, and the poor performance of the iPhone 3GS in particular.3) Deciding to consolidate cell phone accounts with my partner, who has a Verizon phone.I did my research, and I decided that the Droid Razr met my criteria for speed, flexibility, expand-ability, not being an iPhone, and then the 4G totally sold me on the phone. While I would have like to have had Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box like the Nexus has, I know a software update will come in time. Anyways, I finally bit the bullet when I saw the phone on sale here on Amazon Wireless, so I grabbed it, and have used the savings to buy a dock on regular Amazon, plus an Otterbox case (which actually fits really well to the phone). The ordering process was pretty pain-free, though I had to "submit" my... 5/5 Brad Hopkins (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews, March 16, 2012

Incredible power in the palm of your hands

I have been using the Droid1 for three years now. I loved that phone, but it was getting heavy, slow, and clunky. So I did some investigating and bought this Razr.Let me tell you, I am not disappointed. On the 4G network, this thing is the fastest phone I've ever seen. The screen is beautiful, apps load instantly. The camera takes beautiful pictures and videos. And I've discovered the Tango app (which allows video calls between phones that have the app)...I've been having a blast with that.I have a laptop, desktop, iPad, and iPod but I find myself drawn to this phone instead of all the rest of my tech goodies.I was most worried about the keyboard because I loved the pull out keyboard on my Droid1 as I typed on it with my nails. However, after a day or so, I've gotten used to the on screen keyboard. The screen and keyboard keys are big enough that I don't usually hit the wrong key. Showing some love

I don't write reviews often. I have written them, several of them, I just don't do it often. When I saw the RAZR only had 2 reviews, I decided to show a little love!So I have had smart phones FOR-EVER... Starting with a Palm Treo 600 back in 2003-2004, maybe? After almost 10 years, I can't imagine going back to a regular phone. And I've had a physical keyboard all this time. I have nails, and if you type with your nails, a capacitative screen isn't going to do you much good! When Palm stopped making the Treos (they hadn't come out with the Pre or the Pixi yet) I clung to my 700, desperately hoping they would release something. Finally the phone was so old and ticky I had to give up and I switched to a Blackberry, which I loved almost immediately. Just a few months afterwards, Motorola released the original DROID. I was salivating, and kicking myself for not waiting just a bit longer! As soon as a year was up and I was eligible for an early... 4/5 Jennifer "Apple Girl in ATL" (Lilburn, GA, United States) - See all my reviews, March 20, 2012

My first smartphone was the Samsung Galaxy S (Captivate), then the Samsung Infuse, which was a faster, bigger Captivate, and now the SII Skyrocket, so you could say I've seen the evolution of Samsung's Android phones and software.Let me start by saying this is an awesome phone. Amazing, even. When I compare it to my 1 year old Samsung Infuse, it blows it out of the water in every respect (except the screen, which I'll get to later).UI - The UI on this phone is fantastic. I personally find Touchwiz to be a nice add on to Android. The notification bar switches are VERY useful, especially Wifi, rotation, and GPS. This phone has many added animations, which make everything look much smoother than stock Android. The new widgets like the Calendar and Photo Frame are very nice and add a lot to my home screens. The Phone/Messaging apps are some of the best I've seen. The camera is simpler than before, so easier to use. LOVE IT!!

I just got this phone yesterday. It is my first smartphone and I'm in love. It does everything and more that my 4th gen Ipod does (except has Android). Its super fast on the web and switching between applications. The camera seems good. The flash is blinding at night! Haven't played with the video yet. I love how you can speak almost every command instead of typing. You can write a whole text message with your voice! The GPS is great too. And with Boost, everything is included in your plan so you don't have to worry about data charges. The best thing for me though is being able to stream Pandor in my car! It's a great phone! Buy it :) 5/5 kcuse - See all my reviews This review is from: Samsung Transform Ultra Prepaid Android Phone (Boost Mobile) (Wireless Phone Accessory) I just got this phone yesterday. Best Android I've EVER Owned! (And LOVE the 'Shrinkage'!)

I'm new to the prepaid world, but not new to smartphones. For years now I've been buying & selling Android & Apple phones on eBay to avoid renewing my contract with other carriers, all so I could have the latest and greatest gadget in my pocket. Preparing to pull that stunt once more, I decided instead this time to give Boost Mobile a try, and chose the new Samsung Transform Ultra. My expectations for a cheap phone on a prepaid carrier were low.To my absolute surprise, the Transform Ultra has so far proven to be the BEST Android handset I've ever owned (and just to be clear, in my case that means it beats out the MyTouch 4G Slide, G2, Droid 2, Droid 2 Global and LG Revolution).I think the biggest difference must be the Gingerbread operating system, as the one thing this phone does not do (and ALL of the others did) is crash constantly. But aside from that, the Transform Ultra is also surprisingly smooth & snappy, not laggy and frustrating like all the other... 5/5 justinglen - See all my reviews This review is from: Samsung Transform Ultra Prepaid Android Phone (Boost Mobile) (Wireless Phone Accessory) I'm new to the prepaid world, but not new to smartphones. Can't beat FREE!!

Customer Video Review Length:: 0:30 MinsSo, it's not actually free as I needed to sign up for 2 more years of Verizon. But who cares, I needed to sign up with someone anyway...I'll just hit on a few pros/cons.Pros-MUSIC - I downloaded the Power Amp app and the resultant audio quality on this thing is amazing. I can safely pull the card out of my Sansa Fuze and drop it in the Stratosphere. I won't miss the Fuze (which had unbelievably good sound) a bit. This is the main reason I went with this phone. I no longer need to carry both a phone and MP3 player to the gym - don't cry Sansa; you served me well-Video playback is excellent as well.-The screen is beautiful.-The phone/dialer GUI is beautiful as well - so good in fact that Apple is suing Samsung because the Samsung overlay (over the Android OS) looks a little 'too' good (a copy of Apple's)-4G - LTE, this is noticeably faster for downloads than my wife's 3G Motorola Droid X 2... 4/5 Kfu Mike "Kfu" (Minneapolis, MN USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Samsung Stratosphere 4G Android Phone (Verizon Wireless) (Wireless Phone), November 16, 2011

Pros:Fantastic ScreenGood cameraGood build quality4GReally nice keyboardAndroid 2.3Cons:A bit on the chunky sideBattery life could be betterNo 1080P video recordingSummary:My wife and I recently ditched our OG Droids. She got a Droid Charge, and I got the Stratosphere. As far as:Speed, mine is as fast as hers.Software, mine has the advantage of Android 2.3.Screen, you can't tell a difference in image quality, but her screen is a little bigger (although hers is almost too big to manage with one hand).I'm really liking this phone so far. They keyboard is really nice (much nicer than on my Droid). Build quality is very good (although a little more plasticy than my Droid). The camera actually is pretty good. You're not going to get DSLR pictures out of it, but it's very servicable. The battery on the Stratosphere is bigger than on... 4/5 Snyderlover Smith "Willie T. Very Nice Phone

First of all I am not a master techie so this will not be a very technical review, so be forewarned:)For the past 4 years I have had 2 Blackberry Curve Smartphones. I love Verizon's service and I HAVE had other carriers over the years and none of them could hold a candle to Verizon.Just for information, I would never buy an iPhone even though they are now offered through Verizon. First of all, for many people it is a big status symbol and some people want to "impress" by having an iPhone and maybe originally the "apps" were great, but now you can get most any app you want without having to spend more just to get an iPhone. Secondly I also have a 2nd Generation Kindle and a new Kindle Fire. When I got the 2nd Generation Kindle mostly all books (not counting text books) were $9.99 or less. Until Steve Jobs of Apple wanted to put a big dent into Amazon's e-reader market, so he got together with the 5 major publishers and devised an "Agency Model" where the... 5/5 Nancy J. Great Battery Life/Pretty Good Phone too!!

I've been watching the HTC Thunderbolt 4G phone and finally gave up on it due to all the bugs and horrible battery life. So after reading several reviews on the Samsung Droid Charge, I decided to take the plunge. Here's how my first few days with the new phone went - the good and the bad. First some qualifiers - I live in the Maryland suburbs outside DC where there is 4G service. My previous phone was a Blackberry Storm 2 (touch screen - no physical keyboard). The first three things you notice are how big the phone is, how bright the screen is and how surprisingly light the phone is given its size. You should go to the Verizon store and check this phone out before you buy just to make sure you are comfortable with the size. The screen is as big as my Garmin screen! For me, it was a good thing. Web pages, email, maps, etc are generally easier to read.Day 1-I bought this phone midday on the Monday following its release. There was a software update that... 4/5 Todd "Todd" (Gaithersburg, MD) - See all my reviews This review is from: Samsung DROID CHARGE 4G Android Phone (Verizon Wireless) (Wireless Phone) I've been watching the HTC Thunderbolt 4G phone and finally gave up on it due to all the bugs and horrible battery life. An everyday users review

I have had it only a few days. So this quick review is based upon that. I am your typical user. I use it as a phone, email, text, FB etc.1. Build quality its nice and light feels good in the hands. I like the 4 physical buttons compared to capacitive touch buttons.2. The super amoled + screen is the best on any phone out there..... No comparison3. Using the phone I have no real issues with the Touchwiz interface. If coming from another phone you may not like it but its what you get used to. The phone is powered by a 1ghz hummingbird processor it works O.K. Sometimes the phone lags a bit. If anything that is my only complaint with the phone. Its not a deal breaker but when your pushing the limits of these processors for what you want the phone to do. You get the occasional hiccup. Of course this could be software related and it gets smoothed out in the future. Its really not that bad but something you notice once in a while.4... 4/5 rescueswimmer - See all my reviews This review is from: Samsung DROID CHARGE 4G Android Phone (Verizon Wireless) (Wireless Phone) I have had it only a few days. Great Phone despite some flaws

Overall the phone is a great 4G device, the screen is unmatched by any other vzw phone on the market today. It does have some flaws that makes you wonder who handles Samsung's QC.::Pluses::~Screen- Readable in all lighting, including sunlight. Text and Graphics are crisp~Keyboard- I found no problems typing on the included interface~Volume- Phone Ringer is very loud and easily heard in noisy environments~Camera- Takes solid pictures & has many options for taking the picture such as face detection, blink detection, etc~4G LTE- Service is very fast & generally runs above the advertised speeds of 6-12mb~LTE Switch- You can turn off the 4G radio when your not going to use it, saving battery life~Battery Life- Big improvement from the Thunderbolt, last for about a day with moderate use. If you remember to turn the 4G off when your not using it, it last even longer::Neutral::... 4/5 Josh "techman" (Long Island, NY USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Samsung DROID CHARGE 4G Android Phone (Verizon Wireless) (Wireless Phone) Overall the phone is a great 4G device, the screen is unmatched by any other vzw phone on the market today. Just to start, I've been a long time Sony Ericsson fan since the T68i, but this is my first Sony Ericsson Android phone. :)This is the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro MK16a in red which is compatible with all worldwide GSM bands but this one is high speed data compatible for US networks (3G HSDPA).Upon opening the box, you see the phone wrapped in some kind of cloth covering with protectors on each side of the phone. At the bottom of the box is the battery, USB cable and plug adapter. The top flap of the box holds the 3.5mm headphones with mic and all the written documentation associated with the mobile phone. The 8GB MicroSD Class 2 memory card was already inserted into the phone (this is how SE always include the memory card, so don't worry if you think that the phone has been tampered with). The phone is slightly thicker than most touchscreen phones, but I think it's pretty slim compared to other phones that has a sliding QWERTY keyboard, so this is... 4/5 Tracy N. - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great Phone for Android beginners

This is my first android phone, coming from Web OS, windows and other OS. After reviewing several phones with keyboard (I reply to email from the device so, keyboard was a required option) the MK16 was the best value for the money. If you are willing to spend 600 dollars on a phone, you can check Samsung Galaxy S2.Software is pretty freindly and intuitive. You will be able to find your way around the basic functions pretty fast: WiFi, Bluetooth, Internet navigation, etc. I use the phoen with 2 different SIMs, one for Mexico and one fo rthe US and it is transparent. Battery life is average: you can have a full day of charge with Data on (email sync), WiFi and Bluetooth. I get into the Market about 2 times a day and occasional browsing. So, if you carry a charger youc an do a higtly charge and you will be fine.Color is elegant, not flashy. nevertheless, you will get the attention for people around you so, be prepared to answer the 3 or 4 "must have" questions: "What brand is... 4/5 RAUL H MENDOZA DIAZ - See all my reviews This review is from: Sony Ericsson Xperia pro MK16a Unlocked Phone--U.S. Warranty (Red) (Wireless Phone Accessory) This is my first android phone, coming from Web OS, windows and other OS. True Smartphone

First of all, I should note I bought this phone directly from Amazon and although the delivery time was 3 to 5 working days, the phone came in a day and a half. I applaud Amazon for their timing and speed of delivery. This is my first smartphone and although I have not thoroughly examined, has an excellent performance, it is not too heavy or too large despite the availability of physical keyboard. The camera, excellent quality as we are accustomed to Sony. Compared to the Blackberry, no doubt the xperia wins at all; Blackberry will continue with his audience captive with its own messaging (BB Pin), but I guess not for long, thanks to new applications such as WhatsApp. Additionally, not least, the android OS is excellent, nothing to do with the OS on BB. In short, Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro is a great phone.Excuse me for my bad EnglishPrimero que nada, debo señalar que adquirí este teléfono directamente de la tienda Amazon y aunque... 5/5 Jose Pardo - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
