Implementation guide for VMware and Microsoft Virtual server

This book provides a thorough (742 pages) implementation guide on VMware ESX, GSX and Microsoft Virtual server. This would help implementers/consultants tasked with implementing virtual servers within a datacenter. The authors are implementation experts and are upfront about the fact that this book will cover only the above 3 popular server virtualization products. This book covers how a bare metal or OS (Windows/Linux) based server can be carved up into logical servers. It doesn't defocus or attempt to look into alternative approaches that involve virtualizing I/O in addition to the server itself. I give it a 4 as it seems a bit on the wordy side and could have been presented in a more compact and succint manner. All in all a good book on an interesting topic. 4/5 R. Comprehensive, Technical and Business, Basic to Advanced, VIRTUALIZATION Practical Knowledge

One of the most outstanding books ever! This book starts by excellent teaching of fundaments (In Chapters 1 to 3) by comparing Virtualization to Simulation and Emulation and demystifying it. An easy to understand and clear history - going back to IBM 360, Physical and Logical Partitioning and OS issues and concepts are discussed to clarify and explain. It also clearly, and very honestly, points out where Virtualization can, and where it can NOT be a solution.Chapters 4 to 7 do a superb, professional job of covering best practices for Business Case, Planning, Budgets, Deployment, Price, Usage Scenarios, and specifications. I read this part wearing both my business and technical hats. I was impressed in both ways.Chapters 8 to 12 focus on Microsoft Virtual Server Platform, Installation, Configuration, and Advanced Topics. Chapters 13 to 17 do the same for VMware ESX. Then in Chapters 18 to 22 a greater detailed focus is on Implementation and... 5/5 Bruce B. Razban (Silicon Valley, California) - See all my reviews, October 3, 2007

Wisdom is Wordy but still Worth It!

I've worked with Virtual everything for a number of years and have collected a lot of resources on Virtualisation. Simply: This is likely to be voted the best and most complete to date. It is a little pricey but will save on your time to find knowledge elsewhere and could pay for itself in that respect. If you want nearly all the answers, buy a book like this one where the authors try to ask all the right questions. If you want to be an expert, learn from experts. Buy this book.I dropped it to four stars because of price and it probably has too much content which might have pushed back the date it would otherwise be published. Even with all this content, it still manages to miss some important and current virtualisation trends and topics. Nonetheless, it is still the best resource on this subject at this time. 4/5 Marko Cruise "Aussie MCSE" (Melbourne, Australia) - See all my reviews, November 14, 2007

Great Book for both new and seasoned Exchange admins

Jim McBee has done it again by writing an amazing book on Exchange 2003 administration. That was kind of a generic statement, right? I will dive into it in a bit...promise.I own a small library of Exchange books, accumulated over 12 years supporting Exchange, and around 15 in the IT biz. If there was one Exchange 2003 book that I had to put on my shelf, this would be it. Many of the principles that Jim goes over may be easily applied to Exchange 2000.Diving into the "amazing book" stuff a bit further...Essentially this book bridges the gap between the printed architectural and design books and answers the question "What do I need to know in order to run my day to day operations?" as well as "What can I do to troubleshoot my environment and make it better?"Many admins are plagued with not having a single book which delves deep into the guts of administering their Exchange 2003 servers and improving their environment. Great resource for the professional on the field!

Firstly I'd like to say hello to Jim, I had the pleasure of attending a personal workshop by the man himself in KL for Exchange 2000...since then I've been a true follower of his books!Ok lets get down to this book...it's been well written from start to end with concise information from the field, I've used a lot of his advice during my design and deployment phases. It also provides great information if you are venturing deeper into the world of Exchange...so I'll say this book is for Intermediate to professional. A must have for Consultants planning on designing, deploying and migrating to Exchange 2003.Overall it's a great book to carry around as a reference. Once again Jim...great book...can't wait for the Exchange 2007 copy!! 5/5 Keshminder Singh "Kesh" (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) - See all my reviews, August 19, 2006

    A Fine Resource

This is a fine resource for ASP.NET developers who want to build high performance, data-driven Web applications with a richer user interface. The introduction of ASP.NET AJAX 2.0 extensions caught many of us off-guard. We were suddenly thrown into intensive JavaScript programming on a Microsoft platform. Faced with a major learning curve, many of us fled to the convenience of the UpdatePanel control as a stepping stone. There's no getting around it, it's going to take effort to get to the next level of AJAX capabilities using Microsoft's library. This book takes you into that journey - but not necessarily by the most direct route. The first third of the book feels more like a solid ASP.NET AJAX reference than a "how-to-do-it" tutorial. The early chapters cover the library's types, namespaces, and classes in depth. It just seemed too early and too dry to be dealing with the nitty-gritty of the platform. In my view, the book should start at Chapter Five... 4/5 K. Cox - See all my reviews, October 2, 2008

Great primer on MS AJAX framework and Javascript

I found this book as very resource full and requires a serious and focussed read. I have a good ASP.NET 2.0 server development experience and little or basic experience on the client scripting and AJAX. I wanted to learn this piece of web development and being a professional I picked up this book even though the title says 'Advanced' only because the advanced and pro series books generally tend to have more technical details that are needed in a real project and have more serious material.I have tried most of the example code and took my own time learning the details before moving forward to a new concept. The authors really know their subject very well. The topics were well paced and well structured. I suggest reading the book thorougly and not to skim the material. The book also features a great chapter on JavaScript. All in all, a worthy buy for serious learners. 5/5 N. Venkata "TechTalkToe" (VA, USA) - See all my reviews, February 17, 2009

Not for the faint of heart :)

I would classify this book as a hardcore, deeply technical look at JavaScript, AJAX, and the Atlas farmework (I am only a few chapters in :) )The first few chapters I have read so far covered JavaScript more in depth then I think anyone human should ever go with JavaScript but there were some interesting nuances that I didn't previously know about. I haven't got into the meat of the AJAX stuff yet but if the first few chapters are any indication of the depth, this book will be on the "hardcore" level. 5/5 Bradley Cunningham (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews, August 5, 2008

    Tech Target

One of the best technical books I've ever read...

... and I've read quite a few of those! I bought the book after running Terminal Server 2003 for a while, and immediately discovered better ways to implement printing and user profiles (flex profiles seem to be exactly what we needed). Explanation of licensing was also very useful. What I like most:- very concise and accurate presentation, often with flow diagrams;- whenever there're several methods to do something, authors always discuss advantages and disadvantages of each method;- real-life examples;- references to low-cost or free third-party tools;- good style and occasional humor!I would highly recommend this book to specialists designing and implementing Terminal Services on Windows 2003 Server. 5/5 0, June 11, 2004

    Another great book.

Another great book from Brian. I have both of his MetaFrame XP books and this fits right into the collection. I dont use straight Terminal Server for many servers but this book seems to be able to help with both my Citrix environment and TS environment. Easy to read, good flow, doesn't sound like some boring, preachy lecture. 5/5 0, June 10, 2004

    Brian and Ron Shine Through

I've been a fan of Brian's books for a while. I bought this book cause a customer of ours was thinking about ditching Citrix and going pure TS, and I wanted to see how realistic that was. It turns out there's a lot more you can do with Terminal Server than I thought!Like Brian's other books, this one is well laid-out, methodical, and covers everything you need to know. I highly recommend it! 5/5 0, June 7, 2004

    This book saved me days!

MS SQL Server Reporting tools do not easily allow you to create "horizontal" reports--where the next item to be reported appears to the right, rather than below. I needed to create such a report. And I couldn't figure out how to do so until I found the example titled "Horizontal Reports" in this book. I literally tried for days to find a solution on my own without success. Did I have to work around some of the directions in the book? Yes. But I note also that there's an on-line forum where concerns and frustrations are being answered. And many of the recipes reference an online entry that inspired the article. I'll be recommending this book to my colleagues, since MS SQL Server Reporting tools are our corporate standard. (Note--I don't know the authors, I'm not related to any of them, and I don't work for any of the companies involved.) 4/5 Michael J. This book is excellent for someone like myself, looking to grow basic to intermediate Reporting Services skills. There are a lot of resources out there which point at advanced features/functionality of the product, but few approach the material from a practical and real-world example-driven approach like this one. Good for advanced beginner or journeyman level

If you are an advanced PB programmer you will not find much here unless you have been stuck in versions 6.5 (or maybe even 7 but less so) and earlier. The authors give a reasonable overview of the new IDE and source control integration. There is also discussion of the newer features such as Powerbuilder Native Interface, XML datawindows, command line deployment, and error handling. Over 200 pages are devoted to database connectivity which may be of interest if you support multiple platforms.Aside from some minor factual errors and the occasional typo, the information and examples are concise and to the point (although many leave out even rudimentary error checking which is vital in any 'real' application).I bought the book since there haven't been any 'real' PB books since version 7 and this one details the new IDE. 3/5 M. Shallow to a fault

One of the problems with a lot of computer books these days is that they try to cover a wide range of topics without _really_ delving into anything. This is one such book. It will tell you what a stored procedure is, how to code it, what some of the syntax is - the basics - without really going into the details. In other words, you won't learn anything from this book that you couldn't learn on your own in an afternoon with the Books Online and Query Analyzer. The SQL presented in this book is neither advanced nor SQL Server 2K specific, and I think you'd be wasting your money to buy it. 2/5 "sql3642" (Canada) - See all my reviews This review is from: Advanced Transact-SQL for SQL Server 2000 (Paperback) I have been writing SQL for a few years, and I have almost every book on TSQL.

Of course the reviews are good if you pay people to rate your book

This author appears to be paying people to write glowing reviews of his works. Take a look at some of the reviews for his other works. Before purchasing this book I'd recommend checking out reviews on other sites. 5/5 J. Pruitt "FTW" (DJ booth) - See all my reviews, July 17, 2008
