Very good pro level DAW, Documentation needs improvement

Cubase 5 provides a feature rich environment to do just about anything you need to do in audio/MIDI recording on a professional or advanced hobbyist level. It is compatible with just about every type of plugin on the market and comes with a good assortment of quality VST instruments and effects to get you started. It works well on Windows machines (I've used it on XP Pro 32 bit and Windows 7 Pro 64 bit) using ASIO drivers (no latency issues at all). From my discussions with other users, it works as well if not better on Apple based computers too. It is adequate for mastering, but if you are really serious, you may need another tool for that (but not necessarily). As far as the features etc go, it rates a four or five out of five. However documentation and support only rate maybe a two or even a one. The help system does not even rate that well. However, I believe that a lot of software houses related to the music industry are quite poor in this area as well. Fantastic piece of software

This is the most capable DAW on the market, and I have extensively tried Ableton, Sonar and many others. Cubase5

Great product with some fantastic plugins and thankfully it works very similar to SX3 no great learning curve there...However, Installing and getting it operational was a nightmare (installed on WinXP(64) the LCC software protection was shocking to install and kept crashing. And I searched for DAYS on online forums to find info on the various errors that came up when it failed to install.BIG RECOMMENDATION FOLKS... find ALL the necessary windows updates FIRST!!!Esp the windows media updates.Search the web by typing in the error code and DON'T GIVE UP.Cubase5 is a great program and even better on a 64bit OS because of the extended memory use (in our case 8Gb)There is No mastering suite in Cubase5... I'm still researching that.the Steinberg Forums worked but were equally as frustrating to use because they kept on rejecting my logins..NOT GOOD FOR A NEW CUSTOMER!!!!!!!IT ALL SOUNDS A BIT... 2/5 B. Made my life a lot easier

I'd been a Sonar/cakewalk user for about 8 years now. when I last updated to Sonar X1, I was so displeased with the stability and overall "unpolishedness" of everything... So I started researching other DAWs and found Cubase 6. I was so impressed with its new features I went ahead and bought it without even trying it, could've been a ridiculously stupid thing to do, but in a day, I was already fluent with it. It does everything Sonar does even better, Cubase looks and feels more polished, it offers deeper customization and control over your audio at your finger tips. The only thing I still miss about Sonar is its drum maps, other than few remaining collaborate works, I'll pretty much uninstall sonar. I'm certainly pleased with Cubase stability, no more blue screens at crucial times.Do yourself a favor and at least try Cubase 6. 5/5 m Cristina Carvalho - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Phenomenal software!

I started with Cubase SX, upgraded to Cubase 4 and recently upgraded to Cubase 6. First of all every DAW software has a steep leaning curve mostly because of the immense features. I can say that Cubase 6 is dirt cheap from the perspective of what you get. 5 years ago a drum loop library would have cost as much as just the CB software, same goes for the convolution reverb. Now its included along with a very valuable tutorial DVD. Steinberg has made a greater effort to provide assistance to the user via youtube, Cubase club and blogs provided for free. The basic functions are very easy to setup and use, but it must be noted that you will have to learn the more advance features, that are much more user friendly than before. The pitch correct, convolution reverb, variaudio (edit audio like midi files), drum loops, Halion SE ( realistic keyboard sounds ) and the Amp rack (as good as amplitube imo) are all super high quality and now included and eliminate the need for pricey plug-ins that... 5/5 tely "jetzoom" (LA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Steinberg Cubase 6 Retail Multitrack Recording Software (CD-ROM) I started with Cubase SX, upgraded to Cubase 4 and recently upgraded to Cubase 6. Not what I was looking for

I've been a Cubase user through several generations of the software and had never looked through any books beyond the manuals. This seems to have been the first Cubase 5 book to come out, so I thought I'd buy a book to help me learn some things about the new version. This book isn't terrible, and some people may like it. It has 17 chapters that cover various areas of Cubase such as Automation, Midi Recording, The Score Editor, and the Mixer. The greater majority of the chapters are less than 10 pages long. Within the chapters you find "tips." They don't seem to be presented in any organized order. The tips are alright. As you would probably guess, if you have used Cubase for awhile, you already know a fair number of the tips, you don't care at all about many of the others, and there are a few that will surprise you. I've learned a few things that I never realized that will prove helpful, but the organization of this book did nothing to help me find them. Simple, cheap, exactly what I needed

Upon moving my music/recording software to a new computer I needed to transfer the license for three Arturia classic synthesizers. This is exactly the gizmo I needed, and was the lowest-priced I could find. All other options I was finding had tons of "features" and whatnot that I didn't need, and cost nearly three times as much. Five minutes after opening the box I had the licenses transferred and software working on the new computer. 5/5 Christopher Orth - See all my reviews, October 23, 2011

Looks different from the image, works the same.

For those that are wondering, you aren't getting the exact case shown in the cover image. You're getting a white colored box with the product inside. It works the same so don't be worried if you seemingly get a different product.Plugged it in, was able to transfer licenses fine. Versatile and powerful

After evaluating Pro Tools, Ableton, Reaper, Studio One, and Cubase for a month, I settled on Cubase. I had used Pro Tools M-Powered in the past, and Cubase took a lot of relearning to figure out where all the functionality was. But it is there. In fact, it supports pretty complex workflows. VST plugins are plentiful, and performance is great (on a laptop, no less). I usually have @20 tracks each with 1-3 inserts, and 2-3 FX tracks as well; haven't had any processing problems. My only complaints, so far, is that the user interaction scheme is a little non-standard; for example, right-clicking usually does not show a context menu as you would expect. But the manual is written very very well, and makes learning the system much easier. I am now converted to Cubase. 4/5 X - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Cubase step by step

Like most dummy books, this one takes you through the very very basic terminology and moves forward from there. I found it useful in introducing one concept at a time. The author makes clear that this is not a book for people who are aiming to open their own studio but rather for musicians who want to record themselves and maybe their bands. I have Cubase LE (the most basic version) which is packaged with the interface hardware I bought. Does the job OK. 4/5 Robert Deigh - See all my reviews, May 23, 2007

    excellent book for hobbyists.

I've recorded on 4 track cassette to hard disc recorders and was intimidated to jump into PC recording. This book is excellent. Cubase (even LE like I own) is so feature rich that one could spend a day just scrolling through the in program user manual (576 pages). This book cuts to the chase telling you about mic and room selection all the way to a final mastered project. If you are new to Cubase, do not hesitate to buy this book. 5/5 D. Kaley (spokane, WA United States) - See all my reviews, November 25, 2007

Very good coverage of the basics

This is a very good guide to getting started with Cubase. I bought an Alesis USB 8 came with a copy of Cubase LE but no hard copy manual, just a 587 page PDF document. The PDF manual is good for looking up specifics but not well suited to getttng a quick overview. The Idiot's Guide is based on the full blown versions of Cubase so a few things are different in LE but it gives me a good idea on where to look in the PDF manual. This isn't for the 'power user' but covers most everything needed for basic home recording. 5/5 Al C.
