    Great new features

I love the fact that you can now use Pro Tools with your own interface hardware, instead of having to buy Avid's stuff. I'm sure Avid's Pro Tools HD system is awesome, but I've been using MOTU gear for years, and didn't want to have to invest in another set of hardware just to use their software... And by the way, it's working great!! So thanks Avid! 5/5 GeneS - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Compared to other DAWS, it is the leader by far

I have had and used Pro Tools 8, 9, and now 10. I have used and owned Cubase 5, Propellerhead Reason 3, 4 and Record 1, Reaper, and others. Pro Tools does indeed shine far above the others, especially over Steinberg Cubase in sound quality and available support effects and instruments, really the difference is professional compared to toys. (I have not used Abelton or the Mac DAWS). Pro Tools is very useful once you learn some of the major keystrokes you'll be using over and over, it actually becomes intuitive with useage. I bought the Instrument Expansion Pack and have enjoyed the professional quality of all of the instruments and their ease of use. Pro Tools 10 however is very pricey to upgrade, plus it is only an entry level 64 bit application at present, only a few of the effects are 64 bit, but of course the core audio engine of the DAW is still 32 bit, however the program "only" runs on a Windows 7 system, 32 or 64 bit. In the future it will probably be a 64 bit system only. So... 4/5 CB1 - See all my reviews This review is from: Pro Tools 10- Professional audio recording and music creation software (Electronics) I have had and used Pro Tools 8, 9, and now 10. A beginner's studio.

I bought this so I could record my guitar playing on my computer and use the included Pro Tools software to create backing tracks to play to, and for my needs it has performed well. The audio interface really is high quality, and it is useful no matter what kind of audio software you like to use. I like the Pro Tools M-Powered Essential software as well, with the included virtual instruments and loops I can create quality backing tracks for my guitar playing. Buy this, a dynamic mic for vocals and a midi keyboard for the Virtual Instruments and your home studio will be good to go.P.S.here is a great Midi Keyboard: 5/5 Isiah S. Entry Level, but good quality

I just bought this as a way to get my feet wet and begin to learn Pro Tools. There are probably easier to learn DAWs out there than Pro Tools, but I like the fact that studios use Pro Tools and two others in my band have Pro Tools home recording systems. I also like the fact that Pro Tools models the functions of a real studio mixer rather than trying to invent their own paradigm. One word of warning: for home recording you will want the best quality condenser mic you can afford. Condenser mics pretty much always require phantom power and this M-audio box, being pretty entry level, does not support that. You can either use a lesser mic that does not require phantom power, or you can go out and find some kind of direct box that will give the mic power from your A/C socket in the wall, but you won't be able to just plug-and-go with a good condenser mic. I haven't sorted this problem out yet so I can't advise. Also, I have tried recording direct in from guitar... 4/5 Guitar Johnny "Guitar Johnny" (Florida) - See all my reviews This review is from: Pro Tools Make Music Now Recording Studio (Software) I just bought this as a way to get my feet wet and begin to learn Pro Tools. Full featured "prosumer" music production at a reasonable price

Pro Tools MP 9 is a very nice full featured music production suite aimed at the "prosumer" market. It has limits but they are set high enough that they would be unlikely to impede any home-recording musician, even those with much more ambitious use cases than simple voice and acoustic guitar arrangements. Pro Tools MP 9 allows for tons of audio and MIDI tracks and allows for a large amount of effects per track; if you count post-fader inserts and sends your signal chain possibilities are limited only by your processor. Because Pro Tools MP is for off-the-shelf M-Audio hardware it does all of its work in software without a hardware DSP to off-load to. However, if you've been working with other music production suites you are likely used to this; that's how everyone else does it at the hobbyist/prosumer level. Unlike other solutions though there's a clear growth path for dedicated DSP hardware with Pro Tools if you do out-grow MP. That's a pretty cool feature.Pro Tools MP 9... 4/5 Adam Drew - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Pass over this one

This program has some really nice features, (most of which are overkill for a home setup) but it just constantly crashes. My machine meets and beats the requirements for the program but it still constantly crashes. Also, it doesn't play very nice with a lot of the plugins that I have which have worked fine in my other DAWs. 2/5 N. Kratzmeyer (Texas, USA) - See all my reviews, March 3, 2012

    Hums with phantom power on

Well, at first I thought it was my mike cord. $40 later I realized it was the phantom power.I actually got a couple of vocals done the other day; they came out pretty well and I was happy with the box. The first setup gave a hum so I swapped cords and everything was fine. Ordered a new Monster XLR cord and the hum was back. So I went to the cord I'd used successfully. . .and now it's humming. I was using an AT-4040 condenser mike. Grabbed the nearest mike handy--a Shure Beta57A--and got no hum. Also swapped headsets and jiggled the USB cord (not that that makes any sense). It's got to be the phantom power supply in the Avid Recording Studio itself.I did the above using Garage Band on a Mac Book Pro. The Avid Recording Studio comes with a free version of ProTools, so I gave it a try. Same story. Nasty hum using the condenser mike and phantom power; OK with dynamic mike. I couldn't get either Garage Band or Pro Tools to record an electic guitar. I... 1/5 F. J. Rodrick (San Diego) - See all my reviews, January 21, 2011

Great first step into the recording biz / process ....

The installation is quick and simple. For me it was easy, having used several other audio editing systems including some basic training on an advanced Pro-Tools system. Avid and Pro-Tools are the industries go to production choices, using the Avid Recording Studio is a great way for a newbie to learn the basic audio skills of recording. The equipment is pretty much plastic, light weight and feels sort of sturdy. I would recommend it for someone eager to learn the basics of audio recording and editing. The interface is a simpler version of a full professional studio, and has the capacity for adding advanced software. Anyone looking for a future in the recording industry or just wanting to record their own music or sounds for fun should check this out. One recommendation: follow the instructions exactly, do not mix it with other systems and have a great time. 4/5 microeconomics - See all my reviews This review is from: Avid Recording Studio (Electronics) Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?) Great mini sound studio for the beginning/intermediate artist.

My first thought was, "I wonder if Avid makes an upgrade to this set that includes Pro Tools M-Powered bundled with M-Audio Fast Track Pro"? This is indeed the basic version. But how basic is it? I would say this is almost perfect for anyone wanting to start mixing their own tracks with their own instruments and prerecorded loops. Basic for a purpose. The M-audio Fast Track functions as an external soundcard and 'router' for all of your music gear. When you plug in the M-Audio, all the audio from your computer immediately goes through the Fast Track--it processes the sound from then on out, which is a good thing (I would wager that the M-Audio soundboard is better than your laptop's). The Fast Track is the entry level audio interface that M-Audio offers which is bundled with Avid Pro Tools SE (second only to Pro Tools M-Powered) that allows the price to be very attractive for first time music editors (for your own music, or someone else's). This is why the M-Audio is... 4/5 Canis Majoris - See all my reviews, June 23, 2011

    Better than the original

This iLok is a significant improvement over the original version. While the first generation iLoks could only store about 115 licenses, the new iLok can store somewhere around 500. The blue LED gives it a modern feel; I didn't find it especially distracting. The iLok has a clear cover in the middle that snaps off and allows you to label the iLok. The size is noticeably smaller than the original version and no longer blocks any adjacent USB ports. Two minor issues. First, the protective cap does not attach to the iLok when the device is in use. If you remove the cap, make sure you remember where you placed it. The second possible issue is that if you do not download the current version of both the drivers and client tools, it won't recognize the iLok correctly. This means that it will display like an original iLok with the reduced license count. If you aren't able to add your licenses, make sure you install the latest drivers and restart your computer. 5/5 Kenneth R. Muse (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews, June 25, 2011

One of the Good Ones ~ A Wet Read

There are many books out on Pro Tools 9 and due to the complexity of the DAW software there are many approaches to using it. So my recommendation is to get as many different good books on the subject as possible. Only by looking at it through several different engineers eyes will you get a comprehensive education of the potential of this incredible application. I started out with which although it is beneficial to a beginner and is "the" AVID training course step 1, I found it to be a dry read, notwithstanding a great resource of information; so I am not damning the book.I also have ... 5/5 Bob Feeser "MillCrafters.com" (Springfield, PA USA) - See all my reviews, July 20, 2011

This is the second Pro Tools MP version I have bought. The most recent purchase of the MP PT package was about half the price of the first which was great. If your the one on the other side of the glass recording, say a band or any artist, then Pro Tools is the perfect all in one app. For myself I am more of a solo artist creating beats and instrumentals. Personally I prefer Logic over Pro Tools for this because the ease of use but still, Pro Tools can deliver. It all depends on how you want your workflow to be. I recommend purchasing the pro tools 9 text book if you have never touched the program before. Once you get a hang of the keyboard shortcuts, you'll be producing in no time. 5/5 omletie - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Horrible on PC - AVID customer service non existent

Can't use it for a half an hour without some technical issue. Worse customer service is nonexistent. Mac users report less problems but just do a google search with keywords like "Windows" "Pro Tools 9" "restart" "not recognized" etc. You'll find forums full of complaints but no solutions or workarounds. And,,,, because its software,,, no refunds even though they say its compatible with many systems as was mine supposedly. For PC Cubase has been very reliable as well as earlier versions of Sonar. If you love fixing up your home or remodeling or making repairs or are a do it yourself person - or hate it - or someone is always giving you a "to do list" and asking you to get your tool belt and tools because you are the repairman or do maintenance work - you’ll love this funny design. Of course, this design is great for the man in business or works for a company, too. Unique item for any fixer-upper, carpenter, plumber, jack of all trades.
