Choosing and Using Audio and Music Software, A Guide to the Major Software Packages for Mac and PC

Creator: Mike Collins | Music - 2004-04-08

The guide offers authoritative information and comparison between the systems currently available to help inform your own decisions.

Publisher: Focal Press

About this book
This comprehensive reference features all the major audio software: SONAR XL; Cubase SX; Logic Audio Platinum; Digital Performer; Nuendo; Pro Tools; Peak; Spark XL; SonicWorx; Audition (Cool Edit Pro); WaveLab; Sound Forge. If you need advice on which systems to purchase, which are most suitable for particular projects, and on moving between platforms mid-project, this book should be your one-stop reference. Mike Collins is a trainer and consultant who has been tackling these issues for years and his expert advice will save you time and money. Each section covers a specific system, providing a handy overview of its key features and benefits, including help with setup. "Hints" and "Tips" appear throughout these sections, addressing issues such as how to record drum loops using a virtual drum-machine, recording basslines and keyboard pads using virtual synthesizers, and adding strings, brass or other instruments using virtual samplers. Mike then illustrates how to convert these MIDI recordings into audio tracks to mix alongside vocals, guitars and any other real instruments. The many short tutorials provide both a source of comparison and means to get up to speed fast on any given software.Mike Collins is a music technology consultant and writer who has been making music in London's recording studios variously as a MIDI programmer, session musician, recording engineer, producer and arranger since 1981. He offers freelance Pro Tools engineering, consultancy, troubleshooting and personal tuition, as well as presenting seminars and lectures on related music technology and audio recording topics. Mike has written over 500 articles for magazines such as Macworld (UK), Pro Sound News Europe, Sound on Sound and AudioMedia, and for Electronic Musician and MIX in the USA.Mike's wide-ranging career and experience enables him to bring excellent insight from all sides into his writing, from technical detail to creative expression. Starting out as a musician and club DJ in the 1970's, Mike moved into professional recording in the 1980's, initially as a Songwriter/Producer for EMI Records. Later he worked as a Songwriter for Chappell Music; as a Film Sound Consultant for Dolby Labs; as a Music Producer for TV recordings; and as Senior Recording Engineer and Music Technology Specialist at Yamaha's London R & D Studio. Throughout the 1990's Mike worked as a MIDI Programmer on records, films and music tours with bands such as the Shamen and film composers such as Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Arnold. Mike was Executive Consultant to Re-Pro (The Guild of Record Producers and Engineers) between 1996 and 1999 and Technical Consultant to the Music Producers Guild (MPG), contributing to the Education Group and organising and presenting Technical Seminars between 1999 and 2002. He has a BSc in Electroacoustics and an MSc in Music Information Technology.* A unique, colour-illustrated source of comparison between rival systems to help you determine future purchases or upgrades* Packed with tutorials and no-nonsense advice including help with moving your projects more easily from one system to another* Written by an experienced specialist who has spent many hours comparing the products available - so you don't have to!

Building strong music programs, a handbook for preservice and novice music teachers

Creator: Charlene Ryan, MENC, the National Association for Music Education (U.S.) | Music - 2009-05-28

From student trips to music software to district ensembles to advocacy to entry-level instrumental courses, Ryan covers it all in this comprehensive handbook.

Publisher: R&L Education

About this book
Building Strong Music Programs uniquely focuses on music programs in the public school community, providing strategies and tools for developing a vibrant music program and building community support. Covering relationships with colleagues, parents, staff, administrators, and the community at large, Charlene Ryan also provides tactics for developing courses, performances, and publicity to enhance your program. Build a repertoire of tried-and-true strategies covering curriculum, classroom management, special needs, concerts, assessment, budget, and more that are based on years of teaching at all levels. While program building is an essential, time-consuming part of every music teacher's job, students are rarely prepared for it. The questions for discussion and student assignments make this an excellent choice for preservice teacher training courses. Ryan covers issues important to student teachers, new teachers, teachers changing schools, and teachers looking to rejuvenate their existing programs. From student trips to music software to district ensembles to advocacy to entry-level instrumental courses, Ryan covers it all in this comprehensive handbook.

    Only for older computers!

I purchased this for my 3rd grade daughter to help her with spelling. I received the software and could not install it on either my MacBook or our desktop PC - our computers were too new. What a letdown!

I bought this program with high hopes because it looked great and my son couldn't wait to play it. When I tried to install it, it wouldn't recognize our computer's sound card and wouldn't play. Finding technical support for this product is impossible. Don't take the risk. 1/5 Melanie R. Gibson - See all my reviews, December 15, 2008

Ok so I was really excited to get this game for my daughter. When I loaded it to my pc it asked for her date of birth, but it stopped in 2000. She was born in 2009. This game is very out dated and she was not impressed by it at all. I do not recommend this to anyone. 1/5 shortyv380 - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Game is OK

My son is 3 and loves to play on the computer, I thought this game would be good for him. Turns out he prefers a website he has been using to learn his ABC's and 123's. I was worth a shot I guess. The game graphics are good I guess he just was not interested. 3/5 B. STEIN "Mommy" (oregon) - See all my reviews, February 5, 2011

    It was Ok

I got this for my 3 year old son and he loved it at first. The first few days he would sit there for an hour and "play" his game. After that he had quickly mastered all the activities and it got boring. I wish there more activities for him to do with it but that's where it is significantly lacking. 3/5 Sarah - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I LOVE this video!!!

Mark Baxter is by far one of the greatest vocal coaches on the planet. The Singer's Toolbox goes hand in hand with Mark's book "The Rock-N-Roll Singer's Survival Manual" which is a book that I referred to frequently growing up a singer. With clients from bands such as Journey and Aerosmith, it's safe to say this guy knows what he is talking about!. The Toolbox is a no-nonsense, to the point, fun instructional video that covers the ground basics that every singer both new and pro should know. His knowledge of vocal health has always been amazing and if you follow the guidelines of this video, you won't go wrong and your voice will be stronger than ever! 5/5 Jaime Vendera "Producer of Kindle books for 7... Just OK - Might be worth 10 bucks max.

There really isn't much here related to singing, the content is mainly concerned with keeping your voice in shape physically and stressing the importance of warming up and such. One negative on the format is there are 2 chapters with several lessons each. From what I can see there is no way to play them in a continuous manner. The lesson ends and the DVD returns to the menu so you have to navigate to the lesson you want and press "Play" again. As some of the lessons are very short this gets pretty annoying. 3/5 Drive-In Kid - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Not Too Necesary

I'm going to give this maybe 4 stars only because I think this guy is awesome, but this video is non-essential. If you can get it cheap, then go ahead. However, this DVD (although I got the VHS version) doesn't really help out too much. It's formatted with some cheesy acting (like blonde bimbos in those low-budget steakhouse commercials) and old effects. Truthfully, the few topics discussed in this video are more along the lines equivalent to "skeleton notes" of his corresponding book, The Rock N Roll Singer's Survival Manual. I haven't read it in full yet, but I think I should start soon! All Mark really does for this is visually show you a few concepts in the book, but don't expect to repair mirrors with your voice after watching this. It's alright. Just thought I'd give you a new perspective. 4/5 default_gamer (Valrico, FL) - See all my reviews This review is from: The Singer's Toolbox DVD (DVD) I'm going to give this maybe 4 stars only because I think this guy is awesome, but this video is non-essential.
