The Essential Guide to Become an ID Master

I'm not new to this kind of software. I go back to PageMaker 1.0, QuarkXPress 3.2, Ventura Publisher 1.0, and InDesign (ID) before 1.0 shipped. Back then they were referred to as "page layout" apps. Today, InDesign is a launching pad for all sorts of projects which we can place under the umbrella of "publishing." ID is the best of them all and the most powerful. It will soon be eleven years since InDesign 1.0 shipped. Publishing is a very different environment, today, and Adobe has responded with ID CS5 able to serve not just print but PDFs, Flash projects, and the ability to export to Dreamweaver. It's one very powerful app and even with as much background as I have, if I'm going to master ID, I need some touching up. I've been to Adobe TV and lynda.com to update my InDesign skills. For me, the learning experience which the Classroom in a Book (CIB) series offers is a way to not only learn, but to retain. If you are a Photoshop (Ps) or Illustrator (Ai) CS5 user,... 5/5 M. Classroom in a book does it again.

As usual Adobe's Classroom in a book series is the best. If you are new to Adobe, this series of books will take you from being a beginner to havein experience using most of the software's functions. If you then follow this book's training and use the skills presented within the book you will most likely develope the skills of an intermediate user. There are 14 lessons included in the book and one bonus lesson on the disk for a total of 15 lessons. The book is virtually the same as the CS4 version except it was updated to include the new tools that come with CS5. Therefore, if you are familiar with Indesign CS4 you could simply go to the Adobe website and pick up the skills for CS5. We have both versions and did not mind getting the new book because we like the lessons having the CS5 features already built in for our new people that need to learn the software. The bottom line: the Adobe Classroom in a book series is the best training series of manuals we have ever seen and we... 5/5 Tnias "A.E.M." If you have time, this is a great tool

I purchased Adobe Indesign CIB with the hopes of teaching myself the software. I have never used any Adobe software, and I am also learning on a Mac, which is new to me as well. With the book as a guide, and a lot of dedication, I have taught myself how to design basic brochures, ads and posters. This is not an intuitive program (for me anyway), but if you take the time and go slow, the CIB can literally teach a novice how to use the program. I would recommend to someone who is serious about taking the time to learn the software. 5/5 allicatt - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) My definitive reference for all things InDesign

As a graphic designer, I did not always have time to learn the ins and outs of InDesign. Too much time spent producing, too little spent learning; I am sure that many designers out there are familiar with that. In front of me are Blatner's and Kvern's volumes for InDesign CS2, CS3, CS4, and now CS5. What is so great about Real World InDesign CS5 is that it serves as a quick reference for whenever you are blocked with any specific feature. Also, a great deal of learning the application comes from just browsing the book, randomly turning pages, and being surprised by old and new features, or tips and tricks. The addition of Bob Bringhurst (lead writer for InDesign and InCopy at Adobe) to the team of authors, brings a fresh new voice. David mentions in the introduction that if it weren't for Bob, the book may not have been written. I hope that there will be many more with that new line-up of authors.Notice how I never once mentioned that you should read the book cover to... 5/5 Rufus Deuchler (Florence, Italy) - See all my reviews This review is from: Real World Adobe InDesign CS5 (Paperback) As a graphic designer, I did not always have time to learn the ins and outs of InDesign. THE reference guide for ID CS5

I am a yearbook adviser at a public high school and we create a 500+ page book (plus a number of other publications) each year. While I have at my disposal any number of online programs from my publisher, I prefer to run the course using InDesign without employing online or publisher plug-in "cheats." My goal is to have my students proficient in InDesign should they decide to pursue a career in publishing or graphic design. This book is THE go-to reference on our shelf. In our classroom, the editors refer to it as the bible (as in, "Mr. Gone, can I see the bible, or can you lookup how to pull a 4X6 photo grid for me?"). My usual instructions to my students at the beginning of the year are "if you can imagine it, we can build it." This book makes that possible. InDesign is such a powerful tool and someone like a simple high school yearbook adviser cannot even begin to scratch the surface of its uses. However, for tapping into the utmost in creativity and (more... 5/5 Mr. Gone - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Still the best book around

This is now my second attempt to review this book. I wrote a previous review last week. It was up for a nano-second and then disappeared. Who knows why? Anyway, this book is The Bible of InDesign and also happens to be a fun read (which says a lot for a 900 page computer book). The authors are wonderful writers and there's much to learn. So don't delay. Dive in. You won't be disappointed. 5/5 S. Citron (New York, NY) - See all my reviews, November 2, 2010

XML for the Rest of Us!

Despite being an Adobe Certified Instructor in InDesign, I never really understood working with XML until I read this book. Maivald and Palmer have taken an otherwise mysterious language and made it clear and understandable for anyone. This book has no peer and is a must for those interested in harnessing the power of XML. 5/5 S. Citron (New York, NY) - See all my reviews, February 2, 2008

    Superb

I nearly wept with joy when I read this book. It contains clear guidance to stuff I've been trying to get InDesign CS3 to do for months. They make it look easy - and it is with this book - but if I hadn't tried on my own for so long I wouldn't have appreciated how useful this book is. I would have paid $500 for this and would have considered it a bargain, let along $33. 5/5 E. Cahill (London, UK) - See all my reviews, March 19, 2008

    XML in design speak!

This is an outstanding book. Finally, XML explained in terminology that meshes with the way a designer thinks! Get this book and learn how to use this! You'll see a dramatic increase in your production time! (People will think you are super human as well!) I didn't take time to figure out XML in InDesign prior to this book because it was so confusing. This book does a great job exlaining how it works and giving actual examples to learn from. 5/5 Aimee L. Falk (Woodbury, Minnesota) - See all my reviews, July 31, 2008

Great programs at a good price for students

I love illustrator but didn't have the funds to spend 500 dollars on it. When I saw this set I was really excited because it was in my budget and it also provides three other useful programs as well. I ordered this and it arrived the next day. I took the code provided and simply submitted a picture of my school ID, my transcript and an enrollment verification to the provided link and got my code two days later. There was no problems and no hold ups and there is even a 30 day trial you can use while you wait for them to verify that you are a student or a teacher. I looked more into this before I bought it and it is the same as the commercial versions, can be used for commercial use and the only real catch is that you can't resell it. Over all it is a great deal for students and definitely one worth taking advantage of if you are a student in the art or design field. 5/5 Arcaderat - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Fantastic..everything you want or nearly

I was so excited to upgrade from my Creative Suites CS2, with this new CS5.5 version. I read that now InDesign had the ability to create epub books. unfortunately it does not seem to be able to do much there or I have yet to learn how to make them come out just right. So that was disappointing, thus the four stars, not five. But that said everything else is wonderful! No longer do I have to bring in guide lines to find center because the program now just does it! Wow, love that. The new photoshop upgrades are nice too, you now have a full palette for type, character, and paragraph, just like InDesign, so you get a lot more control with type in Photoshop now.I will have to add to this review as I continue to use the products, but overall, I am extremely happy! 4/5 mapsy (Oregon) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) If you have time, this is a great tool

5/5 allicatt - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) As a professional InDesign trainer, I used 75 copies of this book - purchased from Amazon - during my training seminars this month. The black and white format allows adult learners to effectively make notes and mark up important items with a red pen. With a background in graphic design, I appreciate the clean 2 column pages, large and plentiful screen captures and indented step by step instructions. Great Reference Book

I use In-Design and have found this to be a great quick reference guide to help when you have a question. It is also great to review before you purchase In-Deisgn so you know what it can do. I recommend this to anyone. 4/5 Gerard - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Extremely satisfied User

The author did a superb job of focusing her information in an orderly manner, and then presenting it using two techniques which make it virtually impossible to not understand the process. First, on one half of the page she gives you the Commands and Actions required; Second she shows you on the second half of the page images of what you should select. I find that this book is clear, precise, and extremely valuable, certainly for the new user of InDesign. Finally, she provides a detailed, carefully presented Index so you can find solutions to the problems you wish to solve. I recommend this book without reservations, and find the price very reasonable 5/5 Louis P. Solomon (Bethesda MD) - See all my reviews, November 28, 2011

I wanted a book to help me learn more of the 'depth' of InDesign. I'm an old war-horse in the industry and have learned enough about ID to do the ads, brochures, newsletters, etc. that I've needed to produce for my clients -- all the while wishing I could find a book to teach me all the secrets I used to know with Quark.I could do Quark in my sleep, and sometimes wondered if I had -- as I dozed at my computer into the wee hours of the morning working on projects.I've been pleased that I've done as well as I have with InDesign, but I've been wanting more. Knowing that the Classroom in a Book series was not what I was looking for. I wanted to learn more Shortcuts, more controls, more working knowledge. I don't want to understand WHY the program does what it does, I just need some one to tell me what buttons to push to get the results I need.I have to say that I'm on page TWENTY of the new "exploring Adobe InDesign CS5 by Terry Rydberg" and I've... 5/5 susanwib - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I love this book for InDesign

Many of the available InDesign books are highly technical in nature... perhaps more than one needs. This is geared for designers... like in eye candy. The layout nicely done, graphics are large and easy to view, the instruction simple to follow. Relevant keyboard shortcuts relevant for expediency. You'll be cooking in no time at all. I recommend this highly. 5/5 Fishychips (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
