Will using Rosetta Stone Spanish allow you to say: "Me sorprende que soy capaz de hablar un español fluido después de usar este programa sólo por un par de semanas!" ('I am amazed that I am able to speak fluent Spanish after using this program for only a few weeks')?Probably not. It is, however, a very useful and well thought out program. The Rosetta Stone line of language products all share the same basic design and interface. The key to the Rosetta Stone system is the presentation of word and action associations, influenced by context. This simulates the sort of cues that one would parse and process in speaking any language, even your own native language. Normally, you don't think about this as you speak your own language. But it's one of the hardest things to simulate outside of dealing with a second language in its own country and having the chance to deal with real life situations involving speakers of the second language... 5/5 APC Reviews "APC Reviews" (USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Rosetta Stone Spanish (Latin America) Level 1-5 Set (CD-ROM) Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?) I am half way through level 2 in Rosetta Stone Spanish, course 1-5, totale 4. The product has a lot of very good features. They do an excellent job teaching you vocabulary. The online lessons are very useful.I think many of the reviews that are available on Amazon are from people that only have a brief experience with the product. This is what I think needs improvement:1. Without a doubt, Rosetta Stone V4 TOTALe is an amazing product. It is easy to install on your PC and puts a whole world of resources at your disposal to help you learn a new language. If I could have given it 4 1/4 or 4 1/2 stars, I would have, but since I had to decide between 4 or 5, I'm giving it a 4. 5 to me is perfect and my experience with RS was not perfect. Why? Because using RS can be very frustrating to a new user. This was my first time using RS but not my first time learning a new language. I learned French the "old-fashioned way" in school and taught myself sign language from a book. In both cases, I got to ask questions of the teacher or look up additional information in my NATIVE language to help me understand the nuances of the language and to clear up any points of confusion. But RS provides ZERO assistance to the student in their NATIVE language. I understand that the very basis of Rosetta Stone is total immersion, meaning you are totally immersed... 4/5 Sheri in Reho (Rehoboth Beach, DE) - See all my reviews, October 10, 2010Audio Companion for CD or MP3 player; learning application for iPhone or iPod Touch deviceDevelop your command of the language--read, write, speak, and understandInteractive language software with proprietary speech-recognition technologyLanguage-enhancing games; live online lessons; includes headset with microphoneBuild vocabulary; negotiate complex situations; share ideas and opinions -

Rosetta Stone Spanish (Latin America) Level 1
Software (Rosetta Stone)
List Price: $179.00
Easy to use software
I've always considered myself a bit of a language idiot. I barely scrapped by in French 1, and I don't think I ever passed Spanish 2. Honestly, I know I just didn't put that extra special effort in. I was in high school and though eager to learn a new language, when it turned out to be not as easy as I expected, I pretty much gave up. Now, at almost 30 years old, I still always wish I had really mastered a language.First, I'm going to give you my language know-how so you can see if we might be on similar levels. My biggest problems are tense, plurals, conjugation, the whole male/female thing(o or a?). Just all around construction of a sentence. I can pick up words, I know numbers and food, hello, goodbye, please and thank you: the general stuff. While I'm not good with speaking, I can usually get by reading menus or maps. I'm visual, I can get the gist from a native speaker if they don't talk too fast, but forget my response, I probably sound like a caveman...for instance,... 4/5 A. Boston (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews, August 27, 2010It reminds me of language courses in high school and college
I am usually not the greatest at language. I took three years of Spanish in high school and blew through one disappointing semester of French in college, since I was studying European literature and wanted to know a main language besides Spanish connected with that. I've tried learning Italian and Gaelic (yes, Gaelic) on my own with books and also on trips abroad. But unless you have a relative or friend who is a nature speaker, it can be hard to practice. Even more so if you want to pay for a college course for a refresher. I do believe Rosetta Stone bridges this gap for the person who doesn't want to go back to college to learn this or perhaps a person who needs to learn basic Spanish for a job.At first, I had a hard time installing this on my desktop. I've bumped this down to four stars because you can't install it on more than one computer, so I had to choose between computers. This, I didn't like at all. For the price of this program, you should be able to... 3/5 Ulalume Jones "Creative Gal" (Between Nothing and Nowhere) - See all my reviews, February 24, 2011The BEST program to learn another language
I have long wanted to learn Spanish and had been told that the Rosetta Stone program with its "Dynamic Immerson" is one of the best computer-based language programs around. So I jumped at the opportunity to learn via this medium and to review it.First of all, the program would not completely load on my computer. The application CD loaded fine but when I attempted to load the language portion I would only get an error message. Fortunately, there was a technical support number included. The first person (who by all indications was the stereotypical tech support person from India) was only trained to assist with very simple questions and after about 15 minutes transferred me to customer support. When THAT person was unable to help, I began to wonder. I had to explain several times that Amazon sent this out for me to review, that it was not from a secondary supplier or a used item. This person was clueless as well and transferred me to someone who actually helped me... 5/5 Maudeen Wachsmith "BeachReader" (Port Townsend, WA) - See all my reviews, September 3, 2010Audio Companion for CD or MP3 player; learning application for iPhone or iPod Touch deviceInteractive language software with proprietary speech-recognition technologyLanguage-enhancing games; live online lessons; includes headset with microphoneMaster basic conversational skills; receive immediate and ongoing speech assessmentsBuild a foundation of fundamental vocabulary and essential language structure -

Not Rosetta Stone, But That's Not Necessarily a Bad Thing!
Don't get me wrong, Rosetta Stone is an amazing piece of software. It is; however, not the only method of learning another language. There are other options that work as well. Furthermore, there are other options that cost far less money than Rosetta Stone as well. Everybody is different, and everybody learns in different ways. While the Rosetta Stone software works for many, it is not the solution for everyone. The Instant Immersion Spanish software seems to be an excellent alternative to Rosetta Stone. It cost far, far less money; and interestingly, it has a unique and novel formula for learning the language. Rather than just being a piece of software, it offers several other unique components - such as an interactive DVD, a 16 Disk MP3 disk that can be played in an MP3 CD player or on your iPod/iPhone (awesome!), plus a great video game designed to reinforce everything you've learned. As a whole, the Instant Immersion formula is definitely novel, and seems to... 5/5 J. Beardsley (MD USA) - See all my reviews, May 24, 2011Spanish from Spain
Good for memorizing everyday phrases and words. There's no grammar to it - in case you were wondering, but that may not be a factor to you, depends on how you learn. If you want to speak the language just to get around, this is what you need, but if you want to speak Spanish fluently, this is just a good start. It seems easy to learn another language with this method; therefore, it motivates you to keep going.Side note: it might be a bit difficult to recognize the accent of Spanish speakers here in the States since most of them are from Latin America. This software teaches with a Spanish accent from Spain. 4/5 Anna - See all my reviews, May 26, 2011This is a great starter
If you are just starting out in Spanish this is worth the money. You can start with the flash cards, listen to how the words sound and then test yourself by recording how you say the word. I haven't found that it reviews your recordings to see if you say the word correctly, but trust me you will know when you hear yourself back. I like the interactivity of the software and DVD. I already speak a little spanish and used other systems before. I wouldn't say this system was the best, but it is in my top 3. I like how you can get a conversation like feel because the hardest part about learning any language is you might not have someone to practice speaking with. This will help you out with that problem. It is a lot cheaper than Rossetta Stone and I would say if you work at it, you will get the same results as Rossetta Stone. So give it a try. 3/5 Celeste Thoms "Moviemaker330" (Rochester,NY) - See all my reviews, May 26, 2011

Campanas y Silbidos!
Rosetta Stone may be the most mis-named program in existence. The *real* stone, of course, presented the same information in three different languages, permitting archeologists to crack a language they had never been able to before, based on knowing the other two.Rosetta Stone *the language program* works on the sink-or-swim paradigm. There is no English whatsoever in the interaction. No grammatical theory, no lists of conjugations, no explanations of irregular verbs. Everything is entirely picture and repetition based, and you learn like an infant does. A picture of a plate. "Plato." A picture of a girl holding a plate. "La muchacha tiene un plato". A picture of a girl holding a plate with a talk bubble coming from her mouth. "Yo tengo un plato." And so on, through three Levels (I believe five are available), of four Units per Level, and about ten Lessons per Unit. The Lessons (up to 30 interactions) cover vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and so on, and older Lessons... 4/5 ringo (California) - See all my reviews, September 15, 2010Fluenz better for me

Great software but want to point out fraud issues
I would like to start the review out by saying it is nice to get authentic software from Amazon. I first bought this item from one of the many listings on ebay which said "new and factory shrink wrapped". Well I found out after installing it that it was couterfeit and put a virus on my computer. I worked with Rosetta Stones legal department and found out that they never shrink wrap their software and any of their claimed software that is shrinkwrapped is DEFINTELY FRAUDULENT. Be aware of this and continue to buy from Amazon since it is much safer.Onto what I actually purchased. Great software but I do wish it was not all "Total emersion" but actually had some english in it so you knew exactly what they were saying to you. Would definitely buy from Amazon and Rosetta Stone again. 5/5 D. Mlnarik - See all my reviews, February 25, 2011Rosetta Stone Review
I am very happy with it; it is brain friendly and intuative. I like to do it so it's easy to keep working on it often. It's not drudgery. It has games, lessons, online etc so it's layered and diverse. I often quit because I can see myself getting tired, not because I don't want to do it anymore. I feel like I am learning though sometimes get impatient with myself because I knew I knew it. I recommend it often to people I know and get many questions about it. Yes it's pricey but it's worth it. I get to practice often as I am around many native speakers; they appreciate my effort I think. 5/5 Sandra S. I have been learning with the Rosetta Stone Level 1 (I purchased the 5 level set) for three weeks. I am already able to speak words and some sentences. I have been spending approximately one-half hour to one hour each day going through the lessons. I am very impressed with this product. The picture support and presentation style of the lessons are excellent. The games are engaging and allow for productive repeated practice. The most excellent feature is the opportunity to practice on-line with a native speaker, which forces you to use your newly acquired skills. I felt the attention received in the on-line portion of the lessons was more than a student would get in a typical high school or college level course, making the practice more effective for the time spent. I put off buying this product because of the expense, but now I feel it is worth every penny and more. I purchased the Pimsleur's Conversational Spanish CD set with 18 lessons (not sure if this is the same, but close). I am a military brat and stand true to the belief that learning another language should start at the early elementary age. I retained more Japanese in 3 years, 24 years ago, than 3 years of studying Spanish at the high school level. Being in the construction industry, the hispanic community and workers have flourished, and with that my need to communicate with them. I have bought and tried other types of audio Spanish teaching media, but the Pimsleur's method is truly the only one that actually teaches you to think for yourself, which is what is actually going to happen when your in a conversation. To start with a conversation, and not memorizing all the verbs and their tenses and numbers, etc has made this very enjoyable and wanting to buy the entire volume. (I called directly today to order.) I disagree with all the glowing reviews, and seriously doubt any of the reviewers started from square one and felt they were prepared to visit a Spanish-speaking country from it alone.Pimsleur does have a great idea, inspired by the Foreign Service Institute's approach, but the thing is it takes TIME. What's good about the method is you're drilled and drilled and drilled... what you learn here will stay with you a long time. The flipside (and it's a big one) is that with all that repetition, you learn almost nothing. You'll learn the numbers (up to a hundred), how to tell time, how to order a generic beer (almost every lesson spends considerable time on this), and how to ask where a hotel or restaurant is.But if the hotel is not "right here" or "over there," (the only possible answers, apparently) you'll have no clue. Forget about "turn left at the intersection and continue for two-and-a-half blocks." You can order a beer, but forget about a salad,... 2/5 Jon Zuck "frimmin" (Norfolk, VA United States) - See all my reviews, January 6, 2007Only for the Novice
I bought Pimsleur's Conversational Spanish in hopes of addressing my greatest deficiency in the language: the art of conversation. After reading so many positive reviews, I certainly thought that the product would help to that end. Sadly, though, its sixteen lessons stay on a very basic level, culminating with learning how to say "seventy" and "We want to eat with you," words and phrases I did not need a cd to teach me.If you are starting without any Spanish background, this may be a good, practical item to buy. If not, I would recommend looking for another product. 2/5 Peter P. Finney III (Gonzales, Louisiana United States) - See all my reviews, January 20, 2007 -

Rosetta Stone Homeschool Spanish (Latin America) Level 1 including Audio Companion
Software (Rosetta Stone)
List Price: $159.00
good but not great
I'd heard so much about the Rosetta Stone, but I was a little disappointed. It's great in that it uses all learning styles to learn the language. It works great for me but not so good for my 6-yr-old. You really need to be reading to get the full benefit from this program. Also, I've had a lot of trouble installing and using it. I must say, there is a toll-free number that you can call for help. You may be on hold a while and have to be bumped up a tier because the person can't figure out your problem, but EVENTUALLY, you'll get the problem solved. 4/5 P. Smith "Love2Sign" (CA) - See all my reviews, September 23, 2010Great for tracking student's success
This has been good for my teen daughter, who had never studied a foreign language before. Like all Rosetta Stone products, it uses immersion and repetition to teach and utilizes spoken words, written words, and pictures. Any child old enough to read English decently well could use this program. The homeschool edition includes more "curriculum" choices, including one that spreads each level across a full year of school, with a fairly small amount of work for each day.For my husband and I, who have both learned other languages, even the faster-paced Rosetta Stone curricula are frustrating. We have learned to prefer the traditional verb tables and lists of vocabulary to memorize and learn faster that way.Though registering the program did lock me out of putting it on a second computer in the house, Rosetta Stone's support helped me through installing it on a second computer without any problems. 4/5 J. Gerth - See all my reviews, April 24, 2011Unhappy with homeschool version
The homeschooling version 3 is designed to give all the users in your homeschooling family access to the program with parental controls in order to assign and keep track of assignments. The BIG problem with this is that the licence is only good for two computers! If you have more than one student, you might as well forget it! Of course you can have up to five users on each computer, but I have four users each with their own computers. We are big on technology and sharing computers for anything is simply not how we use technology. I contacted tech support to ask if I could put it on our home server and have everyone access it that way. I was told no. I was then told to contact sales and consider buying a business version. Um... no thanks. I will have to find another company for our foreign language needs. 2/5 J. Rosetta Stone Spanish (Spain) Level 1
Software (Rosetta Stone)
List Price: $179.00
Deeply flawed, in concept and practice.
I'm a linguist by training, with a focus in how people learn languages. The concept behind Rosetta Stone is based on the observation that children can induce the grammar of their mother tongue from examples in which the specific functions of linguistic units are contrasted. As Rosetta Stone would have it, since children learn effortlessly this way, then why not adults? The problem is that children require millions of impressions to induce the grammar. Also, when mature humans learn a second language, the syntax of the first language interferes with the notions one constructs of the second. It's therefore highly inefficient to teach language this way. With adults it's actually much more efficient to be more explicit about the grammar of the target language -- to provide clear descriptions of the rules accompanied by many examples and much practice. Immersion can be very useful, but not to the exclusion of explicit instruction in the rules of the language. I found... 2/5 John Stewart (Brooklyn, NY United States) - See all my reviews, March 27, 2011RosettaStone
This software was actually recommended by a friend. It installs well and we just started using it so we'll know how well this helps us learn Spanish a few months from now. We've used other applications before but I think this will be the one that wins out over all the rest. 5/5 John Deutsch (Cambridge, MD) - See all my reviews, October 13, 2011Great Program
Rosetta Stone is very effective in its ability to teach the language by putting you right in the middle of the language. I highly recommend Rosetta Stone to anyone interested in learning another language. 5/5 Michael D.
