  Inexpensive, but limited

  There is no guide to pronunciation, so if you're really a beginner you're in trouble. There are a lot of useful phrases and sentences, and it would be possible - although tedious - to use Kindle's search feature to find what you want in a particular situation. I recently competed level 1 of Rosetta Stone's (vastly more expensive) Italian; without that (and having learned pronunciation), using this book would be hit or miss if the Italians responded to your questions or statements in any way other than the examples in the book. An annoyance is the occasional mistake - calico for calcio (football/soccer), il figlia for la figlia (daughter), ingress for ingresso (entrance), and maybe others that I didn't catch.For the price, you can't really go too far wrong, but I don't see this as a stand-alone aid. 2/5 Thomas E.   Too many Errors!

  I purchased the book "Italian for Beginners" with high hopes to help with a little Italian for an upcoming trip, but I was disappointed that it did not seem to be a reliable source of help.On the positive side, the book was very inexpensive, has some useful words and phrases, including idioms not always found in travel vocabularies. It also has a guide to grammar in the back which is useful, as well as some helpful tips.However, the book provides no clue regarding pronunciation of Italian words, which I feel is a serious error for beginners. Instead, there is only the rather gratuitous comment: "A lot of Italian words are easy to pronounce . . ." As I have learned from other sources, there are many tricky problems in pronouncing Italian syllables, such as "ce" and "chi," as well as words like "ho" and "che" and "figlio."   I simply find the program to be too simple! There's a great deal of explaining and not a whole lot of doing.   It's a very involving book with a thrilling plot and well characterized characters. As an Italian learner, I found the book to be very useful. The information about the Italian world is well presented, sometimes even with images. The language is simple, direct and comprehensible even to students at an elementary level.   Fun practice for Italian learners, perfect for intermediate level

  I wish I had a dozen books like this!It was perfect for an intermediate level- a good mix of verbs and verb tenses, use of pronouns, etc. Handy cultural info included and enough vocabulary to let you learn a bit without making it tedious. The story is cute and keeps you interested (which also stops the urge to constantly grab a dictionary for words you don't know).It's not long, but it's an excellent value for the price.Only one complaint- towards the end in a pivotal scene for the plot I am quite certain the author used the wrong name a couple of times in a dialogue. I read over it a few times and it just couldn't make any sense unless the names were backwards.   Every year my Italian godmother gives me a box of these candies for Christmas and I have to work hard not to devour them within the day. Within the box, one third are lightly orange flavored torrone, one third vanilla, and one third mildly lemon flavored - all are excellent, soft nougat (that unfortunately leave you wanting another one!).   Nostalgia as well as nougat

  It was by chance I stumbled on to this candy, thanks to a friend who chose an Italian Restaurant for us in Portland, Oregon today. (And a right fine restaurant it is too, I might add.) I did not think any of the wonder from Christmas as a girl could come rushing back so profoundly. But there was this candy. We Italians, of course, were Catholic. We were poor as my parents were first generation, and so only had this candy at Christmas. In its cute, well actually, very lovely artisticaly pleasing, boxes. Because we took Holy Communion and the wafers from the priest's hands to our tongues were the same egg white as what coated these candies, it was like the candy held so much more meaning. I would lift off the egg white and ponder the signifiance of Communion and how the candy was also a bit Holy. Little kids and their ideas. I had not seen it in fourty or more years (I am 61). By chance, a friend and I were talking about it with relish (pun intended) only a week ago.   One bite brought back some great memories!

  These are exactly the candies I've been craving for so long. A million years ago when the earth was still cooler, once a week I'd walk with my dad to the delicatessen and he'd buy me some while he waited for those yummy cold cuts. My favorite part was the thin paper-like wafer that would stick to my gums then quickly melt. Then I'd bite into a thick nougat loaded with almonds and slowly chew every morsel. Probably why my parents let us have these since it kept us kids quiet while they shopped!The La Florentine is close to what I remember though I was looking for the originals in the blue box.   Having tried to learn Italian for years using one sanitized text or another, I found this book with some sizzle. It's fun to get out of the language lab and understand what they actually said on the 'Godfather'.   Will really keep you interested!

  It's an excellent book to learn all the slangs and bad words in Italian. It's easy reading and enjoyable. Not too difficult to remember the words. The author has done a great job trying to capture the student's interest and enthusiasm. Even the native Italians can benefit from it, because some of the words and expressions are quite new to them, particularly to the old generation. For some reason we tend to remember the slangs and cuss words better than ordinary and literally work. I cannot wait to jump to the next chapter and pick my curiosiy at the next topic.
