Fluenz F2 vs Rosetta Stone: On a MacBook

I went on a vacation to Costa Rica, and resolved to learn Spanish. I studied French in high school and college, and I enjoyed it for the most part. I've NEVER had an opportunity to actually use my French, as I've found that everyone who speaks French usually speaks English. So, I thought I would try to learn Spanish, and maybe I could actually use it.I found a website which reviewed many Spanish Learning Software packages, and many of them are only PC compatible. The two highest rated Mac compatibles were Fluenz and Rosetta Stone, #2 & #3, respectively. I had seen the Rosetta Stone commercials ad nauseum, so I thought it would be a good starting point. The "no drills" and "no memorization" aspects sounded great, so RS was my starting point.I started out with Rosetta Stone 1, 2, & 3. RS is a beautiful program, with lovely pictures, and an intuitive interface. There were many, many times when I was clueless as to what to do, so I would just click until I... 4/5 Todd Smith "Hot Toddy" (Pawling, NY) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Far superior to Rosetta Stone

Like everyone else, I'm comparing what I consider to be the two top dogs when it comes to Spanish language learning software: Fluenz and Rosetta Stone. Which software you should choose depends on what you want to be able to do first. Do you think it's more important to learn to order food in a restaurant, or explain where a cat is in relation to a table? It's a serious question, because therein lies the difference between these two programs.Rosetta Stone assumes that you are an infant who should learn colors and animals first. If you are an infant, stop reading, and navigate to the Rosetta Stone section. If you are an adult who would rather learn the word for "cellphone" before "horse," then you should undoubtedly choose Fluenz.Fluenz features a slick user-interface and a real person who acts as your personal tutor. (Incidentally, she is quite attractive.) Unlike Rosetta Stone, which uses a strict immersion model, Fluenz relates Spanish to English in order to... 5/5 Ex Ell (Oklahoma, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Fluenz Spanish (Latin America) 1+2+3+4+5 with supplemental Audio CDs and Podcasts (DVD-ROM) Like everyone else, I'm comparing what I consider to be the two top dogs when it comes to Spanish language learning software: Fluenz and Rosetta Stone. Highly Recommended

I have completed 4 of the 5 levels of Fluenz Spanish and am on lesson 3 of level 5. Before investing in this great language learning program, I tried RS, Rocket Spanish and Tell Me More Spanish. Fluenz is by far the best language learning software out there if you are serious about LEARNING the Spanish language. My background...Never studied a language before. I'm retired and was looking to something to keep the brain hoping along. I liked the Spanish language so much that I decided to work towards an oral proficiency rating so I enrolled in a Spanish certificate program at the University of Wisconsin (7 semesters of Spanish required). I tested out of Spanish 1. I'm currently taking Spanish 2, and outside of additional vocabulary, I found that I knew all of grammar and sentence construction required for Spanish 2 and should have enrolled in Spanish 3. So, I'm at least at a 3rd semester university level of Spanish. My Spanish professor continually praises my pronunciation,... 5/5 Cheryl Holden "Tutor" (brookfield, wi United States) - See all my reviews, October 5, 2010

    Fluenz and Rosetta

After working for several months with Rosetta Stone I decided to give Fluenz a try. There seems to be a bit of an argument between these two so I figured I could benefit by standing on solid middle ground. Truth is, there is such middle ground, but also both products are opposed to each other in many respects. By this I mean that I have profited from learning with both, but because they are so different. These are the highlights of my experience:1. Rosetta Stone will bombard you with words, many of them, one after the other. That's their strength. The idea is that you learn words by matching them to pictures. They have technology to recognize your voice, and it works. But you do feel like a child, because many words are irrelevant and a little childish, because you don't understand what's going on beyond the words thrown at you, and the words and images just keep on coming. That's how you start.2. Fluenz begins with a teacher, Sonya, who explains the whole... 5/5 Java R. Fluenz delivers

I had high school Spanish more than 50 years ago, but never managed to say anything more complicated than "Where's the bathroom?". I've averaged one lesson per day for the past 19 days since receiving Fluenz and last night ordered, commented on and paid for an entire meal - in Spanish - at a Mexican restaurant.Fluenz is a little different from other language programs I've read about: There is no formal vocabulary building, no verb conjugation or memorization, no rote anything. Typically, one lesson will concentrate on one scenario: shopping, airports, restaurants, etc. Real world situations. Dialogue will be exchanged between two participants, then your personal tutor, Sonia, will dissect everything. Following Sonia's explanations will be... 5/5 Lloyd J. At last, a wonderful program to learn Spanish

I'm a native speaker of Spanish but have reviewed this program for several co-workers at a multilateral institution in Washington D.C. Fluenz Spanish 1+2 is a multimedia application that comes in two DVD-ROMs. The material is organized in sessions that are led by a charismatic tutor on full motion video. She does a very good job of explaining the intricacies of Spanish vocabulary, grammar and usage from the point of view of an English-speaker, and in plain English. Each session begins with the tutor's brief introduction, followed by a conversation that contains the material to be worked on, followed by her longer tutorial. These video tutorials present the most effective summaries of how Spanish works I've ever heard. Following the tutorial the program goes on to a series of 13 different kinds of fully interactive workouts. These grow increasingly challenging, and force the user to review the material by writing it, reading it, listening to it, and recording it. These workouts have... 5/5 Maria Pardo - See all my reviews, December 16, 2007

Very effective way to learn basic Spanish

I did a formal review of the Fluenz Mandarin program and have had the opportunity to use the Spanish software before its official release. Fluenz Spanish 1 is designed for beginners (teens and up) who want to develop a good foundation before pursuing more advanced Spanish study or who simply want to be able to communicate on a basic level in Spanish. Familiarity with the Spanish language is an increasingly important skill in the US and it's very useful that Fluenz has come out with such a comprehensive intro-level Spanish course.Like previous offerings from Fluenz, the Spanish program uses an elegant modern aesthetic, relying on the latest flash technology for video sessions and "workouts." The Fluenz learning system is unique in its use of an on-screen tutor who guides users on video throughout the program and its practice of "leveraging" your knowledge of English to help you learn Spanish faster. The developers have kept the same types of challenging exercises used... 5/5 Dr. C. A. Holland (Columbia, MO, USA) - See all my reviews, September 27, 2007

    Fantastic Product

Usually a few lessons into any self-teaching language tool, I get bored and give up. Fluenz has done something unheard of, which is not only keeping me on pace, but to look forward to doing so. Every day, or every other day, I can't wait to spend an hour or so in finishing the next lesson and build my comprehension using a variety of learning techniques to hit the concepts home. I really appreciate the fact that there are small teaching segments throughout a lesson that firstly prepare you early in the lesson, and finally summarize what you are learning at the end.I also love the fact that it's not simply trying to get you to the point where you can only interact in ONE particular situation, such as in a restaurant, or coffee shop. While practically tricking the user, it feels covert in the way they teach you how to conjugate (Scary word) verbs, and teach you gender recognition of nouns. I do have some very basic learning of academic Spanish and French that I had... 5/5 L. Bubalo - See all my reviews, February 11, 2008

The best software for learning Spanish

I checked out the demo for the Spanish 1 program on the Fluenz website. Very impressive! The program just came out but it looks extremely thorough and I really like the instruction from a video tutor. Also very well designed visually. I have done a good deal of research in the last couple weeks and Fluenz is by far the most complete Spanish learning program I have come across (and there are many!). It makes sense to buy from Amazon, as you get a discount from the Fluenz website price. I am very happy that I took the time to find Fluenz instead of just going with one of the bigger companies. Best Program on the Market

Here are my thoughts on Fluenz after having gone through level 1 and most of level 2:1. Leverage your English - The teaching style has been covered extensively in reviews of , so I won't go into it too much. I will just point out that an important part of adult learning is making connections to existing knowledge. This is why learning subsequent languages is easier than learning your first foreign language - you have more vocabulary and structures to refer back to. As far as I know, Fluenz is the only program that actively leverages your knowledge of English for learning Spanish, and it makes retaining the information so much easier.2. Human Touch - Sonia gives encouraging comments,... 5/5 Ellis Atwood - See all my reviews, November 4, 2009

    Outstanding Program!

I got Fluenz Spanish for my girlfriend a while back and have had a chance to see her progress and to check out the program as I've helped her with her Spanish. We just got the upgrade to F2, which Fluenz was gracious enough to send for a small shipping fee, as well as the brand new Spanish 3. I decided to write a review based on her work of a few lessons with Spanish 3 as well as the prior work with levels 1 and 2.1. The InterfaceAs an engineer I can't help but look at the interface as a finely tuned answer to the issue of how anything can and should be learned on a computer screen. Fluenz has made a leap beyond the classic PowerPoint interface by introducing an engaging teacher, intuitive navigation, and a deft combination of interactivity with straight explanations. They rescued the virtues of a good tutor and managed to integrate her with extensive interactivity. You get the best of both worlds. Although as an app it's not perfect, it's getting there. Best way to learn Spanish quickly as an adult

I purchased Rosetta Stone in Jan 2007 and fooled around with it a little, but soon realized that learning how to say "the boy is under the airplane" in Spanish wouldn't get me up to speed very quickly. When I decided to visit South America in Nov 2008, I purchased the Spanish 1 & 2 (previous version)from Fluenz (through Amazon). It was great! Sonia gets you up to speed very quickly and I had less than 2 months to become fluent enough to travel. That was a sucess. I was able to get through customs, order a meal, shop and negociate, take a taxi, check into a hotel - all in Spanish - talking with people who spoke no english whatsoever. I just received the upgraded versions of 1 & 2 along with #3 which was just released and I've only done the first couple of lessons, but I am learning quickly.I did contact customer support to clarify some questions, and they respond immediately and go above what anyone would expect from a suppport group. I dig it

I like this software a lot. The lessons are easy to navigate. The instructors are engaging. The pace (so far) is just right.I REALLY like their philosophy. As adults we can't learn another language the way we learned our first one. Our brains are physically different; they have been re-wired. So it only makes sense that we have to learn a language in a different way than we did when we were toddlers. Fluenz recognize this and build their program with that in mind.I would list the downsides, but honestly there are none so far. I guess I could say it doesn't immediately make me fluent and it's still hard work, but there's no way around that! 5/5 Benjamin Conner "BigBen" (Clemmons, NC, USA) - See all my reviews, April 17, 2012

    Thoroughly pleased

I was well into the second disc Spanish program for Latin American Spanish when the version for Spain arrived. As an educator myself, that is the real key - has my use of the content allowed the new learning to "stick"? As a comprehensive review, I started the program over to "tune my ear" to the different accent, and recently completed session disc 1:10 of the software. So far, the differences in vocabulary have been minor, but my retention of content has been surprising solid. There are several great improvements to the program since I received my first "red box" from Fluenz:- the use of adult learning strategies is clear, and the program's design is deliberate and meaningful- the "completion status" bar on the bottom of the screen is incredibly helpful- the presentation of concepts, while similar to the previous version, is very straightforward, which I like (and, to be honest, why I bought the program in the first place for one of my students... and... 5/5 C. Amazing product!

My husband and I are absolute beginners in Spanish. We have a Spanish foreign exchange student, and are planning to travel to Spain this summer to visit his family. After having researched many products, we settled on Fluenz because we liked the approach of really understanding what we are learning. As adult learners, immersion did not seem like the best approach for us. The Fluenz program is very easy to use, and motivating. You learn useful vocabulary and grammar and learn by listening, typing and speaking. You can practice what you've learned in the program using on-line flashcards and with audio CDs. After only having completed 5 sessions in the 1st CD, I feel that I would be comfortable going to a restaurant in Madrid and ordering and asking for the check. With practice and hard work, I know I will be able to communicate well when I go there this summer! 5/5 AnneA - See all my reviews This review is from: Fluenz Spanish (Spain) 1+2+3 with supplemental Audio CDs (DVD-ROM) My husband and I are absolute beginners in Spanish. Not Rosetta Stone, But That's Not Necessarily a Bad Thing!

Don't get me wrong, Rosetta Stone is an amazing piece of software. It is; however, not the only method of learning another language. There are other options that work as well. Furthermore, there are other options that cost far less money than Rosetta Stone as well. Everybody is different, and everybody learns in different ways. While the Rosetta Stone software works for many, it is not the solution for everyone. The Instant Immersion Spanish software seems to be an excellent alternative to Rosetta Stone. It cost far, far less money; and interestingly, it has a unique and novel formula for learning the language. Rather than just being a piece of software, it offers several other unique components - such as an interactive DVD, a 16 Disk MP3 disk that can be played in an MP3 CD player or on your iPod/iPhone (awesome!), plus a great video game designed to reinforce everything you've learned. As a whole, the Instant Immersion formula is definitely novel, and seems to... 5/5 J. Beardsley (MD USA) - See all my reviews, May 24, 2011

    Spanish from Spain

Good for memorizing everyday phrases and words. There's no grammar to it - in case you were wondering, but that may not be a factor to you, depends on how you learn. If you want to speak the language just to get around, this is what you need, but if you want to speak Spanish fluently, this is just a good start. It seems easy to learn another language with this method; therefore, it motivates you to keep going.Side note: it might be a bit difficult to recognize the accent of Spanish speakers here in the States since most of them are from Latin America. This software teaches with a Spanish accent from Spain. 4/5 Anna - See all my reviews, May 26, 2011

    This is a great starter

If you are just starting out in Spanish this is worth the money. You can start with the flash cards, listen to how the words sound and then test yourself by recording how you say the word. I haven't found that it reviews your recordings to see if you say the word correctly, but trust me you will know when you hear yourself back. I like the interactivity of the software and DVD. I already speak a little spanish and used other systems before. I wouldn't say this system was the best, but it is in my top 3. I like how you can get a conversation like feel because the hardest part about learning any language is you might not have someone to practice speaking with. This will help you out with that problem. It is a lot cheaper than Rossetta Stone and I would say if you work at it, you will get the same results as Rossetta Stone. So give it a try. 3/5 Celeste Thoms "Moviemaker330" (Rochester,NY) - See all my reviews, May 26, 2011

    Una caja roja y bella!!

Fluenz Spanish is a great choice with which to learn the ever popular language. Concise and clear explanations in English clear a whole lot up. Many of us are exposed to Spanish all the time, and people tend to try and memorize phrases, but in reality nothing works better than understanding how the language actually works. The teacher, Sonia, is really good at it, and her explanations in English go a long way in helping learners make sense of the language. Her positive tone and personal stories help you along the difficult journey of learning a language. I think her contribution is invaluable, and the overall method extremely effective. Get the red box and it will change your life! 5/5 D. omran - See all my reviews, January 25, 2008

Rosetta aint want nothing on this

I have used several self-paced tools for learning Spanish over the years and none of them seemed to have gotten it right. Fluenz has done this in a very unique and interactive way. One thing, I am always stunned by other packages of is the fact that in one's adult life, learning is achieved differently than earlier in life and I think Fluenz accounts for this verykey difference. Added to which the interactive menus are well thought out and intuitive, making the product easy to use and most importantly fun to enjoy. Fantastic product, if there were a sixed star, it would definitely get it 5/5 Andre D. Benn (Washington, DC United States) - See all my reviews, January 27, 2008

Love it so far, many improvements over 1st version

I enjoyed the old version of Spanish 2 except for a couple quirks. Having to run the program from a DVD was not great and you had to press the action button multiple times to get a reaction. The F2 version fixes those issues and more. You can now run the program off the hard drive with much better navigation and you only have to hit the play button once. One new wrinkle occurs when you get a wrong answer. In the old version you could click on the answer button to see where you went wrong and move on. The new version makes you correct the mistake before you can leave the screen. The things I like about Fluenz overall remain. The program really holds your interest. I have a hard time motivating myself to learn from books. This is by far the best program I've used, though to be fair I've not tried Rosetta Stone.Mark Trulock 5/5 Mark Trulock "Flounder" (Chicago, il USA) - See all my reviews, October 30, 2009
