Professional Visual Studio 2010

Creator: Nick Randolph, David Gardner, Chris Anderson, Michael Minutillo | Computers - 2010-07-09

This book's first section is dedicated to familiarizing you with the core aspects of Visual Studio 2010.

Publisher: Wrox

About this book
A must-have guide that covers all the new features of Visual Studio 2010Visual Studio allows you to create and manage programming projects for the Windows platform, and the new 2010 version has undergone a major overhaul comprised of significant changes. Written by an author team of veteran programmers and developers, "Professional Visual Studio 2010" gets you quickly up to speed on what you can expect from the newest version of Visual Studio. This book's first section is dedicated to familiarizing you with the core aspects of Visual Studio 2010. Everything you need is contained in the first five chapters, from the IDE structure and layout to the various options and settings you can change to make the user interface synchronize with your own way of doing things. From there, the remainder of the book is broken into 11 parts: Getting Started: In this part, you learn how to take control of your projects and organize them in ways that work with your own style.Digging Deeper: Though the many graphical components of Visual Studio that make a programmer's job easier are discussed in many places throughout this book, you often need help when you're in the process of actually writing code. This part deals with features that support the coding of applications such as IntelliSense, code refactoring, and creating and running unit tests In the latest version of the .NET framework, enhancements were added to support dynamic languages and move towards feature parity between the two primary .NET languages, C# and VB. This part covers changes to these languages, as well as looking at a range of features that will help you write better and more consistent code.Rich Client and Web Applications: For support building everything from Office add-ins to cloud applications, Visual Studio enables you to develop applications for a wide range of platforms. These two parts cover the application platforms that are supported within Visual Studio 2010, including ASP.NET and Office, WPF, Silverlight 2 and ASP.NET MVC.Data: A large proportion of applications use some form of data storage. Visual Studio 2010 and the .NET Framework include strong support for working with databases and other data sources. This part examines how to use DataSets, the Visual Database Tools, LINQ, Synchronization Services and ADO.NET Entity Framework to build applications that work with data. It also shows you how you can then present this data using Reporting.Application Services: Through the course of building an application you are likely to require access to services that may or may not reside within your organization. This part covers core technologies such as WCF, WF, Synchronization Services and WCF RIA services that you can use to connect to these services.Configuration and Internationalization: The built-in support for configuration files allows you to adjust the way an application functions on the fly without having to rebuild it. Furthermore, resource files can be used to both access static data and easily localize an application into foreign languages and cultures. This part of the book shows how to use .NET configuration and resource files.Debugging: Application debugging is one of the more challenging tasks developers have to tackle, but correct use of the Visual Studio 2010 debugging features will help you analyze the state of the application and determine the cause of any bugs. This part examines the rich debugging support provided by the IDE.Build and Deployment: In addition to discussing how to build your solutions effectively and getting applications into the hands of your end users, this part also deals with the process of upgrading your projects from previous versions.Customizing and Extending Visual Studio: If the functionality found in the previous part isn't enough to help you in your coding efforts, Microsoft has made Visual Studio 2010 even more extensible. This part covers the automation model, how to write add-ins and macros, and then how to use a new extensibility framework, MEF, to extend Visual Studio 2010.Visual Studio Ultimate: The final part of the book examines the additional features only available in the Premium and Ultimate versions of Visual Studio 2010. In addition, you'll also learn how the Team Foundation Server provides an essential tool for managing software projects.Though this breakdown of the Visual Studio feature set provides the most logical and easily understood set of topics, you may need to look for specific functions that will aid you in a particular activity. To address this need, references to appropriate chapters are provided whenever a feature is covered in more detail elsewhere in the book."Professional Visual Studio 2010 "is for all developers new to Visual Studio as well as those programmers who have some experience but want to learn about features they may have previously overlooked. If you are familiar with the way previous versions of Visual Studio worked, you may want to skim over Part I, which deals with the basic constructs that make up the user interface, and move on to the remainder of the book where the new features found in Visual Studio 2010 are discussed in detail. While you may be familiar with most of Part I, it is worth reading this section in case there are features of Visual Studio 2010 that you haven't seen or used before. If you're just starting out, you'll greatly benefit from the first part, where basic concepts are explained and you're introduced to the user interface and how to customize it to suit your own style.

    Visual Studio Tome

I've been using Visual Studio for development for as long as .NET has been around,I've had no problem getting code written, compiled and debugged. In the back of my mind I knew that Visual Studio had a heap of features andwould often see a presenter press a button here, or change a setting there, and would think that one day I'll spend some time digging deeper into Visual Studio. With the release of 2010, Visual Studio is bigger than ever, and I'm really glad thatI choose this book as my tour guide.I was a bit arrogant to think that I could learn all the features of Visual Studio withoutthis book, it took 4 authors (and it's not a little book at all), to cover Visual Studio 2010.Any full time developer who hasn't read a book on Visual Studio, now's about time you did, and I recommend this tome(did I mention its not a little book?!). 4/5 Jason Schluter (Adelaide, Australia) - See all my reviews This review is from: Professional Visual Studio 2010 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) (Paperback) I've been using Visual Studio for development for as long as .NET has been around,I've had no problem getting code written, compiled and debugged. Great Book for novice and experienced

Two huge learning curves await anyone that wants to know about MSFT's .NET framework 1) The Framework itself and 2) The tool to develop the applicaitons. Having spent lots of time learning just the framework (going back to version 1.0) I hadn't dug into the IDE much. I just downloaded the free versions of Visual Studio Express and dug in. Owning the current version of VS2010 Professional has changed that for me, and I figured I should "dig-in". This book is perfect for that. There are 57 chapters in this book with almost 100% focus on Visual Studio. Very rarely does the book go into the Framework details other than to show you how to set up specific things within Visual Studio to go to next step. It's exactly the book you need if you are a good .NET programmer but want to take it to the next "Professional" level. By learning the internals of Visual Studio itself, you are destined to become a "Professional" .NET developer.I highly recommend this one, as... 5/5 John W. Good coverage, some missing sentences, broken examples

As shortly said in the title:according to me this book offers a good (i.e. extended) coverage of the features offered by Visual Studio 2010, including the many new features in this 2010 version. There's plenty of features described, and as a professional you cannot go without at least knowing that they exist... You have to know well your main tool!In the final chapters the book also gives an overview of so-called "Application Lifecycle Management" related features: check the other Visual Studio Wrox book on A.L.M. if you need a deeper description on those topics.Maybe, in order to get the book done so quickly after VS2010 release, not everything has been thoroughly reviewed: and here's the bad part.It happened many times to find broken/bugged code examples; code samples with missing bits or missing textual description; changes in subsequent versions of a code sample with misleading highlighted differences. The result is that sometimes you are left to wonder if... 3/5 GiUmaTo - See all my reviews This review is from: Professional Visual Studio 2010 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) (Paperback) As shortly said in the title:according to me this book offers a good (i.e. extended) coverage of the features offered by Visual Studio 2010, including the many new features in this 2010 version. Awesome Tool, incredibly intuitive and packed with features

I've done VBA programming for awhile and I decided to take the plunge into .NET programming, primarily with VB.net. I've had this for only a day but I am extremely impressed with the robust features and "on-the-fly" developing support tools this has. I mostly played in the Office 2010 add-in templates and it is impressive how much work it saves you. It has everything from the calling procedures, ribbon customizations, and deployment solutions all set up and ready to go. And that is only one small functionality for one purpose. I cannot wait to start dabbling in the database functionalities and other features this has to offer. 5/5 T. Nield - See all my reviews, November 16, 2011

    Great Product

This product has some great new improvements and seems to work fine. My only complaint is that Microsoft really socks it to you in terms of price. Apple provides its new Xcode 4 software good for programming on Macs, iPhones, and Ipads to non developers for less than 5 bucks. Free if you are a member of their developers group. 4/5 J. VS 2010 FOR ROCKET SCIENTISTS

There are some subjects that should naturally be beyond the scope of dummy books. One should not expect a title like, "Flying a spacecraft for dummies". The question then is, does Visual Studio 2010 belong in the rocket science class of subjects? I doubt that Microsoft will take it as a compliment if anyone says that this product is so tough that only nuclear physicists can understand it. I have no doubt that Andrew Moore put a lot of effort into the 900-page book, which going by other Dummy books, is a giant. However, I suggest that the publishers do another review of the title in the interest of the Dummy Book industry. To start with, Andrew Moore states on page 2 that he intends the book to help a lot of people, from application developers to advanced developers and others. One wonders then who a dummy is in his imagination. Please bear in mind that a dummy book should address the needs of a dummy to start with. Highly Recommended - Definitely a Keeper

This is an excellent comprehensive study of Visual Studio 2010 and .NET development and web development. It covers all the new bells and whistles in Visual Studio 2010. Many of the sections are "for dummies" because if you have a Visual Studio 2008 background, there is a lot of repetition. But if you're new to .NET development, this book is very detailed and everything you need to know about everything in regard to programming. If you're an experienced developer, it has a lot of entry level material that's easy to skim over. It has a section on creating a Facebook app that I'm looking forward to trying out. This book is definitely a keeper. It advertises 7 books in one, and that is certainly true. There is so much in this book. Although it is definitely best for a beginner, even an experienced developer will learn a lot of new things pertinent to VS2010. 5/5 Nannette "Nannette" (Kansas USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Visual Studio 2010 All-in-One For Dummies (Paperback) This is an excellent comprehensive study of Visual Studio 2010 and .NET development and web development. I always cringe when I see a "For Dummies" book. Therefore, it was particularly challenging for me to buy this one. However, I have a Kindle and got to review the downloaded free sample. A great introduction to Visual Studio 2010

One may wonder how anyone could write a decent introductory book to Visual Studio and related programming, do it just over 400 pages with decent sized type and screenshots, and still cover a little bit of everything from Asp.Net to MVC to WPF. This book successfully manages that task quite well. The first four chapters get you up to speed on finding your way around visual studio enough to get a project started. It also includes brief tutorial on programming in both Visual Basic and C#. If you have programmed in other languages, or you are just starting programming, this will give you just enough knowledge to get started inside Visual Studio.. It covers program structure, some language syntax, and how to best use the Visual Studio make programming tasks easier. The next three chapters cover creating projects, debugging, and accessing data. While whole books can be written on these subjects, Joe manages to hit the useful high points. Since much time can be... 5/5 K. Halvorson - See all my reviews, May 16, 2010

    Helpful but some assembly necessary

I like the book and it's really helping me in making 'baby steps' into C#. But if I were an absolute beginner, some of the technical difficulties might have made me give up. While I'm only through Chapter 3 so far, there are two things I'd point out (one of which another reviewer has mentioned):1. The code samples have mistakes in them. I know how hard it is, trust me, and it may well be an editor's error - it may well be unique to the Kindle edition as well. But as has been mentioned, leaving out important directives in code just really frustrates the reader no end. If Joe or the publisher had, on a web site, a link to an 'errata' page that would be *ever* do nice.2. The other thing that took some getting used to for me was that the book covers both C# and VB; and nearly every discussion of code snippets addresses both. Until i got used to skipping over the paragraphs that were not C# (and the even-harder-to-skip-over in line parenthetic comments about VB), I kept goign... 4/5 Miles Kehoe (Cupertino, CA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This is not the only book I bought to learn C#, but after a lot of searching, it's the one I believed could get me "up and running" in minimum time. After a few days with Rod's book and DVD combo, I'm more convinced than ever it's "that good" if you are just getting started with Visual C#. The book does the job..

I'm coming from C++/MFC background and wants to pick up on C#/WPF. I used C# before but not extensively, so I wanted a book to help me review on the Windows Form controls. This book does nicely especially with the videos provided. If you have a background in C# working with console, this book will give you a good introduction to the controls. You will be able to understand the controls and be able to get started immediately. The try-it exercise is a nice plus. You follow the steps by steps guide. Overall, it's a good book if you have some background in C#. Be warn though, if you're totally new to the programming environment and never program before, you will get lost eventhough the book says no previous programming required. 4/5 Cody "damda" (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great starting point, but know what to expect...

The field of computer programming has changed irrevocably since the days of line-by-line typing. Programming used to involve typing on a novel-length scale, with millennial durations to match. Today, Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) that require dragging, dropping and clicking have arrived. Many of these generate large sections of code to reduce both typing and, possibly, tendonitis. As such, deep knowledge of these tools has become almost as important as knowing the details of the programming language itself. And that's exactly where "Stephens' C# Programming 24-hour trainer" begins. Lesson 1 dives the reader into the IDE headfirst. Many C# books start with Console programming, which resembles old style line by line coding. Not here. This book dives into Windows forms from the get go. Of course, this approach has advantages and disadvantages. Ingrain the word "24-hour trainer" into your mind when purchasing this book. First, this book will take anyone, even a highly... 4/5 ewomack "ewomack" (MN USA) - See all my reviews, November 26, 2010

    Works great - nice upgrade

Visual Studio just keeps getting better with 2010 - even seems to load faster than my old 2005 model. Much cleaner navigation and work area. Installed very easily on Windows XP - no problems at all. 5/5 William L. Anfin Jr. "a.k.a. Walkin' Willie" (Rock Hill, SC) - See all my reviews, September 19, 2011

    Meaningless book

Nothing about this book is actually "unleashed". This is more of a beginner book that constantly references outside material. Except it's not a very good beginner book, because it doesn't even explain basic questions about common syntax, etc. I'd say there were maybe 2 chapters of value in the book. 2/5 Dan Welter - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great starting point.

If you want to learn C#, then this book's not for you, as obvious from the title.I am a very experienced programmer transitioning from Java Eclipse to .NET Visual Studio. This book has been really useful in getting me up to speed. The book reads very well front to back, and each chapter is coherent.I actually think that I now know more about Visual Studio in a week, than I do about Eclipse after 5 years.I have been building a large (massively complex) application while working in parallel with the book. For example, I needed to add unit tests. Yesterday I added unit tests while reading the chapter on that topic. It made the job a lot easier. The only issue is that sometimes it's not obvious where the command is executed on the screen, or from which menu item. There's a lot in the book ( I am about 1/3 through it ) and I'll obviously go back to it again as I get more experience.I have the Kindle version so I run the book on... 4/5 John Mors (Arlington) - See all my reviews, February 3, 2012

Great overview of the 2010 features. Quick read. Goes down easy.

I got my copy of Pro ALM with VS2010 last week and really liked the book. Nice job.VS2010/TFS2010 is a huge new release and it was nice to have a comprehensive overview of the product in one place rather than scattered across 20 different blogs. Even though I've been working with the betas of Visual Studio 2010 and Team Foundation Server 2010 for months, there were still things that I'd missed. Plus, for the pieces/features that I already knew about, it was nice to read someone else's take.It reads easy and it will give you a fast, efficient brain-dump for getting going with 2010. 5/5 B. Nice Job covering a TON of stuff!!!

This is a pretty sweet book. There are a ton of features in Visual Studio 2010 and Team Foundation Server 2010. This book does a great job of covering all of them that are related to Application Lifecycle Management. The book goes into enough detail to give you a good understanding of the feature they are covering. With the number of features covered to go into great detail would have made the book 5 times larger. I did not read any topic that did not have enough detail to give me a good understanding of the feature. The book is broken down into 5 parts. Architect, Developer, Tester, Team Foundation Server, and Project/Process Management. The book covers UML, using the Architecture Explorer, using Layer Diagrams, Unit Testing, Code Analysis and Code Metrics, Profi ling and Performance, Database Development/Testing/Deployment, IntelliTrace, Web Performance and Load Testing, Coded User Interface Testing, Lab Management, the Team Foundation... 5/5 T. Excellent overview of Visual Studio 2010 lifecycle tools

I lead a small software development team that has significant experience using Visual Studio. This book has been really helpful for moving to VS 2010 because it covers the complete breadth of the lifecycle tools available in VS 2010, which has been perfect for us to quickly ramp up on the new features, as well as the new (and sometimes subtle) improvements to existing features. While there are high-level explanations of lifecycle concepts (use case diagramming, unit testing, etc), the book focuses much more on practical usage of the features of VS.I would highly recommend this book to software professionals who plan to use VS 2010 at some point. Even if you're not working in a team--or if your team hasn't standardized on using these features--you'll produce better software and save a lot of time by understanding how to use these tools.I would not recommend this book to people looking to learn about programming basics or for a deep theoretical discussion about... 5/5 Ed Kaim - See all my reviews, April 28, 2010

    Be careful what you get....

Be careful when you buy this!!! I thought that I was getting a MSDN Professional Subscription with this product, but instead I got a MSDN Essentials subscription which means you don't get all of the benefits of the subscription that is advertised. (For example, you don't get the magazine subscription or the Education package and your software downloads are a lot LESS than what the Professional subscription offers) I'll keep the software because the tools are what I wanted, but be wary of the subscription. 2/5 Grodoz - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) What A Rip Off

Microsoft raised the price and removed useful tools, such as Office. Too many confusing SKUs. Takes up to two weeks to activate, unless you pay hundreds of dollars more to buy direct from Microsoft. Combined with the fact that increasing amounts of the work I do are for non Microsoft platforms, they picked a really bad time to deliver me such a crummy deal. If it weren't for ASP.NET I could probably be done with them for good. They should definitely watch their virtual backs, the people writing the apps increasingly don't need to put up with this. 2/5 Eric Ruck "NearChaos" (Ellicott City, MD USA) - See all my reviews, December 2, 2010
