dslacademy These days, VB.NET is said to be all the rage in application development circles. But is it really? Don’t get me wrong. Visual Studio 2005, which contains VB.NET, is a great product. It is now really object-oriented and that makes it a powerful development tool for all kinds of major projects

    Hmmm......

First off, being an IT graduate w/out any knowledge of VB6 but with C++/Java knowledge, I wanted to learn VB6 with little fuss. Secondly, when I saw this book, I was very amazed at the book's thickness at a very affordable price. I immediately got it with minimal page flipping. Btw, its also my first VB6 book.I went back to have a read. It starts off pretty well with basic intro of the IDE, explainations of the toolbox and so on. The code examples presented were good and easy to understand from a intermediate's point of view. Now, being a complete book, I read it halfway thru, and you would've assume they'd explain some code they used in later chapters. This isn't the case. HOWEVER it does provide a COMPLETE language reference at the back, so some exploring is required though it shouldn't be hard. Also, this book doesn't exactly flow in the way you would want it to, mainly because its a compilation of different VB6 books of varying difficulty levels. At times, it... 4/5 Eric Liew (Malaysia) - See all my reviews This review is from: Visual Basic 6 Complete (Paperback) First off, being an IT graduate w/out any knowledge of VB6 but with C++/Java knowledge, I wanted to learn VB6 with little fuss. I must recommend this book

I have finally found a book that progresses at MY rate. I find that other "Teach Yourself" books usualy stick to basics for 50% of the book, and then dable on a couple of advanced features of VB. Hence you usualy can't use a "Teach Yourself" book as a reference guide, even if they do give you somewhat of a solid base in VB.THIS BOOK IS DIFFERENT!!! It explains concepts concisely, clearly and with interest (not dry). This means that many concepts can be conveyed in the shortest space of time. This also allows the reader to progress very quickly to in depth advanced features, which is great if you are already familiar with VB, or other languages. Because of the in depth coverage of advanced VB features, the book is also a very good reference guide. Because the book is so cheap, it must be one of the best investments a person, or company, can have. There are only a small number of drawbacks to the book. Most of these drawbacks occur due to... 5/5 Philip Leitch (Brisbane Australia) - See all my reviews, August 2, 1999

Looking for a Reference Book on VB 6?

This is one of those book that likes to hang around your desk (like your cat) while you programming. It makes quite a good reference book on VB 6, and it doesn't cost you an arm and and a leg either. For the content of this book, I give it 4 stars. But consider the price in which it is selling for, it deserves one more star. 5/5 P. Pham "whathot" (vancouver, british columbia Canada) - See all my reviews, November 21, 1999

A Great Start to Visual Basic 6.0

I have started to explore how to create my own pc/mac video games. The first thing I needed, and it was tough becuase I'm 12, was a good programming language that I could understand and that some of my friends could understand. I chose Visual Basic (VB). Then I needed a good book that to teach me the language. My only problem with learning programming languages is the vocabulary the books use. As I said, I'm only 12. And I chose Visual Basic 6: Visual QuickStart Guide. This book not only teaches the basics, but it goes through the exact steps so I could clearly understand it. It comes with lots of screen shots of Visual Basic 6 (the program/compiler). And now I can see how easy it is to work with VB 6. I soon hope to make an interesting game with loads of cool sprites (graphics)! 5/5 J. Lockie "Teacher Jay" (San Miguel de Allende Mexico) - See all my reviews, January 19, 2001

The Best Way to Get Started with Visual Basic 6

This book is for the beginner or experienced programmer who wants to use Visual Basic and learn it quickly and sufficiently to develop a complete Windows deliverable system. I have just finished reading this book and am extremely surprised and pleased with its content, easy going style and reasonable price. I have been programming in BASIC since 1967. After QuickBasic I switched over to the PROGRESS data bases in 1995 for large multi-user business systems. Now I am going back with BASIC and this book has brought me up to speed in 4 days! This book covers screens including designing and accepting user input. All the cute visual aspects of Windows, how to use the standard Windows dialog boxes(Open File, Save File, Font, Color, etc.), are all covered quickly and thoroughly. I found these areas to be of particular value to me: Windows dialog boxes, OLE links, timer ( for animation ), menus, and using the standard databases ( Access, ODBC, Excel ...) and especially the Compilation and... 5/5 Tom Thornton (Dallas, Tx) - See all my reviews This review is from: Visual Basic 6 (Paperback) I found this book to be extremely helpful as a novice in the world of Visual Basic. Good for the basics, but just.

Visual Basic 6 for Dummies was the first book I purchased to learn the fundamentals of VB. I have since purchased Visual Basic 6.0 Professional Step-by-Step and have recently ordered an intermediate level book, which I have not yet received. Because it was my first book on VB and I had no experience programming, I was able to get a lot from this book. I have since found that many of the methods and techniques, such as communicating with databases using the Data object (the only technique presented), to be too limiting for good programming. Sure, the techniques work, but I feel that if you're going to write real-world programs you need more depth, even as a beginner, than this book offers. But let's be fair. I'm a technical kind of guy who wants to learn as quickly as I can. This book has its good points, too. It is written in a style that is easy for non-technical types to stay interested and learn programming at a reasonable pace. Good Starting Point

For any beginner, this book is great. If you have no clue what BASIC is and don't know the difference between a module and a procedure, this book is great.Although this probably won't get you at the expert level, it is a great beginning for anyone. It is much simpler than Microsoft's documentation and will definitely get you off on the right foot if you want something easy to start you off. 5/5 "cm364smg" (Greenville, SC USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Visual Basic 6 for Dummies (for Windows) (Paperback) For any beginner, this book is great. Good but not

I found this book GREAT for learning visual basic if you are an ABSOLUTE beginner. Which I am, or thanks to this book, was. If you want a book on learning VB6 without having to slave at it, this is great. The tutorials and the practice software on the CD was also great. Although two things went wrong and only 2: 1) When they start to talk about Class Modules, The last chapter and second to last chapter (12 and 13) should be in the total reverse order. 12 talks about the complications of Class Modules and 13 talks about the simple stuff. 2) This uses code statments that can be used 2 different ways. IE: They talk about "End" and "Unload Me", even though Microsoft never mentions the "Unloade ME" statment because Microsoft never uses it! But, all and all, this is a great book. If you are starting VB right as you are reading this, VB for Dummies if for you. 4/5 0, October 1, 1999

    Microsoft's Greatest Gift

My programming experience: Fortran -> Basic -> QuickBasic -> Assembly Language linked to QuickBasic -> finally Visual Basic 6. I've written thousands of pages of code for VB6. To the reviewer who wrote that Visual Basic is for "toy applications", I hope he's grown-up since 2000. Apparently he doesn't understand the power of this program. The complexity that VB6 allows is limited only by a programmer's intelligence and imagination.I am very disappointed in the direction that Microsoft took by dropping VB6 and going in the direction of VB.Net. There is room in the world for both VB6 and Net. I sense that the intellectual incest of certain system oriented "C" purests went into making that decision. Unfortunately, everthing in life eventually becomes political, especially company politics, and great ideas can become trivialized. I may one day learn "Net", but I can't scrap my existing code. I need VB6 and Net to work together.I've survived using VB Learning Edition... 5/5 Karl J. Hanson - See all my reviews, June 21, 2006

Felt Cheated But I Still Recommend It!

This package is great for beginners and the Step by Step book is great! I only beef was that I felt cheated because I expected the Visual Basic 6.0 Step by Step book to be the same as the Visual Basic Professional 6.0 Step by Step which is sold separately. Instead it has only 14 Chapters instead of 24 Chapters if you buy the book separate! That means No Rich Text Control (can't word process without this!), Multimedia, Internet apps, Windows API and lots more! So I also recommend that you buy Microsoft Visual Basic Professional 6.0 Step by Step and upgrade to VB6.0 Pro or Enterprise! 4/5 "dantan98" - See all my reviews This review is from: Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Deluxe Learning Edition (Paperback) I was fortunate enough to have my company pay for this book for me. Although it gets a bit dry at times, once you suffer through it, it does give you very useful information. It starts off by explaining the environment of Windows and then moves into the program, itself. It introduces all the tools and windows inside of the program. It walks you through the entire process of building three programs. If you show a large desktop (I used 1024x768) and reduce both windows to be shown simultaneously, you can watch the tutorial for what to do, pause it, and then go over to VB6.0 and do it! What can be more simple than that? You get to learn by doing. That's one thing that scored this program big points with me! Later on, more advanced topics (advanced for a beginner, anyway) are... VISUAL BASIC 6.0 is not SIMPLE anymore

If you have been using VB through the years, VB6.0 is simply a great investment and great way to program. BUT... if you are new to VB you are in for a shock. It is not 'simple' anymore. The focus during the last few years has been on professional developers- not the beginner. New users should be aware that they will spend a lot of time learning the complexities of VB6. Beware, before you go out and buy this language, you need to be prepared to take several days just to get use to the programming environment. That's the beauty of this series. It gives you three volumes that YOU MUST HAVE to successfully enter into the world of VB programming. BUY THIS SERIES IF YOU ARE NEW TO VB PROGRAMMING. Do not buy VB6.0 without the books unless you are an experienced VB programmer. You need the reference materials and if you don't have them, you will almost certainly fail at programming in VB. Good luck and remember: if you work with it and start making small programs,... 4/5 0, December 30, 1998

How much VB do you need?

Maybe my first review was too technical, so I'm trying again. It is clear from the positive reviews that this book is a success for an audience of fairly advanced VB programmers. Those of us that are less advanced (I'm a beginner) might question whether the book will suit our needs, or if we are going to have the " two-star review" experience. As part of the code, the statement appears:If IsEmpty(apps(day)) ThenAccording to the on-line help, the IsEmpty function will always evaluate as false unless apps(day) is an empty variant. The best advanced overview of Visual Basic I've found.

I anticipated this book being an excellent resource for advanced study of Visual Basic programming techniques because of Mr. Balena's frequent high-quality articles in Visual Basic Programmer's Journal. He seems to me one of the very few writers who can really communicate the theory, structure, and problem-solving techniques required to use VB's object-oriented, ActiveX, and Web related functionality ... with enthusiasm and great source code examples that are immediately useful.Studying this book and using and learning from the source code examples, libraries, and classes included on the cd-rom is, for me, like a one-on-one with an ideal mentor. I like his tone, his frequent use of sidebar notes and special explanations. He is, I think, by nature an envelope-pushing kind of a programmer and his solutions to many of the ... odd ... lacunae in VB are immediately useful in real-world problem solving. And they are delivered without diatribes against Microsoft or... 5/5 0, June 20, 1999

When my boss told me that he needed an application developed using Visual Basic, I went hunting for a book that would tell me what I needed to know. Am I ever glad that I found this one! I've had plenty of experience with languages such as C, C++, Java, Perl etc ... so for me, most books are usually too basic or very general. This book is an amazing blend of basic concepts and advanced techniques. Never before have I seen an author give so many useful and insightful tips and guidelines. There is so much contained in this book that you may never figure out on your own, even with years of experience. One of the VB developers in my office continually asks to borrow my copy of this book, and he's been using VB since version 1.0!! The greatest thing about it would have to be that it is not simply another book that tells you everything you could find in the help files. It also makes a wonderful refercence. Great book for a non-programmer looking to start out...

I started programming in BASIC when I was 8 (on an Apple II back in 1978...AppleSoft BASIC written by Bill Gates). I never listened to the naysayers about the spaghetti code, not an OOP language, etc...BASIC and VB are the Rodney Dangerfield of programming languages. I was in a bookstore and bumped into a colleague and she asked me if I had heard anything about Halvorson's VB6 Step by Step...I hadn't until she showed it to me. I skimmed through the book and found that there was a good base of knowledge for someone new to Window's event driven programming. I did notice some of the old BASIC naming conventions, which I won't fault the author with. I did get a more thorough look at the book at work, when my friend would come and ask questions about portions of the material written by Halvorson. Take the title as is...Step By Step. Don't let the bad reviews out here sway your decision if you are new to programming...this will take you to an intermediate level and will set you up to... 4/5 Scott B. Excellent book for beginners

This book doesn't assume that you know ANYTHING about programming; it's great for people with absolutely no background in C, C++, Java, or any scripting language; however, knowing any of the above is an advantage. The first several chapters of the book deal basically with using the Visual Basic 6.0 programming environment; and that's a lifesaver. I'd have been completely lost without it. I would recommend this book to people with no background in programming -or- Windows, because it assumes you know nothing; which is a logical assumption in a beginner's book. It is a little wordy, and often refers you to online help, which I have found to be difficult to use, but all in all it's a fabulous way to get your feet wet. I'm almost finished with it, and I wish they had a VB Professional Step by Step part II, cos I doubt any other book could hold a candle to this one. It's worth every penny. 5/5 0, February 15, 1999

In writing this book, I have tried to provide not only the "how" of solving common yet tough programming problems, but also the "why". We include all the code needed to solve many common problems, but we also provide you the opportunity to extend the code with thoughts and ideas to use the solutions we present to solve additional problems as well. If you like my previous work, then I think you will really like my latest book.
