Some interesting changes from the 2003 version

I've been using Publisher since the 98 version came out with mixed results until I understood it quirks and what it was good at doing. I think this time Microsoft got it right or at least close. There are a couple of things that they've added to make it easier to use. When you open the program you have a pane on the right side now that actually shows you an image of what you have been working on, thus finding your work is much easier. The best thing they did that I like is when it comes to labels, postcards, and business cards. They have added the Avery stock numbers to each product so when it comes time to print them you don't have to try and set up your page getting margins right and the proper fit in these type of projects, it's done for you and you can see that they fit your stock using the print preview function. Another change is with the clip art, now it will ask you if you want it to search their (Microsoft) online catalog of clipart saving a lot of hard drive space but you... 4/5 B. J. It isn't perfect, I'd like to see a few things made easier for make web page designs, and some of the new features don't work as good as they say, but I LOVE this program. It has tons of templates and you can download more for free. It's really easy to make cards, newsletters, pages for books, web sites, invitations... you name it. I can insert full resolution photos and it will reduce the resolution for web pages as needed. It lets me add my own html code easily and the new navigation bar design features are excellent. It prints beautifully on all my 5 different types of printer. I made an alphabet book for my grandson and it printed the pages, front and back, perfectly. I took them out of the printer and stapled them, didn't have to sort anything. The print quality is excellent. The file sizes are much smaller than previous version and you even have the option to optimize all you photos and clip art to reduce file size even more. I think this is a great took for the computer at any... 5/5 Carol "kepela" (Chatsworth, CA United States) - See all my reviews, March 29, 2007

OK but falls short in several areas - it is a disappointment.

I originally wrote this up on Amazon.ca a few days ago and thought that, since most readers would not go to the Canadian site, this review would be helpful posted here for a larger audience. After spending approximately 40 hours working in the 2010 version of the program (we have been using this product since the 2003 version), here are my initial observations:PROS1. It is definitely more stable and it is more integrated into the Office suite2. It has lots of little additions that make using it much easier - for example, it has no problems with a bilingual document and switches keyboard, language and speller seamlessly. Changing pictures is a snap and you can link an Excel table to Publisher - change numbers in Excel and when you open Publisher, it updates your Excel tables. Excellent.3, It is much easier to use than a real publishing solution such as InDesign, which has a really steep learning curve and costs about $1K more per license. The Best and Easiset to Use Desktop Publishing Program Gets Even Better

I have been using Publisher for about 10 years and have come to rely on it, primarily for business documents such as training guides and promotional items for my software business. I think that the 2010 Version of Publisher is a worthwhile upgrade from previous versions.I happen to be one of the people who like the "Ribbon" interface that was introduced in MS Word 2007 and has now been extended to Publisher. I can easily find most common tools and features on the ribbon and customize it as required if there is a ribbon element missing from those I use frequently. There is a much improved "File" tab (or "Backstage View" as MS calls it) with easier access to various printing, saving and sending options. Unlike another review I read here, I had no problems whatsoever printing both paper and .PDF versions of my Publisher documents on both my Xerox and Epson printers with zero configuration*. In fact, printing is improved as there is now top-level control over things such as... 5/5 Mark Rogers "Learned the hard way...so you do... Good Program

I've used Publisher for about 10 years and upgraded to 2010 from 2000. I definately recommend the upgrade to anyone using 2000. Although I've used the program for a long time it has been for the same purpose, writing a monthly newsletter that includes text and photographs and is emailed in pdf format. The improvements in Publisher make my job much easier and faster. For example, I can save my file as a pdf and Publisher compresses files as well as the Adobe Acrobat Professional program I was using for that purpose. The difference is Publisher is faster. In fact, the program seems much more responsive than 2000 for pretty much everything I do. I'm not a big fan of the "ribbon" interface but I like using one standard interface and since I have Office 2007 this program provides that continuity. In terms of function, the ribbon makes most things a little easier and a few things a little harder. That said, I have 10 years with the old interface and a few weeks with the new. I'll adjust... 5/5 0, July 19, 2010

    Not very upgraded

Microsoft Publisher is one of the few programs that I have used every day since Version 1 (the other is Quicken). I have purchased every new upgrade to both programs and literally could not be without either. When Publisher 2003 came out, it was a fairly substantial improvement over its predecessor in both format and functionality. Now that I am using a brand-new computer with Windows Vista and the latest version of MS Office, I decided to get the 2007 upgrade to Publisher. I am very disappointed. Not that it's bad ... Publisher is still a very useful program ... but that it is virtually identical to the 2003 version, including the same old tacky and dated 1990's templates. Sure there are a few enhancements, but the user interface takes a step backwards and reminds me of Windows 98 and like Vista and Office, what used to take one keystroke now takes 2 or 3. It has none of the cool and useful new look or features of the other Office 2007 products. Quite honestly, I believe... 3/5 PhotoGraphics (Arizona) - See all my reviews, April 24, 2008

    Sometmes Good; Sometimes incomplete

The book suffers from common "how to use a program book" problems. It assumes you know too much or too little. If you never used Pubisher, this is a good start if you are doing one of their templates. If you are more advanced and are searching for solutions, it is difficult to find them. For example, lots of problems occur in editing and rearranging. Although there is a chapter on organization, there is nothing in the index under organization. If you don't know the author's terminolgy you can't solve the problem. If you are using XP, examples in Vista is not a real issue. Needed information is frequently buried in one or the other of their templates. For example, in editing a table of contents box, they refer to changing a table, but there is nothing I found on that. Another problem in Publisher is insertng an article with bullets; this requires reformatting the paragraph in Publisher which is not discussed. I Was Pleasantly Surprised

After spending days reviewing everything I could find about Small Business 2007... from the videos at the Microsoft site, to reviews from the private sector, chatting with Microsoft pre-sales to ask all my questions, 1-800-426-9400, (about 7 times over 3 days) and the reviews on Amazon, I decided to take the plunge. While reviews from some folks left me concerned about leaving Office 2003 behind after 3 years of heavy daily use, I pressed on.I was glad for the tip about cutting through the clear tape (it's hard to see its there) around the hard plastic package in order for the red tape/tab to be pulled to open the box.The install went great. Tip- if you have a previous version of Office on your machine, remove it from your system using the control panel-> add/remove programs. After the removal is complete, re-start your machine before installing 2007. (Some of the pre-sales folks at Microsoft told me 2007 would install over 2003.... wrongo!)... 4/5 Cheryl Laures (WA State, USA) - See all my reviews, November 2, 2007

Dumbed down and harder to use

The new ribbon design is supposed to make it easier to learn and use. It may be for some new users but for experienced users, it isn't. This version takes away some critical nuts & bolts customization features and many tasks now take longer to perform. This is not due to the learning curve, it is the inherent nature of the way the ribbon works. Once you are familiar with the program, nothing is faster than the old menu structure. If Microsoft added an option to allow users to choose between menus and ribbons, it would be the best of both worlds, satisfying the needs of both new and experienced users. The new version does not run macros as fast however. My recommedation for existing users: keep Office 2003 for as long as you can and consider going to Open Office when Microsoft no longer supports 2003 (unless they restore the functionality in a newer release of 2007). 2/5 Joshua Nelson "Joshua N" (Waukegan, IL USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Microsoft Office Small Business 2007 FULL VERSION [Old Version] (CD-ROM) The new ribbon design is supposed to make it easier to learn and use. Functionality excellent; opening and installing a problem

I've been using the beta for a while now, so I know that I like Office 2007. PowerPoint 2007 is especially exciting and new; Word and Excel don't seem that different to me.However, I just bought the full version and I COULDN'T OPEN IT! I felt stupid until I found out that I wasn't alone. Even with instructions that I found on the Web, I had to call Microsoft. There's a transparent label over the top that you need to remove before you can pull the red tab to open the box, but you can't remove the label without tearing the Certificate of Authenticity on top (which I might want if I ever sold it). In the end, I had to take the point of a scissors and squeeze it between the cracks on either side to slit the sides open.Next, I put the CD in the drive and nothing happened. I've never knowingly turned off autorun (this is a Vista machine). I had to go into Windows Explorer and double-click setup.exe.Finally, there are two disks, but no clue anywhere that I... 4/5 Ellen Finkelstein - See all my reviews, April 13, 2007

A whole lot of polishing make it an efficient, worhtwhile upgrade

I've had an opportunity to use Office 2010 Beta edition for a couple of months now and now that I see the full, final, edition I can say that this is a very worthwhile upgrade. First things first, I am not a techie. I am someone who uses Word, Excel and PowerPoint on a very regular basis, who really liked some of the changes in Office 2007 but who thought some things needed tweaking, so when given the opportunity for the beta edition I jumped on it and have not been disappointed. Office 2010 is to Office 2007 what Windows 7 was to Vista; that is, there are not many breakthrough, drastically different features, but a whole lot of polishing and cleanup to make it easier and more efficient. Overall, the program seems to run faster, incorporates many of the most commonly used options and makes them more accessible (eliminating many dialog boxes and tabs) and allows for more customization. At first glance it looks very much like its predecessor, the ribbon is back and it is now... 5/5 Surgery100 "ADJ" (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews This review is from: Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010 - 3PC/1User (Disc Version) (DVD-ROM) I've had an opportunity to use Office 2010 Beta edition for a couple of months now and now that I see the full, final, edition I can say that this is a very worthwhile upgrade. Very worthwhile, but a word of caution on install.

This is a worthwhile upgrade for me. I debated whether to do it or not and what version to get. I finally decided on the Home and Student version. I was pleased to see the price actually drop upon shipping. For me the main deal was OneNote 2010 which allows me to print directly into OneNote. In December I bought a new laptop and it has Win7 Pro 64bit. I was very disappointed to find that OneNote 2007 did not include a driver to print directly into it. While MS did provide a work around this much better. One word of caution when you are installing. My MS Office install is a bit of a collection. I'm using stand alone versions of Outlook and Publisher (both 2007) and Access (2003). I had decided to leave these as is. Upon installing 2010 I was presented with two buttons: "Upgrade" and "Customize". I picked curtain 1 (upgrade). My bad! The install then proceeded to remove Outlook, Publisher and Access. Since the program I was installing did not include these products I think... 5/5 John (United States) - See all my reviews, June 17, 2010

    Probably Not Worth the Upgrade!

In my title, I noted that it is "probably" not worth the upgrade. The probably depends upon what you are upgrading from. If you are using Office 2007, stick with 2007. This has a slightly longer load time and not much in the way of usable new features. If you are upgrading from an even earlier version of Office, then this is probably the way to go.The good: The ribbon bar. I like it and it is still there, with a couple of minor improvements such as adding a file option and incorporating your most commonly used actions into one place (kind of like Office 2003 did). The look is slightly updated to be more in line with Windows 7. There are some nice video editing features for PowerPoint that you may find useful. Also, the true claim to fame of this program is that it nearly catches up to Google Docs with online options. Finally, this is a three computer license, which is nice since so many people buy one and put it on all the computers in the house anyway... 2/5 John Keitz "Islesfan" (Nevada) - See all my reviews, August 25, 2010

    Just what the doctor ordered

Instructional books for Microsoft Publisher 2007 are hard to find; but I absolutely lucked out when I stumbled across this one. This book has all the features a novice to the software would need, presented in a way that said novice would need it presented:1. right off the bat you are immediately engaged and deep sunk in real-life Publisher work that may quell some of those fears (lied on your resume and told your new boss that you knew Publisher 2007 even though you barely have passing acquaintance?)2. in order to improve your memory of what you've learned, there are notes, tips, and reminders galore on the page, but not in a distracting, too-much-on-the-page way.3. instructions take you step-by-step and screen-by-screen and suggests ways for you to experiment and explore.4. there are even narratives on how to plan a publishing project and,5. So so

Book was in good shape as advertised. However, it was not as helpful as I had hoped. It was more of an on-line class book and I needed a complete reference book. 3/5 George Cheadle - See all my reviews, June 28, 2010

    Not very helpful

There aren't very many guides available for Publisher 2007, or at least weren't when I ordered this. My impression is that this guide is fine if you are trying to do something similar to the projects they are undertaking, but doesn't help much if you're doing something different. 1/5 Thomas H.

5/5 Surgery100 "ADJ" (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews This review is from: Microsoft Office Home & Business 2010 - 2PC/1User (Disc Version) (DVD-ROM) I've had an opportunity to use Office 2010 Beta edition for a couple of months now and now that I see the full, final, edition I can say that this is a very worthwhile upgrade. Moving from Office 2003, this is a really big deal.

I'm coming from OLD versions of these applications. I'm ashamed to say I was still using a version of Word 2002 on one of my computers...Yikes! I've been using Mozilla's excellent (and free) Thunderbird client for many years. So the standout here for me, is Outlook. I honestly can't figure how I ever effectively used email before. If you've ever tried to configure Thunderbird for gmail access using either POP or IMAP, it is a multi-step process (by multi, I mean like 22 steps) to get to the end. Complete with re-mapping ports, changing TLS and server configurations, the whole deal. I could always get it to work, eventually, and once it's set, it just works after that. You only had to go through that process once. But since I do OS re-installs somewhat regularly, I had to go through this Thunderbird "initialization" process many, many times. So I download the Office 2010 Beta. Hope this review will help

Even with the negative reviews I decided to purchase this product because I had to have it like Yesterday. One of the bad reviews had mentioned getting an error message about the 32 Bit Version error coming up when installing. Well the same thing happened to me and the problem was that with my new computer there was already a trial version of this product on the computer so I uninstalled the version that came with the computer then when I went to install this product I had no problem so hopefully this will help anyone else that comes across that same problem. The product installed perfectly and works great. Hope this is helpful. 5/5 marolyn "addicted to reading/listening to Mur... (North Hollywood, CA, United States) - See all my reviews, July 24, 2011

    Worthwhile read

I've enjoyed the book. You can't possibly remember everything presented. I will probably read it again once I've had an opportunity to do some hands-on projects. The book/subject is well organized and should make it easy to reference anything I need to know. I would recommend this book particularly for the beginner. 4/5 N.
