Special Edition Using Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003

Creator: Jim Cheshire, Paul Colligan | Computers - 2004

A guide to Microsoft FrontPage covers such topics as planning a Web site, formatting Web pages, editing and creating pictures, using forms and databases, and working with code.

Publisher: Que Publishing

About this book
Special Edition Using Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003captures the reality of designing Web sites with FrontPage today. The emphasis is on how to design professional looking sites, how to keep them current with effective content management techniques, and how to do both while working toward the crucial goals of strong communication and interaction. Elements exist in each chapter that have been crafted to make your reading experience as easy and useful as possible and also to make this book truly serve as the only reference you need for FrontPage 2003. Everything about the software is covered, with increased emphasis in this edition on advanced topics such as scripting, databases, and the design of site interaction. The creation of effective interaction is featured throughout the book, as are the principles of effective communication. The "Front and Center" area of each chapter is used to interject the authors' real-world experiences and provide that extra piece of knowledge that will help you see the whole picture. They also attempt to have a little fun in this section, showing the personal side to the product they have spent so much time with. In addition to some sample files and source code from the book, the CD-ROM contains: supplemental FrontPage software (a $100 value!), Internet marketing service trials from a top Internet marketing firm worth $54.95, several popular FrontPage add-ins, including one from Jimco Add-ins called SnipView available exclusively to readers of this book, and more!

Expertly Laid Out FrontPage 2003 Manual

The thing I like most about "FrontPage 2003 : The Missing Manual" by Jessica Mantaro is how well this book is laid out. There are many times when a book is not intelligently planned out ahead of time and you are dealt with the obstacle of having to search chapter through chapter to find what you are looking for. Upon opening this book you will immediately find this to not be the case. Separated into 18 chapters with a helpful index at the end, this book covers all the important topics:01. Creating a basic web site02. Adding and editing text03. Working with Hyperlinks04. Image manipulation and insertion05. Creating tables06. Using frames07. How Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is used08. Using layers09. Learning DHTML10. Learning about site structure11. Using themes and templates12. How to test your site13. Well-written book. Period.

FrontPage used to have a reputation for not being for "real website designers". Maybe it still does; reputations are tough to shake. If so, it's undeserved. Let's face it - FrontPage is a complicated program that can produce truly professional-looking websites. I recently upgraded from FrontPage 2000 to 2003 and immediately thought, "Uh oh, I'm gonna need some help in understanding this." And this book provides it.On-line help is great if you know precisely what you are looking for - just fire up the index and type in a word or two. But if you want to learn how to use a product you are almost always better off buying a good book. (Why is that?)Anyway, I really like the way this woman writes. She has a knack for presenting numerous and potentially-boring technical details in an informative and conversational way. She points out what's good - and lacking - about the product itself and related web technologies (e.g. HTML, tables, CSS). She takes you on a... 5/5 Larry (Somerville, MA) - See all my reviews This review is from: FrontPage 2003 (The Missing Manual) (Paperback) FrontPage used to have a reputation for not being for "real website designers". An accurate book title

I was initially attracted to this book by its title. I have often been frustrated and even angry by the poor quality of manuals that come with so many products. It's then a burden to locate an appropriate, well written manual. Some are too basic; some too advanced. At least for me, this one was written at the right level and with a pleasant style to read. I had first read parts of Frontpage 2003 for Dummies and Microsoft's Step-by-Step book. They were okay, but this book was better. This book seemed to have more substance without a lot more heft. And it's nice to read a computer manual with a critical perspective and a slightly irreverant tone--something that is missing from the Microsoft series. The book wasn't perfect. I had trouble, for example, following its chapters on layers and cascading style sheets. Something seemed to be missing from these chapters. I don't exactly know what except that these chapters didn't fulfill their stated purpose. All in all, though, an... 5/5 T. A good step up

I have worked with FrontPage since version 97, which was, overall, a real stinker. I have also worked with Dreamweaver since its earliest versions. In times past, FrontPage has largely been the site management and application development leader of the two, while Dreamweaver was much better at templating and all of the eye candy, like mouseover images, that we have become so fond of using in our sites.Having said that, FrontPage 2003 is a great step in the right direction. Here are my feelings, broken down:Site ManagementSite Management has improved in FrontPage 2003, although the most bang for the buck will be Enterprise users who have decided to use SharePoint Portal Server in their organization. Much of the new data functionality relies on SharePoint. What this means is FrontPage 2003 gives a lot more power for those in the Microsoft world. Note that it is still backwards compatible with frontPage 2002 extensions, for those without SharePoint.BehaviorsMuch of... 4/5 Gregory A. Excellent Website Design Product

Microsoft Office FrontPage is Microsoft's website design package. FrontPage allows you to easily create websites using basic or advanced web technologies. One of FrontPage's major advantages is that it is part of the Microsoft Office family. FrontPage's uses the same interface as other Microsoft Office products. If you are familiar with Office, navigating around FrontPage is no problem.FrontPage 2003 creates fairly clean HTML code. It allows the user to easily use advanced technologies such as ASP.NET in their websites. Beginners are able to be more productive in FrontPage than most other website design packages. If you use some of FrontPage's features, your hosting company will need to have FrontPage extensions installed on their server. If they do not have FrontPage extensions, features such as the counter will not work.Another drawback is that FrontPage does not support PHP natively. PHP is frequently used to create more interactive websites. A plug-in was available for... 4/5 Robert D. Shull "shullrd" (Fairfield, OH) - See all my reviews, October 2, 2003

Getting better, still not there yet

I've been tempted by each new version of FrontPage because it makes many tedious and complex Web site development tasks very easy to do. All that power to crank out high quality, high function Web sites has lured me to try again and again. For example, FrontPage generates very attractive Web pages. It comes with a large set of esthetically pleasing style templates, artwork, and fonts. It also has an easy-to-use WYSIWYG editor that allows you to precisely place text and graphic items on the Web page. If you change your mind, it is easy to switch templates and experiment. The FrontPage 2003 page editor is better than ever, and supports all kinds of drag-and-drop items that greatly simplify creating and using Web forms and updating databases. But FrontPage is not focused on creating individual Web pages; its purpose is to help you build and run Web sites. For simple Web sites, that is good news. It means that someone without much training can quickly design,... 4/5 Glynn Brooks (Plano, TX USA) - See all my reviews, May 24, 2005

FrontPage was designed for Dummies. (Well, let's be more polite and say not dumb people, but people unfamiliar with this product.) And Microsoft has continued this tradition. FrontPage 2003 is much more closely integrated into the Microsoft Office environment that it was a few versions ago. There is now support for cascading style sheets, database connectivity (ASP and PHP), XML, and VBA programming.I kind of wonder though at the thought of a software package that needs a 792 page book to describe it as being for dummies. There's gotten to be an awful lot in FrontPage. This book is divided into nine books. These are organized in such a way that you don't need to read all of them to start using FrontPage in a productive way. For instance if you are doing static (not database) related pages, there are several book that you don't need to read, you can save them until you need that material. If you've made the decision to use FrontPage, here is the most... 5/5 John Matlock "Gunny" (Winnemucca, NV) - See all my reviews, March 15, 2005

Don't Waste Your Time or Money

When I bought this book and the software for front page I had never created a website, was not at all familiar with computer programming but was quite familiar with the Microsoft Office Suite. The great thing about front page is that you do not need to know anything about computer programming to use it. I don't think the author caught wind of that... I tried to read the book to get started on a web page but it made absolutely no sense. Then, I tried the free tutorials on the Microsoft website. They were extremely informative and since then I have been able to make many great looking webpages. I went back to my book to see if it made any sense to me now that I have a better understanding of Frontpage and I still have no clue about what is going on in that book. 1/5 MTtrailcruzer - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Not exactly for dummies

I bought this book after purchasing another book on Frontpage that was way over my head. I bought it thinking that it would be basic enough to begin to learn how to use Frontpage but it is not. It is similar to the other book describing features of Frontpage that I do not understand. I have used other "Dummies" books to get a start on a subject but this did not help me at all. I think it would have helped me to have some examples of how the pieces go togather. There are plenty of technical works on Frontpage to go to once one has a basic idea. In the beginning of the book John writes that "it is assummed that the reader knows how to use the keyboard and the mouse" The reader has to know much more than that to get a benefit from this book. It is probably a very good book for someone with some experence with the basic concepts, but it was not helpful at all for me. I went out and hired someone to build my webpage. 1/5 Bill Grover (Florida) - See all my reviews, January 23, 2007

Website Development with Expression Web 4

My background is straight HTML/CSS development as well as FrontPage 2003 development. I was tasked with the objective of converting a problematic 5000 line FP website to something easy to use and compatible with my website provider. (Since FP has lost support from MS the provider also is withdrawing support.) Unfortunately, MS offers no conversion path. (Incredibly short sighted!!!!!!) I was on my own to get rid of any code that used "FP extensions" as well as various syntax problems from FP. (For example, uppercase FP HTML tokens are non-standard.) Once all of the non-standard FP code was deleted or modified, I was able to import the website into one of the standard Expression Web CSS templates. From there everything worked very smoothly. Code validation is built-in with many ways of reporting status or errors. Pages can be previewed in 3 ways: a) Directly in the EW4 designer; b) Hitting a function to call Internet Explorer; or c) using their SP or SuperPreview mode... 4/5 B. Great alternative to Dreamweaver

I use this product mostly to modify complex CSS layouts. I've found it to be a nice, intuitive tool. This is a great alternative to Dreamweaver. Expression Web is $250 cheaper than Dreamweaver and at least as good for what I do. I'm glad Microsoft has provided me an alternative to Adobe's overpriced cash cow.I'm not a full-time web designer who uses this 40 hours a week, so I can't speak to how it compares to Dreamweaver in that arena.I haven't noticed a problem with slow start time (how many times do you restart it during a day, anyway?) I have also not noticed any instability. We used FrontPage since last century and it was basically fine for straight forward web pages. Keeping things simple for the average person fluent in the basic type programs, Office, Photoshop etc. we created an in-house front for our business, without much headache.Since our service providers were generating problems with serving FP, they recommended to change to ExpressionWeb, also from Microsoft. We downloaded a trial copy from Microsoft and tried it out and with a relatively short learning curve, straightened out some simple issues and used it for the two month trial period. Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Step by Step is an entry-level training book made for people who are able to navigate the Windows operating system without any hassles, but have little to no experience with programming languages, HTML coding, or FrontPage. If that description sounds like you, and you feel overwhelmed by the massive reference guides at your local bookstore, this is probably a good place to start, because it's quick, easy, and serves as a stepping stone to more in-depth training and reference guides. The lessons in this book will take the average user about an hour a piece to work through, making the entire course (11 lessons covered in 288 pages) a breeze to finish. The book spends time explaining the various menu and pane choices, which helps the user understand why they're clicking all those checkboxes. While the lessons do not go in-depth into the intricate features of FrontPage 2003, the most important (in other words, the most used) features are covered, and... 4/5 ghibli99 (Arizona, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Microsoft® Office FrontPage® 2003 Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback) Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Step by Step is an entry-level training book made for people who are able to navigate the Windows operating system without any hassles, but have little to no experience with programming languages, HTML coding, or FrontPage. A great start

I had absolutely no experience with building a website before purchasing this book and using it's lessons to learn Frontpage. After a weekend doing all of the lessons, I was able to set up the structure of a website for my department (a large radiology department), which I've been refining since. I plan to use the Frontpage 2003 Inside Out book to add more depth to what I already know.I agree with the last reviewer that the paragraph structure could be improved--I tended to lose my place going back and forth between the book and the monitor. But this is a minor complaint. The point is that if you are an absolute beginner, this is a great way to learn enough to get started, which is often the most difficult part. Other more detailed references can be used later once you understand and can work with the basic concepts. Not to mention the sense of accomplishment when you are able to see the results of your work in fairly short order! 4/5 Bill Zawlocki "BillZ" (Gig Harbor, WA) - See all my reviews, July 14, 2004

3 books on learning FrontPage 2003

I actually bought 3 books: Microsoft FrontPage 2003 Step-by-Step, Microsoft FrontPage 2003 Inside-Out, and Que Special Edition Using FrontPage 2003.Step-by-step is a very useful starting point, but you'll soon run out of this book. By far, the best of the 3 is Que's Using FrontPage 2003 - it is excellent! FrontPage 2003 Inside-Out is good IF you're interested in Active Server Pages. But all in all - if you want to buy just one I recommend Que Special Edition Using FrontPage 2003. The format lets you learn by solving problems that you run into. For example, you want find out about Banners, the book not only answers your questions but gives you the background and advise on using the feature. And the author is very candid about suggesting when to use and NOT use a particular feature. The authors obviously have used the product for real-world web sites and really wanted to share their experiences and knowledge. 3/5 0, December 31, 2005

    Excellent Product!!!

For the non-web-heads, for those who don't have the time to eat, drink and sleep HTML code, for those who have a life - Frontpage 2002 is an excellent choice for quick and easy web page construction.I have extensive experience in graphic design but have neither the time nor interest to learn HTML. With Frontpage, I not only got two now popular sites running but I'm getting freelance offers to do small business sites for other people.Granted, this is not a software for professionals. As a graphic designer, you couldn't make me use Microsoft Publisher at gunpoint. I'd use professional softwares such as Quark or Pagemaker. So I understand the "disgust" for this product by hard core designers. But I say again, it's not for them. They'd be happier if they stop trying to use it. It's for the rest of us, the average folks in the world. I love it. It let's me do quickly and easily what I do best: page layout and design without the mess of HTML. 5/5 TestMagic Inc. Sooner or later you'll need Dreamweaver

I bought FrontPage 98 a few years ago probably for the same reason you're at this page now--I wanted to start making my own web pages, but I was intimidated by all the stuff I would have to learn.FrontPage is a great tool to get you started, but, if you talk to enough people, and you spend as time on the phone with tech support as I find I have to do because of problems related to FrontPage, you'll hear the same thing over and over again: FrontPage writes messy code, Dreamweaver does not. Why? Well the answer is both simple and familiar: Microsoft, once again, has chosen to create its own set of standards rather than follow those 95% of the rest of the world uses. Consequently, all the "extra stuff" required behind the scenes to make FrontPage work is essentially incompatible with many other things. In fact, I upgraded from FP 2000 because the latter had a major bug, a known issue, as they call it--it cannot upload large sites; it almost always gives some sort of... 3/5 SeaWalnut (US) - See all my reviews This review is from: Microsoft FrontPage 2002 [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM) Despite mixed reviews, I bought FP2002 mainly because HoTMeTaL had just become unavailable. I'm a heavy and long-term user of Office products, and am entirely comfortable with them. Purpose of this purchase was to draft look/feel and content of a new web site, which I would hand over to a professional designer for tweaking.Took a very reasonable couple of weeks' effort making what I wanted. Two major issues were unexpected non-ease of importing formatted material from Office, and weird instability in text/graphics positioning: stuff jumps all over the place w/o warning. (I'm running WinXP Home, in case it matters.) Then passed the saved files to a pro running DreamWeaver on Mac. He is completely unable to open many, and others all seem to have a bunch of Java in the HTML code. (Yes, I did turn off all those unneeded options first.) It doesn't seem to be possible to save as simple HTML files with common code. It's going to cost me a great deal of time and money to repeat the...
