FrontPage 2003 (The Missing Manual)
Book (O'Reilly Media)
List Price: $29.95
Expertly Laid Out FrontPage 2003 Manual
The thing I like most about "FrontPage 2003 : The Missing Manual" by Jessica Mantaro is how well this book is laid out. There are many times when a book is not intelligently planned out ahead of time and you are dealt with the obstacle of having to search chapter through chapter to find what you are looking for. Upon opening this book you will immediately find this to not be the case. Separated into 18 chapters with a helpful index at the end, this book covers all the important topics:01. Creating a basic web site02. Adding and editing text03. Working with Hyperlinks04. Image manipulation and insertion05. Creating tables06. Using frames07. How Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is used08. Using layers09. Learning DHTML10. Learning about site structure11. Using themes and templates12. How to test your site13. Publishing your site for... 5/5 Daniel McKinnon "Dan" (Tewksbury, MA USA) - See all my reviews, October 14, 2005Well-written book. Period.
FrontPage used to have a reputation for not being for "real website designers". Maybe it still does; reputations are tough to shake. If so, it's undeserved. Let's face it - FrontPage is a complicated program that can produce truly professional-looking websites. I recently upgraded from FrontPage 2000 to 2003 and immediately thought, "Uh oh, I'm gonna need some help in understanding this." And this book provides it.On-line help is great if you know precisely what you are looking for - just fire up the index and type in a word or two. But if you want to learn how to use a product you are almost always better off buying a good book. (Why is that?)Anyway, I really like the way this woman writes. She has a knack for presenting numerous and potentially-boring technical details in an informative and conversational way. She points out what's good - and lacking - about the product itself and related web technologies (e.g. HTML, tables, CSS). She takes you on a... 5/5 Larry (Somerville, MA) - See all my reviews This review is from: FrontPage 2003 (The Missing Manual) (Paperback) FrontPage used to have a reputation for not being for "real website designers". I was initially attracted to this book by its title. I have often been frustrated and even angry by the poor quality of manuals that come with so many products. It's then a burden to locate an appropriate, well written manual. Some are too basic; some too advanced. At least for me, this one was written at the right level and with a pleasant style to read. I had first read parts of Frontpage 2003 for Dummies and Microsoft's Step-by-Step book. They were okay, but this book was better. This book seemed to have more substance without a lot more heft. And it's nice to read a computer manual with a critical perspective and a slightly irreverant tone--something that is missing from the Microsoft series. The book wasn't perfect. I had trouble, for example, following its chapters on layers and cascading style sheets. Something seemed to be missing from these chapters. I don't exactly know what except that these chapters didn't fulfill their stated purpose. All in all, though, an... 5/5 T. Software (Microsoft Software)

A good step up
I have worked with FrontPage since version 97, which was, overall, a real stinker. I have also worked with Dreamweaver since its earliest versions. In times past, FrontPage has largely been the site management and application development leader of the two, while Dreamweaver was much better at templating and all of the eye candy, like mouseover images, that we have become so fond of using in our sites.Having said that, FrontPage 2003 is a great step in the right direction. Here are my feelings, broken down:Site ManagementSite Management has improved in FrontPage 2003, although the most bang for the buck will be Enterprise users who have decided to use SharePoint Portal Server in their organization. Much of the new data functionality relies on SharePoint. What this means is FrontPage 2003 gives a lot more power for those in the Microsoft world. Note that it is still backwards compatible with frontPage 2002 extensions, for those without SharePoint.BehaviorsMuch of... 4/5 Gregory A. Microsoft Office FrontPage is Microsoft's website design package. FrontPage allows you to easily create websites using basic or advanced web technologies. One of FrontPage's major advantages is that it is part of the Microsoft Office family. FrontPage's uses the same interface as other Microsoft Office products. If you are familiar with Office, navigating around FrontPage is no problem.FrontPage 2003 creates fairly clean HTML code. It allows the user to easily use advanced technologies such as ASP.NET in their websites. Beginners are able to be more productive in FrontPage than most other website design packages. If you use some of FrontPage's features, your hosting company will need to have FrontPage extensions installed on their server. If they do not have FrontPage extensions, features such as the counter will not work.Another drawback is that FrontPage does not support PHP natively. PHP is frequently used to create more interactive websites. A plug-in was available for... 4/5 Robert D. Shull "shullrd" (Fairfield, OH) - See all my reviews, October 2, 2003Getting better, still not there yet
I've been tempted by each new version of FrontPage because it makes many tedious and complex Web site development tasks very easy to do. All that power to crank out high quality, high function Web sites has lured me to try again and again. For example, FrontPage generates very attractive Web pages. It comes with a large set of esthetically pleasing style templates, artwork, and fonts. It also has an easy-to-use WYSIWYG editor that allows you to precisely place text and graphic items on the Web page. If you change your mind, it is easy to switch templates and experiment. The FrontPage 2003 page editor is better than ever, and supports all kinds of drag-and-drop items that greatly simplify creating and using Web forms and updating databases. But FrontPage is not focused on creating individual Web pages; its purpose is to help you build and run Web sites. For simple Web sites, that is good news. It means that someone without much training can quickly design,... 4/5 Glynn Brooks (Plano, TX USA) - See all my reviews, May 24, 2005Enhanced publishing features and options help get your Web pages online more quicklyProfessional design, authoring, data, and publishing tools to create sophisticated Web sitesWith professional coding tools, write code faster, more efficiently, and with greater accuracyDesign tools to generate better code, or expand your code skillsNew layout and graphics tools make it easier to design exactly the site you want -

Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Step by Step is an entry-level training book made for people who are able to navigate the Windows operating system without any hassles, but have little to no experience with programming languages, HTML coding, or FrontPage. If that description sounds like you, and you feel overwhelmed by the massive reference guides at your local bookstore, this is probably a good place to start, because it's quick, easy, and serves as a stepping stone to more in-depth training and reference guides. The lessons in this book will take the average user about an hour a piece to work through, making the entire course (11 lessons covered in 288 pages) a breeze to finish. The book spends time explaining the various menu and pane choices, which helps the user understand why they're clicking all those checkboxes. While the lessons do not go in-depth into the intricate features of FrontPage 2003, the most important (in other words, the most used) features are covered, and... 4/5 ghibli99 (Arizona, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Microsoft® Office FrontPage® 2003 Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback) Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Step by Step is an entry-level training book made for people who are able to navigate the Windows operating system without any hassles, but have little to no experience with programming languages, HTML coding, or FrontPage. I had absolutely no experience with building a website before purchasing this book and using it's lessons to learn Frontpage. After a weekend doing all of the lessons, I was able to set up the structure of a website for my department (a large radiology department), which I've been refining since. I plan to use the Frontpage 2003 Inside Out book to add more depth to what I already know.I agree with the last reviewer that the paragraph structure could be improved--I tended to lose my place going back and forth between the book and the monitor. But this is a minor complaint. The point is that if you are an absolute beginner, this is a great way to learn enough to get started, which is often the most difficult part. Other more detailed references can be used later once you understand and can work with the basic concepts. Not to mention the sense of accomplishment when you are able to see the results of your work in fairly short order! 4/5 Bill Zawlocki "BillZ" (Gig Harbor, WA) - See all my reviews, July 14, 20043 books on learning FrontPage 2003

By far, the best of the 3 is Que's Using FrontPage 2003 - it is excellent! FrontPage 2003 Inside-Out is good IF you're interested in Active Server Pages. But all in all - if you want to buy just one I recommend Que Special Edition Using FrontPage 2003. The format lets you learn by solving problems that you run into. For example, you want find out about Banners, the book not only answers your questions but gives you the background and advise on using the feature. And the author is very candid about suggesting when to use and NOT use a particular feature. I recently purchased the upgrade for Expression Web 3.I found the black interface screen very difficult to read. I searched for ways to change it and found that a lot of users don't like it but there is no way to change it.Microsoft deleted VBA support in this upgrade. I use Expression Web VBA all the time, so I had to go back to using my old Expression Web version. I made the mistake of purchasing the product instead of downloading the free trial and I'm not going to go through the hassle of trying to return it.I'd definitely advise downloading the free trial and taking a long look at it before you purchase it. 3/5 Rdi Inc. - See all my reviews, October 24, 2009Web editor

I purchased the book to learn a little about FrontPage 2003. I wanted to publish a personal web site. This book is absolutely fantastic for what I wanted. No, it's not for the guru's, but if you want a book to step you through the basics and be useful as a reference, this is it. The pictures are well laid out and well marked. The sidebars are full of useful information. 5/5 S. Scott (Augusta, GA) - See all my reviews, November 19, 2005Gives YouAll The Details
Microsoft FrontPage 2003I believe that beginners not experienced with using a computer could use this book. It includes step by step instructions on how to use Microsoft FrontPage. From clicking the start button to, to exiting out of the programs, to creating web pages, to publishing web pages, this book shows in great detail how to create a web page. The first chapter in the book describes how to first get to Microsoft Front page such as showing what different icons mean and the different toolbars inside of Front page. It shows which you need to click on to get where you want too. It explains how to use a mouse and which side of the mouse to click in order to carry out certain tasks. The second chapter of the book describes how to start creating a web page. It gives you information on planning a web site, what the content will be, how to keep it organized and what it will look like. It teaches how to add text and pictures to your web page. Complete Coverage of the Latest FrontPage
FrontPage was designed for Dummies. (Well, let's be more polite and say not dumb people, but people unfamiliar with this product.) And Microsoft has continued this tradition. FrontPage 2003 is much more closely integrated into the Microsoft Office environment that it was a few versions ago. There is now support for cascading style sheets, database connectivity (ASP and PHP), XML, and VBA programming.I kind of wonder though at the thought of a software package that needs a 792 page book to describe it as being for dummies. There's gotten to be an awful lot in FrontPage. This book is divided into nine books. These are organized in such a way that you don't need to read all of them to start using FrontPage in a productive way. For instance if you are doing static (not database) related pages, there are several book that you don't need to read, you can save them until you need that material. If you've made the decision to use FrontPage, here is the most... 5/5 John Matlock "Gunny" (Winnemucca, NV) - See all my reviews, March 15, 2005Don't Waste Your Time or Money
When I bought this book and the software for front page I had never created a website, was not at all familiar with computer programming but was quite familiar with the Microsoft Office Suite. The great thing about front page is that you do not need to know anything about computer programming to use it. I don't think the author caught wind of that... I tried to read the book to get started on a web page but it made absolutely no sense. Then, I tried the free tutorials on the Microsoft website. They were extremely informative and since then I have been able to make many great looking webpages. I went back to my book to see if it made any sense to me now that I have a better understanding of Frontpage and I still have no clue about what is going on in that book. 1/5 MTtrailcruzer - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I bought this book after purchasing another book on Frontpage that was way over my head. I bought it thinking that it would be basic enough to begin to learn how to use Frontpage but it is not. It is similar to the other book describing features of Frontpage that I do not understand. I have used other "Dummies" books to get a start on a subject but this did not help me at all. I think it would have helped me to have some examples of how the pieces go togather. There are plenty of technical works on Frontpage to go to once one has a basic idea. In the beginning of the book John writes that "it is assummed that the reader knows how to use the keyboard and the mouse" The reader has to know much more than that to get a benefit from this book. It is probably a very good book for someone with some experence with the basic concepts, but it was not helpful at all for me. I went out and hired someone to build my webpage. 1/5 Bill Grover (Florida) - See all my reviews, January 23, 2007 -

Paid for Itself Immediately
I judge all technical books based upon return on investment. If a book saves me time, that has value. I assess the value at $25 per hour of time saved, so I break even on a $50 book if I save 2 hours. I broke even on this book before I left the bookstore. I chose 5 topics, looked them up in the index, and read the reference. I learned something new and useful on 2 out of the 5 topics, enough so that I immediately was able to accomplish a task that had stumped me. I looked at four other books while I was in the store and none addressed my 5 topics. I've had the book for a week and it's helped me move along on many other issues. Before I had the book, I was using online help, Microsoft's materials at the FrontPage site, and other sites around the Web, none of which helped. I was surprised to find that there was NO Product Key included - however that was my own ignorance I neglected to read the add which CLEARLY stated NO PRODUCT key. Everything worked out perfectly though because I bought the disk to re-install files I accidentally removed from my computer. I was also able to retrieve my code from a previously purchased MS frontpage and install the disk onto my new computer. Great Product Overall. ***** 5/5 d4nk7 - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) No experience in programming or HTML? Start here.
I actually bought 3 books: Microsoft FrontPage 2003 Step-by-Step, Microsoft FrontPage 2003 Inside-Out, and Que Special Edition Using FrontPage 2003.Step-by-step is a very useful starting point, but you'll soon run out of this book. The authors obviously have used the product for real-world web sites and really wanted to share their experiences and knowledge. 3/5 0, December 31, 2005 -

Useful, but not meeting expectations
The other reviewers have done a fine job, and I do recommend the book, but my expectations were not completely met.Firstly, it has a lot of repetition, which makes for a physically large book. Maybe this is good for learning for some, but I found it a little annoying.Second, the examples are a little theoretical. Finally the CDROM is a disappointment. Here is why1. It includes "Woody's Office Power Pack 2003", which ONLY works with Office 2003, not XP or earlier. You have to pay for the earlier versions. No value to me, as I am an XP user.2. The examples from the book are "buggy", and so far, I've not found them to work as advertised.3. The so-called "software library" is only for trialware - 30 days max. The sort of thing you can download off the web anyway, so no added value here.4. The graphics library is very small and limited when compared with other online sources - again, no added value5. The remainder of the CDROM... 4/5 John Kitchen "jfk9999" (Westborough, Massachusetts, USA) - See all my reviews, February 2, 2004Not the only book you'll need
This book is more of a presentation on what Microsoft FrontPage 2003 CAN do and less of a helpful book about HOW to use FrontPage. It's touted as the "the only FrontPage 2003 book you need" but a beginner like me would be better served by buying a step-by-step instruction book. 2/5 GLG - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
