Microsoft Access 2010 Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft))
Book (Microsoft Press)
List Price: $29.99
Excellent Beginner's Tutorial
If you are an intermediate or expert with Access 2010, this book is NOT for you. Also, if you are looking for VBA or VB.Net tips, please find a different book.If you are a beginner to Access 2010, like me, this book is an excellent choice. Just download the (free) sample databases used for the numerous tutorials (instructions for doing so are listed in the book) and the authors will guide you through each lesson in a very effective"tell-->show-->do" fashion. For the databases to actually work, you must already have MS Access 2010 installed, however, with the many illustrations provided in the book, it is possible to learn how to use Access 2010 without an installation--I just wouldn't recommend this.As the title describes, it truly is a step-by-step approach to learning Access 2010. The authors did an excellent job of providing very specific instructions to "show" you how to "do" things. For example, the following is an actual step in the section... 5/5 Jay Hatlestad "Rampant Lion" (Minneapolis) - See all my reviews, February 13, 2012Learning Access 2010: Step by Step
This book was very useful. I hadn't designed a database in over a decade, and this book brought me up to the latest. It explained steps clearly, and was very easy to follow. The design allowed me to skim over the parts I did not need. I think the book would help anyone design a database as complex as they need. 4/5 Lenore Hart - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This book really is step-by-step, and I have found it immensely helpful in getting a fundamental understanding of Access 2010.Moreover, an added surprise was that I bought the Kindle edition, not sure as to how good or bad this might be relative to the exercises.Well, let me tell you, it is a WHOLE LOT EASIER to work through the exercises with the Kindle than it is with a regular book, which is always somewhat cumbersom, but not cumbersom at all with the Kindle. And the Kindle edition costs about half as much as the hard copy. 5/5 Lamblion (Marietta, Georgia) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Microsoft Access 2010
Software (Microsoft Software)
List Price: $139.99
From Access 97 to Access 2010
I created fifteen databases from 1998 to now to help me in the office, and one other to help me at home, all created in Access 97. I've been using these databases for years and the largest one has a file size of 60 Mb; Access 97 would not let me create new reports in that one. I decided to try Access 2010 and was surprised that all 16 databases converted without any problems, at least none detected so far. My home computer and office computer are both over six years old, running WinXP on an Socket A processor with old DDR memory. Access 2010 runs OK on these old systems. Access 2010 is a definite upgrade from 97, and as soon as I learned the menu changes, I was up and running. I am glad I started in Access 97 though because The Help resources are pitiful in 2010 and hitting the F1 key doesn't get you much. Creating macros in 2010 is very easy and I like the ease of exporting reports to pdf for emailing. My largest database has 19 tables, 120 queries, 66 forms/subforms, 122... 4/5 J. Whitelaw (Monterey, VA) - See all my reviews, March 2, 2011Better than previous versions...
I use Access mostly for class work, but the 2010 version is so much more user friendly that I'm starting to use it regularly to help create database apps, use it for home organization, etc. In an IT/Database Management class I took (upper division college course) we had older students (50+) who were trying to move up still in their careers and even though they still weren't comfortable with some computer elements such as open-source software, the 2010 Access was user-friendly enough that they could use it. Overall I find it very user friendly and really like the formatting. 5/5 Amanda C. Barringer - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I have been using ACCESS 2003 for several years to maintain a long list of adresses, phone, email info, etc. I was quite comfortable with it and expected that the 2010version would have advanced features. What I find instead are much the same features but the software seems more compliacted to use. Access 2010: The Missing Manual
Book (Pogue Press)
List Price: $39.99
An in-depth tutorial. Highly readable.
Some people think there's only one Matthew MacDonald who writes books about Access, but I know better: I've read "Access 2010 The Missing Manual," and I've seen for myself that there are two Matthew MacDonalds. The first Matthew MacDonald is a good one, the one who rejected the too-easy idea of merely writing a survey of database concepts or merely writing a survey of the Access user interface. This Matthew MacDonald insisted on writing an integrated presentation of database concepts and associated Access procedures--a presentation perfectly suited to readers building their first serious business database in Access. The second Matthew MacDonald is an even better one, the one who rejected the idea of merely identifying the various elements shown in the many screen snapshots scattered throughout the book. This Matthew MacDonald wrote full-bodied captions (in sidebar form) that explain exactly how each snapshot illustrates the concepts covered in the text... 5/5 Bill Coan (Hortonville, Wisconsin) - See all my reviews, August 1, 2010Beginners into to Access
Maybe I have unrealistic expectations - but so much of the book is devoted to very basic items and so little of the book is devoted to software development. Almost no discussion of Access classes or calling API's; only a token consideration of programming in Access. In my opinion, this book would be excellent for someone not very familiar with Access 2010 that wants to build a database and use standard features to enter data, query it, and produce reports. This book is not quite right for the experienced software developer that wants to use an underlying programming methodology to have precise control and develop professional-looking applications that require no user training. 3/5 Alfred (Minnesota) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I had all but given up on finding a book that explains how to use Access that is neither too simplistic nor too complex. The tone is very conversational and the author easily explains and introduces complex ideas without making it feel like a textbook or leaving you overwhelmed. I have bought 3 books over the last 5 years on this subject matter and I did not pass chapter 3 in any of them. This is the best of the lot. 5/5 rogergold - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I created fifteen databases from 1998 to now to help me in the office, and one other to help me at home, all created in Access 97. 4/5 J. Pleased with Access 2010 Inside/Out
The book is very comprehensive. I have not read through the complete book as yet, however, the big advantage is that you can go to any section/subject and get the in depth information you require at any particular time. The information is also very clear and delves in great depth into each subject.I especially like the complete samples of various database(s) as well as samples and code where applicable on the companion CD. With the CD you have the ability to load all these items onto your computer and make the references available at all times. The greatest asset on the companion CD for me is the PDF file of the complete book. As I get older my eyesight is not like it used to be and I have trouble reading many books and periodicals. Having the book on PDF format makes it very easy for me to read.Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase. 5/5 Web Designer Hobbyist "Don" (Tarpon Springs, FL) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) It has a lot of good content. The cd has a pdf version of the book and 4 sample programs. The samples are written in Access 2007 and none are compatible with Windows 7 64-bit OS. I managed to get one program to run out of the 4. The rest still need code debugging. This is an important problem because the book references and relies on its sample databases. The pages in my book were printed in very light ink. The diagrams/figures are barely readable with faint wording that's smaller than microprint. It's nanoprint. The publisher's website isn't helpful. The authors say they assume readers are running 32-bit Windows 7. This should be said upfront in the book's description. Bottomline, it's hypocritical to use Access 2007 samples to teach Access 2010. And, the entire book has poor print quality. "Access 2010 Inside Out" is a 'must-have' reference. It is everything you'd expect from a series started by the legendary John Viescas, who is, in my opinion, the world-most authority on SQL (structured query language) and a top developer. Years before Jeff Conrad started writing books, he was building Access applications and sharing his knowledge in public forums. I learned from his posts (AccessJunkie) and great website (AccessJunkie dot com). Now that he is a member of the Microsoft Access development team, Jeff writes with even more insight. A whole lot of polishing make it an efficient, worhtwhile upgrade
I've had an opportunity to use Office 2010 Beta edition for a couple of months now and now that I see the full, final, edition I can say that this is a very worthwhile upgrade. First things first, I am not a techie. I am someone who uses Word, Excel and PowerPoint on a very regular basis, who really liked some of the changes in Office 2007 but who thought some things needed tweaking, so when given the opportunity for the beta edition I jumped on it and have not been disappointed. Office 2010 is to Office 2007 what Windows 7 was to Vista; that is, there are not many breakthrough, drastically different features, but a whole lot of polishing and cleanup to make it easier and more efficient. Overall, the program seems to run faster, incorporates many of the most commonly used options and makes them more accessible (eliminating many dialog boxes and tabs) and allows for more customization. At first glance it looks very much like its predecessor, the ribbon is back and it is now... 5/5 Surgery100 "ADJ" (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews This review is from: Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010 - 3PC/1User (Disc Version) (DVD-ROM) I've had an opportunity to use Office 2010 Beta edition for a couple of months now and now that I see the full, final, edition I can say that this is a very worthwhile upgrade. This is a worthwhile upgrade for me. I debated whether to do it or not and what version to get. I finally decided on the Home and Student version. I was pleased to see the price actually drop upon shipping. For me the main deal was OneNote 2010 which allows me to print directly into OneNote. In December I bought a new laptop and it has Win7 Pro 64bit. I was very disappointed to find that OneNote 2007 did not include a driver to print directly into it. While MS did provide a work around this much better. One word of caution when you are installing. My MS Office install is a bit of a collection. I'm using stand alone versions of Outlook and Publisher (both 2007) and Access (2003). I had decided to leave these as is. Upon installing 2010 I was presented with two buttons: "Upgrade" and "Customize". I picked curtain 1 (upgrade). My bad! The install then proceeded to remove Outlook, Publisher and Access. Since the program I was installing did not include these products I think... 5/5 John (United States) - See all my reviews, June 17, 2010Probably Not Worth the Upgrade!
In my title, I noted that it is "probably" not worth the upgrade. The probably depends upon what you are upgrading from. If you are using Office 2007, stick with 2007. This has a slightly longer load time and not much in the way of usable new features. If you are upgrading from an even earlier version of Office, then this is probably the way to go.The good: The ribbon bar. I like it and it is still there, with a couple of minor improvements such as adding a file option and incorporating your most commonly used actions into one place (kind of like Office 2003 did). The look is slightly updated to be more in line with Windows 7. There are some nice video editing features for PowerPoint that you may find useful. Also, the true claim to fame of this program is that it nearly catches up to Google Docs with online options. Finally, this is a three computer license, which is nice since so many people buy one and put it on all the computers in the house anyway... 2/5 John Keitz "Islesfan" (Nevada) - See all my reviews, August 25, 2010

This version offers some great improvements over Office 2007: Customizable ribbons and the File tab instead of the MS Button (which confused everyone), combined with improved graphics and font options are fantastic!! Office 2010 combines the best of older versions (2003, etc.) with the best of 2007. It would be a real winner except . . . .Microsoft's decision to throw loyal customers under the bus in favor of "simplified pricing" means upgrade costs are prohibitive! Don't be duped into buying the "activation key" card, thinking of it as an upgrade path. The "Activation Key" version can ONLY be installed on one computer - Ever!! It cannot be transferred if you upgrade or change primary work systems - Doesn't even sound like it be reinstalled if you have to reinstall the OS for some reason. Given increasing competition from online apps and a tight economy -- I hope Microsoft seriously reconsiders its pricing!Bottom Line: 10% improvement - 100% cost = Poor... 2/5 Michael L. The company I work for upgraded to MS Office Professional 2010. "Surgery100 ADJ" did a nice job on the review of MS Office 2010. I really don't have much to add. But what I will add is that there is not a snowball's chance I will pay such a high price for an upgrade for two reasons: 1. I am satisfied enough with MS Office 2007 and I feel compelled to make a principled stand in not buying this product due to the price. Are the people at Microsoft completely clueless about the current state of the economy? And I don't see the economy getting much better soon. 2. The benefit for the cost is simply not there. It's not a bad book. I read the entire book even though I was disappointed early on (see my gripe about the index later in the review). To be brutally honest there are some classics out there that are better, and I am using some of them. But they are getting dated and I wanted to learn some new things and particularly get a good feel for the new version of Access 2010.The style of sample code and follow-along examples is different from book to book. I prefer verbose and well-illustrated examples. The examples in this book are not quite to my liking, but some of you may find you prefer it. I won't try to explain further because if you've read a number of books you already know how examples and sample code are handled quite differently. Access 2010 Programmer's Reference is a well-written, well-thought-out, and very helpful book. Microsoft Access 2010 Plain & Simple
Book (Microsoft Press)

A visual manual but on par for the P&S series
I bought and read through this book while learning about Access 2010. While the book was fair priced and offered very clear images and popular questions with detailed steps. I think this book would be a great on the book shelf to keep near you when working on Access or just wanting to know what features are available on Access. The only problem I have is that the book while showing steps how to complete a step, does not include all of the details. For example, there is a step that asked to add a database or enter in a value, but the step is described as "enter a value" instead of "enter in a numerical value". I know it's nit picking but as I was reading through the steps I was reading felt very vague, as if I was reading a manual written by a expert Access person who didn't want to take the time explaining each step.I should note that I have read 3 of Microsoft's "Step by Step" and "Build a program now" series mostly for programming languages but this is my... 4/5 R. Freiberger "robscomputer" (Fremont, CA USA) - See all my reviews, August 5, 2010Not meant for Access novices
Prior to purchasing Access 2010, I had never had a need for any database before (at least not in its purest form), and had never used any earlier version of Access. I could tell that I had purchased powerful software, and needed some reference to help introduce me to the many things Access 2010 can do.Access 2010 Plain & Simple is not that reference. It was clearly designed for persons who had used prior versions of Access, as one of its first chapters was addressed specifically to this topic. In addition, the book often introduced terms of art without any meaningful introduction or explantion (such as "Objects," "Application Parts," etc.). Even a one or two sentence explanation as to what these concepts were and how they fit into the overall logic of the program would have helped immensely. In addition, the book purportedly offers many "step-by-step" processes for completing various tasks. However, I found that several of these processes were incomplete... 2/5 Evan Haglund "elhaglund" (Phoenix, AZ) - See all my reviews, January 19, 2011A Library Must for Access Designers/Users
Another of the Plain & Simple series, the introduction states just what the book is: "You want the information you need--nothing more, nothing less--and you want it now." That is exactly what this book does is give you the quick step-by-step to complete the needed task. The book starts with what's new in this latest version of Access 2010. Particularly with this new office is the Ribbon, introduced in 2007, and the ability to re-use previous work to begin new projects. As they say "why recreate the wheel?"I do like the brief history of what a database is in Chapter 3 as those who are looking to use Access and know little about computers, this can give a good base for new Access users in understanding why use a database. It then walks the user through opening a database and the user interface. From here it is time to tighten the seat belt and get to work. Chapters 4-11 cover the aspects from base design to the front operation and data presentation. For those who... 5/5 B.
