Reader Rabbit Learn to Read With Phonics (Preschool & Kindergarten)
Software (Riverdeep Interactive)
List Price: $9.95
A good start software & fun for 3-5yr boy or girl
I purchased this software because my kid's daycare uses Reader Rabbit. I picked this version since it was preschool to K & I've got a 3yr old & a 5yr old & I wanted something (for my first purchase of software) that they could both use. It's a two disk set with one for the preschool & the other is K. The preschool has less "story" to it; it has more games, songs, & a zillion printable activities (we haven't done them since the kids computer isn't hooked up to a printer-- another thing they might break). Some games are matching letters or shapes, while harder games have the child pick the right word for the sentence (if you move your mouse over words, etc, the sentence/word is read for the child). Both my kids like teh preschool disk. THe K disk is more story & more detail -- help the mouse find letters & fill in a map. I think my 5yr old lacks the desire right now to sit thru all that, but it seems fun & challenging without being hard. My 3yr old tries to do it, but he can't... 3/5 LAK "lakdek" (Newtown, PA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Reader Rabbit Learn to Read With Phonics (Preschool & Kindergarten) (CD-ROM) I purchased this software because my kid's daycare uses Reader Rabbit. When I first purchased this and took a look at it before I let my four year old granddaughter view it--to be honest I thought it looked uninspiring and rather boring for her. But what do I know! She spent three hours on it the first day learning how to navigate through the various activities and books. I was amazed since she is a whirlwind of energy. Since then she views it daily and learns the letters and words and is beginning to pick them out of the hardcover books she has.In the end what matters is that she finds this edition of Reader Rabbit engaging and that she is learning from the activities and the interactive stories. 5/5 Deborah Verlen "Deborah" (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews, October 25, 2009Will not load

WARNING!!!!!! If you have a 64 bit version of Windows, these CDs will NOT work!!! And there is nothing on the CD that states whether you can run on 32 or 64 bit. The software company does not seem to be able to send me a version or allow me to download a version that is compatible with 64 bit.Thankfully, it's not an expensive software. But still - a little warning would have been nice! 1/5 Tammy Barbier "Audrey's Mom" (Birmingham, AL) - See all my reviews, September 28, 2010Buy it
This was a present for our four-year old and her first introduction to the computer. She would sit and play this for hours if we let her. We had to do very little to guide her, she has been able to figure most of it out on her own. She has learned a lot of new words and her phonics have improved as a result of playing this. I would highly recommend for little ones just learning to use the computer. 5/5 Basar Energy LLC "high and wide ranch" (houston texas) - See all my reviews, October 26, 2010Great Program

Reader Rabbit I Can Read With Phonics 1st and 2nd Grade
Software (The Learning Company)

Phonics and Fun All In One...
We were given the original Reader Rabbit (RR) Preschool a few years ago and wore it out. I thought all kids software was as great; they aren't. I just bought RR's I Can Read with Phonics and, as other early RR versions, the I can Read with Phonics has great, encouraging (non-irratating) voices, sounds, wonderful colors and lots of phonics, words, and sounding out of letters and words alike. My almost-4-year-old has a go at it each day, and my almost-6-year-old loves it and will play it for hours if I let her. I would recommend this product for anyone who has a child who is behind in reading or whom is bored by phonics or fustrated by learning to read; also for anyone trying to learn English as a second language it is great. Or just if you want your child to have an edge with reading. Sit with them while they play, don't just walk away -- tho, even if you do walk away and let them play they are bound to learn, no doubt at all. You'll be suprised how fast they learn. This was a great started program for my 4 year old. I am a new homeschooler and wasn't sure where to start. My son absolutely loved this program and actually asked to do school everyday! It is easy to understand and even my 2 year old likes to watch his older brother play the games. It has really been a great teaching resource. My 4 1/2 year old played this game one time and found it pretty boring. I like the fact that is assesses their ability but the games are so repetitive. It doesn't have enough choices for them. I can't get him to play it again. We also have the Jumpstart game for Kindergarten and he is crazy about that one. I was hoping that the Reader Rabbit game would interest him as much based on what other reviewers said. He may have liked it better if we hadn't been playing the Jumpstart game already. 2/5 Valerie J. Best preschool software deal!
As one of the other reviewers said, there is so much to this software that's not in the listing. I purchased this for my 3 yr. 2 mo. old. I thought it would be a good time to expose her to the computer while she learns. She loves it! In two 15-20 min. sessions, she is already getting the hang of the mouse. We have tried math patterns (red, green, red, green, ____, etc.) for months at home and she didn't want to have any part of it. When the chicken in Thinkin' Things did it, it was the coolest thing ever. She loves the sounds and the fact that the animals all talk to her. What isn't is the listing is the number of titles on this one disk.1. Bailey's Book House (7 games to explore sounds, letters, words, and stories)2. Trudy's Time and Place House (understanding maps, directions, time, and place)3. Sammy's Science House (patterns, sorting, weather, seasons, and habitats)4. Thinkin' Things Toony the Loon's Lagoon (6 games to explore memory, logic,... 5/5 A. These are GREAT learning games. There should be more detail available on this page about what you're buying and took a bit of a gamble but I was lucky. You get a lot for the price, 5 seperate learning games, reading, science, math, thinking skills, and time and place with each one having 5-7 different learning games. Very 3-6 age appropriate. My son who is 4 loves it and I use it as a reward for completing his school work with a good attitude or a fun break. Very cute characters and great quality. 5/5 Andrea J. Bought this for my just turned 4yr old granddaugther. She has been into books and Disney movies but not computers. Thought it was time to introducer her to video games (but not the action type my young grandsons love). She has taken to this series like a fish to water. Loves being able to play the games herself....and also show us how well she can do. We like the games because they have a lot of variety done in a fun way. There is art, music, geography, ABCs, logic, colors etc.Lots of choices with these 5 games and there are subgames at various levels so I can see where3 to 6 yrs old can still find fun challenges. Reader Rabbit Personalized Math 4-6 Deluxe
Software (Learning Company)
List Price: $24.95
Good but doesn't teach skills
This is a good program for reviewing skills that your child has already learned. My daughter can count and recognize #s 1-20 but does not know how to add or subtract yet. The program has "adapted" to the fact that she can do this but then she is stuck when it asks her what 5+2 is or 15-13. It doesn't seem to be able to "adapt" backwards again and does not teach her how to add or subtract. I guess it figures if it asks her the same question over and over again, she will eventually memorize the answer. I would love it if the program would show her how to add using visual cues. It can't be too hard to show 5 apples + 2 apples and let her count the total. My daughter has a lot more patience learning these skills on the computer then when I try to show her myself. True product of the technology age I guess! 3/5 Cynthia Hansen (APO, Germany) - See all my reviews, March 28, 2009NOT what I expected
This program is NOT what I expected, especially that Reader Rabbit is so famous. Like one review said, it doesn't really teach with visual clues how to add or substract. There are just questions and 4 answers in that particular game, and you have to pick the right answer. I thought I would find a program to help me teach my child to UNDERSTAND these things, not to have the child memorize the answers. My child is a beginner, never heard about addition or substractions before. It is not that I expect a program or a game to be my child's teacher, but it could be a good help. And one more thing that dissapointed me was that sometimes it is not clear what you need to do. I had to guess that I needed to click in the window (random) when one game was over, to have another one start. And why is the window so small, I don't see it on the whole screen, it is just maybe half or so, in the middle of the screen. Maybe this is a particular case, I don't know.I need to do more... 2/5 Ivdanaen (Seattle) - See all my reviews This review is from: Reader Rabbit Personalized Math 4-6 Deluxe (CD-ROM) This program is NOT what I expected, especially that Reader Rabbit is so famous. Another great product by Reader Rabbit
We ordered this for our four year old daughter and, while it is probably a bit above her level (she is not reading yet but is beginning to sound out letters, etc. and when we read to her she will point out letters that she recognizes...but has not yet begun to recognize entire words), it is a wonderful program! It allows you to choose at which level you want to begin, or play. The characters are interesting and their speech is well enunciated. The content is entirely age appropriate and innocent - which is rare in this day and age.The directions are very clear and I imagine if I set aside time every day to use this program, our daughter will be reading by age five.We own other Reader Rabbit CDs and they are all wonderful...I would strongly recommend these products for children ages three to six. 5/5 L. Nichols (Vancouver, WA) - See all my reviews, January 18, 2008I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it for my self....amazing!
I am allways reading amazon reviews before I buy products but this is the first time I am leaving my own review because this product is so amazing I got to do it. I have bought reader rabbit products before some are great like the baby/toddler but wasn't thrilled with others. But this reading one, I thought what the heck its only 10.00 try it. My granddaughter is 5 years old, because of an Oct. birthday missed kindergarten so she is in pre-k, this is a little girl who had a speech problem so bad that at age 3 I couldn't understand what she was saying. She did know the sounds of most every letter, but wasn't reading at all. Well in just 5 days she whipped through the first level to help Sam get to the castle, and by the end of it, I did the assessment over, there is one for your child to do so the game can challenge but not overwhelm your child. In 5 days only, she actually read every single word in the sentences that are shown in the assessment. She didn't get a couple of words... 5/5 A. Reader Rabbit Kindergarten
Video Games (Graffiti Entertainment, Inc.)

Fun but too short
I was thrilled that my son really enjoyed this game. He was so anxious to collect all of the instrument pieces rewarded for individual skills. I was hearing a chorus of angels singing in my head - thinking it would help provide kindergarten review practice over the summer months. 2 hours later he finished the game. So far he hasn't had any interest in repeating it. Maybe in a few weeks...One thing that irritated me about the game is that if a child doesn't respond to a problem quickly the lion and rabbit make comments like "we don't have all day". It didn't seem to bother my son but I thought it inappropriate. Just sayin... 4/5 Cappy - See all my reviews = Fun:, June 28, 2011Excellent inexpensive educational learning tool
I thought that I would give the Reader Rabbit Kindergarten game a try because of the low cost and the fact that it is educational. I was really surprised by how my my son liked to play and learn from the game. There are Reader Rabbit 1st Grade and Reader Rabbit 2nd Grade Wii games sold on Amazon as well. I am going to purchase those once my son masters the Kindergarten game. 5/5 Jeff - See all my reviews = Fun:, June 20, 2011Is good for practicing skills, not learning them
Our 5 1/2 year old is struggling with reading due to an Auditory Processing Disorder, so we were trying to create more fun opportunities to learn the reading skills in addition to the typical work we were already doing with her. We thought this game would be ideal for that and she was very excited to play it. Once we started though, we were all pretty disappointed. The graphics in the game are pretty bad, but that's not much different than some of the other kids Wii games we've purchased. What was frustrating for us as parents and particularly for our daughter was that this game wasn't built on actually teaching any of the reading skills at all. You have to already know all the things they're teaching; this is simply practice to solidify the skills. READER RABBIT TODDLER 2 CD
Software (Learning Company)

Toddler Software
The 2CD box set is a good deal given the price of the individual CDs. The toddler CD seems to be perfect for my 25 month old and teaches him computer and mouse use skills in addition to the skills the software presents. The Preschool CD that is also in the pack seems to be a bit of a jump from the Toddler CD, though, requiring a leap in dexterity, cognitive ability and focus. But maybe I'm just trying it out too soon. One thing to be aware of, the Toddler CD does not work on 64 bit systems. I have it running on a 32 bit Vista system though. 4/5 R. This has loads of things for 2 year and up toddlers to explore. Good for teaching use of mouse, and hand eye coordination, and reasoning skills. 5/5 Robert Stansbury "Tech Bob" (AL USA) - See all my reviews, May 7, 2007Great Game
My older children had this game when they were little, and it's even better now - my toddler loves it. 5/5 Kelly Burt (Martin, MI United States) - See all my reviews, September 6, 2007
