    THE LEARNING COMPANY

    Great for entertaining and teaching!

I teach mentally handicapped adults basic skills such as how to count, how to recognize money, how to tell time, and how to recognize letters or attempt to read. This product definitely helps my students attempt to read by its entertaining graphics, entertaining story (I could hear it over and over again!), and the way the words light up as they are spoken so beginning readers can attempt to read karoke style like beginning singers try to read and sing lyrics at the same time at a karoke bar! Any of the Dr. Seuss titles like Green Eggs and Ham like this one, or Cat in the Hat would work well with both mentally handicapped adults, and I suspect, beginning readers of any age. . .. 4/5 Jean A. Highly recommend this fun and educational computer book

This computer book not only reads to your child but also has interactive games. It is both fun and educational for young children. I bought it about 2 yrs ago and my child still loves to play it. 5/5 P. Sullivan - See all my reviews, July 14, 2009

    No value for the money

I bought this for my 4 year old daughter... One would think that a game for a 4 year old would last longer than 1 hour. She finished it and was ready to put it away forever in less than 1 hour and that included the time to install the software. In short you are better off buying the book for your child because that is really all this is, it reads the story to them and then has 3 of the lamest games that have likely ever been created for a computer. Don't waste your time on this one, save yourself 20 dollars and buy them the book. 1/5 Antonio Pinzarro - See all my reviews = Fun:, December 7, 2009

Gramma and Me 8 bits a bit short

I love "Gramma and Me" and so does my great-grandson. Unfortuntately, my computer does not! I knew it was old software, but didn't realize it was only 8 bits (this would have been nice to know beforehand)!I can live with it, but it re-sets my graphics each time we use it, and I have to re-set it.However, if you can live with that...this is a great interactive software program for youngsters and oldsters alike.Best with older technology! 3/5 ShorterThanMost - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) The Cat in the Hat software

This is a wonderful way to get young kids interested in the computer. The software follows the book almost word for word, plus the words appear on the screen, and are highlighted when said. Your child has the option of allowing the book to be read to them or playing within the pages. My daughter has been using this since she was two and a half. She loves to click on the various items on the screen and see the action. This is her favorite software. It is nonthreatening, and fun, plus kids become more familiar with the words as they appear on the screen. Highly recommend for 2-5. 4/5 Thelma R. My Son Loves It

My 3 1/2 year old son is already a huge fan of Dr. Seuss. I bought the software because he loved the book so much and he was delighted. A child can choose to have the computer read the book to them or they can choose to play along. When they play along, it stops on certain screens and allows the child to click and interact with the characters and text. For example they can help the Cat in the Hat clean up his mess by clicking on the scattered items on the floor. My son is constantly saying "Mommy watch this...". I couldn't pull him away from this game when we first brought it home. He still pulls this game out quite often. The best part is that he still loves all the Dr. Seuss books. The software won't take away from the traditional form of Dr. Seuss. 5/5 Nancy Childers (USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat (CD-ROM) I recommend this interactive book to anyone with small children. My 4 year old loves the read and play portion of the program. My 2 year old, who doesn't sit still long enough to catch her breath turns on the computer and insists on Cat in the Hat. As she is not quite old enough to handle the mouse on her own, I click the read segment for her. She sits through the entire book laughing at the Cat's silly antics, repeating words, and humming along with the music. It is the best of both worlds, a classic children's story come alive. My daughter loves it.

Nice software. The reading part is really helpful, the little tricks in the pages are really fun.The reaonsing game, the gift mystery, is kind of hard for my 4.5-yr old. My daughter enjoys looking for the clues but it is hard to get the problem solved. Will look into it myself.Pin the tail is kind of too easy. My daughter would only spend a little time on it.Please note: this stuff does not run well with Vista system, dies all the time. But it runs very smoothly on my old laptop with XP professional. 5/5 W. Li - See all my reviews, December 1, 2010

    Living Books problem w/ XP

After a number of back and forth email contacts with the supplier - it turns out that to use this item on XP, there is a complicated series of changes to the settings of the computer that need to be done. I couldn't do it. And a child for sure could not even attempt it. For all practical purposes, this item is not XP compatible. I wanted to return it - and they refused. 1/5 Teacher "Toby" (New York City, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Living Books 4 CD Pack - Harry, Grandma, Tortoise & Little Monster (Video Game) After a number of back and forth email contacts with the supplier - it turns out that to use this item on XP, there is a complicated series of changes to the settings of the computer that need to be done. Lots of fun for kids and adults

My kids are emerging from their teens now, but I still remember the fun we had with these Living Books and so am giving them as gifts to other younger parent friends with grammar school age kids. The illustrations on each page are identical to those in the actual books, but you move your cursor over just about anything in the picture, click the mouse button and get a wacky, animated response with comical music, sound effect, or dialog. It's a riot! The kids love it and so do the adults. You can choose the option to have the computer read the story aloud for younger kids in English or Spanish. 5/5 beesquare (FALLS CHURCH, VA United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) How to get the books to run in XP

Just in case nobody sees my comments reply, I thought to post this where more people might see it.I received the 4-pack on Saturday and got all 4 books (Grandma, Tortoise, Little Monster & Harry) installed on a Dell laptop with a 7900 GTX video card, Sigmatel audio chip and running XP by doing the following:1. Using Windows Explorer, I created a new folder on the hard drive named Living Books, then made subfolders for each of the 4 games (Grandma, Harry, etc).2. I then inserted each CD into the drive, exited the auto-run launcher (which is replete with AOL crudware), and then viewed the contents using Windows Explorer (WE).3. Setting WE to the Details view, I sorted the files by date. The actual book files are dated in the '90s; the AOL junk is 2004 - so, easy to distinguish.4. I then copied each of the book files to the appropriate hard drive folder created in step 1. I made sure to copy the resource folder(s) as well - right-click the folder... 5/5 David R. Not exactly made for XP

I purchased this for my son because the version we owned was made for Windows 98 and had a problem with the video stuttering when installed on XP. This says it's made for XP but the copy I received was the exact made for Windows 98 version I already owned. So a warning to you if you are purchasing this for the same reason I purchased this. Although this will install and run on XP; THIS WAS NOT MADE FOR WINDOWS XP!that is all... 1/5 S. Sanders "world renowned procrastinator" (Texas) - See all my reviews, September 10, 2009

    Top notch kid software

By far the best kids program I have seen, and I have looked at quite a few.Old? Yes...and it shows...in a good way. You don't see the same level of quality and attention to detail in programming of modern kids edutainment titles.Plays on XP fine, and has a seemingly infinite amount of replayability. Voice acting is top notch.I rarely if ever say something is perfect, but I really cannot think of one negative about this title. 5/5 B. Edwards - See all my reviews, August 28, 2008

    Fun for kids and parents!

We purchased this software for my daughter when she was younger and she adored it. Now that she's older, our 2 year old son has discovered her Living Books collection and he loves them, too! The story is wonderfully written (as are all of Marc Brown's "Arthur" tales) and translates well to the computer screen. I think I get just as many laughs out of the hidden objects as my son does! He was really excited when he found that some items, like Mr. Ratuburn's suit, show different results each time you click! A wonderful cd-rom for your child. Enjoy! 5/5 C. H. A favorite that unfortunately was not updated for new OS

We had several of these Living Books for my young daughter, now age 10. However, Ruff's Bone was the best. Ruff had great adventures looking for his bone, and we had a great time exploring everything on each page.Be warned, though. We had to give away all our Living Books when we got a new computer with XP. They just didn't work on the new OS. 4/5 Jan McAfee (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews, March 21, 2008

Another Living Book I loved when I was Little!

I absoulty ADORED this game when I was little!! Even though I lost them a few times. In this Living Book Ruff is looking forward to his Sunday bone that his master throws and Ruff brings it back. But his master throws it too far and so Ruff's adventure begins! He goes in the ocean, in a cave, and even in outer space on another planet trying to get his bone! He Meets all kinds of characters some of them look a little wierd.Lots of gags that are really funny! My favorite one is on page 11 when you click on the Earth it spins and you hear people say hello on English and Spainsh. Then you hear a lady say "Hey! Who stopped the planet!?" It's so hilarious! So if you want to find out if Ruff gets his bone. Get this Living Book and find out! 5/5 T. If you have a computer running anything but the software listed on this page, DO NOT BUY THIS CD. It DOES NOT WORK. Wonderful Book!

I was worried with the many comments made by others who were unable to get this book to run on a newer operating system. On Window's XP the CD would not open so I followed the example from the software company following these steps:First create a folder on your hard drive called Living books. Then create another folder within Living books folder titled "Little Monster at School". Open C drive and go to the DVD drive holding the CD, right click and open with explore. Copy the contents of the CD to the new folder on the hard drive. Find the file that is the application file (look for the iron of the monster). Right click, choose properties, select the compataility tab, change this to Windows 2000, Check the blocks for 256 color mode and 640 X 480 screen size. Click apply and close. Right click on the application icon again and select Send to Desktop (shortcut). Everything should work fine now without the use of the CD. Do this for ALL Living Books in newer... 5/5 P. J.
