With the release of Acrobat 9, Adobe's focus is all about re-inventing collaboration to enhance efficiency and performance. Some features such as forms have been somewhat improved, others, such as preflight, have been considerably enhanced. Yet if there is one signature feature of this release, it is live collaboration.

Adobe Acrobat 9 Classroom in a Book
"The official training workbook from Adobe systems."
About this book
No Acrobat user can afford to miss a beat in his or her production and business task workflow--which makes mastering new versions of key tools like Acrobat a problem. Realizing that the users Acrobat 9 is designed for--creative professionals, business users, and technical professionals -- aren't going to interrupt their work schedules to take a class in the software, Adobe has brought the classroom to them in this handy, comprehensive book. Through a series of self-paced lessons (each of which builds on the last and includes hands-on projects that the reader can create using the files on the CD-ROM), this guide acquaints users with all of Acrobat's regular and industrial-strength features for creating, reviewing, editing, commenting on, modifying, and preflighting PDF files. Readers who are already familiar with the basics of using Acrobat will get up to speed on significantly overhauled new features available in Acrobat 9. Acrobat 9 Pro offers a new PDF Portfolio feature that lets users bring multiple files together in a single interactive PDF portfolio. Acrobat 9 Pro also offers users a dramatically overhauled form creation tool; a streamlined, interactive document review process; synchronized document views; powerful redaction tools, and more.Acrobat Pro Extended (formerly Adobe Acrobat 3D Version 8) offers Windows users added functionality, such as new 3D capabilities, PDF mapping features, video conversion tools, native support for Flash technology (so users can include video, animations, and applications in Acrobat and Acrobat Reader PDF files), and Adobe Presenter, which lets users create interactive presentations with PowerPoint and then publish them to PDF.

Don't buy it! Acrobat 9 is better
I had a choice between version 9 and X and made the wrong one. I had been using the trial version of 9 and loved how I could copy information in a PDF as a table and paste into Excel. Version X says it has this great new feature of being able to save a PDF as an Excel file and I thought, "Great!" Uh, not so great. Information that used to copy and paste beautifully into Excel is now a jumbled mess. Some of the columns don't translate correctly, so instead of information spread out over 3 or 4 columns, it's all in one - I can get THAT from the free Adobe Reader. I've tried saving as Excel, saving as a Word docx and copy/pasting but each way has produced poor results. I've tried the copy and paste into Excel from some of the exact PDFs that worked with version 9, so it's definitely this version. Maybe there are some other ways that X is better than 9, but this is a huge thing to not work well. 1/5 dissipatedfog (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Adobe Acrobat X Standard (Software) I had a choice between version 9 and X and made the wrong one. Lets face it; after two decades, Adobe is running out of ways to make documents seem exciting. With Acrobat 10, there are three price tiers. Acrobat pro adds the ability to redact information, make forms and embed media files. Acrobat suite tries to vertically integrate Acrobat with technology from Adobe's other products (Flash, Premiere, and Photoshop) to provide an alternative to Powerpoint. Here's what would excite me: If Adobe took the time to rewrite Acrobat from the bottom up as a 64-bit application. I am running Acrobat on Windows 7 64-bit and it still uses antiquated 32-bit code.I would also be excited if Adobe added serious multi-threading support since most of today's computers have two, four, six and even more processor cores.Adobe definitely has not skimped on heavy-handed Digital Rights Management -- the buzzword for its effort to keep you from stealing this software. Adobe runs its Windows background software even when you... 1/5 Adam Bahner - See all my reviews, December 10, 2010Trouble Using with MS Office 2010
When I bought a new computer in January 2011 I upgraded from Acrobat 8 Standard to Acrobat X Standard specifically because the product advertises it is compatible with MS Office 2010 and Windows 7. I am running 64-bit Windows 7 Home edition. My MS Office suite is 32-bit. Unfortunately, I can't create .pdfs from any Office products.I spent 61 minutes on hold waiting to get through to a tech support individual the first time I called. I have since spent several hours with a tech from India on two different occasions where he controls my screen and tries to solve the problem. The individual has had no luck trying to fix the problem. I really don't think the tech support individual knew much more than I did by watching him fumble around on my screen. I think he may have been searching Adobe's support site for answers! He rescheduled for a third time, but failed to contact me. I have now had to reopen the support claim because Adobe considered my case "resolved" since they... 1/5 Travis H. More buggy bloatware from Adobe!
Acrobat 8 has never integrated with Office 2007, or worked right with my scanner, so I foolishly bought Acrobat 9 in the hope it would be an improvement. It's not.It seems Adobe simply focused on jamming more features into an already bloated and buggy application making things even worse. The office 2007 integration *still* does not work--even after spending hours trying the suggested solutions from Adobe. Beware, even for this $300 product, Adobe CHARGES for any phone support beyond basic installation help.In addition to not working with Office 2007, Acrobat 9 is slow, throws up frequent error messages, and leaves part of itself running even after you shut it down which keeps Windows from shutting down without clicking past an "Acrobat has stopped responding" message. I also had trouble with Adobe's finicky product activation.Memo to Adobe: More features are useless if the basics don't work reliably. People don't want products that take 20 minutes... 1/5 EmbeddedFlyer (Seattle, WA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Adobe Acrobat Standard 9 [OLD VERSION] (DVD-ROM) Acrobat 8 has never integrated with Office 2007, or worked right with my scanner, so I foolishly bought Acrobat 9 in the hope it would be an improvement. I've been using Adobe Acrobat for many years - basically couldn't live without it since I deliver 99% of my work to clients in PDF format. Version 5 has been great - stable, fast, does the job. Every time a new version is released I try it out. Version 6 was horrid and a crash-fest. Version 7 was a bit better, but slow and bloated. Version 8 was OK, but did not see a compelling reason to change from v5. Version 9 is the first time I've been willing to shell out more bucks. After a using it for about a month, I'm very happy I did.One of my main uses for Adobe is creating PDF forms. Version 9 is the first time that you can set up a form that can be saved to disk by a user, provided he/she is using version 8 or above of the reader. Finally!! Granted, this feature should have been implemented years ago, but appreciate that it is finally here. The form wizard actually works in this version - saves lots of time in setup.Creating PDFs is speedy and works well from... 5/5 Comdet - See all my reviews, August 24, 2008Do Not Buy This Product - A Nightmare!
I purchased Adobe Acrobat 6 a while back and it never worked (creating a PDF file) on my Windows XP system. I recently purchased a new laptop with Vista and I thought I would give version 9 a try. What a mistake. First the program worked fine, then Adobe sent a 9.1 release and ever since then it messed-up my whole computer. Every time now I right-click on any Icon on my computer, an Adobe Acrobat installer dialog box pops-up and acts like it's trying to re-install the program. If I open the program and try to make a PDF of the file, it says of any file type that it is unrecognized. Also, every time I start-up or reboot my computer, once the computer starts up it says that the computer needs to be re-booted again so the 'upgrade' can take effect. I just click no, but even after removing this software and apply Norton System Works and System Mechanic 8 to clean up the registry, that re-boot pop-up is still there. Colossal pain in the *&@!
Adobe Acrobat 9.0 has been a source of frustration. Conflict between Adobe's PDF Maker add-in and Microsoft Office 2007 causes the Microsoft application to crash. Adobe's add-in is automatically disabled by Word, Excel, etc., so you can't make an Adobe PDF while using a Microsoft application. If you enable the add-in in Word (a tricky process in itself) and then try to create an Adobe PDF from a Word file, Word crashes. But now you can create a PDF from a Word file when you are in the Adobe application! Major heartburn! I wish I had stayed with Adobe Acrobat 5.0!On Adobe's website there is a TechNote that will guide you through no less than FIVE solutions (three printed pages) to help you resolve the conflict between Acrobat 9.0 and Microsoft Office 2007. Buy Adobe Acrobat 9.0 only if you are prepared to do battle with the default settings in Microsoft Office 2007. 2/5 J. Bradley (Rancho Mirage, CA) - See all my reviews, July 23, 2008Great program - works for me every time!
I'm that guy in the office that always downloads the betas, always been willing to take a risk to try out the newest software, so I've been through a litany of nightmares when it comes to new programs and their inherent bugs. That being said, I have to say that Acrobat Pro 9 has never given me one bit of trouble. I upgraded from 6 to 9 so I could take advantage of the LifeCycle Designer to design forms for my company. Installation went smooth, and it's never given me any trouble. I recently upgraded to Office 2007, and both programs continue to function perfectly, separately and jointly. I always hate to see other have problems with their software (there are just so many better ways to waste time), and everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion, but I have give this one a thumbs up. 4/5 Richard R. I am the IT and a small company. We upgraded to Version 9 two computers. Software is fine until you have a problem. Mother board crashed in one requiring replacement. Adobe will let you install Acrobat then it checks out configuration. Adobe nag Tells you software will shut down in 30 days. Checking FAQ you must deactivate software before installing on another computer and it must be the original computer. Called customer support sept 10th. On hold 92 minutes had to leave phone for work then called back and placed on hold for another 32 minutes still no support. On hold today 34 and counting. I will update this if I ever get adobe to answer customer support. There is one big problem with the requirements for being able to use this software. Amazon states you must submit a student ID but fails to indicate the student ID must show a "date" on it. I am sorry but I came here to rant about some bolonga Adobe has done. My last purchase, Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard, included the ability to create pdf portfolios. Apparently, pdf portfolios have become quite popular since Acrobat 8 Standard. Anyways, I purchased Acrobat X Standard after reviewing the product comparison pdf for the different versions of Acrobat X. Somehow I missed the bullet point where the Standard version can nologer make pdf portfolios, only the Pro version can do this. Now, Adobe takes a feature they never thought was going to be as popular as it was, moves it from the Standard version to the Pro all in the sake of making me(us) pay $40 more for a simple creation feature. I am highly upset Adobe has done this.Prior to making this purchase I bought a copy of Nuance PDF Converter Pro 6 because a lot of the reviews said it was the closest comparable out there to Acrobat. I personally didn't like PDF Converter, but the price was right. Yet, now... 5/5 E. West (Federal Way, WA USA) - See all my reviews, July 22, 2011Acrobat X Standard
I downgraded from Pro 8.0 to Standard X, and discovered that to upgrade to Standard X, you need to have a prior version of Standard. I downgraded because I wasn't using the features of Pro. But having paid more for the older Pro version, and not being able to upgrade from it to a lesser model kinda sucks. I had to buy an older full version of Standard to make the upgrade work. Also, I noticed that after you combine, for example, say 10 individual files into 1 file, and save the new file, for some reason, it changes the 10 old files without me having done any manipulation to them. So it is more cumbersome to close out all the old files. Before, I used to be able to close all 11 files with one command, so I could delete the 10 old files. But now, it ask you if you want to save file 1, and after you respond "yes" or "no", the menu resets, so you have to start all over again to close all the files individually. So it takes 20x as long to close all the files. So this... 4/5 Peter Yanagawa (Honolulu, HI USA) - See all my reviews, December 8, 2011Seamlessly integrate PDF files into Microsoft SharePoint workflows.Convert PDF files to Microsoft Word documents with improved formatting and layout preservation.Easily save data in PDF documents to Microsoft Excel spreadsheets to expedite reuse of content.Seamlessly integrate PDF files into Microsoft SharePoint workflowsSearch and reuse scanned content with greater accuracy through improved optical character recognitionEasily save data in PDF documents to Microsoft Excel spreadsheets to expedite reuse of contentSearch and reuse scanned content with greater accuracy through improved optical character recognition. -

Good product, but not good enough to justify price
Before I begin, I should say that I'm reviewing this from an individual user's perspective. Large businesses and other organizations would find the product more useful, but I figure they're unlikely to buy the software from Amazon. The main issue for potential Amazon buyers shouldn't be whether it's a useful product--it is. Rather, is it useful enough to justify its high price? For most users, I think it isn't. Instead, I recommend looking at some other products whose *combined* price is a fraction of Acrobat X Professional. Here are the PDF features I use most and that I think are most relevant to individual users.PRINTING TO PDF. I was hoping that Acrobat X would be faster with less glitches than Acrobat Pro 9. However, it is actually worse! The tools are so disorganized. In Acrobat Pro 9, you can customize the tool box in an intuitive fashion, but in version X, it is so convoluted and I couldn't figure out how to make it the way I wanted. Also the Typewriter now pops up with its own window that you cannot integrate into the tool bar. What the heck? And the interface is just ugly. What were the designers thinking???Don't waste your money on this, and stick to the Acrobat Pro 9. 1/5 ccc - See all my reviews This review is from: Adobe Acrobat X Professional (Software) I was hoping that Acrobat X would be faster with less glitches than Acrobat Pro 9. I have been a fan of Adobe Acrobat from day one. I do a great deal of work in the print-on-demand field, and PDFs are the defacto-standard, and require specialized formatting. I was excited that version 10 was out, and was looking forward to a lot of new features and a better program all around, but I was disappointed. The user interface is completely changed from v.9, and it actually looks like it belongs to a "lite" version, rather than the flagship v.10 this has been touted to be. It took me a while to find my way to my favorite tools, and even though I've used it a while now, I don't like the configuration, and am going back to v.9. (Adobe has provided user tutorials to help you learn the newly revamped interface. Really? Why do I want to spend time learning a new interface to a program I've already used for years?)If you're upgrading from a really old version of Acrobat, then the features here will seem heavenly. This new Adobe Acrobat X is terrible and annoying to use. A big disappointment. My company recently upgraded to Acrobat 8 from Acrobat 6. Maybe there are some new tools that I don't need to use yet. But in general, I'm unhappy with this upgrade. The OCR takes longer. When extracting pages, I get a strange "in use" error seemingly randomly. Then half the pages disappear into the ether and half stay on the PDF I'm extracting from. The new PDF is not created. Be very careful to check before you save anything you do! Guess I'll just have to slow down and be less efficient thanks to this "upgrade." 2/5 Office Gopher (Indy, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Adobe Acrobat 8.0 Standard Windows (CD-ROM) My company recently upgraded to Acrobat 8 from Acrobat 6. I've been working with Adobe Acrobat 5 for years, it was time for an upgrade, but I didn't want to spend a fortune on the new version. This was a compromise. It creates a much cleaner pdf than 5 did, and it was much faster. However there were some flukes (as with any software) romping over my preferences - ie it conflicts with the new Adobe X Reader plug-in for browsers and causes pdf files not to display in a web browser. They can still be shown locally. I simply uninstalled and re-installed and set my preferences again. All in all, it's a good upgrade compromise. 4/5 Vanessa (North Idaho) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Don't buy it!
Mac Version Does Not Support Word .docx Rich Content to PDF
I used this product just long enough to discover that the Mac version does not support rich content when converting Word .doc or .docx files to PDF. Internal links (cross-references to bookmarks in the same document), for example, are not converted. For that, I was told after several support calls, one needs the Windows version, which is supposed to come with PDFMaker for use in such conversions. All that was several weeks ago. It took that long, working faithfully with the call center from day to day and from week to week to sort out (1) who I am - I had an older customer ID associated with a purchase made years ago, and it took several calls to figure out the customer ID under which my Acrobat 9 purchase was made; (2) make them realize that I'd uploaded my software destruction agreement as a prerequisite to the license swap that would get me the Windows version; (3) confirm shipment. The Windows version is due to arrive this week. All I can do is hope that I don't... 3/5 David L. Sieving - See all my reviews, June 29, 2009Acrobar Professional 9 for Mac
I had used Acrobat for Windows for years and liked it very much. A stable and useful program.I got an IMac and the Mac version of the same program. Whatta dog! The program hung up on its own files when doing a search on the same HD as the application. You got an error message when you tried to update saying the original file had changed and that you had to reinstall. It was a stupid error message in that updates created a different file than the original (duh, Adobe). The final straw was that I got an error message saying my original program was part of a suite (it wasn't) and that I should activate with another product of that suite that I did not have.It has been three weeks since my latest Adobe case number and they seem to be more interested in getting CS5 out than improving current programs and making them usable.Steve Jobs was right in not allowing Adobe products to run on Apple machines. 1/5 Paul J. I need this product because of the things that I do. I am an artist and a writer. This product may be overkill, however, for those who do not have a professional use for it. Another reviewer mentions on this page that a serious problem with it is that it does not natively support certain microsoft document files. I bet the reason for that is that most of us using Macs use iWork 09 as our Word equivalent software. Thus, Pages software opens a document file and then you may convert it to whatever you wish. I used to keep Open Office on my macbook but then I discovered that between the Adobe products and iWork 09, I really no longer needed Open Office. I had used Open Office to replace Microsoft Office since it is freeware and essentially the same software as MS Office. Remember, this is a product for Macs and it usually works best to use Mac products along with the Adobe products.
