mystereo Adobe Acrobat 9 has matured into an application beyond the creation of PDF documents. I have never given the product much thought beyond PDFs but with Acrobat 9, I have seen a tremendous number of features that will also change your perception of this product.

    Colossal pain in the *&@!

Adobe Acrobat 9.0 has been a source of frustration. Conflict between Adobe's PDF Maker add-in and Microsoft Office 2007 causes the Microsoft application to crash. Adobe's add-in is automatically disabled by Word, Excel, etc., so you can't make an Adobe PDF while using a Microsoft application. If you enable the add-in in Word (a tricky process in itself) and then try to create an Adobe PDF from a Word file, Word crashes. But now you can create a PDF from a Word file when you are in the Adobe application! Major heartburn! I wish I had stayed with Adobe Acrobat 5.0!On Adobe's website there is a TechNote that will guide you through no less than FIVE solutions (three printed pages) to help you resolve the conflict between Acrobat 9.0 and Microsoft Office 2007. Buy Adobe Acrobat 9.0 only if you are prepared to do battle with the default settings in Microsoft Office 2007. 2/5 J. Bradley (Rancho Mirage, CA) - See all my reviews, July 23, 2008

Great program - works for me every time!

I'm that guy in the office that always downloads the betas, always been willing to take a risk to try out the newest software, so I've been through a litany of nightmares when it comes to new programs and their inherent bugs. That being said, I have to say that Acrobat Pro 9 has never given me one bit of trouble. I upgraded from 6 to 9 so I could take advantage of the LifeCycle Designer to design forms for my company. Installation went smooth, and it's never given me any trouble. I recently upgraded to Office 2007, and both programs continue to function perfectly, separately and jointly. I always hate to see other have problems with their software (there are just so many better ways to waste time), and everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion, but I have give this one a thumbs up. 4/5 Richard R. Worst Product Support

I am the IT and a small company. We upgraded to Version 9 two computers. Software is fine until you have a problem. Mother board crashed in one requiring replacement. Adobe will let you install Acrobat then it checks out configuration. Adobe nag Tells you software will shut down in 30 days. Checking FAQ you must deactivate software before installing on another computer and it must be the original computer. Called customer support sept 10th. On hold 92 minutes had to leave phone for work then called back and placed on hold for another 32 minutes still no support. On hold today 34 and counting. I will update this if I ever get adobe to answer customer support. Microsoft customer support had my fix for me on day after I email them. 1/5 Edward "Hockey Guy" (king of Prussia, PA, United States) - See all my reviews, September 14, 2009

Good product, but not good enough to justify price

Before I begin, I should say that I'm reviewing this from an individual user's perspective. Large businesses and other organizations would find the product more useful, but I figure they're unlikely to buy the software from Amazon. The main issue for potential Amazon buyers shouldn't be whether it's a useful product--it is. Rather, is it useful enough to justify its high price? For most users, I think it isn't. Instead, I recommend looking at some other products whose *combined* price is a fraction of Acrobat X Professional. Here are the PDF features I use most and that I think are most relevant to individual users.PRINTING TO PDF. Acrobat X is inferior compared to Acrobat Pro 9.

I was hoping that Acrobat X would be faster with less glitches than Acrobat Pro 9. However, it is actually worse! The tools are so disorganized. In Acrobat Pro 9, you can customize the tool box in an intuitive fashion, but in version X, it is so convoluted and I couldn't figure out how to make it the way I wanted. Also the Typewriter now pops up with its own window that you cannot integrate into the tool bar. What the heck? And the interface is just ugly. What were the designers thinking???Don't waste your money on this, and stick to the Acrobat Pro 9. 1/5 ccc - See all my reviews This review is from: Adobe Acrobat X Professional (Software) I was hoping that Acrobat X would be faster with less glitches than Acrobat Pro 9. Ugly user interface mars this new edition

I have been a fan of Adobe Acrobat from day one. I do a great deal of work in the print-on-demand field, and PDFs are the defacto-standard, and require specialized formatting. I was excited that version 10 was out, and was looking forward to a lot of new features and a better program all around, but I was disappointed. The user interface is completely changed from v.9, and it actually looks like it belongs to a "lite" version, rather than the flagship v.10 this has been touted to be. It took me a while to find my way to my favorite tools, and even though I've used it a while now, I don't like the configuration, and am going back to v.9. (Adobe has provided user tutorials to help you learn the newly revamped interface. Really? Why do I want to spend time learning a new interface to a program I've already used for years?)If you're upgrading from a really old version of Acrobat, then the features here will seem heavenly. But if you're already using v.9, I... 3/5 KWJ (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews, May 24, 2011

Easy Verification - Adobe Academic Software Tips

Verification is never fun, but I really believe Adobe's verification process is as easy as it could possibly be.I recently purchased the Student and Teacher Editions (academic versions) of Adobe Dreamweaver CS5, Photoshop CS5 Extended and Acrobat X Professional. The entire verification process is very easy and it helps to have your scanned ID or any additional paperwork ready ahead of time. I received all three activation serial numbers in less than 24 hours. Adobe says that it could take up to two business days for verification. The following might be some helpful information:Adobe allows you to install and activate your purchased software onto two computers. I have the above-mentioned software installed and activated on two computers on a home network. I am able to 'run' Dreamweaver, Photoshop or Acrobat on both computers at the same time without any licensing problems. To install and activate your Adobe software on a third... 5/5 171st_paang - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Had I Known

After receiving the Adobe Acrobat X Professional Student & Teacher Edition I attempted to install it. During the install process, I was advised that this was a 30-day trail version. This news was a bit unsettling, as I had already paid $100 for it. Anyway, I was instructed to email an image of my facility ID card to Adobe to receive the permanent product code. After emailing an image of my current facility ID card to Adobe, I received an email back in two days. Adobe would not accept the ID.To receive the product code, Adobe requested an image of my driver's license and an image of my most recent paystub.Had Amazon posted this tidbit, I would not have ordered the software. 1/5 Too Good To Be True - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) warning before you buy

There is one big problem with the requirements for being able to use this software. Amazon states you must submit a student ID but fails to indicate the student ID must show a "date" on it. My ID does not have a date on it and checking with other students from different colleges their ID does not show a date on it either. So if you do not have a date shown on your ID do not buy this software. 1/5 Cherrypop - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Highly complex, but highly capable

Adobe Acrobat 9 comes in three versions: Standard, Pro and Pro Extended. I've been using the Standard version for about a year and have been very pleased with it (I reviewed the Standard version a while back). The Pro Extended does everything the Standard and Pro versions do, but adds in several new features, most notably the ability to "wrap" a variety of formats, including video, into a PDF.So why would you want to do this? Basically it makes distributing multimedia files much easier. As an example, I had a bunch of real estate info including photos, documents, and a movie file that I wanted to distribute. Rather than send all the info in different formats and hope that the person who wanted to see them had all the right plug-ins, I used Pro Extended to convert all the files into PDF format, then created a PDF portfolio that encompassed all the parts. Now, all the end-user needs to view all the content is the Acrobat Reader version 9. Simple to use and the PDF... 5/5 Comdet - See all my reviews, October 20, 2009

Very specialized version for very specialized needs

If you've got to do anything other than reading a PDF or don't mind weird conversion issues with other third-party tools, you've pretty much got to stick with Adobe's Acrobat to do anything of note with a PDF.Don't get me wrong. Despite the monopoly on their technology (after all, they created it so...), Adobe's done a decent job (of late) trying to push the tools to better arm you with what you need to go nuts with PDF docs. You can output PDFs more readily and without as many hiccups from Word docs and Powerpoint presentations as you used to.And, the latest version brings all those tools to bear. But, the key point is which edition do you need? The simple break down is as follows:Standard - PDF Conversion and document securityPro - Above plus Form layout control and collaboration.Pro Extended - 3D model and geospatial support, video conversion, very specialized stuff. So, which one really depends on your needs... 4/5 Grieger (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews, October 28, 2009

Do you need this? If so, it is amazing!

95% of people do not need this. If you are reading this you probably will be using this professionally and you already know all about the advertised features of this software. You want to know how it runs, does it freeze and how much of a memory hog is it. In short, this does everything you want it to . . . and more. For me, the key feature of this is that it allows you to embed video into pdf documents. That is really very cool. It means anyone with a pdf reader can view your video - for international applications, that is huge. You can add photos and much more. The software comes on two DVDs, although the second DVD is only the 3D capture utility. I will admit that I really couldn't tap the full power of this extra add-on. I just don't have the expertise to know what that is useful for.I am an attorney and really appreciated the enhanced redaction features. Those worked really well and I am told that they are more secure than the lesser... 4/5 Just a guy (Westchester, NY) - See all my reviews, October 28, 2009

Adobe Acrobat X is terrible and annoying to use

This new Adobe Acrobat X is terrible and annoying to use. A big disappointment. It's the "Vista" of Adobe. When you launch Acrobat X there's always a start up screen that pops up in the middle of the screen and cannot be disabled, asking if you want to open a file, create a new file, etc., like the user is an idiot. There are only 5 main menus on the top: File, Edit, View, Window, and Help. Acrobat 9 has 10 menu choices. Gone from the main menu on top are Document, Comments, Forms, Tools, Advanced, and Plug-Ins. They were all moved to the new right side panel you have to open up everytime you want to do something and takes up space and covers up the PDF.The Find box is gone from the top. Now you have to hit "Ctrl F" and a small little box appears on the right of the screen to type in the text in. Inexcusable for a 20-year User of Adobe Products

I have been a user of Adobe products for 20 years. I have upgraded my Creative Suites from its origin to its current CS5 Design Premium. I have recently had trouble installing updates to Illustrator -- and after 6 hours with customer service and technical support was told to uninstall and reinstall, which I did and did NOT solve the problem. They have no answer. I was having the same problem with Acrobat 9 Pro and spent additional WASTED hours. Finally, I decided to upgrade to Acrobat X Pro. I purchased it from Amazon. I tried to install it on my laptop, put in the X serial number and copied the 9 serial number from my registration page at Adobe -- and it did not recognize my serial number as valid. So deleted the 9 serial number and typed it in exactly as it was on the Adobe registration page -- and still not a valid serial number! I finally called Adobe customer service, who could do nothing, and transferred me to technical support. I bought and installed this program, Acrobat X Pro Upgrade, with NO problems. I upgraded from Acrobat 9 Pro FULL version on a Win7 Pro virtual machine running on my Apple iMac i7. You must first uninstall any previous version of Acrobat prior to installing ver X. More buggy bloatware from Adobe!

Acrobat 8 has never integrated with Office 2007, or worked right with my scanner, so I foolishly bought Acrobat 9 in the hope it would be an improvement. It's not.It seems Adobe simply focused on jamming more features into an already bloated and buggy application making things even worse. Beware, even for this $300 product, Adobe CHARGES for any phone support beyond basic installation help.In addition to not working with Office 2007, Acrobat 9 is slow, throws up frequent error messages, and leaves part of itself running even after you shut it down which keeps Windows from shutting down without clicking past an "Acrobat has stopped responding" message. First worthy upgrade since version 5.0

I've been using Adobe Acrobat for many years - basically couldn't live without it since I deliver 99% of my work to clients in PDF format. Version 5 has been great - stable, fast, does the job. Every time a new version is released I try it out. Version 6 was horrid and a crash-fest. Version 7 was a bit better, but slow and bloated. Version 8 was OK, but did not see a compelling reason to change from v5. Version 9 is the first time I've been willing to shell out more bucks. After a using it for about a month, I'm very happy I did.One of my main uses for Adobe is creating PDF forms. Version 9 is the first time that you can set up a form that can be saved to disk by a user, provided he/she is using version 8 or above of the reader. Finally!! Granted, this feature should have been implemented years ago, but appreciate that it is finally here. The form wizard actually works in this version - saves lots of time in setup.Creating PDFs is speedy and works well from... 5/5 Comdet - See all my reviews, August 24, 2008

Do Not Buy This Product - A Nightmare!

I purchased Adobe Acrobat 6 a while back and it never worked (creating a PDF file) on my Windows XP system. I recently purchased a new laptop with Vista and I thought I would give version 9 a try. What a mistake. First the program worked fine, then Adobe sent a 9.1 release and ever since then it messed-up my whole computer. Also, every time I start-up or reboot my computer, once the computer starts up it says that the computer needs to be re-booted again so the 'upgrade' can take effect. I just click no, but even after removing this software and apply Norton System Works and System Mechanic 8 to clean up the registry, that re-boot pop-up is still there. I've now have two bad experiences with this program in... Read more Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , April 15, 2009

Mac Version Does Not Support Word .docx Rich Content to PDF

I used this product just long enough to discover that the Mac version does not support rich content when converting Word .doc or .docx files to PDF. Internal links (cross-references to bookmarks in the same document), for example, are not converted. For that, I was told after several support calls, one needs the Windows version, which is supposed to come with PDFMaker for use in such conversions. All that was several weeks ago. It took that long, working faithfully with the call center from day to day and from week to week to sort out (1) who I am - I had an older customer ID associated with a purchase made years ago, and it took several calls to figure out the customer ID under which my Acrobat 9 purchase was made; (2) make them realize that I'd uploaded my software destruction agreement as a prerequisite to the license swap that would get me the Windows version; (3) confirm shipment. The Windows version is due to arrive this week. All I can do is hope that I don't... 3/5 David L. Sieving - See all my reviews, June 29, 2009

    Acrobar Professional 9 for Mac

I had used Acrobat for Windows for years and liked it very much. A stable and useful program.I got an IMac and the Mac version of the same program. Whatta dog! The program hung up on its own files when doing a search on the same HD as the application. You got an error message when you tried to update saying the original file had changed and that you had to reinstall. It was a stupid error message in that updates created a different file than the original (duh, Adobe). The final straw was that I got an error message saying my original program was part of a suite (it wasn't) and that I should activate with another product of that suite that I did not have.It has been three weeks since my latest Adobe case number and they seem to be more interested in getting CS5 out than improving current programs and making them usable.Steve Jobs was right in not allowing Adobe products to run on Apple machines. 1/5 Paul J. As Writer & Artist, I Use It Daily WITH Mac's iWork 09

I need this product because of the things that I do. I am an artist and a writer. This product may be overkill, however, for those who do not have a professional use for it. Another reviewer mentions on this page that a serious problem with it is that it does not natively support certain microsoft document files. I bet the reason for that is that most of us using Macs use iWork 09 as our Word equivalent software. Thus, Pages software opens a document file and then you may convert it to whatever you wish. I used to keep Open Office on my macbook but then I discovered that between the Adobe products and iWork 09, I really no longer needed Open Office. I had used Open Office to replace Microsoft Office since it is freeware and essentially the same software as MS Office. Remember, this is a product for Macs and it usually works best to use Mac products along with the Adobe products. The first reviewer covers all the things this product does very, very well so I will not reiterate... 5/5 carol irvin "carol irvin" (United States) - See all my reviews, August 23, 2009

Don't buy it! Acrobat 9 is better

I had a choice between version 9 and X and made the wrong one. I had been using the trial version of 9 and loved how I could copy information in a PDF as a table and paste into Excel. Version X says it has this great new feature of being able to save a PDF as an Excel file and I thought, "Great!" Uh, not so great. Information that used to copy and paste beautifully into Excel is now a jumbled mess. Some of the columns don't translate correctly, so instead of information spread out over 3 or 4 columns, it's all in one - I can get THAT from the free Adobe Reader. I've tried saving as Excel, saving as a Word docx and copy/pasting but each way has produced poor results. I've tried the copy and paste into Excel from some of the exact PDFs that worked with version 9, so it's definitely this version. Maybe there are some other ways that X is better than 9, but this is a huge thing to not work well. 1/5 dissipatedfog (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Adobe Acrobat X Standard (Software) I had a choice between version 9 and X and made the wrong one. Party Like It's 1999

Lets face it; after two decades, Adobe is running out of ways to make documents seem exciting. With Acrobat 10, there are three price tiers. Acrobat pro adds the ability to redact information, make forms and embed media files. Acrobat suite tries to vertically integrate Acrobat with technology from Adobe's other products (Flash, Premiere, and Photoshop) to provide an alternative to Powerpoint. Here's what would excite me: If Adobe took the time to rewrite Acrobat from the bottom up as a 64-bit application. I am running Acrobat on Windows 7 64-bit and it still uses antiquated 32-bit code.I would also be excited if Adobe added serious multi-threading support since most of today's computers have two, four, six and even more processor cores.Adobe definitely has not skimped on heavy-handed Digital Rights Management -- the buzzword for its effort to keep you from stealing this software. Adobe runs its Windows background software even when you... 1/5 Adam Bahner - See all my reviews, December 10, 2010

Trouble Using with MS Office 2010

When I bought a new computer in January 2011 I upgraded from Acrobat 8 Standard to Acrobat X Standard specifically because the product advertises it is compatible with MS Office 2010 and Windows 7. I am running 64-bit Windows 7 Home edition. My MS Office suite is 32-bit. Unfortunately, I can't create .pdfs from any Office products.I spent 61 minutes on hold waiting to get through to a tech support individual the first time I called. I have since spent several hours with a tech from India on two different occasions where he controls my screen and tries to solve the problem. The individual has had no luck trying to fix the problem. I really don't think the tech support individual knew much more than I did by watching him fumble around on my screen. I think he may have been searching Adobe's support site for answers! He rescheduled for a third time, but failed to contact me. I have now had to reopen the support claim because Adobe considered my case "resolved" since they... 1/5 Travis H. Long (CA) - See all my reviews, February 28, 2011

    A useful upgrade

I'm not sure why so many people are complaining that Adobe Acrobat X is worse than its predecessors. Some of the comments seem frivolous. I upgraded from Acrobat 7 and have found Acrobat X to be a much needed improvement. Here are a few features I particularly like:1) I use OCR text recognition a lot so I can work on scanned articles. On older versions, this would bog down my computer and slow it down significantly. Now, the process is both quicker and less burdensome on the hard drive.2) Acrobat X allows for more options with the icons. You can have a 1-click icon for OCR recognition, and rearrange them.3) Making portfolios of documents is both easier to do and to customize. I had never bothered to learn this feature on previous versions, but since it's so easy I might just use it.4) I like the integration with web browsers, particularly Safari. Loading a pdf in the browser gives a clear image of the document, with a toolbar near the... 5/5 Enjolras (Springfield, MA) - See all my reviews, January 22, 2011
