ACT! 2010 may finally get it right

I would like to tell you about my experiences with ACT! but also provide some additional information about this program since there seems to be a lot of MIS-Information flying around. I do not work for this company and am not affiliated with Sage in any way. I am just a user. I have written database applications in the past.I have been an ACT! 3.0 and then ACT! 6.0 version(s) user for a number of years. When I tried to upgrade to ACT!2006 there were some problems. I decided not to upgrade and wait until the problems were resolved. I recently purchased ACT! 2010 and am fairly happy with it.These types of programs like ACT! are database applications. They are written using a database engine that lies beneath the surface of the part the user sees. This engine could be MS Access, MS FoxPro, R:BASE or some other program. Up until about 2004, ACT! was based on a MS FoxPro engine. In this situation, the database and the underlining engine are essentially one program... 4/5 Bob Lewis "bobzt" (Farmingdale, NY USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Act By Sage 2010 [Old Version] (DVD-ROM) I would like to tell you about my experiences with ACT! but also provide some additional information about this program since there seems to be a lot of MIS-Information flying around. Worst Act! ever

I recently purchased the new ACT! 2010 edition with high hopes that this would be a great new upgrade from previous editions. I have been an early adopter of ACT, having first used the product in 1987 and have used subsequent versions since. I stopped using ACT when they wouldn't run on Vista when Vista first came out. At the time, I was surprised that a company like Sage would not have properly planned for the launch of Vista to at least have a product that would work with it.Fast forward to now and my latest experience with ACT! 2010. What a disaster! At first, the downloaded version seemed to install correctly. But then I wanted to link my Outlook database with ACT and that didn't work properly. Simple fields like "State" and "ZIP" were incorrectly matched so that "State" showed up under the "City" field in ACT and "ZIP" showed up in the "State" field. Then another problem happened. I opened up my Outlook 2007 program and found a major fault. In short, Outlook was... 1/5 Gary M. Sheppard (Granbury, TX USA) - See all my reviews, October 15, 2009

Act! Works Well. Works as advertized.

I used Act! Version 1 over 20 years ago and it worked well. Switched to Goldmine version 4.0 and then version 5.7 about 10 years ago hoping it would have better synchronization with other users, and because it easily imported Act Databases. Became disatisfied with difficulty in customizing Goldmine. Then Goldmine abandoned support for single users. Stayed with Goldmine longer than I wanted because it was difficult to export 10 years of client data to another program because of Goldmine's complicated structure of its data tables. Finally ACT! made available Migrate Admin 2010, a program that made it easy to export all Goldmine data into Act!2010. The migration program cost a steep $300, but the hours of time and data it saved was worth it for a once in a decade data conversion. The migration worked well. I am not an IT person but I am a "hands on" user. ACT! 2010 works well. It is easily customizable. It requires more RAM memory than Goldmine to work well. It works fine on my desktop... 5/5 Clam80 "Clam80" (New York) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Act By Sage 2010 [Old Version] (DVD-ROM) I used Act! Easy load/convert on Win7 64 bit

We upgraded from a crashed Dell with Win XP to a new HP with Win7 64 bit. We had been running Act 6.0 for years for my wife's small business, but it won't load in 64 bit OSs. So, we bought Act2011 Pro despite the bad reviews here, since there was a 30 day trial period. We never had any version of Act on the new computer previously, and we did have Office 2003 loaded first. Our DB was backed up on an external drive. The load was absolutely smooth from the DVD. It took about 15 min mostly loading SQL server 2008 related files. Then we converted our old DB by simply trying to open it and answering a few questions. We did have redefined user fields in our old DB and were concerned with possibly losing them. No worry, everything converted to the new DB fine. Upon opening the "contact" view we noticed our user fields were not there. It took a few minutes to realize they were shown in the lower half of the screen as "user fields." The data was correct but the field names were lost. It just... 4/5 D. Stanhope (Tampa, FL USA) - See all my reviews, January 16, 2011

    Decent product, HORRIBLE customer service!!!

I have used Sage ACT! 2009, 2010, and 2011. The product is a pretty good product, not very expensive, and customizable. I just purchased ACT! 2011 yesterday and have returned it today.Sage is a horrible company to deal with! They push you in circles when you call for customer support. There will be a reason you have to contact customer support at some point in time....leave at least 2 hours in your schedule when you contact them. This was the third time I had an issue and each time took 2 hours to correct a simple issue. I don't care that I had to call, but I care that they obviously push people in circles and put them on hold for 20 minutes in hopes that they will hang up. Chat representatives take several minutes to respond to everything you type and phone reps are impossible to understand, unless you call the sales department which is obviously located in the United States. 2 hours of your time is worth more than the price of this product.Beware of... 1/5 Thurston217 - See all my reviews This review is from: Sage ACT! Believe The Other Reviews

I had been loyally using ACT since 1997. I recently had to upgrade my system and then found that I had to convert my ACT program that I had purchased in 2006 to this new Sage Act Pro 2011. Along with a bunch of unnecessary changes that not user friendly as well as difficult on the eyes, the customer service is perhaps the worst I have ever experienced in my professional career. I lost a good amount of my previous data with this conversion and the "support staff" is in no way helpful. One even said that I wasn't eligible for support THE DAY AFTER I PURCHASED THE PROGRAM AND WANTED ME TO PAY FOR SUPPORT ELIGIBILITY. Don't waste your time or money. There is nothing to recommend about this program. The only reason I rated it one star is because their is no way to rate it zero. Goodbye ACT, I am ACTively working on replacing you. 1/5 willy 575 "willy575" - See all my reviews This review is from: Sage ACT! Score More Points With Cracking...

Having had to retake the ACT after 18 years, needless to say I needed help. Bought three books: Cracking the ACT Princeton 2003 edition, The ACT for Dummies, and The Real ACT Prep Guide. Went through all of these books. The one that worked best for me was Cracking. It gave practical advise on how to improve my scores. Tactics were what it was all about. Although knowing math equations may be needed by some people in the future, for me it was getting a higher score. This book did the trick. The other two books helped as well. Ranked in order of importance: 1. Cracking 2. ACT for Dummies 3. The Real ACT. The last one has three practice tests. So if you want to practice taking the test I recommend it. DO NOT READ THE PREP PART OF THIS BOOK!!! It is not a helpful study guide. The ACT for Dummies was pretty good about giving some hard material that you need to know. But I preferred to use the tactics provided by Cracking. All in all, if you are going to buy one... 5/5 Jarrod C. Turner - See all my reviews, February 20, 2010

Good starting book, but there are some errors

I am a private math tutor and author of Math Study Guide for the SAT, ACT and SAT Subject Tests: 2012 Edition. I sometimes use the practice tests in this book as a warm up for students and then follow it with the official practice tests found in . However I found two errors in the math tests in this book:pg 445 problem 39. The answer is C, not H.pg 453 problem 58. The answer is -12/5. An ACT Prep Must Have!

As an ACT Tutor, I have found this book most helpful to use with my students. From math strategies to punctuation technicalities, this book covers it all. The Science section is extensive, and very helpful as it is bursting with strategies. The practice tests provided in the book are of moderate difficulty. I recommend this resource to any student who wants to be prepared for all 5 test sections and get inside the heads, per say, of the test writers. As the ACT is very time pressured, learning Princeton Review's strategies would be very beneficial to students. I also recommend this resource to any tutor or parent that is looking to help a student prep for the ACT exam. ACT prep can be rather arduous, but is always rewarding--good luck!Stacy Padula, Author of 5/5 S. Padula "Child of God" (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews, June 1, 2010

    STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROGRAM

I unfortunately started with ACT! 2006!, and upgraded from there one. Every year since then a new version came out at about $100+ for the upgrade, and instead of cutting my losses, I purchased each upgrade. about $800 dollars later, I've had enough. Please note that I have never written reviews, but became so jaded about this program that I felt I had no other choice. Also, please note that I use act on my computer and my assistants. This program is horrendous. It is extremely slow, crashes constantly, and has tons of error messages. I remember upgrading to 2009 just so that I could get another few months of tech support. It seemed as if the upgrade cost would make sense, considering their crappy support charges by the minute. Anyway it wasn't and now I am looking into getting my database converted (my biggest issues being the notes) at this I don't care how much I spend on the conversion, or even If I have to retype all my notes over. I wish I'd read these reviews before I bought... ACT! is dreadful

After 19 years in the IT industry I thought I knew how to pick good software... ACT! seemed safe enough; it's been around forever so they *must* have worked the bugs out, right? Very professional packaging, sold everywhere, all the 'safety' signs are there...Well I was wrong. Another review called ACT! It would be both cheaper and more legible. Then there's the debacle over Windows Update - ACT is written so badly that when Windows Update did its thing, ACT had a hissy fit and... 1/5 Ulrich von Bek - See all my reviews This review is from: ACT! by Sage 2009 (11.0) [Old Version] (CD-ROM) After 19 years in the IT industry I thought I knew how to pick good software... I've tried several brands many not living up to performance needs including the original pads. I tested Bendix which had no shims included, then TRW semi metallic pads that work very well for bite but were way too aggressive and grooved the Honda rotors. The Akebono pads are smoother and have the right amount of bite around town and noticeably less aggressive on rotors. They are far better than the absolute junk Honda brake pads that did not have enough bite to even clear surface rust after washing the car; apparently in USA, Honda has a new specification, but Australia does not. The pad kit also includes Moly lube which is specified by Honda on backing plates. Still need a few months to really tell if they will be replaced with the same but so far I do like these. They are fitted with new rotors which is always recommended. 4/5 PK (Australia) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Good for tests. Lacks accuracy and convenient features

FX-260SOLAR is light, slim, and durable. This is also the official calculator for use on GED Math tests and is permitted for use on SAT and PSAT/NMSQT. It is solar-powered meaning you won't be stuck with a dead calculator in the middle of a test. The "mode" menu is printed beneath the screen so that you don't need the user's guide again. (Trust me. This is a BIG plus!) It also handles fraction calculation, converts degrees/minutes/seconds both ways, and computes mean and standard deviation. However, it lacks the HEX-OCT-BIN conversion and complex number calculation features to make it an all-around technical calculator. Users also need to press SHIFT to use the "1/x" and "nCr" functions. In comparison, Casio FX-300MS offers a much more convenient layout and costs only $1 more with the sale going on now (April 2005).On the numerical side, this model does not store enough digits to be a good financial calculator. For example, this model evaluates 200000... 4/5 Peter Kwok - See all my reviews, April 19, 2005

I have been using Casio electronics for over a decade now -- starting with first data bank and touch screen watches. The brand has never failed me, so I have chosen Casio FX-260 over TI and Sharp competitors again. The calculator is great for graduate classes in Computer Science and Finance for sure (this is what I am using it for), and I am certain it will be more than enough for Physics, Chemistry, and other sciences. Compact design, a high-contrast screen, rubber keys -- everything is just right. And if I want to do graphing, I will use Matlab. I chose this scanner over the comparable Fujitsu model becasue of my positive experience w/ Canon over time. I recommend a call to Canon after installation if you need help tweaking the configuration settings, it makes a big difference. When I received this scanner, I couldn't get the scanner to load more than 5 of the expected 50 pages at a time. I called Canon tech support and the sent me a new roller kit via FedEx overnight, free of charge. The scanner works flawlessly now. I highly recommend this product. 5/5 J. trouble

this could be a great product. It's affordable, it does duplex, and it's fast. Shortly after I started using it however, on multi-page scans some of the pages were blurry to the point of being unusable. I got a message that the page feeding assembly needed changing out, so I ordered a new assembly and changed it out, but with no improvement. So there seems to be a problem with the feeding mechanism, so some scans are blurry. This is a major problem. If it weren't for that defect, which I don't know if it's just my machine or widespread, it would be a great scanner. This is a few weeks later. I am still having problems with the feeding mechanism, even after replacing it. I actually get more useful scanning out of my all-in-one Canon mf-6550. I love Canon, but I am not having a good experience with this dedicated scanner. 3/5 Michael Chesser (AIKEN, SC United States) - See all my reviews, February 12, 2009

    Great scanner

I have a Fujitsu 6130 scanner that is rated twice as fast as this Canon scanner. It does work a little faster but for our scanning needs (a few to 20 or 30 pages) for each scan job (but very frequently) the difference in speed is not that noticeable or worth the extra money. It is comparable in price to the cheaper Fujitsu scansnaps that do not offer twain drivers for scanning. We use this for scanning into EMR (Electronic Medical Records) and for that pupose, this scanner is about as good as the Fujitsu at twice the price. It is well worth the money and you won't be disappointed. 5/5 Laurie A. Buchfuhrer - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
