    10.5.8 Server Upgrade : Mail

  • Jan 24, 2010 from jonbrown(jonathan Brown)
jonbrown Recently I have undergone a massive change, we have decided at our organization to go with Snow Leopard server in place of our Leopard Servers. Knowing that this could be problematic to use Apples built in GUI for migrating data I decided to start with a 100% clean configured Snow Leopard server.

10.5.3 Server: Did they fix it yet?

  • Jun 02, 2008 from aaronmarks(Aaron Marks)
aaronmarks Today marks the release of 10.5.3 Client and Server. There have been a few nasty bugs in Leopard Server that have given us a headache or two. The primary being being the Directory Services issue with AFP connections. The other one I wrote about awhile ago was in Server Admin and creating DNS records. According to the release notes these bugs...

Rough at First, but running great now.

When Leopard Server was first released, it certainly had some bugs. But any IT person worth their pay knows that you never install the first version of an Server OS after release. Now that we are up to version 10.5.2, I feel like it's ready to shine. The new Basic Install is great for those who are not really the IT person, but was put in charge of managing the server. The "On/Off" switches really make it easy to get services up and running. My favorite thing about Advanced is the ability to see so many stats on how the server is doing under heavy loads. And of course the best thing about a Mac OS X Server is the licensing. When compared to the costs of Windows server software, it's no comparison. 5/5 Brian Stucki (Las Vegas, NV) - See all my reviews, May 13, 2008

    Great Server Software

Not sure about some of the negative reviews of this product... I hate to say it, but I feel like the bad reviews are coming from people that do not know what they are doing in regards to setting up a server. This is a much improved implementation of server software over 10.4. Clean interface and very easy to use assuming you understand DNS, OD, WGM, and so on. As a Macintosh Consultant I have installed and setup several servers running 10.5 and they have all ran very smooth with very minimal downtime. 5/5 HookEmHorns (Austin, TX) - See all my reviews This review is from: Apple Mac OS X Version 10.5 Leopard Server [10-Client License] (DVD-ROM) Not sure about some of the negative reviews of this product... It just doesn't work

I admit I was duped into thinking this would be like Leopard desktop. The cold reality is that, from a server point of view, it's just Unix (FreeBSD) and other open source underneath. This is a good thing. The problem is that the pretty GUI tools just don't work. And when they don't, or if you just want to configure something a little more or a little different than what Apple gives you, you are up a creek. That is because Apple "extends" all the pieces, and they fight each other if you try to do something "under the table". In fact, I found it takes much longer to isolate/fix/configure something than if it was just straight Unix. It's pretty, but it's not worth it. Apple makes great hardware and a great desktop OS, but pass on this server version. The pretty tools are just aggravating. 1/5 Bud - See all my reviews, January 31, 2009

    Too many errors and problems

The other books I own from this publisher are very good, but this one looks like it was hurried to press and not properly proof-read.Examples of errors:on page 51 is a command for creating groups in the directory called "dseditgroup", and the text reads"dseditgroup -o -create ..."there is no hyphen before "create."This is pretty minor, but more frustrating are the situations in which the author simply skips over some critical information, such as on page 32 when he mentions user record templates. He tells us what should be in there, but doesn't tell us what format this template should be in, the syntax to use, etc. This stuff needs to be corrected in the next edition for sure. 2/5 C. Knocked One Out Of The Park

This title is absolutely worth every penny. From Open Directory to Active Directory, to a healthy combination, this book is well written, well organized and obviously painstakingly combed over. The excursuses are well thought out and the text contains thorough coverage of the topic that is unparalleled. Unit looks OK, performance was terrible

The case for this LaCie unit is nice. Small unit that you can hide just about anywhere if you're using it at home. If it's in an office, it's going to be in a datacenter or closet, so the looks of it won't matter a lot.Overall the thing is self-explanatory. Plug in one or two ethernet cables into LAN1 (and LAN2 for failover/load balance bonded NICs). Plug in the power, flip the switch. After that, let it pickup the DHCP address, and then use the LaCie software to access it via a web interface for config. The Web interface is acceptable. It doesn't really give you the ability to get into things at a nitty-gritty level, which is good and bad (depending on what you want to do). However, there are icons and input fields for everything that most people want to do. It can be slow at times, and it seems that a lot of changes that are made to the network settings force a reboot of the unit (which takes about 3 minutes). For an example, I had the two NICs in failover mode, and I... 1/5 Ray Salamon - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) The perfect book for me

I recently purchased a Mac Mini Server to replace some old hardware I have running linux. I thought, being a Mac, that this would be a very simple server to use an probably not need any additional documentation to run. I have been used to doing things in a very low level way and I kept trying to use the beautiful interface that Snow Leopard Server offered but then tweek things by hand. My servers I have been running for over 20 years are not very fancy and I had never configured directory services. I messed things up enough to the point where I reinstalled Snow Leopard Server a total of 5 times as I would mess things up again and again in my ignorance. I decided that I needed some help and while reading the Apple Documentation was helpful, I needed more. This book has been perfect for me. It is very easy to read. It has pictures where they are needed and each chapter has an exercise that can be completed to learn the concepts. Since I had already set up my server and was... 5/5 Phillip Porch - See all my reviews, December 14, 2009

Just what it says: a guide to the essentials

"Apple Training Series: Mac OS X Server Essentials v. 10.6" is just what it says it is: a book on how to get Mac OS X 10.6 Server up and running, and how to configure it to support different types of environments and users. It is organized into major topics according to server services (mail services, file services, Web services, etc.), and richly illustrated with screen shots. As the book is frequently used in classroom settings, every chapter has a classroom-style review section. But the book is not written as a textbook; you can skip around from topic to topic and use it as a "how to" guide. The book assumes you are familiar with the concept of server services and have either a Mac OS X or Unix/Linux background. None of the topics is covered exhaustively, and some services -- the firewall, for example -- are essentially not covered at all. The emphasis is on getting Mac OS X 10.6 Server up and running quickly and supporting users. On the whole, it... 5/5 Lawrence Charters "-- Lawrence" (Columbia, MD USA) - See all my reviews, February 7, 2010

Maybe not a bad newbie book. It regurgitates the online help.

I bought this book because I was having problems setting up my 10.6 server (after having last done such work with 10.3). All together I was disappointed with the book. I could not learn anything from it that was not in the help and hints on the server itself (or in the Apple support pages). It's very basic. Beyond that, for real problems, Google searches and blogs offer much more.It could well be helpful to people who are preparing for a certification test or just don't know much about servers. There are introductions to each section which attempt to explain what the server does in each respect (AFP, mail, chat, etc.). I hope it helps some people.I bought the book as a medium-advanced server admin who inherited a server in a bad state and needed to clean it up. This book offers no help for working out of bad configurations. (In the end I simply reinstalled the OS). Just Brilliant new OS

THis is a brilliant update to Apple's operating system. Installed with no problems, runs beautifully, and the new features are wonderful. This OS will not run on older Macs, but will run on any of the newer (last three years or so) Macs -- and it makes everything look clean, new, and runs faster (indeed!) than TIger.Safari is particularly lightning fast in Leopard. Mail has some wonderful new features (most notably the To Do and Notes features) and everything just looks better.Note that you might need to reinstall some printer drivers after updating - especially if you have Epson printers; but those are available at epson.com (or similar sites for other printers). Many of the "beta" drivers inside Leopard will not work. One note: if you watch the Apple video about Leopard and follow their instructions ("You can start the install, and go out for coffee and it will all be ready for you when you return") it is simply NOT TRUE. Wait for the First Update **UPDATED** 11-19

There is a ton of potential here with Leopard, including some very nice new features that makes the Mac even better. The only problem is that the bugs in this first release are so annoying and problematic that I've wasted more time trying to work out the kinks than being productive. Going from the stability of Tiger to this has been a huge dissapointment. My advice is to hold off a bit until they get some of these issues worked out. Here are a list of the problems I am experiencing on both my Mac Pro and Macbook (other Mac owners are reporting similar problems on their machines):1. Desktop freezing - both machines frequently have their desktops freeze up, making them inaccessible. The solution is to change the screen resolution to a lower setting and back. **Since the 10.5.1 update I have not experienced additional desktop freezing issues**2. Great help with Security and certificates

Of course, this is the official book for an Apple certification course and as such it has chapters dictated by the Apple course requirements. The first chapters on Network Services in fact expand on the OSX Server book, covering DNS, DHCP and NAT. The books usefulness goes far beyond that. The chapters on Security Systems and Services are the best part. Especially valuable is the chapter about Keys and Certificates. You will find all the info you need and more. It is difficult to find this in any other publication. 5/5 Bob Jorritsma (Port Saint Lucie, FL United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Apple Training Series: Mac OS X Security and Mobility v10.6: A Guide to Providing Secure Mobile Access to Intranet Services Using Mac OS X Server v10.6 Snow Leopard (Paperback) Of course, this is the official book for an Apple certification course and as such it has chapters dictated by the Apple course requirements. slim

While this is a fine book it is quite slim for such a high priced book. I have the Mac OS X 10.6 Support Essentials. Which at 676 pages is more than twice as large as this 315 pages volume. They are both the same price! Ludicrous! Also, unlike many other server books out there, this one has no optical media, so no edu version of Os X server apparently either!I have several other Apple Pro titles by Peachpit and I find it strange that of all the titles to have no optical media it is this one! The Logic Pro book even has some content on disc. 2/5 R. Darensbourg "RussDaren" (Oakland, CA) - See all my reviews, December 11, 2010

    Lovely simple cake stand

Like most people who are occasional bakers, I made do with putting my layer cake experiments on a regular platter covered with 3-4 sheets of plastic wrap. OK for just the family, but a complete embarrassment in front of guests.I'd seen some lovely cake stands at Crate & Barrel and Martha Stewart, but I didn't want to spend $50+ for something I wouldn't use that often, plus most I'd seen didn't come with a cover. When I saw this one on Amazon, a small investment of $15 for a stand and dome seemed just about right. I wasn't expecting much, but when it came in the mail I was very impressed. The set is very simple -- no filagrees, etchings or geegaws attached -- but heavy and well made. The glass is thick enough that I don't fear breakage in handling or cleaning. The stand itself slopes up on the edge, so the dome fits snugly and will not slide off. The set is large, and will accomodate an 11" cake and it would not be a great choice for travelling, due to its size... 5/5 Anonymous (Brooklyn NY) - See all my reviews This review is from: Anchor Hocking Presence Cake Dome Set (Kitchen) Like most people who are occasional bakers, I made do with putting my layer cake experiments on a regular platter covered with 3-4 sheets of plastic wrap. beautiful and functional

This is my first domed cake stand. I got it because I wanted to display a round layer cake for Christmas, and didn't want plastic wrap to mess up the frosting. 2 stacked nine-inch cakes fit perfectly under the dome if you're careful as you put it on - there's not a lot of extra room! I think 8-inch cakes would be easier, but the 9-inch ones DO fit if you center them exactly on the platter. The glass is just the right thickness - nice and sturdy without being bulky. I'm not worried about chipping the rim when I put the dome on. The knob handle gives you a good grasp of the lid, and the ridged pattern around the base is beautiful and retro. I can't speak to any breakage during shipping, because I got mine at a store... but you sure can't beat the price! I got mine for $9.99, and it looks and feels like a much more expensive product. Gorgeous. I expect it to last many years. I'd buy it for friends and family in a heartbeat. The punch bowl it makes seems well balanced and... 5/5 Naomi Witzke "Earlybird78" (New Hope, MN United States) - See all my reviews, December 23, 2007

    Excellent quality for the money

I bought this cake dome at least 2 years ago and am still using it today. It is very sturdy and the glass quality is pretty good, especially considering the price. I paid something like $15 at the time which is an incredible deal. 5/5 L. Paquin (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews, March 9, 2007
