  Pretty Good Security Software

  Over the years I have used several different computer security packages: McAfee, Norton, BitDefender and most recently Kaspersky. With the exception of one version of BitDeffender, I have been generally satisfied with all of them. Nonetheless, I like to change my computer security every once in a while. Each implementation has its own strengths and weaknesses, and it's likely that one software package will be able to detect a few files and threats that the other had ignored. The number of different virus protection and online security solutions has dramatically increased over the years, so it's important to do a little bit of research and familiarize yourself with various options that you have.   PROS: Installation is fairly fast and easy. I like the page ratings. Links that are good are green with a check beside them. Norton does this also. Trend Micro also rates links within emails.It can be installed on three computers.You can download SafeSync for free. With this software, you can sync the data of all your computers. It must be downloaded to each computer.CONS: During the installation, it uninstalled Spybot Search & Destroy, claiming that it was incompatible. Spybot S&D had a few choice comments about that. When choosing to uninstall, a window pops up which states: "We were not able to reproduce the alleged incompatibility and Trend Micro is not able to produce an explanation either. We therefore have to assume its request to uninstall Spybot S&D is just unfair competition. The Anti-Spyware Coalition defines software that uninstalls other security software as possible malware.   I have been having serious problems with my computers slowing down, not recognizing hyperlinks, not sending passwords properly and the security software itself turning off for no apparent reason & worse of all, I can't download security updates from windows automatically or at all for that matter. I thought this software would find & fix the problem but it did nothing and found no problems even though there clearly are serious security issues with my pc & my laptop.So, I loaded the free security software that comes with Windows 7, Microsoft Security Essentials, and in short order it found several malware. The Microsoft Security Essentials is a free software that actually works with the exception that I still can't download security updates from windows either automatically or by doing it manually.   Many reviewers are warning of faulty products, and rightly so, but they should be mentioning the seller they purchased from if they want to be helpful. I'm very happy with my purchase from CCMACCESSORIES. Placed my order on a Friday and received it on the following Monday. I received a charger and 4 ft. micro usb cord. Both are HTC branded and look exactly like the ones that came with my EVO 4G.   Beware of buying from DB Roth. Not only is this billed as an HTC OEM product which it's not, but it also was supposed to include the car charger and an lanyard, which it did not. What a ripoff. I will be sending this back but am highly irritated that it's not what I ordered.   Both of these plugs have a ground short. i.e. once a phone is plugged in the capacitive touch become inactive when using these chargers. I tried different wall sources, different wires, and different phones.   It blocked attempts to get my financial info!

  I uninstalled my expiring Kaspersky and installed Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security. The process took practically all day because there was so much that needed to be cleaned up, but after the installation was complete and my first full scan and system tuneup was done, WOW, my computer is a lot faster now! I'm having far less problems during and after booting up, too, because I set Trend Micro to delay loading startup programs until after the OS finishes booting.I was sent the 1-PC version to review instead of the 3-PC version I thought I was getting. I was disappointed about this, because our household is wirelessly networked and I wanted to have a chance to see how our network as a whole behaved with the Trend Micro product protecting all of our computers. Too bad I can't address the product's performance at that level.   Overall: Easy to use and doesn't need to constantly update like Norton or Mcafee, but may not have as good protection against older viruses.Pros:Easy to install.Takes about 10 minutes and you only need to enter an email address and your product key.Won't slow down your computer. Recent test on Tom's Hardware showed this software doesn't slow down computer for web browsing, games or productivity software. In my experience, the computer runs fast and it loads faster than McAfee.NO updates. This is "cloud based" so you won't get those annoying update reminders. However, I've heard that this approach is not so good at catching older viruses and malware.Cons:Doesn't have it's own firewall program. It has come in real handy recently shopping for a house. All my opinions stated previously are still current. One very handy feature the unit doesn't have that I wish it did was the ability to choose an alternate route while your are traveling. This can come in handy in the event there is a detour or you want to calculate a route around a traffic jam. This would create a by-pass route on-the-fly. Many street specific GPS units can do this. Although, this unit can re-route if you go off course which is something different.The '2008 City Navigator Map Update' is not much to be desired. I have not noticed any significant improvement in calculated routes or updated points of interest (POI) data over the 2007 maps release.   The Cadillac of handheld GPS units

  There are times when "pretty good" isn't good enough. For me, purchasing a GPS unit represented one of those times. I wanted a handheld GPS unit that was best-in-class. My research led me to the GPSMap 76CSx. Factors that led to the decision: frankly, the reviews here; Garmin's reputation; powerful satellite locking; great variety of base- and add-on maps; expandable storage via microSD card; altimeter; compass; battery life; transreflective LCD screen. Don't underestimate the importance of the transreflective screen: one of the biggest consumers of battery power is the LCD: with the backlight on frequently, battery life drops significantly. The transreflective LCD enables you to turn off backlighting for use outdoors during the day, which significantly reduces battery draw.I like to play with a unit before reading the manual, and in playing around I have figured out the major functions/features.   As an engineer I travel with too many power hungry devices. I have been lugging along both a single USB port battery pack and powered hub in additions to other devices. Hence I am always on the lookout for devices that reduce the quantity of travel devices.I was happy to find this device because all four ports changed devices at the same time. I was looking forward to reducing number of devices I travel with for business. This unit work well for about six months until the battery had some type of failure and expanded enough to open the seams of the case.I contacted the vendor and it took them they days to send me a form email that explained that if it was older than 6 months I was SOL. I sent back an outline of what had happened and indicated I was around 3 weeks out of coverage.   I.Sound Failed Me

  There are lots of good reviews of this product. The are a few bad reviews. My experience falls into the latter category.Aft receiving the i.Sound, I fully charged the battery, and then I carried it carefully into the Sierra Nevada Mountains at the start of a multi-day outing. I expected to be able to recharge my iPad at least once.After setting up my tent the first afternoon, I pulled the I.Sound out of a padded container, turned it on, and plugged in my IPad, which was about 85% charged. Five minutes later, the iPad was 88% charged, and the i.Sound was dead.On the off chance that I'd left the I.Sound on accidentally while carrying it in my daypack - which I didn't think was possible, given that I turned it on, and initially all four lights were lit - I gave it another chance.   SERIOUS FIRE HAZARD

  This device, the " i.Sound Portable Power Max with 16,000 mAh," is a VERY DANGEROUS FIRE HAZARD. After using the device once, I charged it, put it in the case, and placed it in a large drawer with other electonic equibment (portable hard drive, two mice, laptop, etc). Three days later, I smelled smoke in the second floor of my house during the night. The source of the smoke was the " i.Sound Portable Power Max with 16,000 mAh", which had melted. The The wood on the inside of the drawer was scorched, the portable power max was completely destroyed, the case of the portable hard drive was melted, and cables for the two mice were melted.
