If you use Windows 7 64-bit, proceed at your own risk

In one sentence: I did exactly what the *Norton Utilities* dashboard suggested and lost everything on my brand-new computer. In more than one sentence: I purchased a computer (Win7 64-bit, home premium) April 2011 and it came with Norton Internet Security already installed with a free trial period. The computer was lightning-fast, the Internet Security program doesn't slow it down at all, and I was very pleased. Those were the days! Then I went online to sign up for a year's worth of protection. As I was doing this, the Norton website offered *Norton Utilities* for an additional $10.00. I figured it could not be a bad idea, so I added that to my cart and downloaded the program. When I opened Norton Utilities to look around, I saw a 'dashboard' that told me my system 'health' was not optimal but which helpfully offered an option so the Utilities program could 'optimize' the computer's performance. Operating strictly from the Norton dashboard,... 1/5 Sandy - See all my reviews This review is from: Norton Utilities 15.0 1-User/3PCs (CD-ROM) In one sentence: I did exactly what the *Norton Utilities* dashboard suggested and lost everything on my brand-new computer. In more than one sentence: I purchased a computer (Win7 64-bit, home premium) April 2011 and it came with Norton Internet Security already installed with a free trial period. Norton Utilities v15.0.0.122

Norton Utilities v15.0.0.122:I ordered this version of Norton Utilities because my version 14 was coming up for renewal and I wanted to try the newer version to see if there were improvements over version 14, and there are. There are 5 sections to this newest version of Norton Utilities.Optimize, Maintain, Recover, Windows Tools, and Administer are all subdivided into different working tools to help keep your computer running smoothly.Optimize has the following subdivisions: Clean your registry which scans and safely cleans, repairs, and optimized your Windows registry. Defragment your registry which defragments and optimizes your registry. Tuneup your services which optimizes and manages your Windows services. Optimize your system which optimize and monitors your system for better performance. Clean your disks which cleans your computer and internet traces. trial version for windows xp

I have Windows XP and downloaded a trial edition of Norton Utilities 15. After doing everything it said to do, my "system health" went from medium to the lowest rating in two days and it deleted all my passwords without asking, along with paths to some of my files. Now every time I try to reboot the computer I go through this nerve wracking situation with Windows Installer trying to reload the files with corrupted paths, but it can't, so it takes me forever to get going. And I stopped the scanner from starting every day and deleting my passwords all over again, wth.I'm not a high tech person and don't know how to fix these problems, so have resigned myself to saving all my files and doing fresh reloads of my software and operating system. Years ago, I had the first version of Utilities on an older computer and didn't have all these problems with it. CRASH TIME and NO REMOTE ACCESS

If you are using Windows 7, this product WILL make your computer crash and require a FULL system recovery if you use the "Defrag Your Registry" feature.I build, repair and maintain computers for quite a few clients. I have always recommended Norton Utilities. I know the product inside out. Trust me, you will REGRET using this product with Windows 7. Your computer WILL crash. Furthermore, Norton customer support is in TOTAL denial about this issue. Do NOT use it. Your computer WILL crash.ANOTHER problem is: Even though there is no firewall in this product, the moment you install it, you will no longer be able to use the "Remote Assistance" feature in the maintainance folder of your Windows 7 Comp,. You will also not be able to use remote assistance that comes with Windows Live Messenger. Norton denies it, but I have done countless tests with countless users. When it is uninstalled, I can use remote assistance. When I reinstall it, you can NOT. Norton Internet Security 2012 & Util.

I had used a Norton internet security product a number of years ago and let it expire because it just didn't seem that mature. Well, that's not true anymore. The security and utilities software working together are truely a dynamic duo with the internet security keeping the bad guys out and the utilities continuously working to keep the system working at peak performance. It's been installed on two notebooks and one desktop computer for about 6 months now and all three are doing great. The oldest notebook had slowed to a crawl and after installing/running this package it returned to normal speed and continues that way. Norton has gotten it right and these two products definitely make a good team. 5/5 Cayenne27 - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Don't waste your money!

This is not your father's (or older brother's) Norton Utilities. This is a waste of money and in reality just a bunch of shortcuts to built in Windows system utilities. If you want what was once called Norton Utilities (especially Win Doctor and System Doctor) buy yourself Norton Systemworks Basic or Standard. I was so unhappy with this package that I removed it from both computers I installed it on and installed Norton Systemworks 2008 and then sent NO14 back to Syamntec for a full refund. 1/5 D. NOT the old Norton Utilities. Registry Mechanic rebranded.

Peter Norton made his fortune with the PC DOS era Norton Utilities, a PC problem-solving program for the technically aware. Over the years this has changed somewhat, but still has much the same technical flavor. These tools are still available as part of Norton SystemWorks. But if you are expecting Norton Utilities 14 to have these tools, you are in for a rude shock. It has been COMPLETELY changed, and in fact is a program for a third party (PC Tool's Registry Mechanic) rebranded as a Norton product. The tools here are for the non-technical. Registry fixing is a one-button operation, and no user intervention is allowed. Same for all the others. If you want an automatic program that won't let you choose options, this is for you. If not, get SystemWorks instead. Two stars because it does work, but downgraded quite a but for the false branding. One of the reasons why Symantec and Norton have gotten such awful user reviews lately is due to... 2/5 Kevin Murphy (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews, May 30, 2009

    BURN YOUR MONEY

I remember Norton Utilities, and this isn't it. I have used Norton Utilities since the days of MS-DOS. If you're like me, you've counted on Norton Utilities in the past. Don't be mistaken by the name - this item is almost worthless. The only thing in this software package worth anything is the registry cleaner, and registry optimizer.Remember Norton Speed Disk? Not here.Remember Norton Disk Doctor? Not here.Remember Norton System Info? Not here.Remember Norton Unerase? Not here.An avid and long time fan of Norton Utilities will see the "defrag your hard drive" option. Like me, you'll probably be expecting Norton Speed Disk. Don't bet on it - it just runs Windows' built in Defrag.I ran 'System Information', expecting Norton System Info. Puh-lease. If this is truly 'Norton System Info' it is an extremely old version. It reported my system as having 2gb of RAM (I actually have 4gb). If Windows can detect 4gb, there is no good reason... 1/5 Safari Hood "Safari Hood" (http://www.safarihood.com) - See all my reviews, September 7, 2009

My Norton ghost 15 report card

Backups get A+:1. Backing up over network, high compression, custom drivers loading is easy to do. You will backup in style2. Superior and useful utilities.3. Every imaginable problem from the legendary Ghost 2003 is fixed and improved.4. No more .gho format anymore. The current format so far has handled some large partition backups for me. Full 30GB partitions to high compression is a breeze.Restores get C-:1. Right away after a partition recover, you will get the message "Please insert the Recovery disk". It will say "Error EA730002: Cannot find the driver database directory". How does this error stay in the product? It is one confusing message for a successful recovery. The recovery disk is really just the ghost CD.2. Then there is the staged recovery mystery. With 2 identical machines of the same hardware, I can only restore to the machine where I initially did the cold backups. I don't... 3/5 B. Wong - See all my reviews, December 4, 2009

I tried using "Copy My Hard Drive" to make a bootable Windows 7 disk clone and it rendered the source drive (C:) unbootable! I had to get out the installation DVD to "repair" my Windows 7 installation.I used to back up my XP drives this way using Ghost 12 and it worked smoothly for years. Ghost 15.0 has a fatal flaw.

Ghost 15.0 will not communicate with my Netwok Attached Storage hard drive from Iomega. Since the reason I bought it was to back my system up on the NAS drive, it is worthless. Norton Support Technicians have spent a great deal of time on my computer trying to make it work for over a month with no success. Finally they said "Sorry, but no refund". Every other application, includung Norton Security Suite work fine with my NAS drive so I believe that Ghost 15.0 has an inherent flaw in its communications routine which you will not discover until you have opened the package, thereby ruling out any refund. Best bundle on the internet

I wanted to buy a copy of Norton Utilities because it is the best program out there for optimizing your computer. I found it bundled with Norton Internet security 2011. I didn't really want the antivirus because of previous experience with the load that previous versions of Norton Systems Tools put on my CPU running everything under the sun to keep me safe. I was pleased to find that this bundle doesn't bog down my system at all. Instead, Norton Utilities allowed me to shut down unused services and optimize the performance so that it is faster than ever. Norton Internet security has warned me away from known malware sites I clicked on links to, and thwarted more than one attack on my computer. I use Norton Ghost in the event hackers get ahead of the curve. It is cheap insurance and has saved hours rebuilding a drive from scratch. 5/5 Get a Clue - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Excellent program but.....

I have found the newer versions (2011-2012) of Norton Internet Security to be both highly effective at protecting my PC and absent of the cumbersome background programs that effected system performance. I am a fan and will continue to use it. The only change that is bad is that now when you add a new version it does not just add 365 days to whatever days you have remaining on your current protection so you just lose out on those days. That is not the way it has been in the past so wait until your current version is expiring to install the new code and activate it so you don't lose the last 50 days of your current protection like I did. 3/5 R. Much more reasonable through Amazon

I've always trusted and used Norton Internet Security programs on my computers. The last few years I just had Symantic load the new program automatically each year. But, this year when they told me my virus protection would be expiring in 30 days, and then informed me that they just wanted to let me know my credit card would automatically be charged the 59.99 to renew. I thought to myself that was awfully expensive especially being that this year had been hard on my family financially, so I started looking around. Lo and behold I found the same virus protection software through Amazon for less than half the price. Still the best

I have used Norton for years, in its various personas (anti-virus, Internet security, and 360). Generally I buy whatever is available for a good price on Black Friday. This year is was the Internet Security, but only for one computer. So I had to substitute the freebee, McAfee, on my second and third computers. I wish I had not. Should have just paid for the extra support. So for me, at least, Norton has always worked. I have never had a virus get through. The anti spam works, and my computers don't crash. McAfee, on the other hand, has not worked well and will be replaced. I highly recommend any Norton product, keeping in mind that smaller older computers should use the simplest product available (anti-virus), instead of the top product (360), so that the software doesn't make your computer lag much. 5/5 Victoria H. What a pathetic product... 1/5 Tony NYC "Tony NYC" - See all my reviews This review is from: Norton Utilities Premier 14.5 1-User/3PC [Old Version] (CD-ROM) If you are using Windows 7, this product WILL make your computer crash and require a FULL system recovery if you use the "Defrag Your Registry" feature.I build, repair and maintain computers for quite a few clients. Norton Utilities on vista and xp

So far I have installed Norton Utilities Premiere 2010 3PC on my Gateway Vista laptop and on a Thinkpad 43 XP laptop. Things went well on the Vista laptopWhen I installed on the XP laptop, the first thing I noticed was that my Norton Internet Security 2010, which I installed in November, was no longer running - and I could not MAKE it run. Also a mysterious "installer error" popped up which I could not make go away (claimed something was on an unnamed CD that it needed). I then got into "chat" with Symantec support and got a very nice tech, who, over a 2.5 hour period, most of which where he was running my pc remotely, managed to get NIS running again and made the popup go away. He did have to dis-install both NIS and NU and reinstall them with downloads. However, my wife is continuing to find functions that are no longer workable, e.g., her Adobe Acrobat can no longer print. Basically, at least on the xp laptop, NU seems to have done much more damage than... 2/5 Robert Williams (Minnesota) - See all my reviews, May 3, 2010

Useful application, but not as good as past versions

When I built my new Windows 7 computer a few months ago I thought, I needed to get Norton Utilities. Hell, I've used their products for over 10years and it seemed like a wise move. Overall, the product works well, but many of its features it uses comes with windows 7. So in retrospect....I could have passed on this software and saved some money. So if you're a Windows 7 user...I would pass on purchasing it 2/5 P. Greco "Film, Photography, Technology & Boo... (Alpharetta, GA United States) - See all my reviews, February 5, 2010
