Norton SystemWorks 2008 Standard Edition 11.0

A pain to install
I've been using Norton products for over 15 years. When I tried to install Systemworks 2008 Standard from CD, I got the install screen, clicked on install, and...nothing. After going on-line and wading through the Symantec support menus, I finally found out that you had to uninstall any previous version prior to installing this one. No where in the skimpy installation manual that came with the product does it say this. After downloading the uninstall tool, running it, rebooting, and attempting the install again, Systemworks was working. I then tried to install AntiVirus, but about 90% of the way through the installation it aborted and said it had "encountered a problem". A link was provided to Symantec, but when chose my product (Systemworks 2008 Standard) all I got was a blank page.So I ran the uninstall tool again. This time when it was done, I checked the Symantec directory under Program Files and found it was still there and contained several files. I deleted them, ran... 3/5 D. Orders "Otterwan" - See all my reviews, November 8, 2007Ouch! I'm a loyal Norton user.
I am a loyal Norton user. I've used Norton SystemWorks (NSW) for many years, and have been consistently happy. I'm running Vista Ultimate on a great computer (Pentium D Processor 940 at 3.2 Ghz, 4 GB RAM). I downloaded NSW from Symantec's web site, but it won't install. After expasperting sessions with "English as a second language" tech support, I was finally able to install the software. After running several of the "check/fix routines" on NSW, many other programs did not work. I had to reinstall at least five different programs. I'm back to normal, thanks to back-ups I made on an external hard drive before installing NSW. But, I am afraid to run the "check/fix routines" on NSW again until (or if) they fix the glitches. 1/5 D. MCGUE (Mililani, Hawaii) - See all my reviews, October 18, 2007Great program to use, but a pain to delete my old version.
I've been using Norton SystemWorks Basic for many years and have been very happy with the way it functions on Windows XP. After reading other reviews, I decided to first delete my old SystemWorks 2006 before attempting the installation of the new CD SystemWorks Standard Edition, v11.About 2/3 of the way through the deletion, I got an error message saying that the deletion was aborted. This was time consuming, and unfortunately predictable. The Error message directed me to the Symantec Website to download their Uninstall Tool. Deletion of the old program using this Symantec Uninstall Tool then went very smoothly. I agree with the disappointment expressed by a previous reviewer. Symantec should make this product to include an Uninstall Tool on the CD, or better yet have an automatic uninstall of previous versions as a part of the new installation process. The good news is that the installation of both the new SystemWorks and the Antivirus programs went... 4/5 Philip Venard (Orange County, CA USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Norton SystemWorks 2008 Standard Edition 11.0 (CD-ROM) I've been using Norton SystemWorks Basic for many years and have been very happy with the way it functions on Windows XP. Don't DOWNGRADE to Systemworks 2009
Systemworks 2009 is a DOWNGRADE (definitely not an upgrade!) from previous versions. If it were free, it still wouldn't be worth having.Much remains the same, but one functionality has been totally screwed up. Many programs set SHORTCUTS to files. After you've used a program on some files and later move or delete those files, or even if the program itself does so, these shortcuts are often still in place. Now, if you work with a lot of files, as I do, over a short time this can mean several hundred shortcuts are set in your computer that are "dead" - they go nowhere. Obviously, this is not a good thing. Over a longer period of time, this is THOUSANDS of invalid shortcuts! In the past, Systemworks would find these non-functional shortcuts and bring them up for repair. It would find the file the shortcut originally pointed to, if it could. At repair time you could choose to have the shortcut reset to point to the new file location, or delete the shortcut... 1/5 Frank Dutton (Many, LA USA) - See all my reviews, July 6, 2009Deceptive billing practices and no customer service
Purchased Norton System Works, which included a 1-year subscription to updates. Installation was a huge pain, requiring more than 6 reboots and 3 more downloads beyond the initial software download. Thankfully, I know enough about computers to trudge through it all without any help. Then, after it was paid for and installed, they sent me an email indicating that they will retain my credit card information, because my purchase of System Works serves as proof that I agree to allow them to charge me for future upgrades and updates automatically. I never agreed to that. So, I went to their website and tried to contact "customer service". No phone numbers and all i can do is fill out request forms which remain unanswered. I will be contact Visa and my state attorney general next. I thought Norton/Symantec were very reputable names, but I was greatly mistaken. 1/5 J. Janzen (Minneapolis, MN USA) - See all my reviews, January 12, 2009Dissappointing, doesn't live up to its hype
I had what I thought was a simple problem. My PC was freezing due to some file errors, but chkdsk/f would not correct the problems because windows saw the the drive as "RAW," which supposedly means the drive is unformatted. Usually, the files on a RAW drive would not even be accessible, but in my case they were. I figured that the Norton Disk Doctor component of this package would take care of the problem in short order, but instead, the worthless piece of crap software would "complete" the diagnostics in about 5 seconds (including the surface scan) and reported that the drive had NO PROBLEMS! Windows chkdsk was able to list the actual errors in the file structure, so I knew that they were present. After screwing around with this worthless dog of a program for a while, I finally had to back-up the files to an external drive, repartition and format the problem drive, then load the files back onto it.Complete success, all symptoms fixed. But no thanks to... 3/5 HealthAdminGuy - See all my reviews This review is from: Norton Systemworks 2009 Standard Edition (CD-ROM) I had what I thought was a simple problem. Peter Norton's Complete Guide to SystemWorks 2.0
Book (Macmillan Computer Pub)
List Price: $29.99
Now a difficult to read, verbose "Norton guide"
Peter Notron's SystemWorks 2.0, which is obviously NOT written by Peter Norton, has become a verbose, 500+ page paperback requiring small print because of unneeded cliches, confusing explanations, and superfluous tangents. Most information is there, but the writing style has become difficult to comprehend without sitting in front of ones computer and following it step by step. Let's get back to basic, concise English writing. Unfortunately it is presently the only book available covering this suite. 2/5 John E. RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!
Symantec has become toxic! I don't know what I am going to use this year, but it will have nothing to do with Norton or Symantec.I have used Norton products since the days of Peter Norton's Utilities for DOS 3.x. I have been a professional in the world of PC's and MAC's since before there were PC's or MAC's. I have recommended a lot of Symantec products over the years because a) they were better-behaved than some [notably McAfee], b) they offered more useful tools than most, and c) the different pieces worked well together -- which cannot always be said of installations built from several different vendors' products, even though each one might be superior to the comparable Symantec offering. That has all changed. The basic issue is that it is simply not possible -- without a high level of expertise -- to run security, backup, and optimization products without occasionally making use of the vendor's product support. I was able somehow to install SystemWorks 2007, but the errors and issues would not stop and had to rollback to my previous 2006 version. I used this version 2007 and it offers nothing new to the 2006 version other than the same ussual UI change bundled with millions of new bugs.Only wish I had found a better alternative than Symantec, I would switch without hesitation. Please spare yourself from this installation nightmare and renew your currently working version. I spent a whole weekend just repairing the failed installation of 2007 and rolling back to 2006. 1/5 Giovanni Azua - See all my reviews, May 20, 2007warning - will crash your system
If you have an older systemworks loaded, NSW will go to remove the older GO BACK version. If it does, (depending on your system) OK. However, if it wants you to go to Symantek web site and download a GO BACK removal toll, beware. I downloaded it and ran it and it stated it wanted to restart my system. What it did was screw up the partition and crashed the system. GO Back puts your data in a seperate partition. Symantek knows about this and has a "fix" you run before loading NSW, but they didn't let anyone know that it may crash your system. On an older PC, without windows restore tool, it works OK. However, if you have a newer PC with a windows resotre loaded and then have an older NSW GO back loaded, it will crash your PC if you use their GO Back removal tool. Emailed Symantec twice, they stated they would get back in 7 days - never did. A little faster thant SystemWorks 2005
I upgraded thinking that my "old" 2005 version just HAD to be running out of gas. Most of the features are similar to the old. Defrag runs at about the same speed and looks to be the same. Antivirus is MUCH better and checks the Symantec web site about every 15 minutes for updates. It doesn't scan the whole file system any faster than it used to, however. What threw me was that they hid Ghost. When I go to the Symantec toolbar on the installed programs menu, it says "empty". Well it is still there but it is called Backup and Restore. But don't turn loose the whole Backup and Restore with its schedule unless you are prepared to wait a LONG time every few days. Backup and Restore take its piece of the machine from the top and everything else running appears as slow as Molasses!! And the "compare" it makes with the previous backup is glacial. After half an hour and 3% completed, I cancelled it. It would have taken all night at that speed!. So I used the hidden Ghost to still... 4/5 R. A. Let me start out by saying that I'm a Software Engineer with over 25+ experience and have been working with PC's since IBM came out with their PC1 in the early '80s. While I'm certainly not an expert, I have installed my share of software over the years. In fact, this would be the 3rd version of Norton's SystemWorks (NSW) that I had installed on this PC.As required, I uninstalled NSW 2006 using the Windows Add/Remove feature. I then installed my new NSW 12.0. Everything seemed to be going well until I ran the Live Update on the NSWs side. I had previously run it on the Norton AntiVirus side - they seem to be more disjoined in this version of NSW than in previous versions - and it worked as expected. On the NSWs side it failed utterly. After several attempts to get it going on my own, I gave up. I then logged onto Symantec's support chat feature. The first tech spent about an hour and finally admitted that he could not help me and that he needed to turn me... 1/5 Leonard J. This product is off the chain. I have been using it for years. If your pc is working & you are not having a problem, you will love this product. If your pc is broken then you need to get a tech person to fix it fast. Then put Norton System Works to work on your pc. So many people have serious problems & then put this on your pc. Wrong! This is a product to keep your pc in running shape. If your pc has the minimum ram of 512 you can run this program. Although I would recommend at least 1 geg of ram for a any system. The more ram the better. I have used this products for years & other tech people have told me that Norton is too heavy on the system. I know its heavy on your system. I also know that if you follow the instruction with Norton System Works you will not have any problems. I have never had a problem since I have been buying this product. People who have problems with this products are not doing something right. I have put this product on over 100 pc's & never had a problem... 5/5 Errol J. Norton Internet Security 2011 & Norton Utilities Bundle (For Up To 3 Pcs)
Software (Symantec)
List Price: $79.99
Best bundle on the internet
I wanted to buy a copy of Norton Utilities because it is the best program out there for optimizing your computer. I found it bundled with Norton Internet security 2011. I didn't really want the antivirus because of previous experience with the load that previous versions of Norton Systems Tools put on my CPU running everything under the sun to keep me safe. I was pleased to find that this bundle doesn't bog down my system at all. Instead, Norton Utilities allowed me to shut down unused services and optimize the performance so that it is faster than ever. Norton Internet security has warned me away from known malware sites I clicked on links to, and thwarted more than one attack on my computer. I use Norton Ghost in the event hackers get ahead of the curve. It is cheap insurance and has saved hours rebuilding a drive from scratch. 5/5 Get a Clue - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Norton Internet Security 2011 & Norton Utilities Bundle (For Up To 3 Pcs) (CD-ROM) I wanted to buy a copy of Norton Utilities because it is the best program out there for optimizing your computer. Norton Internet security has warned me away from known malware sites I clicked on links to, and thwarted more than one attack on my computer. i installed this product on my PC after my Verizon FiOS McAfee program allowed my Internet connection to be compromised. I have since deleted the McAfee and no longer pay Verizon $5.99/month. So far and after 2 months, there have been no problems. Buying this from Amazon saves nearly half the "street" price. 5/5 Arthur A.
