4-star product, 1-star support, tricky and expensive upgrade
After running Norton 360 v4 for nearly a year across two Windows 7 PCs, I have been very satisfied with its performance and stability. I was looking forward to upgrading to v5, and extending my subscription.Functionally, Norton 360 v5 is very similar to v4 with a few additions:- improved SONAR protection (blocked 100% of virus/malware threats in Dennis Technology test)- updated Download Insight for even greater protection / scan of downloaded files- refined user interfaceFrom an effectiveness and performance perspective, I don't think you can get better than Norton 360 v5. It scans transparently in the background, with notification updates that show from the taskbar, without interrupting your work. Unlike other anti-virus software I'd used in the past, I didn't notice significant impact on my work when it's installed and running. Norton 360 5.0 improves on version 4.0 by making it even faster, better looking, and taking up even less resources while retaining the same effectiveness. Installation is exceptionally fast and within a minute or two, Norton 360 is up and running. The interface could use some work, but overall, it is pretty nice. Important tasks are immediately in your face by hovering over four LARGE blocks. Scans are much faster than Microsoft Security Essentials, Panda, and McAfee. The add-ons are decent. Parental Controls are mediocre. It has a few nice tools that make online shopping easier and safer.Norton 360 contains many performance improvement tools such as Registry Cleanup, File Cleanup, and Disk Optimizer. Some are available by default in Windows though I have found Norton's to be more comprehensive and faster. Norton 360 is also very light on resources. It feels like it isn't even there! Norton 360 ends computer problems forever.
Does Norton 360 live up to the hype? For me it does. I bought my first version of Norton 360 3 years ago. I had been using Zone Alarm, Zone Alarm is freeware and donations are accepted but not mandatory. Zone Alarm did not cut it for me. I kept getting emails from them about all these wonderful premium versions that I could buy. They pestered and pestered. With Zone Alarm it seems that it totally took over my computer. Also, my computer was getting slower and slower and no matter what solution I would try, eventually, my computer would slow down again very soon.About three years ago, a friend mentioned Norton 360 to me and I had recalled that a lot of techies did not care for Norton products and they had gotten a pretty bad rap from the tech community. I decided to give 360 a try. I visited one of my local electronics big box stores and picked up a CD ROM version of Norton 360. At the time I had a desktop from HP and a laptop from Toshiba. Not Trial Version
I purchased the product from Amazon and it arrived very quicky. Product is as decribed. It is not a trial version. After install, it did say that I had a 3 day trial, however, the instructions that came with the software say that you must activate the product within 15 days of install. A product key is attached to the instructions. Fast scan
I downloaded MyAntiVirus Pro to my Kindle Fire. I thought it might run in the background, but I need to click on it and tell it to scan. I can't ask it to scan just one app, it has to scan them all. The good thing is the scan is fast, whether I choose the quick scan or the full scan. There is an update feature, but it is not automatic. It needs to be selected manually.The most niggly thing about it is hitting "exit" does not exit the app. I need to hit the "home" icon to get out, but that's not exactly hard to do. It's not a bad antivirus scanner, and I'm happy for the speed._______________________UPDATE: I just want to make a correction to my review. I wrote the above review after running it for about a day. After using it a few days, it has become apparent that this little app does run in the background. After every app download, the antivirus app tells me there are no viruses. Renewal Costs More Than New Software - Otherwise OK
I have been using the Norton security products for many years, and I have been for the most part very satisfied with them. The one gripe I have is that every year when I go to renew my subscription, I find that I can purchase new copies of the software for less than the renewal price. Although it is relatively easy to buy new copies of the software every year and avoid the exorbitant renewal costs, I feel like Symantec is trying to take advantage of me. I think loyal customers should be rewarded with renewal costs that are at or below readily available costs for the new software from reliable sources like Amazon. Instead, Symantec prefers to try to gouge its customers. For this software which is currently selling for $37.99 on Amazon, Symantec charges $59.99 for renewal. Norton continues its good run.... still some flaws and cosmetic improvements this time
I have been using Norton Antivirus/Internet security for years now (on 3 PCs running XP) and the big turn around for the past few years with 'light' software has been great. Most times, issues have been due to non-removal of other/earlier versions of Norton software.Installation: The recent improvements in installation are continuing to be great. I was able to upgrade from NIS2010 to 2011 in under 2 minutes. If you still have license period left from your previous installation, choose to upgrade using Norton upgrade option (You'll get pop-up notice or check Support - Check new version/product update). If you upgrade using the disc, it will over-write your existing license period (doesn't make sense, but that is the case here). However, after internet upgrade, you can enter the license code from the disc to extend the license for another year (just before your license period expires). One of the best if not the best IS software
Well, after a few month of beta testing I guess it's time to give everybody my opinion. Since 2010 Norton became my favorite security suite for my PC, and this one is no exception. I tested it on 3 different PC running XP Pro, Vista H.P.32bit and Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit. Once you get this software it will let you install on 3 different computers. Haven't tested 64bit version, but I'm pretty sure it should work the same. For those who already has a 2010 edition you won't see mush of the changes, it's more like refined version, which is a very good thing. For the interface it keeps the dark theme, with yellow text, but moves the large graphic security status indicator from the main interface window up to the task-bar and system tray icons. The UI is impressively easy to use. It's still very fast light on resources, with an extremely good protection. Backups get A+:1. Backing up over network, high compression, custom drivers loading is easy to do. You will backup in style2. Superior and useful utilities.3. Every imaginable problem from the legendary Ghost 2003 is fixed and improved.4. No more .gho format anymore. The current format so far has handled some large partition backups for me. Full 30GB partitions to high compression is a breeze.Restores get C-:1. Right away after a partition recover, you will get the message "Please insert the Recovery disk". It will say "Error EA730002: Cannot find the driver database directory". How does this error stay in the product? It is one confusing message for a successful recovery. The recovery disk is really just the ghost CD.2. Then there is the staged recovery mystery. Unbootable Source Drive
I tried using "Copy My Hard Drive" to make a bootable Windows 7 disk clone and it rendered the source drive (C:) unbootable! I had to get out the installation DVD to "repair" my Windows 7 installation.I used to back up my XP drives this way using Ghost 12 and it worked smoothly for years. No backup program should modify anything on the source drive. There are several threads on the Symantec site about this and no one has a clue. Ghost 15.0 has a fatal flaw.
Ghost 15.0 will not communicate with my Netwok Attached Storage hard drive from Iomega. Since the reason I bought it was to back my system up on the NAS drive, it is worthless. Norton Support Technicians have spent a great deal of time on my computer trying to make it work for over a month with no success. Finally they said "Sorry, but no refund". Every other application, includung Norton Security Suite work fine with my NAS drive so I believe that Ghost 15.0 has an inherent flaw in its communications routine which you will not discover until you have opened the package, thereby ruling out any refund. Norton 360 5.0 Premier Version install flaw
The products works.There are problems installing on a computer with a previous Norton version already installed. Norton makes installlation appear easy in their instructions, however, they don't tell you that you need to uninstall the previous version before installing the new version. So you follow the installation instruction provided in the box and it doesn't install. Then you call the Customer Service number in India and they tell you that you have to uninstall the earlier version before you can install the new version. To do that you must download Norton Uninstall, perform the uninstall and then you can install the new version. It took at least 45 minutes to do this.It is a flaw that could be avoided if the instructions were written properly and included the uninstall program with the new version. It took at least 45 minutes to do this.It is a flaw that could be avoided if the instructions were written properly and included the uninstall program with the new version. I'm shocked Symantec has made a product this good.
I tend to choose my antivirus on an annual basis and always mid year. This allows for a good combination of sale price to product life cycle ratio and there are plenty of reviews to check out. I decided to go with Norton 360 V5.0 Based on the reviews at PCMag.com. It rated the highest in almost every category. My personal experiences are that it installs quickly, uses very low resources and so far has done a terrific job. I get the best AV suite every year because my wife likes to face book and isn't very careful about the links she clicks on when she is searching for stuff. The less time momma spends being angry about her PC performance and the less time I have to spend fixing her computer the better. The program will run processes in the background based on available resources and will pop up a small non-intrusive message letting you know it is running those processes in the back ground. Great Product!!!
I just installed norton on my laptop and it works perfectly. Just as described it doesn't affect the computer performance and has a super easy user friendly menu. I had different internet security products over the years and I have to say that this one the best one by far. Everything is really easy from computer tune up to manage your backup files and such, it even scans your facebook wall for treats!I would definitely recomend that product to anyone. Great Value
I have been using Norton to protect my computers since the 80's. Since I am a long time repeat customer, that says it all. I have tried others that worked well, but found that Norton was the least intrusive. Going about it's business in the back ground and leaving me alone. I really like the ability to turn off Norton anti-virus from the task bar when I'm installing new software, instead of burrowing down thru clicks and clicks to turn it off on it's home page. Buying this combo saves me time, effort and money. I only have to watch for one date of renewal on my computers. I used to write on my disks which one went to which computer. No longer - one disk for all! Do you own more than one computer and have been buying the single version for each one? Then you already are aware of the great value of this combo. 5/5 L. Excellent Antivirus
Throughout the years I have used several programs to protect home computers from the usual threats of surfing the web; although no Antivirus is bullet proof against every possible virus or hacker, not having an up to date antivirus is welcoming trouble.This new version compares to similar entries of other vendors, and most of the basic features are shared in all the programs. The BEST!
I've been using AVG since 2006 and I always end up sending junk emails through my Yahoo account. I installed AVG + Spybot Destroy & Search and nothing has been detected until I decided to have a go at Norton. I remember I used Norton Anti-virus a long time ago but it was so CPU intensive that I went through AVG. When I first installed it detected a major Trojan Horse and lots of suspicious cookies. I've never had any problem at all on my PC and I've never sent any junk mail at all. Install problems corrupting drivers/registry
My laptop was working great but my Norton antivirus subscription had expired so I purchased Norton 360 Premiere. After installing 360 my laptop refused to connect to the internet either wirelessly or via ethernet. I called Symantec support and they walked me through uninstalling 360. After uninstalling 360 the laptop would still not work. Symantec said it was a FiOS problem. I called Verizon and they walked me through some diagnostic tests (which they said Symantec should have done) and they concluded my registry and drivers were corrupted by the 360 software. Not their problem. Called back Symantec and their seemingly incompetent (would start to tell me to do one thing and then change their mind and have me do something different) support person had me delete all "norton" folders from my registry and restart. Still no access to internet. Symantec Says call verizon. Verizon now says that what Symantec did does not fix the registry and Verizon suggested I pay somebody like... 1/5 Janice E. Fast, Convenient & Best of All...Works where others Failed
I've tried several anti-virus suites in the past year including McAffee and ZoneAlarm plus a few others...after getting a nasty computer virus that wrecked my hard-drive with one of the "other" well known products, I switched to this for a 30 day free trial then purchase at the end of the trial period. After doing four or five weeks of research and trying kaspersky and bitdefender(which is a monster resource hog) norton outshined them. It's fast, in fact it's the fastest full virus scan I've experienced and resource light. It catches everything and doesn't allow anything to go unnoticed. I used to be a Norton fan in the past then after I discovered back four or five years ago that norton allowed many viruses into my computer, I moved on. Bitdefender was slow, but it was comprehensive. After getting tired of the slow updates and scan rates and false positives I decided to go hunting again and ended up back with Norton. Succeeded where another failed.
About two weeks ago my daughters computer was attacked with somthing which tried to make her think her hard-drive was failing. It masked itself as a windows recovery program. It asked her to go on line to download a fix for the problem. Knowing you cannot fix a failing piece of hardware with software she suspected she had a virus. She contacted a Mcafee representative to see what could be done. They agreed it was a virus and had her run several scans. It found one infected file but did not find this virus and could not get rid of it. She wanted to know how come Mcafee did not stop this virus and could not fix it. She was told that they can't stop everything. She immediately cancelled her automatic renewal to Mcafee, and I ordered this for her. She did not use her computer until the Norton arrived. We then removed the Mcafee and installed Norton, and imediately scanned the computer. It found and removed three threats immediately.
