    McAfee is obtrusive and buggy

I have never been more frustrated with a piece of software in my life. It keeps saying that it can't update because I have a faulty internet connection: my internet connection is fine. Than I go to their website and download their trouble shooter and their trouble shooter crashes in Windows 7. In addition It is constantly reminding me of its presence. I am erasing this program which I paid good money for and downloading Microsoft Security Essentials which is free. 1/5 Michael G. Lang "mlang46" - See all my reviews, November 22, 2010

Didn't catch spyware / virus. Charges almost $100 to fix it

I use McAfee since I bought my desktop 5 years ago, but last week I got a virus (well, in fact, very malicious spyware). All kind of excuses from McAfee (blame the customer). I ended up with paying >90 USD to get a technician fix what McAfee didn't catch. Even if this spyware is very old and well documented and I get automatic updates from McAfee. The technician from India did a good job fixing it, but to pay almost 100 USD (incl tax) to fic a problem that McAfee didn't cath is outrageous. Not very "Total" - it doesn't protect against malware

I've purchased and used this product for a few years without much problems until a few days ago when the "Privacy Protection" malware infected my wife's computer. I THOUGHT I had "total protection" with this product so I simply downloaded the latest updates and ran a "deep scan"...only to discover it didn't get rid of the problem.I then went to MaAfee.com and drilled down to their technical support page. From there, I started a chat dialog with one of their technical support reps who confirmed that their software doesn't protect against this problem. Instead, the tech rep suggest I purchase their "Virus Removal Service" for $89.95/year...so much for McAfee's "total protection".I then downloaded the free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program from CNET which worked as advertised.I don't see the point of paying for something that doesn't work as advertised when I can get a better product for free. 1/5 GookLock (Santa Maria, CA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great Product, But the cost adds up

I own this product, but purchased it directly from McAfee. I have used it for 2 years so far on three different computers at the same time. Also my company uses McAfee as their corporate standard for over 50,000 end users. I believe it to be solid and it has consistently worked well for me. My only problem has to do with the price... each year you have to pay again and each year the price goes up. It is almost always cheaper to re-purchase the product than to extend the license. Also, they give you 2GB of online storage for backups. My wife exceeded that and the only way to get more is to pay $59/year for unlimited storage. She only needs another couple GB of storage, and $60/year more is too much to ask for. But they have me trapped because my wife does not want more programs on her laptop and she is not technical. So I have to pay the price... per year, every year. So the bottom line is that this is a great product, but the cost will seem low at the beginning until you... 5/5 Rob R. Buyer Beware!

When I replaced tried to replace my expiring McAfee program, with another, Total Protection 2011,re-starting my computer was a necessary part of the installation. But upon restarting, my system crashed. For some reason I was unable to use System Restore and had to reformat the hard drive. I assumed (foolishly) that this was a system problem, and installed a new copy of Total Protection 2011 on my brand new system. It seemed to work, but asked me to "activate", which I did by clicking the activate button; but again and again it counted down the 15 days until it stopped working, never accepting activation. The software would never accept activation!! I tried to remove the program and "bang", system crash. Same problem. McAfee was no help, their auto find-and-fix did not solve the problem and I refused to pay US$128.00 to McAfee for help with a problem caused by McAfee. I paid a Dell technician top remove all the pieces of McAfee that were in place and could not be removed with... 1/5 James M. Herndon - See all my reviews, December 1, 2011

    New and Better

During almost 30 years of computer experience I have used a lot of anti-virus/Internet security software. This includes Norton, BitDefender, Kaspersky, Panda, earlier versions of McAfee, and most recently AVG. None are ideal and a couple (BitDefender and Panda) caused me serious computer problems. McAfee was my choice for several years until it became cumbersome and excruciatingly slow as was Norton at that time. It was then that I began trying other products.I always check user reviews of products, especially software, before making a purchase. I was unable to do so with McAfee Antivirus Plus 2011 because none were available. Reviews of McAfee products for 2010 were not favorable but because I was not pleased with other products I decided to give it a try nonetheless. I am not sorry that I did so. Boot time has decreased dramatically. McAfee Antivirus Plus 2011 doesn't impact computer operation. mcafee still works, no longer the compelling choice

I've used McAfee antivirus in various forms for many years, but have found the last two versions' behavior annoying (this 2011 version, and previous 2010, running on WinXP SP3) to the degree that I no longer run McAfee.Versus McAfee 2009 and earlier, the interface is simplified, with many options gone, such as variable alerting levels. Although the installer still refers to the old SecurityCenter, there is no longer a program/option called that. When I disable on-access scanning, VirusScan displays a prominent warning-window on every login (including resuming from screensaver), that must be clicked away. Very annoying since I normally leave on-access scan turned off for performance reasons during gaming and certain other applications, turning it on when needed. It's noteworthy that Microsoft's Security Essentials antivirus (free for download) doesn't have the annoying warnings.Scheduled-scan can't be disabled, only rescheduled. Again an... 3/5 Omar Siddique (Ellicott City, MD USA) - See all my reviews, November 14, 2010

    Silent and worry free

I've tried lots of different AntiVirus programs such as McAfee, Norton, Trend, and AVG.I like this program because it's cheap and it comes with a firewall program with the antivirus.3-users per disc is also great for those of us with multiple computers.McAfee has improved the interface and those annoying pop up messages can now be disabled. The program is easy to uninstall (unlike Norton) and the firewall seems to work very well. The next step up version (Internet Security) has the parental controls which I don't need and the online backup which is a measly 1gb.Also, when playing games this program does not interfere.Overall, works great and does the job without the annoying pop up messages. 5/5 Sam Archer (USA) - See all my reviews, October 28, 2010

Already using 2010 version? Read on...

Last December I installed the 2010 version of this software and have been happy with it for my parents' computer...on their older Windows XP Professional computer, it's been reliable and unobtrusive, and easy to configure.Unobtrusive, that is, until it started reminding them to renew their annual subscription to the software. The problem is that the renewal price is pretty high...higher, in fact, than just buying the 2011 version. So, I figured I would get them the 2011 version and install it over the 2010 version. After all, the 2011 version advertises its new features, including increased speed. So, I sit down with my coffee, ready to start the installation process. A message comes up saying there is no need to install! Just enter the new 2011 license key, and it will extend the 2010 license for another year. In other words, apparently the 2011 version offers nothing new over the 2010 version if you've been keeping the 2010 version up to date. I'm not... 4/5 N. Does a decent job, but is a bit resource heavy

McAfee Internet Security (MIS 2011)I tried (McAfee Internet Security) MIS2011 after a long time (It has been ~6 years since I used MaAfee for virus protection) on my WinXP laptop (5 yrs old). MIS2011 is a comprehensive security suite. Its performance (virus detection and internet security) is comparable to Norton. MIS does have room for improvement in a number of areas (esp. resource usage), but still is a decent piece of software.1. Installation: Installation can be customized from the menu(e.g. deselect spam control, parental control or firewall). Thankfully, installation does not require a restart of your computer, but it does take a while compared to other security software. On my 5yr old laptop, it took ~10 min compared to NIS which took less than 2 min.2. Performance: MIS also has automatic updates, but installation of signature updates consumes resources even when running in the background. Reliable, from a respected company

When I first got into computers I had a Norton security program. I found it difficult to use and limited in preferences. I downloaded a trial of McAfee Virusscan and was happy with it, easy to install and use so I've stuck with McAfee since.Since that time I have upgraded to the Internet Security version. I use it both at work and at home. The cost depends on how many users and computers you want to install it on. There is a fee for additional computers which you can pay for on McAfee's website. Install is easy. If you have some other company's security program installed it is recommend you uninstall it first. If you have a McAfee product installed the new program will uninstall the old one before installing the new one. It includes virusscan, site advisor, parental controls, backup, firewall. You can pick and choose which options you want installed. Once it is installed it will see if an update is available. Setting preferences is very easy.If you choose to have McAfee... 4/5 D. Lousy Customer Service

This works OK. Less annoying than previous versions. However I am getting pop ups asking me to buy McAfee products. I go to customer support and it won't let me get in at all. One screen tells me to view "my account" to solve the problem, but there is no solution there. I don't know what will happen if I get a real problem. It wants me to run an invasive program called virtual technician, that I don't want installed on my computer. I don't have a home phone, and it doesn't like that either, apparently. It won't take my office phone number. So I guess I have to live with the annoying pop ups...at least as long as I keep the software. Beware of Amazon , it is like a jungle

I am very frustrated with this process. I purchased this product at a extremely "too good to be true price" I checked it three times before purchasing and was misled. The product was presented as being able to be used on three computers. When I received it I opened the box with out examining it. It says clearly " One License " meaning that you can only use it on one computer. I went home and discovered my mistake. Then went onto Amazon and had the same thing misrepresented. Easy to operate and quick to detect viruses

McAfee has offered an impressive suite of utilities and products. For the past four years I have been using Norton 360. Unfortunately, I still had a virus get past their software and ruin my hard drive. Norton wanted $100 to fix the problem. So I switched to McAfee. I live in Korea, and today it caught the Conflicker virus attempting to jump onto my computer the instant I plugged in a thumb drive. Horrendous. I'd ike to give it zero stars.

This is a horrible, horrible product. First, McAffee permitted my computer to get THREE viruses that it failed to catch even after 3 scans. Not only did the viruses (a trojan connected to "Internet Seucuryt 2010' among them) nearly crash my hard drive, but I had to PAY "customer service" to tell me it could not help beause their scan found nothing amiss. It took a Bestt Buy scan to uncover the 3 viruses, and, at $199 to fix, which McAffee refused to pay, I had to buy a new computer. Suffice it to say, I will NOT be installing McAffee on it. 1/5 Bookworm & bibliophile (Long Island, NY) - See all my reviews This review is from: McAfee Total Protection 3 User 2010 [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM) This is a horrible, horrible product. Good product, small improvements needed

I always order from Amazon because of the excellent shipping, prices, and service. As far as McAfee, I had some problems installing because it did not like the fact that I already had a version of McAfee Total Protect installed on my computer. I did have to contact McAfee support, and they were helpful. The problem is that if you are currently running a version of McAfee that is expired or is expiring soon, and you install a new version on top of the old, it gives you "subscription" errors. I had to eventually uninstall completely the old version in order to upgrade to the new. I just wish McAfee would have warned me about this in the first place because they do offer the "upgrade" option with their product. In other words, they need to issue a fix to previous users so that it doesn't conflict with the registratino process. 3/5 Paul Rose - See all my reviews, January 18, 2012

Works okay, but not very Firefox-friendly

It generally does the job, but tends to favor Internet Explorer over Firefox. For example, I cannot get rid of the Site Adviser toolbar in Firefox without disabling the function of Site Adviser. I want the screen real-estate back. Why does every vendor have to shove their tool-bar in our faces without asking? And when newer versions of Firefox come out, it seems to take it a few weeks to be ready for that version. 3/5 tablizer "tablizer" (Western USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Mcafee Total Protection 2012 - 1 User (CD-ROM) It generally does the job, but tends to favor Internet Explorer over Firefox. Charged my dad $300 to remove a virus it let in

I bought my dad a copy of McAfee Total Protection for his birthday and he seemed pretty happy with it. He started having a problem with his computer and McAfee was displaying pop-ups that he wasn't protected. He called McAfee and they told him that he had a trojan on his computer. They said that they'd clean it off for $300. I can't believe he paid them, but they had him so scared that he'd transfer it to someone else or infect any new computer he got that he went ahead with it. I can't believe the audacity of them - first their program lets the virus on his system and then they have the nerve to charge him $300 to remove it. I immediately took McAfee off of my system and let Microsoft install its freeware antivirus program. 1/5 John Messina (Reading, PA USA) - See all my reviews, March 20, 2012

Great protection from Kaspersky as usual.

Installation & First Impression:*****************************Installation of KIS 2012 was quite speedy. At the beginning of the installation process the program looked for any conflicting security programs that were already installed and to my surprise, it actually found remnants of Microsoft Security Essentials that I had previously uninstalled. After this was cleared up, it was a simple case of activating the product online and viola!, I was up and running. Albeit needing a definition update.Once KIS was up and running I downloaded the latest update, which took quite a while, and then gave it a quick scan. As this is the first 2012 malware product I've looked at thus far, it is difficult to be objective as to how Kaspersky's latest will compare with others that are released in the latter part of the year, but my initial impression is quite positive. KIS 2012 is jam-packed full of all the features that you would expect to see in such a program and definitely... 5/5 Method2Madness "Alex" (Hampton Roads, VA) - See all my reviews, September 26, 2011

Super slow full scan takes the sparkle off an otherwise great product

I received Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 from the Amazon Vine Reviewer Program. Because I received the 3-license version I installed it on two PC's: desktop running Vista 32-bit and a desktop running Windows 7 64-bit.I had planned on also installing it on an XP desktop as this software gives you one code to license 3 machines for 1 year, however that is being old and fussy upon this writing and may need to die a natural death, thus I may have to install Kaspersky on yet another Win 7 machine instead. I will update this review after the third install.**Note that this software works with 32 and 64-bit Windows OS's Vista, XP and 7, but doesn't support Mac.**The Positives:Installation on both machines was easy, but much quicker on the Windows 7 machine. Probably more about the OS than this software. On both the Vista and Win 7 PC's the system moved quicker than with other antivirus' used before - Trend Micro on one and Kaspersky Pure on the... 3/5 Andrea L. Buy it here, do NOT renew with McAfee

I bought a 3-license version of this in 2011, when my subscription was almost up (30 days left), the application told me so and directed me to renew on the McAfee website. DO NOT DO THIS!!! Once there, I saw the renewal would be $50, when I asked their customer service, they told me that was actually for only 1 PC, the other two would be additional $30, so $80 to renew a product I bought initially with 1 year subscription for $20 on sale at a local store. While on the phone with them, I pulled up Amazon and found this product. The same thing I bought in 2011, but the 2012 version, 3-license included, 1 year subscription included, for much, much less. I asked McAfee if they price match and the woman on the other end told me in broken english that I should not trust any web site other than theirs to buy from. I told her Amazon is well known, she said the only way it would work is if I bought it from them. Antivirus that does the job but slows down my system

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with Windows Vista SP2 installed. McAffee Antivirus Plus 2012 took 20 minutes to install. Even though I unchecked "send anonymous usage info" during installation, I still find my system slows down a lot with this AntiVirus software loaded.I had to reboot twice after the installation because my system was at 100% CPU. I also was unable to get to my gmail account with the SiteAdvisor (for the web) loaded even though I put the website address in as a trusted site. Instead I decided to disable the add-ons for the browser. After my 2nd reboot, I decided to wait about 6 minutes for my system to fully boot up and McAfee to load in the system tray before I surfed the web or used any program. Once I did that, the residual slowness has been minimal. However, having to wait this long to boot up so that the CPU doesn't go to 100% is annoying.I always found that McAfee antivirus works and this 2012 version is no exception. Gets rid of other people's Pop-Ups, and then installs its own!

The nice thing about McAfee is that it's easy to install and does a good job of protecting your computer from viruses. The not-so-nice thing is that after one year, it starts harassing you with pop-up messages like "Your Security has Expired! Click here to purchase an update!", which is very much like the incessant pop-up messages that I wanted to avoid getting in the first place. Is there some way to make it stop??? 3/5 GLBT (Illinois) - See all my reviews, December 15, 2011

    Caveat Emptor

McAfee is so on top of it that it checks your computer for threats BEFORE it installs itself, even downloading the latest definitions. Then it cleans threats on what is an essentially unthreatened machine. And finishes without a report. If I have ever seen a real program behaving like the malware it fights, here it is. Showmanship, a marketing hook. Or, maybe it really catches stuff, in that case it's a nice feature. And then the inevitable dire warning about having another security app installed, and promising nothing will work right if you leave it installed. True in a few rare cases, but as Spybot S&D once pointed out, they have tested their product against all the majors and there was no compatibility issues. So, another marketing ploy to eliminate the competition. But all in all, at first glance 2012 seems relatively unchanged since the 2011 version. It strikes me as another unnecessary marketing ploy - and a confusing one- to issue a new name every year-... 2/5 palealien "I'm not bad, I 'm just drawn that way" (Butte Creek Canyon, Ca United States) - See all my reviews, November 3, 2011

Installation a little touchy... HELPFUL customer support technology.

Day 1:Popped the CD in the drive, I started the installation procedure. However, the installation failed with a generic "Installation incomplete" error with no code. I went online to download a trial version so I could then just input the code... but I got the same error here.Day 2: I tried both things one more time... I thought to myself "I don't REALLY want to give McAfee an awful review... so lets try their customer support. First they suggest downloading and installing a virtual technician. I did this, but the technician said "Fool, you have no McAfee installation for me to work with!" (Not exactly, I'm being flippant...)After that I had to install a couple pieces of communication software and then I was running with one of their technicians. In a few minutes and with my permission he remoted to my machine. The gentlemen diagnosed the problem incorrectly--he stated I had old McAfee files left on my computer that needed to be... 4/5 avgvstvs "Matt Seil" (Omaha NE) - See all my reviews, November 24, 2011
