Renewal Costs More Than New Software - Otherwise OK
I have been using the Norton security products for many years, and I have been for the most part very satisfied with them. The one gripe I have is that every year when I go to renew my subscription, I find that I can purchase new copies of the software for less than the renewal price. Although it is relatively easy to buy new copies of the software every year and avoid the exorbitant renewal costs, I feel like Symantec is trying to take advantage of me. I think loyal customers should be rewarded with renewal costs that are at or below readily available costs for the new software from reliable sources like Amazon. Instead, Symantec prefers to try to gouge its customers. For this software which is currently selling for $37.99 on Amazon, Symantec charges $59.99 for renewal. Shame on you Symantec! 3/5 Linus Linder - See all my reviews This review is from: Norton Internet Security 2011 - 1 User/3 PC [Old Version] (Software) I have been using the Norton security products for many years, and I have been for the most part very satisfied with them. I have been using Norton Antivirus/Internet security for years now (on 3 PCs running XP) and the big turn around for the past few years with 'light' software has been great. Most times, issues have been due to non-removal of other/earlier versions of Norton software.Installation: The recent improvements in installation are continuing to be great. I was able to upgrade from NIS2010 to 2011 in under 2 minutes. If you still have license period left from your previous installation, choose to upgrade using Norton upgrade option (You'll get pop-up notice or check Support - Check new version/product update). If you upgrade using the disc, it will over-write your existing license period (doesn't make sense, but that is the case here). However, after internet upgrade, you can enter the license code from the disc to extend the license for another year (just before your license period expires). During installation, you may notice wireless connection disconnecting a couple of times,... 4/5 Gene Cloner (St Louis) - See all my reviews This review is from: Norton Internet Security 2011 - 1 User/3 PC [Old Version] (Software) I have been using Norton Antivirus/Internet security for years now (on 3 PCs running XP) and the big turn around for the past few years with 'light' software has been great. Well, after a few month of beta testing I guess it's time to give everybody my opinion. Since 2010 Norton became my favorite security suite for my PC, and this one is no exception. I tested it on 3 different PC running XP Pro, Vista H.P.32bit and Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit. Once you get this software it will let you install on 3 different computers. Haven't tested 64bit version, but I'm pretty sure it should work the same. For those who already has a 2010 edition you won't see mush of the changes, it's more like refined version, which is a very good thing. For the interface it keeps the dark theme, with yellow text, but moves the large graphic security status indicator from the main interface window up to the task-bar and system tray icons. The UI is impressively easy to use. It's still very fast light on resources, with an extremely good protection. Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 - 3 Users
Software (Kaspersky Lab)
List Price: $79.95
Great protection from Kaspersky as usual.
Installation & First Impression:*****************************Installation of KIS 2012 was quite speedy. At the beginning of the installation process the program looked for any conflicting security programs that were already installed and to my surprise, it actually found remnants of Microsoft Security Essentials that I had previously uninstalled. After this was cleared up, it was a simple case of activating the product online and viola!, I was up and running. Albeit needing a definition update.Once KIS was up and running I downloaded the latest update, which took quite a while, and then gave it a quick scan. As this is the first 2012 malware product I've looked at thus far, it is difficult to be objective as to how Kaspersky's latest will compare with others that are released in the latter part of the year, but my initial impression is quite positive. KIS 2012 is jam-packed full of all the features that you would expect to see in such a program and definitely... 5/5 Method2Madness "Alex" (Hampton Roads, VA) - See all my reviews, September 26, 2011Super slow full scan takes the sparkle off an otherwise great product
I received Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 from the Amazon Vine Reviewer Program. Because I received the 3-license version I installed it on two PC's: desktop running Vista 32-bit and a desktop running Windows 7 64-bit.I had planned on also installing it on an XP desktop as this software gives you one code to license 3 machines for 1 year, however that is being old and fussy upon this writing and may need to die a natural death, thus I may have to install Kaspersky on yet another Win 7 machine instead. I will update this review after the third install.**Note that this software works with 32 and 64-bit Windows OS's Vista, XP and 7, but doesn't support Mac.**The Positives:Installation on both machines was easy, but much quicker on the Windows 7 machine. Probably more about the OS than this software. On both the Vista and Win 7 PC's the system moved quicker than with other antivirus' used before - Trend Micro on one and Kaspersky Pure on the... 3/5 Andrea L. Firewalls and Internet Security: Repelling the Wily Hacker (2nd Edition)
Book (Addison-Wesley Professional)
List Price: $59.99
A nice internet security overview
My hope was that reading Firewalls and Internet Security - Second Edition would be a chance to sit at the feet of the masters, but I was disappointed. Part of the problem is the title, this is not a firewall book; this is an internet oriented security overview. The writing style is professional, but terse, you will learn the names of many important things, but you will not learn how to DO anything and you will not even learn ABOUT very much. However the book gives you the NAMES of many important topics that you can go research on your own and is valuable for that. It is well edited and has a flawless layout making it a fast easy read because the technical level is low and the book is short. The book opens with a few pages on security truisms, my favorite part of the book and a dazzling display of intellect! All the material after the truisms and up to chapter 9 is a quick tour of topics like Security Policy, Host-Based Security and Perimeter Security, Authentication, and all... 3/5 Stephen Northcutt (Kauai, HI USA) - See all my reviews, March 22, 2003Yet another worthwhile book for us all in the IT industry!
Addison-Wesley in cooperation with William Cheskwick, Steven Bellovin and Aviel Rubin have produced yet another well-researched publication. This book is all about Internet security, firewalls, VPNs and much more, all of which are hot topics and renowned buzzwords within today's IT industry. In the first chapter, the authors express their view on network security and demonstrate the different methods an Administrator can use in order to secure their network(s). This is carried out by categorizing security into Host-Based and Perimeter security. The second and third chapters are approximately 50 pages covering basic protocols, including IPv6, DNS, FTP, SNMP, NTP, RPC-based protocols and a several more like the famous NAT. The chapters are concluded with a summary on wireless security. The next five chapters (chapter 4 to 8 inclusive), analyze various attacks used against networks and server operating systems in an attempt to exploit them. There is a wealth of information... 5/5 Christos Partsenidis (Thessaloniki, Greece - www.Firewall.cx) - See all my reviews, October 10, 2003Exceptional authors, but not an exceptional book
I wish I could give "Firewalls and Internet Security, 2nd Edition" (FAIS:2E) more stars. I eagerly awaited the next edition of this security classic with the rest of the community. However, like many sequels, it fails to live up to expectations. Nine years ago the first edition was revolutionary. In 2003, despite the addition of skilled practitioner Avi Rubin, the authors make few original contributions to the security scene. The book's strengths include sharing certain keen insights and summarizing key technical data. They repeat the conclusion that frequent password changes tend to decrease security, rather than improve it. They succinctly describe BGP and IPv6. They accurately explain that TCP sequence numbers count bytes of data, not packets -- unlike many other authors. Their case studies, while dating from the early 1990s, are the most enjoyable parts of FAIS:2E. Like Avi Rubin's "White Hat Security Arsenal" (a better book), they cite... 3/5 Richard Bejtlich "TaoSecurity" (Metro Washington, DC) - See all my reviews, March 16, 2003 -

Cisco-Linksys Wireless-N Internet Home Monitoring Camera

Re: the lower ratings... I don't know what the problems were, but...
Here's the scoop: I was rather concerned about reading the wide range of ratings on this camera, seeing that there were some one star reviews coming in, so I was fully ready to return this puppy if it didn't live up to my pretty high standards. That said, here is my experience:I have a Linksys Dual Band Wireless N Router running in a single level ranch about 50 yards from some pretty serious power lines. On the network is a Power Mac connected via ethernet cable, and 3 laptops (a PC, an older Macbook, and a newer Macbook Pro) via wireless. Off topic, I'm not impressed with the range on the Linksys Router, but it provides some pretty quick bandwidth in the home with two networks to connect into, so I live with it.I unboxed the WVC80N, which came with an ethernet cable, a CD, and some instructions/manual. I followed the instructions to the letter, which instructed me to put the CD into a computer first. I put it in the Power Mac. The CD worked... 5/5 Sean Webb - See all my reviews, January 29, 2010Linksys WVC80N is a great camera!

Linksys WVC80N cam review:Positives:Supports 640x480 resolution at up to 30FPS. Don't buy an ip cam that doesn't support 640x480 (i.e. some of the Panasonic ones)The low light level performance is good. This cam claims to have a better CMOS sensor that the previous model but it's still not all that great in low light (if you want good images in low light you need an IP cam with a CCD sensor but this adds cost and complexity). Logitech Alert 700e Outdoor Add-On Security Camera with Night Vision

Great system, just a few flaws
I try to keep up writing reviews for products I buy, especially the items that I myself do a lot of research on, before buying. So I'll break this down as best I can. I live in a 2-story, 2800 square foot home. And for the longest time, I've wanted a surveillance system to make me feel safe both when I am at home and away. The Logitech camera system and software does it right, with only a few minor issues, and I stress minor.I have an Apple router but run Windows 7 on my PC; I'm also using the free application on my iPhone. I had zero problems with the software install, even when it came to Window's firewall. I'm currently running 2 indoor cameras and 1 outdoor camera...but, I actually plan on using nothing but outdoor cameras for my entire system (to include for inside surveillance). And that's about the only real issue I have with the system. The indoor camera works awesome and does what it should. It delivers good quality color video and even over the iPhone... 4/5 W. Nichols (Henderson, NV) - See all my reviews, November 11, 2010Quite a ride Logitech has taken us on...BUT>
I purchased this camera system, six cameras total, two at a time, until I was somewhat basically satisfied with them. Today, I'm at about 80% satisfaction rating but the first few weeks were pretty brutal. It's a bit of a learning curve figuring out how this system works because it uses POE (power over ethernet) connects and if you run your vacuum cleaner or carpet shampoo machine, well, some of the cameras get confused and bug out. Some will come back on after you are done, some may not. And they definitely don't like power outages: during one ice storm here, the power flickered on and off multiple times - the cameras went out, would not come back on and ultimately I had to wait til the event was over and then unplug and replug every unit (some of which were not very convenient to reach in 10 degree weather, I might add). In other power failures, where the power simply goes out and stays out, they have all managed to recover on their own (after the new update which may have... 4/5 Robert E. From the moment I opened the box the Logitech Alert 750e Outdoor Master Security System with Night Vision was very easy to understand and had great setup diagrams with color coded ribbons for stress free setup. Where I was mounting the unit 20 feet off the ground I connected everything in the house and tested it to make sure it was working first. Once the camera was mounted in place I simply adjusted it to the area I wanted to monitor and then used electrical tape around the mount joints as they are not as tight as I would have expected and I did not want to have to climb a ladder after every wind storm to adjust. Setup was very quick after installing the mounting bracket. It should be noted the the ribbon (power) cable that connects to the outdoor camera is so flat and thin that you can bring it in through a window without compromising the window seal when the window is fully closed. This is a huge plus as I did not need to drill a hole for it.I set up email... 5/5 Linksys User (Brockton, MA, United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Logitech Alert 700e Outdoor Add-On Security Camera with Night Vision (Electronics) From the moment I opened the box the Logitech Alert 750e Outdoor Master Security System with Night Vision was very easy to understand and had great setup diagrams with color coded ribbons for stress free setup. Unlike traditional wheel locks with the "star shaped" lock that have a master key, this lock has a different pattern for locking/unlocking the screw. I'm sure there is a master key for this lock as well but it is probably harder to come by. 5/5 2012g37xS - See all my reviews This review is from: Gorilla Automotive 71631N Acorn Wheel Locks (12mm x 1.50" Thread Size) - Pack of 4 (Automotive) Unlike traditional wheel locks with the "star shaped" lock that have a master key, this lock has a different pattern for locking/unlocking the screw. The good thing is the scan is fast, whether I choose the quick scan or the full scan. There is an update feature, but it is not automatic. It needs to be selected manually. The most niggly thing about it is hitting "exit" does not exit the app. I need to hit the "home" icon to get out, but that's not exactly hard to do. It's not a bad antivirus scanner, and I'm happy for the speed._______________________UPDATE: I just want to make a correction to my review. I wrote the above review after running it for about a day. After using it a few days, it has become apparent that this little app does run in the background. After every app download, the antivirus app tells me there are no viruses. This is a great anti virus product. It scans any downloads and does a complete scan daily. Have Lookout on my Android phone and this app is just as good for my Kindle. 5/5 Rae J.
