A Major Overhaul of Office for Mac, but Still a Poor Stepbrother to the Windows Version

Before I start with the review, I would like to say a few things about myself and my experience with Microsoft Office products. I have been using various components of Microsoft Office for almost a couple of decades, on both Windows and Macintosh computers. Right now, I have a copy of on my , as well as on my Windows 7 (formerly Vista) laptop. I also occasionally use iWorks on my iPad, Google docs, and have had some experience with OpenOffice. I use word processing software on a daily basis, PowerPoint more or less... 4/5 Dr. Bojan Tunguz (Indiana, USA) - See all my reviews, October 26, 2010

    Greatly improved, still handcuffed

When I reviewed the prior version of Office, I recommended that users stick with Office 2004. Finally, I can strongly recommend upgrading to Office 2011. I would wager that this will be the major version for the next five to six years, in the same way that 2004 has been widely adopted and stable for the last six years.I should state at the outset that I am primarily a user of Word for the production of long, annotated documents. I also use Excel and Powerpoint, but would not consider myself a power-user of these applications. I have been using Microsoft Word since 1986. This review is mainly for people who have been Word/Office users and are wondering whether to upgrade. All three versions of the Office for Mac 2011 suite contain Word, Excel and Powerpoint. The Home & Student version does not contain Outlook; the Home & Business and Academic versions DO contain Outlook. Outlook replaces Entourage. If you do intend to use Outlook, keep in mind that this... 4/5 R. Ferguson (Earth) - See all my reviews, October 25, 2010

Outlook is the cost driver here and Outlook is bad

The only reason to buy this version of Office 2011 (Home and Business) is to get Outlook. The home and student version offers more licenses for less money and you get everything but Outlook. It was the same with Entourage in the 2008 versions. But this time Microsoft promised a real Outlook! No more virtual machines and Outlook 2007 - Oh yeah.Unfortunately what we got was a repackaged Entourage. You can see all of the same underpinnings but in a fancy new skin. Much of the PC outlook functionality just isn't there and there is none of the MAPI interface - its all OWA so no better than WebMail functionality for the most part. On the plus side, the new skin is very nice, and its a bit faster and not quite as flakey as the Entourage 2008 (but have still had several incidents in as many days). But its no Outlook 2007 by a long stretch. And while you normally get some phone support for Office 2011, the second you hook Outlook up to an Exchange server (and why... 2/5 J. Family Tree Maker is Better

Look for Family Tree Maker on-line. I found it surplus for $3. I tried both programs and Family Tree Maker is much better. I have over 10K people in my genealogy database. 3/5 Flippers - See all my reviews This review is from: Legacy Family Tree (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM) Look for Family Tree Maker on-line. Right out of 1990

That's not good for software. I have spent the last hour looking at this. The quality is that of pre-internet days. It's unintuitive, difficult to navigate, and cumbersome. Avoid. 1/5 J. Levine "jamstore" (Del Mar, CA United States) - See all my reviews, September 27, 2005

    Great Rabbits!!!!

This was a great started program for my 4 year old. I am a new homeschooler and wasn't sure where to start. My son absolutely loved this program and actually asked to do school everyday! It is easy to understand and even my 2 year old likes to watch his older brother play the games. It has really been a great teaching resource. We have purchased the next three discs and all of them are great! 5/5 R. Matheney (Glenpool, Ok USA) - See all my reviews, January 19, 2007

    Very repetitive

My 4 1/2 year old played this game one time and found it pretty boring. I like the fact that is assesses their ability but the games are so repetitive. It doesn't have enough choices for them. I can't get him to play it again. We also have the Jumpstart game for Kindergarten and he is crazy about that one. I was hoping that the Reader Rabbit game would interest him as much based on what other reviewers said. He may have liked it better if we hadn't been playing the Jumpstart game already. 2/5 Valerie J. Bogdanos "Val B" (San Leandro, CA) - See all my reviews, June 16, 2010

Need mouse skills to use this product

I bought this as part of a package and thought this one would be the easiest for my son to use, however since he was only 2 he lacked the mouse skills needed for the games. Now that he is three he likes this game but prefer the other DK products: I Want to Read and My First Math Adventure. 3/5 C. Pinnow (Davis, CA USA) - See all my reviews, March 15, 2005

    Woth the Money!

My then, 2-year-old Autistic son, loved this CD Rom. Some really basic games and some really intermediate games. There's a variety of things for them to do and definitely something that can be used with three kids at the same time. We really work on turn-taking when freinds are over.No touch screen necessary but, could be a really cool perk!Very colorful and easy to use! 5/5 A. Child educational software

Having problems with the software freezing up and then I have to restart my computer. I know it's not my computer (2007 laptop) because I bought 3 other educational software programs and they all ran with no problems. This was bought for a 2 yr old so it was very frustrating for her when it would freeze up. Does not appear to be challenging enogh. 5/5 TW (Braselton, Ga) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
